FAO’s support on REDD+ actions: examples
Examples of joint actions with governments and stakeholders providing support for:
• Preparation and implementation of drivers studies REDD+ strategies, investment plans
(e.g. Argentina, Equatorial Guinea, Ivory Coast, Vietnam)
• Mobilization of funding for REDD+ implementation (e.g. GCF Eq. Guinea; CAFI; Canada-Honduras)
• Private sector engagement & facilities (development of new project ideas)
• Capacity strengthening of local communities, women, IPs (e.g. Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, Zambia)
• Alternative livelihoods to reduce pressure on forests (e.g. agroforestry & climate-smart agric. Congo)
• Fire management and control (e.g. Chile)
Increasingly…
Including REDD+ actions into NDCs
Recognising mutual benefits with SDGs, land-use planning and restoration goals
Synergies with other processes that support governance (e.g. FLEGT)

Increasing support on formulation and implementation
of REDD+ actions
• Ensure enabling environment (e.g. governance,
tenure, gender and full participation)
• Enhance cross-sectorial collaboration and land-use
planning to boost mitigation and adaptation while
ensuring food security
• Promoting public-private partnerships and private-
sector engagement in REDD+
• Boosting contributions of local actors to national
processes
Support linking of REDD+ to NDCs and SDGs to foster
coordinated approach and sustainability
Generating knowledge and supporting countries in
achieving a transformational change in agriculture,
forestry and other land use sector.
Continuing support to countries on MRV
• Technical assistance on FREL, NFMS (NFI, SLMS), GHGi,
data for NDCs & reporting
REDD+ future at FAO
UNFCCC requests that countries interested in REDD+ process should develop/construct or strengthen four main pillars, through a step-wise approach. Until very recently, most countries and supporting initiatives/projects have focused on readiness phase .
In the past 10 years FAO worked strongly in the readiness phase, supporting countries focusing on two pillars: NFMS, FREL/FRL while also providing support and activities related to enabling environment (legal, tenure, safeguards).
As countries move from Readiness (phase 1) to Implementation (Phase 2), they are increasingly requesting technical assistance also beyond monitoring, for formulation and implementation of climate change mitigation actions, to reduce forest-related emissions, through specific sectorial and cross-sectorial actions.
FAO is well positioned to respond to this requests, as an agency with technical expertise in multiple land-uses. In Phase 2 FAO continues to provide technical assistance on NFMS and FREL/FRL, while expanding towards technical areas of implementation (from SFM to governance, tenure, land-use planning and enhancing synergies between agriculture and forestry)
The current challenge and opportunity is to: (1) continue supporting countries on NFMS and FREL/FRL, while also strengthening the support and moving into (ii) technical assistance to countries to implement REDD+ actions seeking synergies other processes (SDGs, restoration) and in the context of NDCs (mitigation forests actions mentioned by 103 countries’ (i)NDC and 78 countries for adaptation measures)

PHASE 2- Implementation phase
Refinement and implementation of REDD+ mitigation actions (Policy and Measures “PAMs” as per UNFCCC language)
Continuous strengthening of enabling environment for the implementation of mitigation actions
Refinement and full-scale deployment of NFMS/MRV, support countries in the continue monitoring of REDD+ results

In addition to the information in the slide, key principles for FAO work on implementation of REDD+ actions:
National ownership and country leadership;
Wider context of sustainable development and NDCs;
Relevance of emissions reductions & potential co-benefits;
Engagement of national stakeholders, Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and private sector actors including smallholders;
Commitment to gender equality and gender-responsive actions;
Address direct and underlying drivers through landscape approach;
SFM as framework for mitigation actions in the forest sector;
NFMS key role to inform decision making for REDD+ implementation;
Build on existing experiences, (FFF, FLEGT, CbFM…) and knowledge.
