Sandra Cisneros
Sandra Cisneros, an author who is deeply inspired by her Mexican American
heritage. This inspiration is clearly shown throughout every one of her writing
pieces such as Salvador Late or Early and Eleven . Both short stories focus on
adolescents with a mature mindset and adult precision, and each story does a
marvelous job portraying Cisneros constant writing style. Salvador Late or Early is
focusing on a young boy, Salvador, with heavy burdens to carry on his shoulders,
which is unfortunate because he is such a young boy with an old soul. The
responsibilities he has are unimaginable due to the fact they don t pertain to his age.
The short story Eleven is about an eleven year old girl named Rachel, a forthright
character who explains... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Salvador Late or Early includes figurative language all throughout the short story.
For example, Salvador with eyes the color of caterpillar, (Paragraph 1, Line 1) is a
metaphor suggesting metamorphosis and even though he is a caterpillar stuck
inside its cocoon, he will soon become a beautiful, graceful butterfly. This
metaphor gives rise to the artistic voice and thematic meaning because the message
this short story is trying to send is that no matter how worthless one may feel and
if they think that they ll never have enough power to hatch out of their cocoon, in
the end, they will always become the beautiful, graceful butterfly they were all
along. Another example of figurative language in Salvador Late or Early is a
metaphor in paragraph 2: Arturito has dropped the cigar box of crayons, has let go
the hundred little fingers of red, green, yellow, blue, and nub of black sticks that
tumble and spill over and beyond the asphalt puddles... This symbolizes a rainbow
after a storm, and the deeper meaning behind this symbolism is that although
Salvador is caught in the middle of a brutal storm, the sun will soon come out and he
will find a rainbow. One example of figurative language in Eleven is when Rachel
uses similes such as Because the way you grow old is kind of like an onion or like
the rings inside a tree trunk or like my little
Stimulants Against Peds
The Ultimate Price for Glory The sports world is filled with endless competition with
everyone trying to be the absolute best, so is greatness worth risking their own life?
With the constant push from coaches, family members, fans, and even themselves, it
is no wonder that athletes sometimes experiment with performance enhancers. There
are many different types of Performance Enhancing Drugs, and each kind has
different effects on the human body. There are many different categories of
Performance Enhancing Drugs, a few include; Anabolic steroids which unnaturally

An article by the name of The Doping Dilemma , by Michael Shermer gives a table
that illustrates the many side effects that come along with each performance
enhancing drug. For instance, a PED that enhances oxygen transfer will have side
effects that include; blood clots, heart attack, stroke, and a PED that aids in the
build of muscle and bone can cause; liver damage, breast development in men, and
attitude changes (Shermer). Both categories of PED s are only a few of the
different kinds of drugs, this means that this is only a fraction of the side effects that
are related to the use of PED s. On the online article, Adverse Health Consequences
of Performance Enhancing Drugs: An Endocrine Society Scientific Statement , the
authors indicate Users of high doses of AAS may be more susceptible to rage,
antisocial and violent behaviors, and suicidality. Sharing of needles and other
paraphernalia and unprotected sex may increase the risk of infections such as
hepatitis and HIV. The use of PEDs, especially in conjunction with analgesics or

increasing the risk of musculoskeletal injuries. (Pope). The exact truth and not only
physical, but mental health issues that are associated with the abuse of performance

English Settlers Vs Indians Analysis
A huge detriment to the long, rocky process of English colonization in the New
World was conflict with the Indians. Before the English settlers and the Indians first
met on the James River, both already held strong ideas of what to expect. Both were
confident in their abilities to overcome and control the other group, and both
expected to use the other for a trading opportunity. However, the English saw the
Indians as an advanced, highly developed group, while Indians thought the literal
opposite of the foreigners settling onto their land. Inflexible assumptions between
colonists and Indians were one of the main contributors to violent conflict between
the two groups. The colonist s assumptions towards the Indians were at first
respectful; they expected the tribe to be advanced and highly developed. Even though
the colonists knew and respected the power of the Powhatan people, they still
expected to control, bargain with, and convert the natives (Kupperman). Because they
were unknowledgeable of the land and farming, they knew they would have to rely
on the natives for crops in exchange for whatever goods they could supply. Though
many English settlers wanted a peaceful trading relationship,... Show more content on

The only previous contact they had with Europeans was with the Spanish explorers,
who captured Powhatan boys and raised distrust among the tribes (Tayac). Despite
this, the Indians still wanted to set up a trading relationship with English settlers to
obtain manufactured English goods they ve never had access to before. Although the
initial reaction towards English settlers was one of wariness and hostility, the Indians
quickly took pity on the settlers and gave them land and food. Also, the Indians knew
that if the colonists depended on them for resources, they could use this support as a

Essay on Use of DBCP and Relation to Infertility
Use of DBCP and relation to infertility
Dow produced DBCP (1,2 dibromo 3 chloropropane), a soil fumigant, and
nematicide, which was sold under the names the Nemagon and Fumazone until the
late 1970s. US banned DBCP in 1979 after it was linked to human sterility in
California. But, Dow and three other companies continued producing the hazardous
pesticide DBCP for years after it was banned and exported it to developing countries.
Animal testing had revealed that the product caused male sterility in rats and the
companies knew about it at least since the 1960s, but concealed this information.

response to a lawsuit filed by the Attorney General to end Dow s illegal advertising

Acquisition of Union Carbide
The Bhopal Disaster of 1984 was the worst industrial disaster in the history of the
world. It was caused by the accidental release of methyl isocyanate (MIC) from a
Union Carbide India, Limited (UCIL) pesticide plant located in the heart of the city
of Bhopal. UCIL was a joint venture between Union Carbide and a public/private
consortium of Indian investors. The MIC leak killed thousands outright and injured
anywhere from 150,000 to 600,000 others, at least 15,000 of whom died later from
their injuries. The contamination due to the leak is still active and no cleanup has
been done till now.
Despite the involvement of Union Carbide in a criminal case in India, location of the
plant in the heart of the city and the disaster site still not cleaned up, Dow bought
Union Carbide in 2001. The transfer of ownership led to complicating the issue of
cleaning up the plant and its environs of hundreds of tonnes of toxic waste, which has
been left untouched. Environmentalists have warned that the waste is a potential
minefield in the heart of the city, and

