Exhibition methods
What is exhibition?
• A public display of works of art or items of
interest e.g. A film displayed in a multi-
conglomerate cinema, or a poster posted onto
a billboard in the middle of the city.
• POST VIDEO HERE OF YOUTUBE EXHIBITION
UK Film Council
• Digital exhibition is important to the UK Film
Industry because it means that non-
mainstream films are becoming more
accessible. Independent cinemas have the
capability to screen more film trailers because
digital distribution and exhibition is cheaper
than traditional methods. This is why ‘This Is
England’ was digitally distributed.
Exhibitors have to deal with…
• Shifting market conditions
• Strong competition
• Efforts to achieve monopolisation of the field
• Government regulatory actions
• Costly investments in new technology
Exhibition of film posters
• Exhibitors have to consider the target
audience of the film and place posters in areas
and in products that the target audience are
most likely to come across and see them e.g. A
film with a teenage audience are more likely
to see a poster at a bus stop rather than a
billboard beside the road because they cannot
drive, and therefore mainly use public
transport such as the bus to get to places.
Exhibition of magazine covers
• Again, decisions of what magazine is
appropriate for your magazine cover or
whatever you are selling to go on depends on
the appropriate target audience, just like with
the film poster. For example, if you’re
magazine cover was to feature an upcoming
band then they are most likely to end up on
the front of NME.
Where will I exhibit my main and
ancillary products?
• For my teaser trailer it is more likely to be exhibited in a
mainstream cinema, rather than independent one like an Art
cinema, this is because my teaser trailer features the type of film
where the audience do not have to be very active when watching
the film and are likely to go and have a meal as well as go to the
cinema so it would also be a multi-conglomerate cinema.
• My film posters have a wide option of where to be exhibited, I am
likely to exhibit them on bus stops, billboards, inside magazines,
sold in stores such as HMV because of my target audience being
very large as it is 12 and over, there are many different ways that
my target audience are likely to come across the film poster.
• And as for my magazine cover, it is more likely to be featured on the
front of a magazine like Entertainment rather than a reality
magazine or a newspaper because although my target audience is
12 and over, the majority of the profits and views will come from an
audience between 12 and 25.
