Examples Of Opening Speech
Opening speech (Formal opening) Good afternoon ladies and gentleman, thanks everyone for being
here today at this important conference. We are honored to be the first speakers here. Before I begin,
I would like to complement this institution on its efforts to create a sustainable environment. (Hook)
Let me tell you a story, in 1878, Paris hosted the first International Exposition of Electricity, as part
of the World Fair hosted at that city the same year. The city was lively with excitement, as great
inventors and innovators from around the world came to exhibit their ideas–Ideas that would drive a
new era of human development. (Hook continued, used later as reference) New technology such as
the telephone, and photography was displayed. However, the star of the show was undoubtedly
Thomas Edison. Who in Paris displayed his electric light bulb. Electric lighting bulbs had been
installed all along the Avenue de l'Opera and the Place de l'Opera. When the electric switched was
flipped, light flooded the streets of Paris and France stepped into the age of electric energy. People
were happy to embrace electrification and wanted electrification, but electricity was extremely
expensive. At the beginning only the very rich could afford access. It wasn't until 1937, ... Show

If these three issues are not solved, we humans as a race can to advance, and the only solution to
these three problems is the development of sustainable energy. It may seem there is a lot to do, and a

famous person, unless that speech is by a famous person)–but... before I take my leave, I would like
to quote Thomas Edison who I dearly respect, he said "If we did all the things we are really capable
of doing, we would literally astound

Media Text Analysis
Identify some elements of the media text that are operating as signifiers and what their signifieds
are.
Firstly, the Fresh Meat opening titles begins with a notice which states that "All University housing
is strictly Non– Smoking." The prefix 'non' is crossed out and replaced with the "weed". This
linguistic sign of the word 'weed' can be signified as a slang term for marijuana, an illegal drug.
Next, the iconic signs of a bicycle helmet, bullet holes and wine shown. Following on from this is a
television set with an abstract green visual. This visual could be signified as similar to a computer
screensaver. A metallic toy robot is indicated which creates sparks.
Furthermore, the iconic signs of a pin board with photos of people attached to it are presented. The
linguistic sign of an actor's name then disappears through a hole in the wall.
There is a signifier of blue shapes strung ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This may connote a character who is a computer nerd. This characterisation may also be
demonstrated with the toy robot.
Following on from McHigh's character is Kimberley Nixon's. Above Nixon's name is a photo frame
with an array of images depicting the character's friendships. This could represent a very social
personality. The actor's name disappearing through the hole in the wall may suggest an imperfect
character with flaws. A hole in the wall may also enable communication between two rooms that are
separated by the wall.
The blue lights above Charlotte Ritchie's name may symbolise a mysterious character as this shade
of blue is sometimes seen this way. The mirror may indicate a character who is self–conscious. It
could be perceived by the audience that Josh Thomas' character enjoys listening or playing music.
The toiletries may also suggest that the character values looking after his appearance. The model
which may be associated with Jack Whitehall's character suggests a promiscuous character or 'play

Evaluation of the Opening Scenes of an Episode of the X–Files
The opening sequence of the 'X–Files' episode 'Tooms' uses a variety of techniques to capture the
attention of the audience.
The 'X–Files' is a very popular television series written by Chris Carter. The series can be described
as a 'hybrid' genre because it reflects a number of different genres. The obvious genre is Science
Fiction because one of the main themes of the series is the paranormal. However there are strong
elements of the Mystery/Detective genre as the two main characters, which are FBI investigators,
seek to find the truth of the paranormal. There is also a Horror/Gothic element to the series because
many investigations ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The affect of this is that the man seems vulnerable, and raises the audience's suspicion of what is
going to happen to him.
There is then a tracking shot of the man inter–cut with a close up of a roadside drain, where the
creature 'Tooms' is lurking. When focused on the drain, the camera slowly zooms in. when the
camera cuts back to the man; it is a low angle tracking shot. This low angle shot gives the
impression to the audience that they are looking through the eyes of whatever is in the drain. This
gives the scene a sinister and foreboding atmosphere.
This is emphasised when the camera zooms in of the businessman in a low angle shot and gradually
becomes slow motion. The entire colour is then drained out of the frame except for the man. This
emphasises the earlier point, and suggests the creature in the drain is focusing all his attention and
malice on the man. At this point there is a section of music that sounds computer generated, almost
alien. This adds to the malice of the creature and is repeated throughout the opening scene when
there is evidence that the creature in the drain is near.
This shot is then followed by a close up of the drain, showing two strange pale eyes. This maintains
the audiences attention because it makes them want to discover what is in the drain and why it is
there.
The camera then cuts to a shot of a

Comparison Between The Others and The Sixth Sense Essay
Comparison Between The Others and The Sixth Sense
The blockbuster movies 'The Sixth Sense' and 'The Others' are two of the best examples of
supernatural thrillers you will ever see. Both storylines are gripping and compelling and there are
many unsuspected twists and turns along the way.
'The Sixth Sense' and 'The Others' have comparable storylines because they are both based on the
idea of a parallel universe in which supernatural and human beings are closer than anyone realises.
Both movies have an ability to keep you guessing throughout and unexpectedly surprising you.
'The Sixth Sense' is about a distinguished child psychologist, Dr Malcolm Crowe who is haunted by
the painful memory of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If they do not catch your attention and generate anticipation, it is likely that you will not enjoy the
movie.
From the opening credits, with their white–on–black minimalism and the stealthy, suggestive music,
it's clear that 'The Sixth Sense' is going to have you on the edge of your seat the whole way through.
The black of the background symbolises darkness and the feeling of unawareness and the
contrasting glowing white writing stands out against it. As the scrolling credits fade into the
background followed by shadows; it sets an eerie atmosphere, which prepares you for the rest of the
movie. The haunting music gets more intense as the credits roll on, which builds tension towards the
opening scene, as it starts with complementary near silence to add impact.
The opening credits in 'The Others' also create a similar ghostly setting as in 'The Sixth Sense'
although I feel that the credits in 'The Others' are more chilling and quite shocking. They start
relatively harmless, however we are still tense and edgy because we know there is irony behind this
and that the story will not turn out to be so innocent. This is proved as the credits roll on and the
images become more disturbing and terrifying. The gentle voice over is also ironic because it leaves
the audience wondering why such a kind voice, talking

Opening Scene of the Film Gladiator Essay example
Opening Scene of the Film Gladiator The opening scene in any film is important as it introduces the
hero and other main characters. The idea is to catch the imagination of the audience and draw them
into the film so they wish to watch all of it. There are lots of factors the director has to take into
account when making the opening the scene these range from camera shots all the way through to
sound.
The opening scene of "Gladiator" is remarkable as it lasts twelve minutes most opening scenes only

as if they are in the battle. On first appearance he has large amount of armour on and skin around his
neck this is a metaphor he has a huge weight on his shoulders. This eight could be the upcoming
battle as he has the lives of his men on his back. There is little noise at this point but you see him
stand and about to walk away when a robin catches his eye. The background in which the robin is
set is one of dismal, desolate and distraught landscape but something so beautiful can come back
here maybe there is hope. The music then speeds up and more drums and bass instruments are
introduced and the camera pans out to reveal a vast army of roman's preparing for battle. A lot more
digetic noise is introduced. Then the camera comes back to our hero and tracks him as he walks
through the troops and they all respect and like him. The surroundings are mainly of burnt and
muddy ground and a blue filter has been used to give it the image of morning. The troops
themselves look like they have thought many wars by having bandages round their head and such.