The Fight for Gay Rights
63 percent of all surveyed Americans responded in favor of gays when asked if
same sex relationships were morally acceptable, based on a 2017 study (statistica) .
As it is commonly known, gays are people who choose to be in relationships with
members of the same sex. The gay rights movement is the fight in which the
individuals battle for their freedom to advance these relationships whether it is to
marriage or simply so that homophobia does not stand in their way. The gay life style
is seen as morally unacceptable in the eyes of some because of religious or traditional
values (gay rights). Despite the reality that the gay community still copes with
oppression in society, the gay rights movement has made tremendous
accomplishments throughout history, furthering the thinking of the public and
catalyzing awareness of the need for tolerance.
To fully understand how this movement has developed and prospered, it is
important to know the roots of these issues in history. The very first societies to
have dealed with this were the Romans, Greeks, Jews who all had very different
viewpoints on gay rights in the 1500s. The Greeks were not opposed to homosexuality
and dealed with it like it was a natural part of life. This is shown in the way that
Greek art work shows homosexual acts, and Greek writers wrote stories and poems
about it (Oliver 15). Concerning romans, homosexuality was legal in
Energy Sources Of Renewable Energy
Executive Summary
The development of renewable and alternative energy is becoming more and more
necessary as the traditional fossil fuel energy is a non renewable energy and can
cause various environmental problems such as the global warming effect.
However, the challenge today in generating alternative energy is to find a cost
effective way while has the smallest harmful environmental impacts. Developing
bioenergy have the advantage of reducing greenhouse gas emission while creating
great economic values.
Introduction
Biomass energy is considered as one of the renewable energies in the latest alternative
energy sources development. According to the renewable energyconsumption source
data Table. I from U.S energy information administration, biomass energy is the
largest source of renewable energies and the total share of biomass energy among all
of the five alternative energies is approximately 50%. Although there is a 2.3%
decrement of total consumption of biomass energy from 2014 to 2015 due to the
decrease of wood consumption, there s still a large potential for the bioenergy
technology growth.
Table I. Total consumption source of renewable energy. Unit: Trillion btu [1]
Biomass refers to the biodegradable wastes and non fossilized organic materials
originating from plants, animals and micro organisms derived from biological
sources. [2] Currently, research in biomass energies can be divided into two major

Project Management And The Major Areas Of Projects
Management
Before we discuss about the Project Management and the major areas of project
management, let see actually what is a project? A project is defined as a
temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result
(Schwalbe, 2014). Projects involve different operations like the project is
terminated when the scope and objective of the project are met. According to an IT
project or any kind of project it involves number of persons or a team or an
individual in order to complete the mission. A project can be of different types for
example developing a mobile application, implementing a new system,
implementation of database for some institution purpose and so on. For
implementing or designing a project it involves various technologies like cloud
computing, internet and many more the usage of technologies depends upon the
specifications of an organization. According to the prescribed text book, we have
some attributes which are utilized for defining a project. Let us have a brief look
about these attributes: Each and every project which is being implemented in the
current world is unique and has an inimitable purpose. The projects which are done
by the organizations have a distinct objective. Every project has a deadline it does
not keep on going without an end. A project usually takes a month or half a year or a
year to complete but not more than that. A project involves modifications,
upgradation in middle of the flow of the project. Once of the
Summary Of The Novel Collapse By Jared Diamond
Collapse, a novel by Jared Diamond, discusses current and future problems on Earth
to warn readers of what is happening around them. Diamond goes into detail about
specific societies, and then analyzes its meaning in the final chapter. Using the title
The World as a Polder, he examines twelve major issues that are expected to
worsen in the future. These issues include deforestation, overfishing, loss of
diversity of species, loss of soil, growth of the human population, and the effect of
more people. The limit on energy, freshwater, and sunlight is also mentioned, as
well as the challenges brought up by toxic chemicals, alien species, and
atmospheric gases. These environmental challenges are so hard to overcome
because different people do not want to spend money and time fixing the same
dilemmas. A common belief is that these problems are not going to matter anytime
soon, so we have no reason to care. However, this is incorrect. We need to act now in
order to move past... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the theory that these disasters are not going to become a reality anytime
soon is putting a roadblock on this. Despite Diamond s research, society pictures a
year such as 2037 to be unreal. Diamond himself pictured it this way, but suddenly
realized, It s not an imaginary year! (523). Along with this statement, Diamond
says, ...rises in living standards in Third World countries whose inhabitants see and
covet First World lifestyles; and immigration, both legal and illegal, of individual
Third World inhabitants into the First World, driven by political, economic, and
social problems at home (505). This poses a problem to the current First World
citizens, because it can lower their living standards as well as creating a larger
carbon footprint, less food and water, and more crowded cities. The only way to
solve this is with a long term solution, which costs much more than a short term

to invent things, she had black hair with a purple ribbon and would put up her hair
when she was going to invent something. Klaus was the middle child and loved to
read and was very intelligent he wore glasses and had black hair. Sunny was a baby
like most babies and loved to chew on things she wore a yellow ribbon on the little
piece of hair that she had. Violet and the other two were going to his house and
met Justice Strauss a lovely and nice judge who lived next door to Count Olafs
house. Count Olaf said that he loved kids but the only reason he wanted to care for

The Knowledge That The Laputians Possess May
The knowledge that the Laputians possess may also reflect some symbolism
towards the saying of ignorance is bliss. If one does not know about something,
they tend to not worry about, but the Laputians know so much with their abstract
theories of math and science that they are under continual disquietudes (Swift
2577). The knowledge they have also makes it very apparent that they never take
the time to enjoy themselves as they fear the end of Earth constantly and when
they meet an acquaintance in the morning, the first question is about the sun s
health...and what hopes they have to avoid the stroke of the approaching comet
(Swift 2577 78). They worry so much that their conversations are their worries
which is very sad. Another sad thing is the men of Laputa do not even spend their
time with their wives which makes it all the more easy for affairs to arise. The
women of Laputa are free to do as they please, but they are unable to leave the
island as the people of quality have found by frequent experience, how hard it is to
persuade their women to return from below (Swift 2578). As unfaithful as they are,
the women still attempt to leave. It almost seems like the knowledge the Laputians
have is so powerful that it was able to make their wives unfaithful. The
impracticalness of the Laputians become more evident with Gulliver s observations
and discoveries. Gulliver is given tutors by the Laputian King to teach him their
language; however, he finds that the words he
Why Harry Potter Should Be Banned
Did you know that the Harry Potter series has been translated into 68 different
languages and has sold over 400 million copies worldwide? Harry Potter has
inspired a new generation of readers. Harry Potter is banned in so many schools, but
it still has changed our culture. The first Harry Potter was published in 1997, the rest
of the books were published between then and 2007. Harry Potteris about a boy who
a powerful wizard named Voldemort wanted to kill but instead of killing Harry he
killed Harry s parents. Harry went and lived with his nasty aunt and uncle until he
was 11. When he was 11 he got a letter from HogwartsSchool of Witchcraftand

