QUESTION 3: WHAT KIND OF
MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT
DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT AND WHY?
INSTITUTIONS ROLE IN DISTRIBUTION
• A distributor is an individual or organisation who will represent your film at
festivals and markets around the world and who will attempt to sell it to
television, airlines and other companies that show short films.
• However as we our a new film company with unknown cast and directors
only independent British film companies would consider fabricating the film.
Companies such as; vertigo and dazzle, would be suitable as they aren’t
trying to achieve a huge gross revenue but growth in films and diverse range
of films.
• Vertigo Films is a UK Film and Distribution company founded in 2002.The
company’s mission is to create and distribute commercially driven
independent cinema. The Films span a range of genres and audience taste.
• Vertigo have distributed box office hits such as :Spring Breakers, Street
Dance 3D and Street Dance 2. This shows that their distribution is affective
and successful even without huge budgets and a superstar cast.
• Have similar genre thriller films such as The Children. With the common theme
of the children turning against their parents, therefore similar audiences will
be already watching films distributed by the company so are more likely to
watch our film.
• In my process I researched Dazzle who distribute short films on sites such as
BBC. They are an independent short film label for British films.
• They have distributed short films such as; modern life is rubbish and
domestics.
• These films are all low budget with no known names, they just want to
promote new talent.
• They have a very confined range of genre with the majority being dramas,
and the products aren’t publicized as highly, so are not known as much.
WHY IS VERTIGO BEST FOR MY
THRILLER?
• Vertigo would be the preferred choice of distributer due to the
fact that they have distributed films of success that had minimal
budgets so wouldn’t have been as highly accredited otherwise.
• Also because of its wide genre range it will be ideal to get my
thriller established to a larger audience.
• There are also similar thrillers so the thriller audience will already
be aware of the distributer.
• Also as vertigo have their own website where they publish their
films it will help to get the film know to the audience with the
synopsis exciting more people to watch it.
SOCIAL MEDIA IN DISTRIBUTION
• In recent years social media has been a
huge distributer and advertiser of films of all
genres as people try and find a free, easy
way of watching films.
• Many distributors are now using social
media to advertise upcoming films, these
sites they show through are : Facebook,
Youtube and twitter.
• There are only film sites set up to give
information about each film such as: Rotten
tomatoes and IMDb.
• From my questionnaire I learnt my target
audience mostly use social media so would
have to incorporate this into the distribution
to help attract them.
ILLEGAL DOWNLOADS
• However with the advance of social media comes the issue og illegal
downloading.
• In 2011 BBC released these figures” That research, from internet consultancy
firm Envisional, indicates that the top five box office movies were illegally
downloaded in the UK a total of 1.4 million times last year. Film industry
bosses say it is costing £170m every year and putting thousands of jobs at
risk.”
• This is a real issue as its places the risk of many industries shutting down like
cinemas, producers and actors as the money is no longer entering the
industry.
• Therefore how you publish you film on the internet has to be monitored to
prevent everyone just watching it for free.