Essay on Narrative Report on 'Vertigo'
Assignment 1: Narrative report on Vertigo
Establishing the difference between the story and the plot allows one to determine the effect each
element has on the understanding and interpretation of the piece. It also provides a way of tracking
the continuation of events and the relationship between seemingly isolated moments in time. Film
Art clearly defines both story and plot but acknowledges that there is a significant overlap between
the two functions and allows a flow within the film. The plot is the presentation of the events, in
chronological order and includes the events that are seen, inferred and assumed by the viewer as
opposed to the story. The story refers to the way in which the plot is presented, the 'personality'

The opening scene introduces us to the person we later learn is John 'Scottie' Ferguson, something
that does not play out until much later in the film relates to the demonstration of the debilitating
extent of Johns inability to act in the face of heights, once with the police officer and then with his
love whom he cant stop because of his fear. The opening scene builds on the credits by creating the
expectation of suspense and thrill and mystery shrouding the true identity and relation of characters
and setting up the disposableness of characters in the film, this adds to the complexity of Madeline's
disease as the audience cant tell whether, or more when, she will die.
The rooftop chase creates an expectation of dark drama, which moves into the scene with Midge in a
light filled room where Scottie appears to be in control of his fear and the relationship between the
two characters is established, whilst not technically part of the opening scene it instantly makes the
viewer question whether their interpretation of the initial segment of the film was correct, already
one is questioning their ability to pick the direction of the film.
In a sense, the closing scene is the exact opposite of the opening scene, scotty and Judy/Madeline
are scaling the very stairs that rendered him

"The Pandorica Opens" is an episode where the Doctor finds out about a painting of his spaceship
that blows up. The painting contains coordinates of a time and place. The coordinates lead to the
Stonehenge in 2 A.D. The romans play a part as the Doctor's protectors against the aliens who want
the Pandorica for themselves. The Pandorica sounds similar to Pandora's Box, which the character
Amy Pond references. She turns out to be correct as the Pandorica is Pandora's Box, but in modern
time. It was a myth made real. One of the multiple messages in this episode is that united you can
accomplish anything. This was portrayed as all the alien visitors that claimed to have come for the

Character Analysis Of Amc's Breaking Bad
First aired in January 2008, AMC's Breaking Bad, was when audiences were initially introduced to
protagonist, Walter White, in the driver's seat of an old RV wearing nothing but a gasmask and his
(AMC regulated) underwear. The middle aged Walter White is a passionate chemist and somewhat
unsuccessful high school chemistry teacher. The poorly remunerated and disrespected educator is
diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer and pairs with a former student, Jesse Pinkman, in a life of
crime to produce a highly superior form of crystal methamphetamine, with the attempts of providing
for the financial wellbeing of his wife, Skylar and son, Walter White Jr., who was born with cerebral
palsy.

The narrative complexity in Breaking Bad owes also to the show's enigmatic and transformative
characters. Walt is depicted as an upstanding family man, working two jobs to provide for his family
and enriching young minds as a teacher. However, in the first three episodes Walt's character
changes are dramatic.
The first episode of the show features a scene in which Walt discusses the concepts of chemistry and
specifically the notion of chemistry phases of change to his high school students. This analogy of
chemical change can appropriately be adapted to understand Walt's psychological changes.
The audience is presented with a man who is depicted as a victim of modern day society. Analogous
to many other individuals, Walt is the breadwinner in the White family with financial struggles such
that his teacher's compensation is not enough to cover his expenses. Furthermore, he is a man
having just been diagnosed with terminal cancer and in his turmoil experiences a moment of
weakness and decides to produce drugs, as he is desperate to provide for his family after his death.
This fraught man's motivation turns violent and gruesome just an episode later through a series of
two murders by the

Creon's Opening Speech In 'Oedipus The King'
The people of Thebes are very sick, their animals are sick, and unborn babies die.
The message about the plague that Creon brings is that they must find the person who killed King
Laius and they must kill or exile that person. Creon went to the Oracle of Delphi to get this message.
The people think that Oedipus is a strong and clever leader who can save their city from the terrible
plague.
Oedipus's opening speech is ironic because he is really cursing himself, the real murderer of King
Laius.
Oedipus and Teiresias quarrel because Teiresias is tells Oedipus that he(Oedipus) is the murderer of
King Laius.
Oedipus doesn't recognize the truth because he is too ignorant and is determined to find the
murderer.

Oedipus and Jocasta send for the only survivor of the caravan.
Jocasta says that Oracles are wrong and untrue. The chorus do not listen to Jocasta's words.
The messenger is the shepherd from Corinth and he comes to tell Oedipus that King Polybus is dead

Mary, The Reign : Character Development Of Reign
REIGN Reign is an American historical–romance television series following the early escapades of
Mary, Queen of Scots. The show goes on about Mary being with Francis, future King of France.
Unfortunately, it's not your typical fairytale, you know the one that has a happy ending? Sadly,
Francis doesn't live. His mother, Queen Catherine, has a mysterious friend named Nostradamus who
can predict the future before it happens. He predicted that Francis would die a slow painful death,
but faith had a change of heart. There are a few things that I look at when I'm watching a new

Francis and Mary finally got to see each other after some many years has passed. They had been
engaged since the age of six, and this engagement was arranged by their parents. As the show goes
on the tone went from optimistic to negative. Nostradamus's visions were to the point where he
predicted everything that would and should happen. Queen Catherine got very frustrated with his
visions and told him to leave French Court immediately. Ultimately, the tone of the show is what
brings the story, plot, and purpose altogether; it is also a very important factor when you're watching
a new tv series.
The overall ratings of the show are what makes the audience want to watch it. If the show has a bad
rating nine times out of ten, the viewers aren't going to watch it. Reign has a rating of a 7.6 on a site
called IMDB, and that stands for Internet Movie Data Base. On this site, there were 35,075 people
that voted. It has a rating of an 8.4 on a site called TV.com and only 470 people voted. It also has a
rating of a 7.8 on a site called Metacritic and only 77 people voted. Some of the voted were bad and
some good. There were only 22 votes that were based on critics. These are fair ratings, so the
audience would take the time to watch it and maybe watch it again. The overall rating is the most
important factor when choosing a television series to watch. Bad ratings equal fewer viewers. In
summary, the rating of the television show is the main reason why

The Opening Speech of Richard III in William Shakespeare's Play
Richard III is a historical play and we are drawn to this factor from Richard's speech at the opening
of the play. Shakespeare uses Richard's character as his main device for setting the scene. As it is a
play the audience would see Richard entering on a bare stage and this alone would leave an effect of
them which would soon be reinforced by the speech he is about to give. The speech itself is
delivered in a soliloquy, a device that is well associated with Shakespeare. It reveals the inner most
thoughts of the character, exposing their true nature and their state of mind.
The first words of his opening speech,

The speech in itself is a very effective way it is used to arouse the audience in such a way that they
are left with mixed questions and feelings. Such as who Richard is and what has caused his
descriptive outpour. In the course of the speech, Richard says,
"I am determined to prove a villain"
Quickly the audience is made to believe that evil, is the source of Richard's pleasure and that
At no point in the duration of his speech does Richard hesitate to think or question himself. Which
may show him to be a spontaneous person. As he continues Richard shares his plans quite intimately
and very generously with the audience. He tells us that he has caused trouble between his brothers,
George, Duke of Clarence and King Edward. We are made of Richard's true treacherous nature
when he says,
"Dive, thoughts, down to my soul: here Clarence comes.."