In the bible it says that wizards, devils and demons exist and are powerful and
dangerous. People have a fear that any books with good witches, wizards and good
magic will lead people to take the bible s teachings lightly and may convince them
to become witches. Another reason that Harry Potter is banned is that it sets
unsatisfactory examples for kids reading the book by Harry and his friends disobey,
lie and break rules. People think that kids reading the books will think they can get
away with things that they normally would not get away with. A third reason that
Harry Potter is banned is it is too eerie and dark. The battles that the characters are
required to go through and how the characters die is too

A Critique of The Times Online Website
This report gives a critique of The Times Online website using a number of design
aspects which include searchability, Navigation, usability, design, interactivity and
content. The main problems identified in the website include a mixture of main
content with advertisement content, too long pages and some of the images
appearing to be quite blurred. The recommendations for redesign include separating
advertisement content from the main content by placing it on top of the page just
before the logo, shortening the pages and using hyperlinks to get to various sections
and using high resolution images on the site.

This creates the perception of too much information on a single page which is not
appealing to users. The designers should have adopted shorter pages and then use
hyperlinks to move to the other sections of the page.
The times Online effectively fulfills its mandate of informing readers because finding
information in this site is generally very simple.
Design
The designers of the website adopted a very simple layout. However, the simplicity
of the layout did not compromise the effectiveness of the site. The white
background color coupled with the consistent usage of color gives the website a
professional look. The logo which is placed on the top left corner of the site has
been made in a professional and does not cause a distraction from the content on the
page.
The location of the logo is consistently placed at the corner at the top left side of
every page. This greatly improves the consistency of the entire site. An advertisement
section is located above the logo. This might distract the content on the pages because
it displays something different from the other sections of the page. However, this
advertisement content has been placed on top of the logo. This makes it quite hard to
notice this advertisement content because it is placed separate from the content of
the main page.
The homepage on the website has been divided into 2 separate columns. This has
separated the information on the website. The column on the left

Sarcasm In Sarcasm
ABSTRACT
Sarcasm is a type of sentiment where people express their negative feelings using
positive or intensified positive words in the text. It is a kind of sentiment which acts
as an interfering factor in any text that can flip the polarity. While speaking, people
often uses heavy tonal stress and certain gestural clues like rolling of the eyes, hand
movement, etc. to reveal sarcasm. In the textual data, gestural clues are missing,
making sarcasm detection very difficult for an average human. Due to these
challenges, researchers show interest in sarcasm detection of social media. The www

sentiment has recently appeared 15 years or less, the importance of sarcasm

be seen as a turning point in for building codes and building code enforcement. As a
result of the fire, the NIST produced a 250 page report containing ten
recommendations to increase the safety of buildings, specifically relating to high
density assembly occupancies. Unfortunately, advancements in buildingcodes and
their application typically come from disaster rather than from community
involvement in a decision making process. History is littered with cause and effect

requirements. These... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instead, it needs to primarily focus on a different way of doing things. One prime
example of this is a growing industry we call tiny houses. This community wishes to
build mostly code compliant structures in a garage or shop, then deliver them to site
for installation and use by the final owner. To date, these structures are illegal,
simply because our codebooks do not say they are legal. The result has been an
underground community that has disengaged from the discussion and produces these
houses anyway. Perhaps they feel that their voices have not been heard or they have
been heard and have been ignored. A properly functioning democratic code adoption
process would actively engage this community and incorporate their interests into the
model code. With the proper democratic capacity, these groups can approach their
local representative and approach the code council with a uniform voice, combined
with scientific analysis of safety and livability measures, to get codes adopted that
would allow them to legally comply with the code requirements. The process of
getting diverse construction methods adopted and implemented will do wonders to
build leadership capacity within this

I was only 6 years old at the time when the 9/11 happened, and I didn t find out until
a few weeks later when my parents showed me the video. I have never seen
anything like that but in movies, so the first thought that came up in my mind when
I saw the video was what movie is that. My parents tried to explain what was
happening, but at the time, I couldn t process what had happened or really

that the United States encounter the largest terrorist attack in history, and the
reason why the United States is involved in war with Afghanistan. United States

The future of VOIP could also be formed by a lot of politics. As we ve seen, the
various approaches of the EU and therefore the U.S. haven t made any form of
neutral zone during which problems with VOIP readying will be adjudged solely
on their technical deserves. In the U.S., the history of linking social and economic
policies to a network centric read of the globe has caused inevitable confusion as
services become more and more application centric. And up to date steps to
accommodate public policy goals to IP voice services haven t mainly addressed the
massive queries of regulative classification. The implementation of forward looking,
technologically neutral classifications in the European Union has not made the
applying of regulatory discretion immune from political support by dominant carriers.
First, through international consultation. Europe and also the U. S. (much less the
remainder of the planet, as well as the nations of Asia that lead the world in
broadband deployment) need not adopt identical rules. They will leave room for
experimentation. For example, the approach to emergency services need not be
identical perhaps there is a demand for governmental mandate, perhaps for voluntary
(but ubiquitous) business action, perhaps just for government mandated shopper

likely need harmonization, as VOIP services move freely across borders. Second, by

