Today’s nonprofit leaders cannot
afford to expend resources based on
good intentions and wishful thinking.
The social sector needs to focus on
meaningful and measurable change.
Why CVNL Invests in Nonprofit Leadership
Development
Nonprofit leaders and executives are critical to both maximize and
sustain an organization's impact…
as long as they possess the
skills and core competencies
that are necessary to inspire
and support the people in
their organization around this
purpose.
We at CVNL have identified five pillars of leadership excellence:
Pillar 1: Strong, responsive leadership
Pillar 2: People-oriented management
Pillar 3: Strategic thinking and problem-solving
Pillar 4: Well-designed and well-implemented programs
Pillar 5: Financial health and stability
The 5 Pillars of Leadership Excellence
Building on what we have learned
Building off of 12 years' experience, with over 400 Bay
Area leaders graduating, we're re-introducing the
Emerging Leaders Program as the:
Excellence in Leadership Program
(ELP)
The new ELP curriculum has been improved through the following:
a)Based on constructivist learning: less lecture-based, more
hands-on, more peer coaching;
b)More emphasis on influencing skills for leaders and skills that
are inherent to the role of a nonprofit leader;
c)Expanded module on strategy and strategic planning weaved
with problem solving skills;
d)“Organizational Strategy Toolkit,” a series of tools and templates
to reflect and apply the program’s core concepts;
e)Follow up sessions for long-term learning and continued guidance

Strategy and Strategic Planning (Introducing the Organizational
Strategy Toolkit)

One day group coaching and facilitated session in which we share
progress on the Toolkit
Executing your strategy and measuring impact through Program
Development and Evaluation. Budgeting basics and financial resources.
DAY 6 Develop personal and organizational brand: How to get your message
across and build a strong case for funders (communication + fundraising).
Curriculum
Continued Guidance and Support
The program includes 12
hours of follow-up and
coaching per cohort over
four months after each
program.
Outcomes
• Recognized personal leadership style and areas for growth;
• Rich understanding on how to integrate organizational mission
and strategy;
• Increased confidence in your ability to lead and scale;
• A new perspective on your organization’s potential and impact;
• Development of a plan of action for addressing key
organizational and strategic challenges; and
• A new network of relationships with a diverse group of
nonprofit leaders.
The Result
Leaders who are better equipped to lead organizations more effectively, with expert-derived strategies
and tools for long-term success.

  • 2. Why CVNL Invests in Nonprofit Leadership Development In modern nonprofits, organizational mission and performance are inextricably linked. Today’s nonprofit leaders cannot afford to expend resources based on good intentions and wishful thinking. The social sector needs to focus on meaningful and measurable change.
  • 3. Why CVNL Invests in Nonprofit Leadership Development Nonprofit leaders and executives are critical to both maximize and sustain an organization's impact… as long as they possess the skills and core competencies that are necessary to inspire and support the people in their organization around this purpose.
  • 4. We at CVNL have identified five pillars of leadership excellence: Pillar 1: Strong, responsive leadership Pillar 2: People-oriented management Pillar 3: Strategic thinking and problem-solving Pillar 4: Well-designed and well-implemented programs Pillar 5: Financial health and stability The 5 Pillars of Leadership Excellence
  • 5. Building on what we have learned Building off of 12 years' experience, with over 400 Bay Area leaders graduating, we're re-introducing the Emerging Leaders Program as the: Excellence in Leadership Program (ELP)
  • 6. The new ELP curriculum has been improved through the following: a)Based on constructivist learning: less lecture-based, more hands-on, more peer coaching; b)More emphasis on influencing skills for leaders and skills that are inherent to the role of a nonprofit leader; c)Expanded module on strategy and strategic planning weaved with problem solving skills; d)“Organizational Strategy Toolkit,” a series of tools and templates to reflect and apply the program’s core concepts; e)Follow up sessions for long-term learning and continued guidance Building on what we have learned

  • 8. Nonprofit Sector + Leadership Challenges and Trends + What is a good leader? Influencing leadership and problem solving skills Working with people inside your organization: Board Governance + Staff (HR & Inclusion Inventory) Strategy and Strategic Planning (Introducing the Organizational Strategy Toolkit) DAY 1 DAY 2 DAY 3 DAY 4 DAY 5 One day group coaching and facilitated session in which we share progress on the Toolkit Executing your strategy and measuring impact through Program Development and Evaluation. Budgeting basics and financial resources. DAY 6 Develop personal and organizational brand: How to get your message across and build a strong case for funders (communication + fundraising). Curriculum
  • 9. Continued Guidance and Support The program includes 12 hours of follow-up and coaching per cohort over four months after each program.

Outcomes • Recognized personal leadership style and areas for growth; • Rich understanding on how to integrate organizational mission and strategy; • Increased confidence in your ability to lead and scale; • A new perspective on your organization’s potential and impact; • Development of a plan of action for addressing key organizational and strategic challenges; and • A new network of relationships with a diverse group of nonprofit leaders.

Editor's Notes

  1. While we will be re-designing ELP to be a stronger program, our research has also been focused on re-designing/re-packaging our training department as a whole. This is our driving theme: Everything we do, from workshops, to L&Ls, to ELP is aimed at strengthening CVNL’s role as a GOTO place to learn about nonprofit sustainable and strategic leadership.
  2. In the concentrated space of a month, we gather 18 leaders for 6 days with 10 faculty and coaches for 48 total hours teaching.
  3. The sessions are organized and weaved together in a logical sequence of events and through a logical path to sustainable leadership success: we start with setting the scene by providing the first tools for leadership and problem solving skills - set common vocabulary thwn we go throufh jow we use these skills to dea e people in our org: hr and equity inclusion and board gov then strategy and systems and peograms we are deceloping a strategy toolkit they have a template that needs to be filled out by the end of theprogr its beingontroduced at yhe end f the strategy session they come together to discuss strategy robleblens when they come back together we review project and we dice intonoperationl details: how u make it happen: programs and numbers then we takebthis oitside of the organoAtion and we talk about how to develo a personal brand and organiz brand and how to use strng strategy and programs + numbers to get the message across and to buold a strong case for funders!!!