Descriptive Essay On An Abandoned House
A group of friends walked up to an old, seemingly abandoned house. They couldn't see inside
because of the dirt and cobwebs on the windows. When they turned the doorknob to see if it was
locked, the door creaked open as if it has been closed for years. Me and my friends , Hayden ,Annie
,Kacy , and Rush were walking up old stairs to this abandoned house . As we walk in the house the
door shut Annie screamed and I told her to ,''shut up ,'' we all didn't think about the door closing on
its on except Annie . So we keep walking around to see if there is light willed Annie keeps yapping
about the door. As we were walking around to see if there was light , we did not proceed that we
were in a abound house so the light will not work because no one lives here so no one could pay the
bills . So we looked in Rush's bag to get the flashlights . As we walk around Kacy started to joke
around like what if we die , or what if theres ghost ,or what if we get trap here , so that made Annie
really scared . kacy loves to try to scarier use but it doesn't work expect Annie . So we went upstairs
into a room that look like someone had redone the house and the room and the lights work we were

The Math Code: Numbers
In the film: "The Math Code: Numbers," we start out in a creepy setting that immediately pulls the
viewer in. Especially because this film is about numbers, the creepy settings gives the viewer a
different impression. Professor Marcus de Sautoy explains how numbers represent the entire
universe. In the film, viewers learn about many things. Marcus tells how numbers and ratios make
up the Chartres Cathedral. He studies bugs that only hatch on prime number years, and teaches the
viewers how numbers are involved in music. The film focuses a lot on the math code, or Pi. In this
film, I learned many things. Some things were very interesting, and others were confusing. Overall,
I thoroughly enjoyed this film. I found many things that were interesting in this film. Right from the
start I was pulled in. Marcus talked about the number 7, which is my favorite number. He said that
the number 7 represents the entire universe. He went on to explain that the number 10 is beyond the

I already knew a lot about stars, but I still learned some cool things that I haven't heard before. I

that a person can use the math code to find out where the stars will be positioned in the far future.
Overall, the section on stars, was my favorite part of this film. This film also leaves me with
multiple questions. If numbers can predict multiple things, why are so many things about the
universe left unanswered? Who discovered Pi, and why is it never ending? After watching this film,
I feel as if Pi is relevant to everything that surrounds us. If Pi is so important, why isn't it taught
more in schools? The film covered multiple areas, but leaves the viewer with unanswered

The film the descent uses a range of shots, sound, editing and symbolisation to create an ominous
atmosphere; in effect this makes the horror aspect in the film really stand out as it leaves the viewer

This all makes the film very subjective and leaves much of the opening scenes open to interpretation
which is very enticing for a horror movie.

Also in the final scene Sarah leaves Juno for dead to get revenge on what she did to Beth which also

Sarah, Beth and Juno would be seeing things. These edits are also giving a very clear representation

Enter The Void (2010) is a film about a young man, Oscar who lives with his sister in Tokyo, Japan.
He is shot dead by police whilst taking hallucinogenic drugs and becomes trapped in an intermediate

Impromptu Research Paper
Have you ever been tapped to make an impromptu group presentation with a half hour's notice?
When is the last time someone asked you for a "brief update" on the status of an upcoming project in
"about an hour"?
Did you ever stand up in the heat of a membership meeting where negativity prevailed and asked
members to consider a more positive stance on an issue?
These scenarios require you to "think on your feet" – give an impromptu speech – if you do not
want to embarrass yourself, and want to demonstrate your knowledge and mental organization.
A well–prepared presentation is possible at the last minute. Be the envy of your organization and
become the go–to person with the strong communication skills by taking initiative and being willing

You can apply the same mantra to impromptu presentations. Sear the basic structure of a
presentation into your memory and volunteer to give speeches on the spot. The more you practice
giving impromptu presentations, the more comfortable you become doing so. Just as people trained
to respond to emergencies at a moment's notice, you will be able to respond with a solid presentation
at a moment's notice.
Consider the following key points as well as how to best communicate the content that is necessary
for the requested presentation.
Please With Threes
A lesson I teach early in my presentation skills workshops, and that I learned in school and in
Toastmasters clubs, is to "please with threes". Otherwise called the rule of threes, this means that
you create a presentation using a speech structure that consists of three main components: an
opening, a body, and a closing. Manage these three major parts of a presentation and your speech
will be organized every time.
Get Off on the Right Foot

The Opening Line Of Hamlet 's Speech Essay
The opening line of Hamlet's speech, "to be or not to be" could be considered Shakespeare's most
famous as often times it is easily recognized and quoted without any real understanding of its
significance (3.1.1749). At this moment, this question is of the utmost importance, literally a
question of life and death; however, its simple phrasing gives it a significance greater than just
Hamlet in his moment of despair. Hamlet poses the question in the cloudiest yet clearest way
possible. He does not ask can I live with this or should I just end my life, rather "to be or not to be"
(3.1.1749). It is not just life but existence as a whole being debated in his soliloquy. In using one of
the simplest verbs in the English language, the choice of words and a general idea of the overall plot
assure that the question will undoubtedly be received on the most basic level, life and death. The
verb is presented in the infinitive, "to be," leaving the line unattached to any person, not even the
speaker. The line is given perfect balance by placing the same verb on either side of the dividing
"or" (3.1.1749). Shakespeare strips down the subject to its most basic yet abstract level. There are no
flowery imagery or allusions to outside events that could explain the line's purpose or give it a
hidden meaning, surely this simplicity is one reason why the line has continued throughout time
even into pop culture. The speech's first line reads naturally. The stressed syllables fall in order

Introduction
Many cultures have come to know and love Australia since the country's liberty due to federation
back in 1901. However this was not always the case, the Aboriginal people, the original inhabitants
of the land and their ancestors had their land taken away from them by force due to the efforts to
establish colonies by the British. The most immediate was consequence of the British invasion was a
wave of diseases the Europeans brought with them, Through the power of speech and words as a
whole, it allowed for the Aboriginal people to embrace their culture for who they are and leave their
former selves in the dust of their forefathers who have come ... Show more content on

The songwriter obviously was trying to point out what measures can be taken to prevent war and
other unhappy realities. The view of the song is of social reform and very political. It was a protest
song that was written in 1971, during the Vietnam War. It was meant for a large audience of not only
hippies, but anyone who supports peace.
Sub point – Repetition and emphasis on words
This song contains very simple words to understand, yet it is so profound. There doesn't seem to be
any symbolism here. Lennon repeated the words "Imagine" and "all the people" numerous times for
emphasis. This was achieved by ending on a rhyme on lines two and four of every stanza.
Sub point This song really is asking the listener to give up on discrimination based on ethnicity,
social class, religion, nationalism, and the like. John Lennon is right that these prejudices can be
eradicated when we stop believing in these categories that separate people. For example, almost any
war ever fought had to do with religious beliefs. Maybe that wouldn't happen if everyone could
practice tolerance or even thrive with theological debate. There has been ethnic cleansing and
genocide, too. When people have an unequal share of wealth, it leads to greed, power struggles, and
hunger. This is not to say that he is a communist, but that it is unfair and ironic that one country will
have a large percentage of it people starving

Analysis Of Shakespeare In Love
The film Shakespeare in Love is a wonderful movie directed by John Madden. The film seems
pretty straightforward at the beginning, but there are subtle things that make the film more enticing.
John Madden added these things to make the film look and feel more real. I will be discussing more
about this film white discussing its impact on myself and the audience.
This film was set during 1590`s and that is a very important fact that must be remembered while
reviewing, especially when thinking of Madden's vision of the film while directing. In the opening
sequence, we see the director using subtle hints that help set the tone of the film. The opening
credits are in black and white and because of this, we know that the film is set in an early time
period. This, as well as the font, is what we would associate with old England. Although this was an
interesting effect used to create the setting, the opening sequence as a whole, was extremely boring.
Even though it was boring, the music was there to fill the gap and not leave the audience lulled to
sleep. The instruments chosen and the frequent melodic tones helped further shape the setting of old
England. It is obvious that Madden loved music because it is almost omni–present throughout the
film. The instruments are mostly string instruments which are often accredited to classical music.
The pitch, the tempo, and the loudness of the music play major roles along with the selection of
instruments. If there is an important part of

Falling Down Sequence
The opening sequence in the film "Falling Down" portrays how everyday activities can take a turn
for the worst. It begins with the main character William Foster stuck in a traffic jam on the highway
caused by construction. The first shot that opens the scene is an extreme close up of Foster's face,
which allows the audience to see him in great detail. We see by his heavy breathing and sweat
dripping down his face that he is in a hot environment. The camera starts to zoom out and go into a
tracking shot, which allows us to see the environment that surrounds him. This is also an
establishing shot. The car directly in front of Foster has a young girl starring out the back window
towards him. There is a school bus two lanes over to his right that ... Show more content on