Glaucoma Is A Progressive Form Of Optic Neuropathy
Glaucoma is a progressive form of optic neuropathy that is characterised by
structural changes to the optic nerve head (ONH) and corresponding patterns of
functional visual field (VF) loss. It is a major cause of irreversible blindness in the
world.
Currently, the pathogenesis responsible for glaucoma is not well understood. It has
been suggested that local ischemia or mechanical damage from a raised intraocular
pressure (IOP) resulting in retinal ganglion cell (RGC) loss may have a role in its
aetiology. The treatment for glaucoma aims to reduce IOP through therapeutic or
surgical means to reduce glaucomatous progression. The first line of treatment
involves topical therapy such as eye drops. There are many classes of anti glaucoma
drops with prostaglandin analogues being the most potent ocular hypotensive with a
good safety profile.
Before initiating treatment, it is important to consider factors such as the risk of
progression and the patient s suitability to the particular therapy chosen. Once
treatment has been initiated, patients must be reviewed regularly to assess the
efficacy of the treatment, monitor for adverse reactions, confirm compliance, and to
identify signs of progression.
Glaucoma is a form of progressive optic neuropathy that has clinically visible
structural damage at the ONH and RNFL that correlates to a functional VF deficit1 4.
These glaucomatous structural changes include thinning or notching of the NRR,
bayonetting of vessels, loss of RNFL,
Taking a Look at Bacterial Gastroenteritis
1.The diagnosis is bacterial gastroenteritis, commonly known as food poisoning or the
stomach flu . Gastroenteritis is inflammation and swelling of the gastrointestinal
track. Gastroenteritis can usually caused by ingesting food contaminated with some
bacteria. Furthermore, some common causes of gastroenteritis include, shigella
infection, cholera, and salmonella infection. There are many symptoms of
gastroenteritis, including diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain and vomiting (Guerrant,
Bobak, 1991). In addition, vomiting and diarrhea can cause dehydration, and
children are likely to get dehydrated more quickly. Thus, it is crucial to look for the
signs of dehydration, such as dry mouth, dry skin and decreased urine output. The
doctor initiates the diagnosis by performing a abdominal or rectal examination in
order to eliminate the possibilities of pelvic abscesses and inflammatory bowel
disease (Guerrant, Bobak, 1991). In addition, the doctor uses a stool culture to
determine what bacteriaare responsible for causing the gastroenteritis (Guerrant,
Bobak, 1991).
2.The organism responsible for this disease is a strain of E.coli called E.coli
0157:H7. E.coli is a gram negative rod that inhabit the human gastrointestinal track
and mostly harmless. However, the strain 0157 can produce powerful toxins that
can lead to severe cases of food poisoning (Gould, 2010). The bacteria were first
identified as a cause of foodborne illness in 1982 when an outbreak of

В· Authorization, Access Controls
Authorization is the specification of a set of rules that specify who has which type of
access to what information. Authorization policies therefore govern the disclosure
and modification of information. Access controls are
3 procedures that are designed to control authorizations. They are responsible to limit
access to stored data to authorized users only.
В· Integrity, Consistency
An integrity policy states a set of rules (i. e. semantic integrity constraints) that define
the correct states of the database during database operation and therefore can protect
against malicious or accidental modification of information. Closely related issues to
integrity and consistency are concurrency control and recovery. Concurrency control
policies protect the integrity of the database in the presence of concurrent
transactions. If these transactions do not terminate normally due to system crashes or
security violations recovery techniques are used to reconstruct correct or valid
database states.
В· Auditing
The requirement to keep records of all security relevant actions issued by a user is
called auditing. Resulting audit records are the basis for further reviews and
examinations in order to test the adequacy of system controls and to recommend any
changes in the security policy.
In this Chapter such a broad perspective of database security is not taken.
Instead, main focus is directed towards aspects related to
Catcher In The Rye Essay Outline
The Catcher in the Rye is a book that s written by J.D. Salinger and narrated by a
sixteen years old teenager named Holden Caulfield. At the beginning, Holden has
just been kicked out of Pencey Prep because he s failing his classes, and it s not the
first time or first school. He went to say goodbye to his teacher, Mr. Spencer. Then,
he tells us about his brother Allie and how he died, and this is the reason behind
Holden s problems. Holden s roommate is dating a girl Holden knows, Jane

The Mad Cow Disease Epidemic
Twenty years after the wind down of the infamous Mad Cow Disease epidemic and
thirty years following its first appearance in British cattle, Bovine Spongiform
Encephalopathy continues to impact thousands. In 1996, it was discovered that
bovine spongiform encephalopathy could be transmitted to humans in the form of
Variant Creutzfeldt Jakob disease (vCJD), most commonly through the ingestion of
beef contaminated with BSE. Of the roughly 229 reported cases of vCJD, it s
believed that at least 3 cases contracted the fatal neurodegenerative disease through
blood transfusions. In an effort to protect the U.S. blood supply, the FDA has banned
blood donation from any person that had spent more than six months in the UK
between 1980 and 1997.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While dysfunction of prion proteins remains the most widely accepted etiology of
BSE, the USDA suggests there may be two other possible theories that could better
explain the manifestation of BSE: the virino theory and the virus theory. However,
both theories pale in comparison to the robust evidence in support of the prions
theory. A major argument that works against both the virino theory and virus theory
is that throughout several studies, the use of various treatments known to damage or
inhibit nucleic acids have had no effect on the transmissibility of BSE. Interestingly,
prion proteins lack nucleic acids making them an excellent candidate as the infectious
agent responsible for the development of bovine spongiform encephalopathy.
Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy is characterized by an unusually long
incubation period ranging from 2 8 years. During the incubation period, an infected
animal may not show any clinical signs suggesting it is in anyway unhealthy. This
is a major reason several countries placed precautionary bans on blood donors.
Experts believe it is entirely possible that a person could have contracted the
infectious disease during the BSE outbreak and could be carrying the disease
through an incubation period possibly extending beyond the suggested 2 8 year span
without showing any clinical signs. Since no diagnostic test currently exists to test a
person for vCJD while they are living, there is
Accounting Theory
Assignment Task
The four largest Australian Banks have faced considerable pressure from the
community and the government in recent times. This pressure has arisen due to their
interest rate increases in association with their high reported earnings. As accountants,
we are responsible for preparing financial statements and calculating the profit
figures.
In your opinion, do you think the big banks are managing their reported earnings to
show lesser profits than what they are actually earning (i.e. using earnings
management techniques)? You are required, and must, read and incorporate
academic journal articles and other relevant materials to justify your viewpoint.

