2. Introduction
Every Star Wars film begins in a very similar way to set the scene and give
context to the narrative. The Star Wars movies aren’t released in order due to
the lack of technology at the time. their approach to solve this was to give
context on the narrative through the moving text which later became iconic.
The colour scheme used is black and yellow which suggests what is being
said is crucial as the black background behind the yellow symbolizes its
importance. The dramatic music playing throughout prepares the audience for
the action that is yet to come.

3. I began researching the most famous movie openings and came
across Star Wars A New Hope

The opening scene to this movie is amazing, it consists
of suspenseful music, CGI and advanced editing
which hasn't been seen before in film. The movie starts
with suspenseful music followed by the camera
panning down on two aircrafts fighting. The scene then
cuts to inside the spaceship where we meet Darth
Vader and R2-D2. The introduction was set up like this
to straight away entice the audience to the Star Wars
series as this film was revolutionary.
4. Analysis
In the opening scene we can straight away see the setting is space and the genre is
sci-fi. We can see this by the space setting and fighting spaceships. The sound
design connotes to the audience the alien/ space theme. Binary opposites is shown
through the two spaceships fighting, as one is 10x bigger than the other which
helps builds tension in the scene. In the spaceship we are introduced to two
characters who are advanced robots. One of them is named straight away which
instantly tells the audience they are a key part of the film as thats the conventions of
a sci-fi. The costume, props and set tells the audience it's a futuristic film set ahead
of time. We can see the characters are in danger “shut down mainframe” which
creates tension and engages the audience.
5. Top Boy (Netflix series)
Introduction:
In the first minute they set the scene of the series through the music, location
while introducing a few main characters. This opening told the audience the
genre UK crime and drama ) as well as giving the audience an insight of life
in East London. The characters are slowly introduced through B roll which
creates suspense to the audience as they are left guessing which ones are
symbolic in the series.
6. Analysis
Juxtaposition of the two lifestyles was used to show how little money the area
has compared to the rest of the city. Outdated shops with rubbish on the floor
compared to businessman walking through a busy city for work.
Little money connotes crime as statistically crime occurs in the areas with the
least money. This reiterates the narrative of crime, drama and potential
violence to the audience which gives them an idea of what to expect.
We are straight away told the group of boys are drug dealers and that there is a
problem with the prices (too high) due to brexit. This is the initial problem which I
suspect will lead to more.
7. YOU (Netflix series)
The series starts with an aerial shot of the city followed by a close up shot of the
street. This instantly tells the audience the location (America) as well as
introducing the shop (an iconic place in the series) This style of introduction sets
the scene and keeps the audience on the edge of their seat as they are left
wanting to know more. Throughout the whole series narration is a key element as
the main character uses narration in each episode to communicate his thoughts to
the audience to keep them in the know. The use of narration is definitely
something I could explore to portray the characters emotions rather than just
showing it.
8. Analysis
The setting is America which we are told straight away through aerial shots and a
close up of the building. The genre of the series is a thriller which is told through
the opening music sequence as its building suspense within the opening scene.
Two characters are first introduced, because of the mise en scene used we
cannot see their faces which creates suspense and leaves the audience guessing
what they look like. This technique hooks the audience in and keeps them
guessing from the get go. The relationship they have is strangers although in the
opening scene the man is trying to work out who she is, he does this by watching
her which in which we hear his initial thoughts.

10. The main personality trait for my desired target audience is someone who is
inquisitive. This is because someone who watches the opening scene will
constantly questions Jesse’s thought process as well as what’s going to
happen next as I finished the scene on a huge cliffhanger. With an
inquisitive audience I feel they will find the opening sequence very
interesting as there’s a potential of many outcomes which is left up to
audience interpretation.
The geographics for my audience is people who live in London as the
opening sequence is set in london, I believe people who live there will be
more inclined to watch the series as its filmed in their local area.
11. Behaviour
The behaviour characteristics for my target audience is someone who is
sensitive and emperfective as they will truly relate to jesse’s character and
emotions throughout. My intention is to make the audience feel sympathy
towards this character as her current life is a struggle.