As the scene progresses, you see how each event is causing Foster's temper to rise and his patience
to grow thinner. Foster constantly plays with his AC unit, which is broken, reinforcing that the
temperature outside is hot. Another factor adding to his frustration is the fly stuck in his car. It is
buzzing around him and repeatedly landing on his neck causing him to keep swatting at it. The
usage of quick cuts gives the impression of tension building up for the character throughout the
scene. This gives off the impression that something worse is constantly happening to Foster and he
is unable to escape his uncomfortable reality. The AC breaking, window roller broken, kids
screaming, cars honking and the heat wave itself are all shown so quickly so that the viewer is
seeing that everything is being thrown at Foster at once and that he is starting to feel very
claustrophobic and cannot seem to escape it. When everything hits its peak he decides to quickly get
out of his vehicle, which serves as his escape as the music and sounds subside to a normal level and
he is now calmer and decides to just walk home

Essay On Melinda's Life
In the start of the novel, Melinda's life is completely frozen. She struggles in school, fights with her
parents, and most importantly, doesn't open up to anyone about her feelings. As the novel extends to
the middle point, Melinda slowly begins to thaw. Not only does she start to unfreeze, she begins to
open up to specific and important people in her life. Opening up allows her to feel true happiness
and trust. FInally, as the book starts to make way towards the ending, Melinda is starting to fully
unveil and open up to important people in her life. The author is explaining that if the character
thaws out instead of holding it all in, the character's life will become much better. Melinda will have

Pretty Little Liars: Opening Credit Analysis
Reading a Media Text
Pretty Little Liars' Opening Credits
I have chosen to interpret, in both connotatively and denotatively ways, the opening credits to one of
ABC Family's most acclaimed TV show, Pretty Little Liars. It premiered in the early summer of
2010. Based on a teen/drama/mystery series, this show has rapidly gained success. When you watch
the opening credits for the first time without knowing anything about the show, it's easy to guess
what the show is about; but once you know or at least have a clue of the drama, it's easier to notice
the relationship between the introduction and the content. The introduction starts off with a girl,
getting ready for something; her nails, hair and makeup are being done. Then, ... Show more content

The girls standing behind the casket are a dressed in black because it's the correct attire for a funeral,
but they represent the "pretty" in the title of the show, meaning that they still keep their style and
sexiness at peak. Finally, the title of the show is placed over dark clouds symbolizing that something
bad has, or will happen. As state before, the theme song of the introduction is a song called "Secret".
This song and, more specifically its lyrics, link perfectly everything from the intro to the drama and
conflict of the show. The song has a kind of scary and mysterious melody. The lyrics of the song
say: "Got a secret, can you keep it, swear this one you'll save. Better lock it in your pocket, taking
this one to the grave ... and to can keep a secret if one of them is dead". The lyrics of the song help
the viewer analyze the intro and because of this they may come to the conclusion that the four girls
in the back of the casket may have something to do with the death of the girl.
The girls' faces give the viewer a lot of information. Their facial expressions gives away the fact that
they are hiding something. Their posture, and the way they move implies that they have some sort of
secret they are trying not to give away. It can be implied that the four girls are hiding the same thing
and that that is what is keeping them close together. I remember the first time I saw the introduction,

Alfred Hitchcock Vertigo Opening Scene
Study the opening credits and visuals of vertigo. How does the opening convey the film?
In the essay I will be exploring how the opening credit scene of the film vertigo (Hitchcock 1958)
conveys the film. I will be analysing the credit scene through the use of visuals, sound. Editing
colours and symbols. In addition to this I will be exploring relevant theories. Multiple theories can
be applied to the credit scene such as Roland Barthes semiotics theory and Stuarts halls
representations theory it can also be argued that jean baudrillard's theory of hyper reality could be
applicable to the credit scene.
At the beginning of the sequence the audience is greeted with the visuals of a woman's face however
multiple close ups are used on the women's this straight creates an awkward feeling to the audience.

All these effects contribute and reflect the thriller genre. Firstly an extreme close up is used on the
women's face this specifically on the lips and eyes this straight away conveys the message to the
audience that a female presence will be relevant within the film also a red filter was put onto the
screen this may connote to the audience that there will be a love interest within the film or there will
be gore and violence. However after the filter is placed a pink spiral within the women eyes starts to
emerge and also seems to get bigger and bigger this strongly foreshadows that there will be a female
protagonist and also a love interest as the colour red and pink strongly symbolise love/lust and
femininity. Also to complement this the background colour is very DE saturated and dark this makes
the visuals look more bold and highlighted thus making the overall effect greater. The black DE

Analysis Of Transparent By Mort Pfefferman
As Jill Soloway's TV show Transparent begins, the opening credits offer a glimpse into the ideas of
gender. From the lighting of a candle, symbolizing light into the darkness of life, to a shimmering
blue dress–that worn by a female impersonator–the opening credits reveal the process of becoming a
transgender. Transitioning from a male to a female, or vice–versa, is a feat that only a few come to
do. However, in the show Transparent, Mort Pfefferman transitions into Maura Pfefferman, a
masculine figure who blossoms in femininity and bravery. While it is already a difficult task to come
out as transgender, Maura has to deal with the drama revolving with her family.
Throughout the first season of Transparent, gender identity is explored and seen through the
challenges that the characters face. For instance, Maura struggles to reveal his true identity to his
children. In episode 1, "Pilot," Mort calls his children and invites them to dinner. The children
suspect that Maura has a terminal disease; however, Maura is planning on revealing his greatest
secret: that she is transitioning. Later that evening, after Sarah and Josh leave, Ali, the child who
Maura sees resemblance in the most, stays aside to talk to Maura. They have a quick conversation
about their days, but before Ali leaves, Maura utters "Boy, it is so hard when someone sees
something you do not want them to see" (Citation). This quote truly reveals the overarching message
of the television show: we all hold secrets.

The Room
The Room I was sleeping soundly in my new house. My mother and I recently moved out from our
old house after my parents got divorced. I loved our old house. I lived in there ever since I could
remember. All the memories still so clear. Like, under the big oak tree in our front yard where my
first dog named Daisy is buried. Or the treehouse in the backyard where I used to play with my
dolls, and read my favorite childhood book "Red light, green light." Which is also of the game me
and my friends down the road used to play on the paved driveway in my front yard that my
handprint is molded in. But anyway, back to the story. I was in my room sleeping soundly when all
of the sudden I heard a big crash downstairs. My eyelids popped open, I sat up quickly and spun my
head both ways. The room was black as pitch. The only light was the reflection of the moonlight
shining through the the window. I lifted my blanket and moved my legs off of the bed. I rubbed my
eyes with my hands as I stood up. It was still pitch black. Now I have only been in this house for 3
days, but I still know my way around the place. I walked in a straight path feeling around for the
light switch. After I found it, I flicked the switch and the lights came on with a quiet buzzing noise. I
spun the doorknob and gave the door a little push, but the door still seemed to creak loudly. I looked
ahead of me. The hallway I was standing in was a lot brighter then my room had been because the

The Use of Narrative in Film Essay
The Use of Narrative in Film
The use of Narrative in film and other forms of media is commonplace; it has become such that the
media viewer has not only come to expect it but rely on it somewhat. There are two elements in
narrative film today that combine in the engaging of the audience; 'story' and 'production' elements.
One example in the Australian film industry of the use of production and story elements in such a
way as to engage the audiences' attention is the film 'Two Hands'. The film Two Hands was directed
in 1999 by Gregor Jordan, a then virtual nobody. The film boasts an all–Australian cast and is full of
Australian humor and irony. It is a film that was loved by critics and the public alike and has been

The dialogue in this scene is the most helpful in terms of establishing the storylines and grabbing the
attention of the viewer. We learn that Jim owes Pando $10,000 for which he will soon be killed, we
learn that Jim will give Pando $15.000 if he lets him go ("I'm doing a job tomorrow. Let me go and
I'll give you 15"), we learn that Pando is willing to give Jim a chance by letting him try 013, and that
Pando really doesn't want to have to kill him but it seems like he has little choice ("sorry Jimmy").
The next section of the opening sequence takes us back to what is seemingly the beginning of the
film, to the heart of King's Cross. Jim is standing out the front of a strip joint with a friend of his. It
seems the two are employed by the club to entice male passer–buyers into the club. Through their
dialogue the viewer can deduce that Jim intends on doing some work for someone name Pando, who
incidentally is someone 'you don't want to get mixed up with'. The viewer may also conclude that
Jim is unhappy with his current line of work and wishes to move up through the King's Cross
'hierarchy', so to speak, by doing this job.
During this scene Jim's relationship with Pando and Alex are established, or re–established in the
case of Pando. Jim's first impressions of Alex, an Alex's first impressions of Jim are evident through