Accounting can be broadly defined as the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In order to do so, it is necessary to understand and define earnings Management.
Definition of Earnings Management
Healy and Wahlen (1999) define earnings management as:
Earnings management occurs when managers use judgement in financial reporting
and in structuring transactions to alter financial reports to either mislead some
stakeholders about the underlying economic performance of the company or to
influence contractual outcomes that depend on reported accounting numbers.
Another definition is given by Fields et al. (2001) who state that:
Earnings management occurs when managers exercise their discretion over
accounting numbers with or without restrictions. Such discretion can be either firm
value maximizing or opportunistic .
The above definitions highlight the point that managerial intent is a criterion for
earnings management (Spohr 2005). Several academic literatures seek to point out
the activities which can be considered to be earnings management. However, as the
definition of earnings management does not rely on any one item of the income
statement, it does not need to be directly connected to reported earnings. Its impact is
through accounting numbers and may also be directed at financial ratios as opposed
to earnings (Schipper 1989). Dechow and Skinner (2000) have classified earnings
management as follows:

in the deep forests in this town. I study these creatures for a living, as it is my day

Hello. Are you lost? What s wrong, are you ok? I spoke to it as the creature as the

A are you a monster? You look s s scary. It said as it was too frightened to even look

It was then that I knew I became fascinated with the tiny, shadow creature. I never

quite sometime, I then trip over from a small

soulless eyes and his hunched over back gave him a sense of intimidation. It
The Impact Of Technology On Socialization
At the beginning of Sunday morning, I reached for my phone for the last time to
silence my alarm that woke me up for church. My dependence on my phone and
other forms of technology has grown significantly since I joined online school. For
most of the day, it remains my only form of communication with the outside world
as I attend school from my living room. Because of this, I choose to attempt to do
the twenty four hours of technology free on Sunday. I would be with my family for
most of the day and normally wouldn t use most electronics for the time period any
way. However, my confidence in abstaining from my phone weakened shortly after as
I felt the urge to Snapchat my close friends. The increase in technology has changed

The values regarding how a good friend should act have dramatically changed to
someone that is always available and ready to talk. Ergo, because of the shift in
technology, socialization now includes a new set of rules on how to behave
regarding technology. By foregoing my electronics, I was breaking the more
recent values instilled by technological socialization. This made Sunday incredibly
difficult as I would be unaware if any of my close friends were in trouble. In
addition, since all of our plans are created through our group text, I was unaware
my friends had planned to hangout on Sunday night. I even went as far as to have
my best friend manage my snapchat for the day in order to ensure my snap streaks
were kept. I felt an immense pressure exerted by the social rules of technology to
break from the project and check my phone. However, I understood the goal was
for one day and it wasn t very long in actuality so I managed to not look at it. The
other forms of technology weren t as hard for me to avoid as they didn t carry the
same social rule set as my social media. Thus, although Sunday felt like I was
breaking a rule, I reluctantly followed the rule of the project and didn t use any
technology for the day. In conclusion, technology has changed socialization to
include values and rules based on technology. This negatively impacted my

I ve always excelled with leaders that have reached out to me. Leaders that are

people in the right direction. A quote that I thought would be good to share you all

From this quote, you figure out that leaders weren t born as leaders; they worked
hard to get to the level where they are now. Even though they may learn aspects on

If a leader is motivating and pushing his or her followers to accomplish the assigned
mission, this part of the leader is good, however, if the leader doesn t even attempt to
join in and help the team, that implies bad leadership. It implies bad leadership
because, motivating someone isn t hard to do. A leader goes above and beyond
what is expected of him or her. Therefore, if a leader doesn t want to help, this is a
trait that a leader SHOULD NOT possess. A leader should be willing to help his or
her followers because it shows respect to the team because once in their life, the
leader was a follower as well. Is following a choice, or an unconscious want? It is
actually both, however it differs from situation to situation. For example, in the
story Herd Mentality? The Freakonomics of Boarding a Bus, the narrator said that
most people gravitate to point A (Point A is the bus stop closest to the narrator s
apartment). There is also an alternative point that people could go to, point B (Point
B is the bus that is a block west from the first bus, point A). The narrator also
mentions that most people don t even think about the existence of point B nor the
amount of people that would be using the transportation from it. This is an example
of a follower going along the lines of an unconscious want or also known as peer
The Benefits of Social Security
Social security is any government system that provides monetary assistance to
people with an inadequate or no income. The United States government program
was established in 1935. Social security is important in the U.S. because it lifts 20
million people out of poverty. Social security has changed drastically in the past few
years of our society. Today, 37 million people get social security
benefits of more than
$15 billion a month.
One way of getting a social security is to gain employment. The law requires every
employer to give social security counterparts for their employees, is they qualify.
There are proven benefits of having a Social Security membership. It aids in
protection during retirement age, which is often a time of lowered income and
benefits. Social Security also helps during cases of permanent or temporary
disability. In case of death of the principal member, burial assistance will be
tendered for the grieving family. When loss of the principal member occurs,
children aging from 18 and below will get subsidy from the government for their
educational needs and sustenance. The living spouse will also receive monthly
pensions. Furthermore, in cases of emergencies like hospitalization due to sickness
or accidents, the policy is applicable. If you are also in dire need of additional
amount because of poverty it can help too.
More and more talk recently about the fact that Social Security is on the fast decline
has left many people, especially those around the

A variety of assistive listening systems, or hearing assistive technology, can help
students who are deaf or hard of hearing. According to the National Association for
the Deaf, assistive listening systems can be used to enhance the effectiveness of

technology and a device for capturing and bringing the sound to the ear.
The specific transmission technology used in the system is typically what contrasts
one type of assistive listening system from another. Information, moods, emotions:

Aristotle s Views On Political Philosophy
Along with his teacher, Plato, Aristotle is generally regarded as one of the most
influential ancient thinkers, not just in political philosophy, but across a range of
fields. In the Nicomachean Ethics Aristotle describes his account of political science
as the most authoritative of sciences. It pronounces how political science that of the
city or state, and which science fall under its authority. However, discussions in
political philosophyhas developed further since Aristotleand therefore it is
questionable as to whether they continue to remain significant. Throughout the
following then, I will assess whether Aristotelian political philosophy is still relevant
today.
One of the three main themes of Aristotle s political theory is his naturalistic account
of the state. According to Aristotle it exists as a natural phenomenon. Whether
Aristotle uses the term nature in Politics in the same way as he does when describing
his metaphysics or his philosophy of nature is unclear. In these nature is normally
referred to as an inner principle of change and being at rest . To give an example of
this a seed would be natural as it has its source of motion within itself, it grows into a
plant by itself. A house on the other hand is not natural as the source of its motion is
external; the house is a result of the relevant craftsmanship from humans.
There appear to be two senses in which Aristotle believes the polis to be natural. All
associations are formed with the aim to
Disadvantages Of Low Quality
Everyone has had experiences of low quality when overseeing business affiliations.
These experiences may incorporate a bearer that has lost an explorer s stuff,
clothing that has left articles of clothing wrinkled or recolor, poor course offerings

experience of low quality is exacerbated when specialists of the association either are
not empowered to right quality lacks or don t give off an impression of being willing

In this manner various centered firms unendingly grow their quality benchmarks.

