1. An executioner lines up 10 prisoners single file and puts a black or a
white hat on each prisoner's head. Every prisoner can see the hats of
the people in front of her/him in the line - but not her/his own hat, nor
those of anyone behind her/him. The executioner starts at the end
(back) and asks the last prisoner the colour of her/his hat. She/he must
answer “black" or “white." If she/he answers correctly, she/he is
allowed to live. If she/he gives the wrong answer, she/he is killed
instantly and silently. (While everyone hears the answer, no one knows
whether an answer was right.) On the night before the line-up, the
prisoners confer on strategy to help them. They have to get 9 out of 10
right otherwise they will all be executed. What should they do?
Thank you for coming.