The Opening Sequences of David Lean and Alfonso Cuaron's Film Version of Great Expectations
In this media assignment I shall be analyzing and comparing the similarities and differences of two
famous directors' film versions of 'Great Expectations'. The two directors are David Lean and
Alfonso Cuaron. David Lean's version was more popular and well known than Alfonso Cuaron's
because Lean was the first director to actually direct 'Great Expectations'. This made it more
difficult for Alfonso Cuaron because he had to bring the film up to date by making the film more
modern and there have also been 10 other films based on the novel 'Great Expectations'. David Lean
had directed his version of 'Great ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is revealing to the audience that the film fits into the horror genre and is giving the audience
clues about what the film will include, such as an ominous atmosphere and scenes of violence and
gore. Lean has created this mood and theme so that the audience would want to know what the film
actually contains, whether it is horror or drama.
David Lean and Alfonso Cuaron are using the different techniques to keep the audience interested in
the movie. The soundtrack of both versions is different because Alfonso Cuaron has played music
throughout his opening frames. He has introduced sound effects such as waves that give the
audience a pleasant sound to their ears; this same effect is employed with seagulls. The music that is
actually played has a joyful and happy mood, which encourages the audience to think that the film is
a non–violent film. But when Magwitch appears from underneath the water in the tenth frame and
grabs Pip, at this point the music changes from joyful and happy to dramatic and shocking. Cuaron
deliberately did this to shock and alarm the audience from a happy and cheerful atmosphere to an
explicit and up–tempo atmosphere, this technique also keeps you interested in the film.
On the other hand David Lean has only played music in his opening

I am incredibly disappointed in the decision to close the Tualatin Haggen which has been a part of
the Tualatin community for many years. Our Haggen has been around for my entire life and I always

seems impractical to close the store before the lease is up. There will be an empty grocery store in
the heart of our town causing our economy to suffer drastically. If the lease was up, a new company
could buy the location and add a new store to our community, but, instead, the building will now sit

Cinematography In Arrival
Arrival, released in 2016 and directed by Charlie Villanueva, opens with a montage of a child's life
and early death. This montage appears to be a flashback that our protagonist experiences before the
events of the film. However, this introductory scene actually encourages the formation of a false
hypothesis, since the montage features events from the future, not the past. The primacy effect
strongly encourages the acceptance of this hypothesis, at least until the narration presents an
overwhelming amount of information to overturn it. Over the course of the film, the narration does
in fact present overwhelming information. However, it does so gradually by establishing a pattern of
redundant visions the protagonist, Louise, experiences. More ... Show more content on

The syuzhet reveals definitively that the opening sequence was a vision of the future rather than a
flashback. The first time the narration offers a little depth of knowledge of Louise is when she asks
Costello "Who is this child?". That is the exact moment the plot reveals with absolute certainty that
the visions are not flashbacks. This is the first time Louise comments on her visions, unleashing the
slightest bit of depth of knowledge on her character. Costello immediately responds: "Louise sees
future." Now the gaps begin to fill themselves quickly. Louise tries to explain to Weber that the
weapon the heptapods are trying to give humanity is their language, which causes whoever learns it
to begin to perceive time nonlinearly. Louise also begins to control these visions so she can receive
vital information from the future to save the day in the present. After the narration makes it obvious
that these visions are of the future, Louise stands in a field outside of the military base with Ian,
when a montage similar to the one at the beginning of the film plays. With the revelation of this
montage's true time frame, both primary enigmas have been answered, and the film can

Why is this therapy the best therapy for the disorder?
This is the best therapy for depression because patients need to feel like they are safe and able to
talk about their problems. In a closed environment, they will probably feel more comfortable
opening up about what is on their mind. I think a lot of people with depression believe they are
insignificant, or that no one cares about them, but having a person they can always rely on and talk
to will definitely change their minds about that. Their therapist will also be able to give them advice
about their situations, so they don't stay in their bad situations. With any other type of therapy, the
patient would not have these types of opportunities to talk.
How do you feel this type of therapy could be improved or more effective?
I think this therapy could be more effective if the therapist already knew why they were talking to
the patient. Perhaps they could have the patient fill out a questionnaire so the therapist has a better
idea of what is going on in their lives. I think it would also be helpful if the therapist got to know the
patient before they asked them about their problems.

Footloose Movie Analysis
Footloose "Tonight I gotta cut loose, footloose, kick off my sunday shoes. Jack, get back, come on
before we crack." (Footloose, Kenny Loggins) For this essay, I chose to watch Footloose made in
1984 and directed by Herbert Ross and Footloose made in 2011 directed by Craig Brewer. Both
movies centered around the town of Bomont, a secluded town with out of the ordinary beliefs. In
this town, dancing and partying of any sort was strictly against the law and teenagers were
seemingly miserable. There was little to no self expression and even listening to provocative music
or any music too loud, could get you a ticket with a hefty fine. The reason behind the strict rules is
that several years back, five teens from Bomont High School died in a car wreck after they were
drinking and dancing too much. Each of these movies have some things in common, but have more
differences than anything. Some of the main differences are the opening credits of each movie, how
and who Ren arrives to Bomont at the beginning of the movie, the "chicken" races between Ren and
Jeff, and the book burning in town square. In the 1984 version, the movie opens with the song
"Footloose" and the first thing the viewers see is the shoes and feet of many different people
dancing. One of the major things that you notice is the type and style of the shoes such as leg
warmers and socks with heels which tells you what era the movie was made in. As the credits roll
across the screen, the music continues to

Will the new building owner want to renew the stores lease? Keeping the New Sudbury location
open where competitor West 49 is moving in will affect store sales. Is it worth the risk to keep that

customers. St. Marseille worries about the success of the New Sudbury location once West 49 opens

Opening Scene In Arrival
The first scene of Arrival is a montage of a child's life and early death. This montage is suggested to
be a flashback that our protagonist experiences before the events of the film. However, this
introductory scene actually encourages the formation of a false hypothesis, since the montage is
actually of the future, not the past. The primacy effect ensures that this hypothesis will be accepted
as fact until an overwhelming amount of information is presented by the narration to overturn it.
Over the course of the film, the narration does present overwhelming information, however it does
so gradually establishing a pattern of redundant visions experienced by the protagonist, Louise.
These redundant visions experienced by Louise are the primary ... Show more content on

Louise's visions are always shown, but her own thoughts on the visions are not revealed until near
the end of the movie. Since her thoughts on the visions are not stated until the very end of the
movie, it is difficult to tell exactly what the visions are of, but, every vision releases some clues. For
example, in the visions that feature Louise and baby Hannah or young girl Hannah, Louise is always
wearing a wedding ring, whereas in reality she is not. In one vision, Hannah has made a Heptapod
out of clay, which would obviously not be possible if the vision were a flashback. Also, almost every
vision starts as Louise is studying the Heptapod's written language. It seems to be an odd
coincidence at first, but slowly it becomes clear that the language is what triggers the visions. On
top of that, the idea that language can affect the way an individual thinks and perceives time is
introduced very early in the film, and reiterated several times. This is another clue the narration
offers that the Heptapod language itself may be the cause of Louise's visions. The narration drops all
these clues as to what the visions really are, but it is not until the very end of the film where they

