In 2015, LWB began the implementation of the Leading Practice strategy, aiming to build a learning culture among a 4,200-strong workforce that improves leadership and practice quality at the frontline.
Life Without Barriers is implementing a leading practice framework to build leadership skills and strengthen relationship-based practice through workshops and coaching for frontline leaders. The program involves experiential learning opportunities like workshops co-facilitated by internal leaders using activities and scenarios. Frontline leaders also receive up to six coaching sessions to set and work towards learning goals using a reflective cycle. Initial evaluations found the workshop approach was different than many participants' training experiences but provided benefits like feeling more able to support clients and staff. The program is being rolled out nationally with lessons learned around planning, implementation and evaluating outcomes over time.

Mentoring involves a relationship between an experienced person and an inexperienced person, where the experienced person provides guidance and support to help the inexperienced person achieve their goals and develop skills. Effective mentoring requires good matching between mentor and mentee, structure, and commitment from both parties. Mentoring programs can benefit organizations, mentees, and mentors by facilitating learning and career development, sharing knowledge, and improving employee retention.

Using assessment data to make decisions regarding curriculum and instruction cannot be isolated to an administrative office. In order for data to have a meaningful and lasting impact on the academic program, it is important to solicit diverse stakeholder perspectives and provide opportunities for faculty engagement at every stage of the assessment process development. Developing collaborations in order to achieve incremental goals helps to establish a pattern of success and creates a vision of future accomplishments and an institutional culture of assessment. Each institution has unique needs. This workshop is designed to provide small group interaction to help attendees target optimal strategies doe their institutions.
At the end of the session, participants will be able to:
1) Identify why stakeholder buy-in is important
2) Formulate effective strategies for engagement of faculty and administration
3) Identify principles of Improvement Science to support a process of curriculum review
4) Review longitudinal assessment data to identify curricular gaps
5) Utilize assessment data to develop improvement plans
6) Develop specific strategies tailored to the needs of the participants’ institutions

Nurse educators are all life-long learners. Whether you are in a formal leadership position or not, you are a leader. I strongly believe that we should strive to develop our leadership skills in a very purposeful way. Kouzes and Posner developed the Leadership Challenge after years of research and found there to be five practices of exemplary leadership which can be used as a framework for our leadership development. Let’s look at each of the five practices of exemplary leadership.
I encourage you to have your entire simulation team take the leadership challenge along side you over the next few months.
Model the way is the first practice.
Credibility is the foundation of leadership and to build credibility as a leader you must do what you say you will do. You must first know yourself very well—your values, standards, ethics, beliefs as well as the values, standards, ethics and beliefs of those around you. Then find your voice to bring about a shared unity.
The Golden Rule of Leadership: Ask others to do only what you are willing to do yourself (p. 78)
Follow best practices in simulation-based and interprofessional education
Inspire a shared vision is the 2nd practice of exemplary leadership.
Leaders look forward to the future. They have hope, optimism and energy when looking forward. Have you known someone like this? Their passion is infectious as they go around and convince others to work toward this common goal.
Does your institution have the infrastructure for a successful simulation program? If not, it might be a good time to “challenge the process” armed with evidence such as the INACSL Standards of Best Practice: Simulation and the NCSBN.
Search for opportunities where improvement is needed then challenge current practices always in a respectful and professional manner.
Create and ensure a safe learning environment
Share success stories of your simulation team throughout the organization by a newsletter, posting a copy of a new publication on a bulletin board,
With your entire Dream Team working to enhance their individual leadership skills this will impact the overall function of the team but there are other strategies to maximize the effectiveness of your Dream Team.