Throughout My Last Duchess Browning illustrates the Duke s obsession with
controlling the people around him; both past and present. One way the Duke exerts

Essay on The Iliad
The Iliad
The work of Homer was very important to the Greek Civilization; it gave the Greek
a structure of personality to follow. It is assure that The Iliad s roots reach far back
before Homer s time. Homer focused several characteristics of how their ancestors
behaved and such behavior was to be passed on to the new generations. In The Iliad,
Homer emphasized the role of the gods in the daily events, and how every
happening was based of the desires of the gods. Homer also focused on the warrior
characteristics, not just of the Argives, but also of the Trojans and how they were
ought to be brave, courageous and show fearlessness in the face of the enemy.
Homer lived during the Greek Iron Age, but The Iliad took place during the ... Show

Insinuating that they would have never fought if a god had not gotten involved. As
the question is answered, Apollo the son of Zeus and Leto. Incensed at the king he
swept a fatal plague through the army men were dying and all because Agamemnon
spurned Apollo s priest (Book 1, line 10 12). Here the argument is that because of
one king, Agamemnon (king of Mycenae, Achaeans) fault towards Apollo s priest
caused two civilizations to war against each other. That is in the very beginning of
the poem, suggesting of more divine intervention expected through the text. Most of
the people in the story seem to believe that the gods predetermined most of their
actions. But the will of Zeus will always overpower the will of men, (Book 16, line
805). This is a small constant reference that Homer made throughout the text
pertaining to the ability the gods having control over mortal lives, actions, and
consequences.
The gods were believed to toy with human life, as it was for their pleasure to see
destruction or the complete opposite. In Book 4, Zeus angrily says to Hera
Whenever I am bent on tearing down some city filled with men you love to please
myself never attempt to thwart my fury... (Book 4, line 47 49). It is clear here that
Zeus, supreme god and king of Olympus, states that for enjoyment he is willing to
destroy cities and killed people. There is nothing anyone could do in such situation,
because Zeus
Numerical Weather Prediction Essay
People predict weather differently; barometer, now casting and observing weather
conditions by looking at the sky are just some of methods or examples that can be
used to predict the future weather. In this essay Numerical Weather Prediction will be
described using the primitive equations, and then the difference between the short
term and climate forecasts will be distinguished.
Numerical Weather Predictionmodel uses the primitive equations to predict future
weather based on the present weather conditions.
There are five different primitive equations that are being used to predict the weather,
Wind forecast equation, it is the equation of motion that explains the movement of air
masses in the atmosphere, the continuity equation deals with the rising of warm, wet
air and sinking of cold dry air as the air columns shrinks and stretches, and then
according to Tyson Preston Whyte(2000:342) the temperature forecast equation helps
the climatologists and meteorologists to see that, there is local changes in
temperature because of the horizontal advection of temperature and there is also
changes in distribution of heat when the adiabatic latent heat is added to the earth
surface and the atmosphere, moisture forecast equation shows that when

Diagnostic calculations give the better understanding, of the relation between
pressure, density and temperature, and the horizontal velocity is never included in
these calculations. In contrary to diagnostic calculations the prognostic calculations
can easily be divide into two stages, a purely hydrodynamics which determines the
motion of air particles in the atmosphere and thermodynamics which is used to reach
conclusion about changes that occur at different stages of the prediction of the
weather, and the vertical velocity is never included in these prognostic
The Themes Of Everyman
Everyman is a morality play that was written around the 15th century. The
playwright of this morality play is not known till this day. Everyman refers to a
character that represents every human being living on earth, living their lives the
way they want to, enjoying the pleasures of life and neglecting the laws of God and
God himself. Through death, God summons Everyman to come before him and
account for the way he has lived his life. That to him becomes a terrifying journey to
undertake. In this play characters are personified because they are in fact non living
things but materialistic objects. In the form of an essay, I will discuss in detail the
vital aspects of Everyman the play such as Setting, Protagonist, Major conflict, rising
action, climax, falling action, themes, motifs, symbols and foreshadowing.
THE ASPECTS
SETTING (Time and Place)
The play was written around the 1400 s in the 15th century and the writer was
possibly motivated by his/her religion to write such a morality play. According to
Michael (2010: 1) The action begins in heaven when God sends Death to summon the
main character, Everyman. Thereafter, the action takes place on earth. It is often
believed that God lives in heavenly realms so therefore the place in which the first ...

The main theme in Everyman is that people will have to account for everything
they have done while still alive. In sub themes, there are negative and positive
themes. The positive themes comprise of Good deeds, Confession and Knowledge,
and the negative themes comprise of lusts, greediness and wild living. Everyman
becomes the victim of the negative themes and at his death bed realises that his
priorities should have also focused on the positive aspects of life which are not as
fleeting as the negative. What is often emphasised in Everyman is ignorance and
religion. The themes in Everyman appear in different forms. Some are clear and