  • 1. Examples Of Opening Speech Opening speech (Formal opening) Good afternoon ladies and gentleman, thanks everyone for being here today at this important conference. We are honored to be the first speakers here. Before I begin, I would like to complement this institution on its efforts to create a sustainable environment. (Hook) Let me tell you a story, in 1878, Paris hosted the first International Exposition of Electricity, as part of the World Fair hosted at that city the same year. The city was lively with excitement, as great inventors and innovators from around the world came to exhibit their ideas–Ideas that would drive a new era of human development. (Hook continued, used later as reference) New technology such as the telephone, and photography was displayed. However, the star of the show was undoubtedly Thomas Edison. Who in Paris displayed his electric light bulb. Electric lighting bulbs had been installed all along the Avenue de l'Opera and the Place de l'Opera. When the electric switched was flipped, light flooded the streets of Paris and France stepped into the age of electric energy. People were happy to embrace electrification and wanted electrification, but electricity was extremely expensive. At the beginning only the very rich could afford access. It wasn't until 1937, ... Firstly, the Fresh Meat opening titles begins with a notice which states that "All University housing is strictly Non– Smoking." The prefix 'non' is crossed out and replaced with the "weed". This linguistic sign of the word 'weed' can be signified as a slang term for marijuana, an illegal drug. Next, the iconic signs of a bicycle helmet, bullet holes and wine shown. Following on from this is a television set with an abstract green visual. This visual could be signified as similar to a computer screensaver. A metallic toy robot is indicated which creates sparks. Furthermore, the iconic signs of a pin board with photos of people attached to it are presented. The linguistic sign of an actor's name then disappears through a hole in the wall. There is a signifier of blue shapes strung ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This may connote a character who is a computer nerd. This characterisation may also be demonstrated with the toy robot. Following on from McHigh's character is Kimberley Nixon's. Above Nixon's name is a photo frame with an array of images depicting the character's friendships. This could represent a very social personality. The actor's name disappearing through the hole in the wall may suggest an imperfect character with flaws. A hole in the wall may also enable communication between two rooms that are separated by the wall. The blue lights above Charlotte Ritchie's name may symbolise a mysterious character as this shade of blue is sometimes seen this way. The mirror may indicate a character who is self–conscious. It could be perceived by the audience that Josh Thomas' character enjoys listening or playing music. The toiletries may also suggest that the character values looking after his appearance. The model which may be associated with Jack Whitehall's character suggests a promiscuous character or 'play ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Evaluation of the Opening Scenes of an Episode of the X–Files The opening sequence of the 'X–Files' episode 'Tooms' uses a variety of techniques to capture the attention of the audience. The 'X–Files' is a very popular television series written by Chris Carter. The series can be described as a 'hybrid' genre because it reflects a number of different genres. The obvious genre is Science Fiction because one of the main themes of the series is the paranormal. However there are strong elements of the Mystery/Detective genre as the two main characters, which are FBI investigators, seek to find the truth of the paranormal. There is also a Horror/Gothic element to the series because many investigations ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The affect of this is that the man seems vulnerable, and raises the audience's suspicion of what is going to happen to him. There is then a tracking shot of the man inter–cut with a close up of a roadside drain, where the creature 'Tooms' is lurking. When focused on the drain, the camera slowly zooms in. when the camera cuts back to the man; it is a low angle tracking shot. This low angle shot gives the impression to the audience that they are looking through the eyes of whatever is in the drain. This gives the scene a sinister and foreboding atmosphere. This is emphasised when the camera zooms in of the businessman in a low angle shot and gradually becomes slow motion. The entire colour is then drained out of the frame except for the man. This emphasises the earlier point, and suggests the creature in the drain is focusing all his attention and malice on the man. At this point there is a section of music that sounds computer generated, almost alien. This adds to the malice of the creature and is repeated throughout the opening scene when there is evidence that the creature in the drain is near. This shot is then followed by a close up of the drain, showing two strange pale eyes. This maintains the audiences attention because it makes them want to discover what is in the drain and why it is there. The camera then cuts to a shot of a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Comparison Between The Others and The Sixth Sense Essay Comparison Between The Others and The Sixth Sense The blockbuster movies 'The Sixth Sense' and 'The Others' are two of the best examples of supernatural thrillers you will ever see. Both storylines are gripping and compelling and there are many unsuspected twists and turns along the way. 'The Sixth Sense' and 'The Others' have comparable storylines because they are both based on the idea of a parallel universe in which supernatural and human beings are closer than anyone realises. Both movies have an ability to keep you guessing throughout and unexpectedly surprising you. 'The Sixth Sense' is about a distinguished child psychologist, Dr Malcolm Crowe who is haunted by the painful memory of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If they do not catch your attention and generate anticipation, it is likely that you will not enjoy the movie. From the opening credits, with their white–on–black minimalism and the stealthy, suggestive music, it's clear that 'The Sixth Sense' is going to have you on the edge of your seat the whole way through. The black of the background symbolises darkness and the feeling of unawareness and the contrasting glowing white writing stands out against it. As the scrolling credits fade into the background followed by shadows; it sets an eerie atmosphere, which prepares you for the rest of the movie. The haunting music gets more intense as the credits roll on, which builds tension towards the opening scene, as it starts with complementary near silence to add impact. The opening credits in 'The Others' also create a similar ghostly setting as in 'The Sixth Sense' although I feel that the credits in 'The Others' are more chilling and quite shocking. They start relatively harmless, however we are still tense and edgy because we know there is irony behind this and that the story will not turn out to be so innocent. This is proved as the credits roll on and the images become more disturbing and terrifying. The gentle voice over is also ironic because it leaves the audience wondering why such a kind voice, talking ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The idea is to catch the imagination of the audience and draw them into the film so they wish to watch all of it. There are lots of factors the director has to take into account when making the opening the scene these range from camera shots all the way through to sound. Essay on Narrative Report on 'Vertigo' Assignment 1: Narrative report on Vertigo Establishing the difference between the story and the plot allows one to determine the effect each element has on the understanding and interpretation of the piece. It also provides a way of tracking the continuation of events and the relationship between seemingly isolated moments in time. Film Art clearly defines both story and plot but acknowledges that there is a significant overlap between the two functions and allows a flow within the film. The opening scene builds on the credits by creating the expectation of suspense and thrill and mystery shrouding the true identity and relation of characters and setting up the disposableness of characters in the film, this adds to the complexity of Madeline's disease as the audience cant tell whether, or more when, she will die. The rooftop chase creates an expectation of dark drama, which moves into the scene with Midge in a light filled room where Scottie appears to be in control of his fear and the relationship between the two characters is established, whilst not technically part of the opening scene it instantly makes the viewer question whether their interpretation of the initial segment of the film was correct, already one is questioning their ability to pick the direction of the film. The narrative complexity in Breaking Bad owes also to the show's enigmatic and transformative characters. Walt is depicted as an upstanding family man, working two jobs to provide for his family and enriching young minds as a teacher. The first episode of the show features a scene in which Walt discusses the concepts of chemistry and specifically the notion of chemistry phases of change to his high school students. This analogy of chemical change can appropriately be adapted to understand Walt's psychological changes. The audience is presented with a man who is depicted as a victim of modern day society. Analogous to many other individuals, Walt is the breadwinner in the White family with financial struggles such that his teacher's compensation is not enough to cover his expenses. The show goes on about Mary being with Francis, future King of France. Unfortunately, it's not your typical fairytale, you know the one that has a happy ending? Sadly, Francis doesn't live. His mother, Queen Catherine, has a mysterious friend named Nostradamus who can predict the future before it happens. He predicted that Francis would die a slow painful death, but faith had a change of heart. Francis and Mary finally got to see each other after some many years has passed. They had been engaged since the age of six, and this engagement was arranged by their parents. As the show goes on the tone went from optimistic to negative. Nostradamus's visions were to the point where he predicted everything that would and should happen. Queen Catherine got very frustrated with his visions and told him to leave French Court immediately. Ultimately, the tone of the show is what brings the story, plot, and purpose altogether; it is also a very important factor when you're watching a new tv series. The overall ratings of the show are what makes the audience want to watch it. If the show has a bad rating nine times out of ten, the viewers aren't going to watch it. Reign has a rating of a 7.6 on a site called IMDB, and that stands for Internet Movie Data Base. On this site, there were 35,075 people that voted. It has a rating of an 8.4 on a site called TV.com and only 470 people voted. It also has a rating of a 7.8 on a site called Metacritic and only 77 people voted. Some of the voted were bad and some good. There were only 22 votes that were based on critics. These are fair ratings, so the audience would take the time to watch it and maybe watch it again. The Opening Speech of Richard III in William Shakespeare's Play Richard III is a historical play and we are drawn to this factor from Richard's speech at the opening of the play. Shakespeare uses Richard's character as his main device for setting the scene. As it is a play the audience would see Richard entering on a bare stage and this alone would leave an effect of them which would soon be reinforced by the speech he is about to give. In the course of the speech, Richard says, "I am determined to prove a villain" Quickly the audience is made to believe that evil, is the source of Richard's pleasure and that At no point in the duration of his speech does Richard hesitate to think or question himself. Which may show him to be a spontaneous person. As he continues Richard shares his plans quite intimately and very generously with the audience. He tells us that he has caused trouble between his brothers, George, Duke of Clarence and King Edward. We are made of Richard's true treacherous nature when he says, "Dive, thoughts, down to my soul: here Clarence comes.." • 25. Descriptive Essay On An Abandoned House A group of friends walked up to an old, seemingly abandoned house. They couldn't see inside because of the dirt and cobwebs on the windows. When they turned the doorknob to see if it was locked, the door creaked open as if it has been closed for years. Me and my friends , Hayden ,Annie ,Kacy , and Rush were walking up old stairs to this abandoned house . As we walk in the house the door shut Annie screamed and I told her to ,''shut up ,'' we all didn't think about the door closing on its on except Annie . So we keep walking around to see if there is light willed Annie keeps yapping about the door. As we were walking around to see if there was light , we did not proceed that we were in a abound house so the light will not work because no one lives here so no one could pay the bills . So we looked in Rush's bag to get the flashlights . As we walk around Kacy started to joke around like what if we die , or what if theres ghost ,or what if we get trap here , so that made Annie really scared . kacy loves to try to scarier use but it doesn't work expect Annie . Especially because this film is about numbers, the creepy settings gives the viewer a different impression. Professor Marcus de Sautoy explains how numbers represent the entire universe. In the film, viewers learn about many things. Marcus tells how numbers and ratios make up the Chartres Cathedral. He studies bugs that only hatch on prime number years, and teaches the viewers how numbers are involved in music. The film focuses a lot on the math code, or Pi. In this film, I learned many things. Some things were very interesting, and others were confusing. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this film. I found many things that were interesting in this film. Right from the start I was pulled in. Overall, the section on stars, was my favorite part of this film. This film also leaves me with multiple questions. If numbers can predict multiple things, why are so many things about the universe left unanswered? Who discovered Pi, and why is it never ending? The Descent Grade a The film the descent uses a range of shots, sound, editing and symbolisation to create an ominous atmosphere; in effect this makes the horror aspect in the film really stand out as it leaves the viewer deciding what happens in specific parts of the film, which all ties in with the films ending. This all makes the film very subjective and leaves much of the opening scenes open to interpretation which is very enticing for a horror movie. The more you practice giving impromptu presentations, the more comfortable you become doing so. Just as people trained to respond to emergencies at a moment's notice, you will be able to respond with a solid presentation at a moment's notice. Consider the following key points as well as how to best communicate the content that is necessary for the requested presentation. Please With Threes A lesson I teach early in my presentation skills workshops, and that I learned in school and in Toastmasters clubs, is to "please with threes". Otherwise called the rule of threes, this means that you create a presentation using a speech structure that consists of three main components: an opening, a body, and a closing. Manage these three major parts of a presentation and your speech will be organized every time. Get Off on the Right Foot Develop an attention–grabbing opening. • 38. The Opening Line Of Hamlet 's Speech Essay The opening line of Hamlet's speech, "to be or not to be" could be considered Shakespeare's most famous as often times it is easily recognized and quoted without any real understanding of its significance (3.1.1749). At this moment, this question is of the utmost importance, literally a question of life and death; however, its simple phrasing gives it a significance greater than just Hamlet in his moment of despair. Hamlet poses the question in the cloudiest yet clearest way possible. He does not ask can I live with this or should I just end my life, rather "to be or not to be" (3.1.1749). It is not just life but existence as a whole being debated in his soliloquy. In using one of the simplest verbs in the English language, the choice of words and a general idea of the overall plot assure that the question will undoubtedly be received on the most basic level, life and death. The verb is presented in the infinitive, "to be," leaving the line unattached to any person, not even the speaker. The line is given perfect balance by placing the same verb on either side of the dividing "or" (3.1.1749). Shakespeare strips down the subject to its most basic yet abstract level. There are no flowery imagery or allusions to outside events that could explain the line's purpose or give it a hidden meaning, surely this simplicity is one reason why the line has continued throughout time even into pop culture. It was meant for a large audience of not only hippies, but anyone who supports peace. Sub point – Repetition and emphasis on words This song contains very simple words to understand, yet it is so profound. There doesn't seem to be any symbolism here. Lennon repeated the words "Imagine" and "all the people" numerous times for emphasis. This was achieved by ending on a rhyme on lines two and four of every stanza. John Lennon is right that these prejudices can be eradicated when we stop believing in these categories that separate people. For example, almost any war ever fought had to do with religious beliefs. • 42. Analysis Of Shakespeare In Love The film Shakespeare in Love is a wonderful movie directed by John Madden. The film seems pretty straightforward at the beginning, but there are subtle things that make the film more enticing. John Madden added these things to make the film look and feel more real. I will be discussing more about this film white discussing its impact on myself and the audience. This film was set during 1590`s and that is a very important fact that must be remembered while reviewing, especially when thinking of Madden's vision of the film while directing. In the opening sequence, we see the director using subtle hints that help set the tone of the film. The opening credits are in black and white and because of this, we know that the film is set in an early time period. This, as well as the font, is what we would associate with old England. Although this was an interesting effect used to create the setting, the opening sequence as a whole, was extremely boring. Even though it was boring, the music was there to fill the gap and not leave the audience lulled to sleep. The instruments chosen and the frequent melodic tones helped further shape the setting of old England. It is obvious that Madden loved music because it is almost omni–present throughout the film. The instruments are mostly string instruments which are often accredited to classical music. The pitch, the tempo, and the loudness of the music play major roles along with the selection of instruments. If there is an important part of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This song and, more specifically its lyrics, link perfectly everything from the intro to the drama and conflict of the show. The song has a kind of scary and mysterious melody. The lyrics of the song say: "Got a secret, can you keep it, swear this one you'll save. The lyrics of the song help the viewer analyze the intro and because of this they may come to the conclusion that the four girls in the back of the casket may have something to do with the death of the girl. The girls' faces give the viewer a lot of information. Their facial expressions gives away the fact that they are hiding something. From the lighting of a candle, symbolizing light into the darkness of life, to a shimmering blue dress–that worn by a female impersonator–the opening credits reveal the process of becoming a transgender. Transitioning from a male to a female, or vice–versa, is a feat that only a few come to do. However, in the show Transparent, Mort Pfefferman transitions into Maura Pfefferman, a masculine figure who blossoms in femininity and bravery. While it is already a difficult task to come out as transgender, Maura has to deal with the drama revolving with her family. It was still pitch black. Now I have only been in this house for 3 days, but I still know my way around the place. I walked in a straight path feeling around for the light switch. After I found it, I flicked the switch and the lights came on with a quiet buzzing noise. I spun the doorknob and gave the door a little push, but the door still seemed to creak loudly. The Opening Sequences of David Lean and Alfonso Cuaron's Film Version of Great Expectations In this media assignment I shall be analyzing and comparing the similarities and differences of two famous directors' film versions of 'Great Expectations'. The two directors are David Lean and Alfonso Cuaron. David Lean's version was more popular and well known than Alfonso Cuaron's because Lean was the first director to actually direct 'Great Expectations'. This made it more difficult for Alfonso Cuaron because he had to bring the film up to date by making the film more modern and there have also been 10 other films based on the novel 'Great Expectations'. David Lean had directed his version of 'Great ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is revealing to the audience that the film fits into the horror genre and is giving the audience clues about what the film will include, such as an ominous atmosphere and scenes of violence and gore. Lean has created this mood and theme so that the