Narnia and the Seven Deadly Sins by Dr. Don W. King Essay
Narnia and the Seven Deadly Sins by Dr. Don W. King
Dr. Don W. King wrote Narnia and the Seven Deadly Sins, an article stating that
each of the seven stories of Narnia represent one of the seven deadly sins. In his
article, King stated that the novel The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe could
easily be found to represent the sin gluttony. Many quotes from the text can be used
to show that all or most of the seven deadly sins can be directly represented as well.
The first and most clearly represented sin is gluttony. Early in the text, Edmund finds
himself with an uncontrollable desire for Turkish Delight. This example of gluttony
is represented many times in the text. On page 38, Edmund s desire takes control of
him when he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Soon his thirst for Turkish Delight is accompanied equally by his thoughts of
power. With the White Witch s promise of princehood, Edmund s thoughts become
even more clouded than before. Edmund demonstrates his greed for sole power on
page 41 when he says, There s nothing special about them #8230;I could always
bring them some other time . Them being, his brother and sisters of whom his
wishes to share none of his newly promised treasures. Edmund goes on and on
reaching for any possible excuse to exclude Peter, Susan, and Lucy from his
involvement with the White Witch. Controlled by his greed for power and his lust
for Turkish Delight, Edmund becomes distance and unfocused. Edmund s lust is
demonstrated one more time in the text when he leaves in the night to go to the
witch, in turn betraying he group. On page 91 Mr. Beaver says, He s gone to her to
the White Witch. He has betrayed us all. In this quote he refers to Edmund, and
Edmund has betrayed them all because of his lust. Overtime his lust has grown strong
for the taste of the wonderful Turkish Delight and has deluded his judgment about the
intentions of the White Witch. Another sin that can be found represented in the book
is pride, though not as prominently demonstrated as greed, lust, or gluttony. At one
point in the story Edmund seems to be too proud to admit he has been wrong. Lucy

Doping And Performance Enhancing Drugs
On January 17, 2013, Lance Armstrong admitted to doping during his professional
cycle careers. He joins other great names; such as Tyson Gay, Mark McGwire, Barry
Bonds, and Alex Rodriguez; all great athletes who have had their reputations
tarnished by using performance enhancing drugs (sometimes shortened to PEDs). In
his interview with Opera Winfrey, Armstrong stated that I didn t view [doping] [as
cheating]. I viewed it as a level playing field (Lance). With this statement, Armstrong
is declaring that many professional cyclists and other professional athletes engage in
illegal doping in order to improve their performances. These drugs can be useful for
their ability to decrease recovery time, allowing athletes to train more intensely.
Currently, most forms of performance enhancing drugs are banned from use in
professional sports(caffeine is a common legal substance). However, it is well
known that performance enhancing drugs are used by athletes in a wide variety of
sports at a variety of levels. Since, according to Armstrong, most athletes are using
these drugs, a new approach needs to be implemented to deal with performance
enhancing drugs. One possible solution is to just allow the use of performance
enhancing drugs.
This issue has become a catalyst for fierce debate on whether or not performance
enhancing drugs should be allowed in professional sports. Those opposed to the
legalization of performance enhancing drugs argue that these drugs cause harm to
athletes,
The Outcome Of Two Major Railroad Strikes
Identify and describe the outcome of two major Railroad Strikes. The two major
Railroad Strikes were the Great Railroad Strike of 1877 and Railroad Shop
workers Strike of 1922. The Great Railroad Strike of 1877, was due to workers not
being happy about the pay cuts that were being made by their employer so often.
Northern Railroads began cutting salaries and wages. Because of various railroads
cutting wages by 10% back to back, workers were not willing to continue working
under those conditions. Not only were the wages of the workers being cut, the
amount work of work given to the employees increased and the employer did not
hire additional workers. This then caused railroad employees to respond by taking
control of the rail yard switches, and blocking movement of trains. Throughout
various cities such as Baltimore, Pittsburg, St. Louise, and Chicago, Violent acts
began to occur. Many people died throughout the cities. The strike cause the
country s commerce to become paralyzed and pushed governors in different states
to utilize militia members to reopen rail traffic. This action also helped set the
stage for violence that would occur later in the 1880s and 1890s. The Railroad
Shop Workers Strike of 1922 affected everyone in the country. This strike occurred
because of the pay cut of seven cents to the wages of the railroad workers.
Approximately 400,000 rail shop workers from various unions were on strike
because the cut was announced by the railroad labor board. When

One of the themes that influenced many artists in the past is standing up for your
rights. V for Vendetta (2005) and Bob Marley s Get Up, Stand Up (1973) has been
chosen because the author supports these works fit into the social context of Marxism.
This essay traverses through Karl Marx s history and his pioneering works on
Marxism. Marxism is then related to the film V for Vendetta and Bob Marley s
track Get Up, Stand Up , and how both of them are Marxist approaches to inculcate in
the society.
From the outset, Marxism will be examined in terms of the historical aspect and
materialistic ideology. Moreover, the study will look at how these elements were
manipulated by the powers that be. There follows a short synopsis of the film V for
Vendetta and an analysis of specific scenes that relate to the Marxist theory.
Subsequently, the discussion will focus on Marley s influence on Jamaican politics
and consequently an analysis on how Marley s Get Up Stand Up (1973)

advantages and disadvantages. Amazon web services (AWS) and brief understanding
of it fundamental resources like EC2 instances, loadbancers, dynamo DB, VPC and
many more of its user interactive services.
Introduction:
We live in a digital world where everything is internet and server based applications
to make our lives easy. There is a drastic development of technology from time to
time where we have travelled from typical data server with one application on a
server to several shared applications in a single server. Increase of redundancy by
making data and applications highly available to help disaster recovery. AWS
provides features of modern data center with a GUI to establish different applications.
Data center bridging:
Data center bridging is noting but connection between different resources of a data
center like storage, servers etc. over Ethernet. Bridge is datalink layer device
Datacenter Ethernet: Data center Ethernet has got no limit of distance, it has

Introduction. As Management Is Concerned About Gaining
Introduction
As management is concerned about gaining profitability, employee relation,
stakeholder interactions, and leadership and so on, business and management
research is therefore derived from social science disciplines embedded in sociology,
psychology, anthology and economics (Bryman Bell, 2015). Also, management
research can be regarded as applied research. According to Bryman and Bell (2015),
it helps readers with choosing between solutions and carrying out practices.
To carry out management research, methods which refers to specific techniques for
collecting and analysing data and particularly methodology which means the reason
for doing research and design process of selecting methods are crucial considerations