audience would want to know what the film actually contains, whether it is horror or drama. David Lean and Alfonso Cuaron are using the different techniques to keep the audience interested in the movie. The soundtrack of both versions is different because Alfonso Cuaron has played music throughout his opening frames. He has introduced sound effects such as waves that give the audience a pleasant sound to their ears; this same effect is employed with seagulls. The music that is actually played has a joyful and happy mood, which encourages the audience to think that the film is a non–violent film. But when Magwitch appears from underneath the water in the tenth frame and grabs Pip, at this point the music changes from joyful and happy to dramatic and shocking. Cuaron deliberately did this to shock and alarm the audience from a happy and cheerful atmosphere to an explicit and up–tempo atmosphere, this technique also keeps you interested in the film. On the other hand David Lean has only played music in his opening ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 62. Personal Narrative: My Decision To Close The Tualatin Haggen I am incredibly disappointed in the decision to close the Tualatin Haggen which has been a part of the Tualatin community for many years. Our Haggen has been around for my entire life and I always feel at home when I go there; a feeling I believe I share with many of its other customers. I'm friends with many of the employees and am incredibly saddened to hear that almost all of them will have no place to work after the store closes. The people who work there are some of the kindest and hardest working people I have ever met and deserve to have a feeling of security knowing where their next paycheck is coming from. If the Tualatin Haggen does indeed close I hope there is some way to allow the 73 people who work at the store to find new jobs within your company. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It's a place where people feel happy and are always surrounded by employees who care. It's a friendly environment that's hard to find at other stores these days. There are many families I have talked to who have no idea where they are going to shop after the store has closed. Additionally, it seems impractical to close the store before the lease is up. There will be an empty grocery store in the heart of our town causing our economy to suffer drastically. If the lease was up, a new company could buy the location and add a new store to our community, but, instead, the building will now sit there until the lease is up. Also, it is unfair to refuse to restock the store. It is unfair to the employees who might be out of a job weeks before you told them they would. Being out of a job sooner than expected can be detrimental to many of the employee's lives, especially those with families to support. Lastly, it is unfair to the customers who wish to enjoy Haggen until the closing date on October ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 66. Cinematography In Arrival Arrival, released in 2016 and directed by Charlie Villanueva, opens with a montage of a child's life and early death. This montage appears to be a flashback that our protagonist experiences before the events of the film. However, this introductory scene actually encourages the formation of a false hypothesis, since the montage features events from the future, not the past. The primacy effect strongly encourages the acceptance of this hypothesis, at least until the narration presents an overwhelming amount of information to overturn it. Over the course of the film, the narration does in fact present overwhelming information. However, it does so gradually by establishing a pattern of redundant visions the protagonist, Louise, experiences. More ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The syuzhet reveals definitively that the opening sequence was a vision of the future rather than a flashback. The first time the narration offers a little depth of knowledge of Louise is when she asks Costello "Who is this child?". That is the exact moment the plot reveals with absolute certainty that the visions are not flashbacks. This is the first time Louise comments on her visions, unleashing the slightest bit of depth of knowledge on her character. Costello immediately responds: "Louise sees future." Now the gaps begin to fill themselves quickly. Louise tries to explain to Weber that the weapon the heptapods are trying to give humanity is their language, which causes whoever learns it to begin to perceive time nonlinearly. Louise also begins to control these visions so she can receive vital information from the future to save the day in the present. After the narration makes it obvious that these visions are of the future, Louise stands in a field outside of the military base with Ian, when a montage similar to the one at the beginning of the film plays. With the revelation of this montage's true time frame, both primary enigmas have been answered, and the film can ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I always feel this way. Therapist: And how would you describe how you feel? Jane: I feel hopeless. Like there is no point in trying. I am exhausted and I want to give up. Therapist: What do you mean by "give up?" What do you want to give up on? Jane: I don't know. I guess everything. Therapist: How long have you felt this way? Jane: Since the beginning of this school year, so a few months. Therapist: Is there nothing you enjoy? Any classes or clubs? Jane: I used to love school. Lately though, it has just felt like a chore. I feel like having to ask her so many questions made Jane kind of uncomfortable. I think in this situation, most patients would not open up, but rather shut down. I think that Jane could've stopped answering the questions before, but thankfully she decided to open up instead. Why is this therapy the best therapy for the disorder? This is the best therapy for depression because patients need to feel like they are safe and able to talk about their problems. In a closed environment, they will probably feel more comfortable opening up about what is on their mind. I think a lot of people with depression believe they are insignificant, or that no one cares about them, but having a person they can always rely on and talk to will definitely change their minds about that. Their therapist will also be able to give them advice about their situations, so they don't stay in their bad situations. With any other type of therapy, the patient would not have these types of opportunities to talk. How do you feel this type of therapy could be improved or more effective? I think this therapy could be more effective if the therapist already knew why they were talking to the patient. Perhaps they could have the patient fill out a questionnaire so the therapist has a better idea of what is going on in their lives. I think it would also be helpful if the therapist got to know the patient before they asked them about their problems. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 72. Footloose Movie Analysis Footloose "Tonight I gotta cut loose, footloose, kick off my sunday shoes. Jack, get back, come on before we crack." (Footloose, Kenny Loggins) For this essay, I chose to watch Footloose made in 1984 and directed by Herbert Ross and Footloose made in 2011 directed by Craig Brewer. Both movies centered around the town of Bomont, a secluded town with out of the ordinary beliefs. In this town, dancing and partying of any sort was strictly against the law and teenagers were seemingly miserable. There was little to no self expression and even listening to provocative music or any music too loud, could get you a ticket with a hefty fine. The reason behind the strict rules is that several years back, five teens from Bomont High School died in a car wreck after they were drinking and dancing too much. Each of these movies have some things in common, but have more differences than anything. Some of the main differences are the opening credits of each movie, how and who Ren arrives to Bomont at the beginning of the movie, the "chicken" races between Ren and Jeff, and the book burning in town square. In the 1984 version, the movie opens with the song "Footloose" and the first thing the viewers see is the shoes and feet of many different people dancing. One of the major things that you notice is the type and style of the shoes such as leg warmers and socks with heels which tells you what era the movie was made in. As the credits roll across the screen, the music continues to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Keeping the New Sudbury location open where competitor West 49 is moving in will affect store sales. Is it worth the risk to keep that location open? This store has been open at this location for 10 years and is well known by customers. St. Marseille worries about the success of the New Sudbury location once West 49 opens and estimates that in fiscal year 2004 annual store sales at this location would total $350,000 and all other expenses would remain comparatively stable. External perspectives The skateboarding and snowboarding business in Ontario has really grown. Skateboarding became a popular sport and by 2004 there were nine city skateboard parks and plans to construct three more in Sudbury. The city of London, Ontario has only four skateboard parks to serve a population of close to 350,000. By the growth of skateboard parks there is an opportunity for competition to move in as it is doing with the opening of West 49 at the New Sudbury Shopping Center. There is other competition in Sudbury, Pinnacle Sports, however that store is known for its biking and cross–country ski equipment and does carry a small amount of skateboarding and snowboarding equipment but its primary focus is biking and cross–country ski equipment . Louise's visions are always shown, but her own thoughts on the visions are not revealed until near the end of the movie. Since her thoughts on the visions are not stated until the very end of the movie, it is difficult to tell exactly what the visions are of, but, every vision releases some clues. For example, in the visions that feature Louise and baby Hannah or young girl Hannah, Louise is always wearing a wedding ring, whereas in reality she is not. In one vision, Hannah has made a Heptapod out of clay, which would obviously not be possible if the vision were a flashback. Also, almost every vision starts as Louise is studying the Heptapod's written language. It seems to be an odd coincidence at first, but slowly it becomes clear that the language is what triggers the visions. On top of that, the idea that language can affect the way an individual thinks and perceives time is introduced very early in the film, and reiterated several times. This is another clue the narration offers that the Heptapod language itself may be the cause of Louise's visions. The narration drops all these clues as to what the visions really are, but it is not until the very end of the film where they become ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