Firstly, positivist believes that knowledge is from understanding of social phenomena
by applying scientific measurements (Stokes, 2011). Positivist also supports that
knowledge is form the senses that perceived from outside (Bryman Bell, 2015).
Interpretivist, on the other hand, believes that knowledge is from the mind of people,
and it seeks to understand subjective meaning by interpreting sense making (Stokes,
2011 pp75).
Axiology means the concerned view of researchers towards values in research
(Saunders et al., 2012). The authors cited Heron (1996) that research values provide
the justifications and motivation of research activities, therefore it is worth doing the
research. The collection between ontology, epistemology and axiology mades
paradigm.
Paradigms is literally a model for management research and knowledge with
explanations of how it can be produced. Stokes (2011) concluded paradigm as the
system built by diverse beliefs and values (pp110), it can also be viewed as
approaches to conceptualising management knowledge (Bryman Bell, 2015). In light
of the interrelation of the three philosophy foundations mentioned above, diverse
paradigms acting as various world views are therefore set up accordingly. Burrel and
Morgan (1979) stated that different management paradigms means different ways of
researching and different research fields, and the paradigm categorisations developed
by them showed four
The Common Era Fransisco Goya
In 1814 of the common era Fransisco Goya painted The Third of May, 1808. This
painting shows us the horrors that happened that day in Madrid when hundreds of
Spaniards rebelled the French were sent in to slaughter them. All but one of the
Spaniards in this painting are cowering over to hide from the death that awaits them
The one man who s not cowering is standing there with open arms ready to embrace
the sacrifice he s making for his country. Around 1599 1600 of the common era
Caravaggio painted The Calling of Matthew. This painting is of the tax collector
Matthew being called upon by Christ. More specifically Matthew is sitting with his
fellow tax collectors counting the money collected from the day.
When looking at these works they both give me a strange feeling. Goya s painting
is more depressing than anything, but it almost makes me feel proud of the man
in the center as he displays true heroism. The soldiers are comical to me as all I
can think about upon looking at them is the Winki Guard from the Wizard of Oz.
The long coats and the tall fuzzy hats resemble those from the movie. Caravaggio s
painting is mysterious in the regard that the shadows conceal the men looking and
pointing toward Matthew. To add to it everyone around the table is looking at them
quite concerned and confused. Overall this painting doesn t really appeal to me in
any regard. However, I can appreciate the shadow work in both paintings.
Debatably the most visually striking aspect of both of these

  • 2. Sandra Cisneros Sandra Cisneros, an author who is deeply inspired by her Mexican American heritage. This inspiration is clearly shown throughout every one of her writing pieces such as Salvador Late or Early and Eleven . Both short stories focus on adolescents with a mature mindset and adult precision, and each story does a marvelous job portraying Cisneros constant writing style. Salvador Late or Early is focusing on a young boy, Salvador, with heavy burdens to carry on his shoulders, which is unfortunate because he is such a young boy with an old soul. The responsibilities he has are unimaginable due to the fact they don t pertain to his age. The short story Eleven is about an eleven year old girl named Rachel, a forthright character who explains... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Salvador Late or Early includes figurative language all throughout the short story. For example, Salvador with eyes the color of caterpillar, (Paragraph 1, Line 1) is a metaphor suggesting metamorphosis and even though he is a caterpillar stuck inside its cocoon, he will soon become a beautiful, graceful butterfly. This metaphor gives rise to the artistic voice and thematic meaning because the message this short story is trying to send is that no matter how worthless one may feel and if they think that they ll never have enough power to hatch out of their cocoon, in the end, they will always become the beautiful, graceful butterfly they were all along. Another example of figurative language in Salvador Late or Early is a metaphor in paragraph 2: Arturito has dropped the cigar box of crayons, has let go the hundred little fingers of red, green, yellow, blue, and nub of black sticks that tumble and spill over and beyond the asphalt puddles... This symbolizes a rainbow after a storm, and the deeper meaning behind this symbolism is that although Salvador is caught in the middle of a brutal storm, the sun will soon come out and he will find a rainbow. One example of figurative language in Eleven is when Rachel uses similes such as Because the way you grow old is kind of like an onion or like the rings inside a tree trunk or like my little

Stimulants Against Peds The Ultimate Price for Glory The sports world is filled with endless competition with everyone trying to be the absolute best, so is greatness worth risking their own life? With the constant push from coaches, family members, fans, and even themselves, it is no wonder that athletes sometimes experiment with performance enhancers. There are many different types of Performance Enhancing Drugs, and each kind has different effects on the human body. There are many different categories of Performance Enhancing Drugs, a few include; Anabolic steroids which unnaturally build muscle at a much more rapid rate, Stimulants which can improve athletic performance and endurance while decreasing fatigue, and Painkillers which can allow an athlete to perform... An article by the name of The Doping Dilemma , by Michael Shermer gives a table that illustrates the many side effects that come along with each performance enhancing drug. For instance, a PED that enhances oxygen transfer will have side effects that include; blood clots, heart attack, stroke, and a PED that aids in the build of muscle and bone can cause; liver damage, breast development in men, and attitude changes (Shermer). Both categories of PED s are only a few of the different kinds of drugs, this means that this is only a fraction of the side effects that are related to the use of PED s. On the online article, Adverse Health Consequences of Performance Enhancing Drugs: An Endocrine Society Scientific Statement , the authors indicate Users of high doses of AAS may be more susceptible to rage, antisocial and violent behaviors, and suicidality. Sharing of needles and other paraphernalia and unprotected sex may increase the risk of infections such as hepatitis and HIV. The use of PEDs, especially in conjunction with analgesics or stimulants, may allow athletes to engage in extremely high intensity exercise, increasing the risk of musculoskeletal injuries. (Pope). The exact truth and not only physical, but mental health issues that are associated with the abuse of performance enhancing drugs are a real occurrence in all of
  • 4. English Settlers Vs Indians Analysis A huge detriment to the long, rocky process of English colonization in the New World was conflict with the Indians. Before the English settlers and the Indians first met on the James River, both already held strong ideas of what to expect. Both were confident in their abilities to overcome and control the other group, and both expected to use the other for a trading opportunity. However, the English saw the Indians as an advanced, highly developed group, while Indians thought the literal opposite of the foreigners settling onto their land. Inflexible assumptions between colonists and Indians were one of the main contributors to violent conflict between the two groups. The colonist s assumptions towards the Indians were at first respectful; they expected the tribe to be advanced and highly developed. Even though the colonists knew and respected the power of the Powhatan people, they still expected to control, bargain with, and convert the natives (Kupperman). Because they were unknowledgeable of the land and farming, they knew they would have to rely on the natives for crops in exchange for whatever goods they could supply. Though many English settlers wanted a peaceful trading relationship,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The only previous contact they had with Europeans was with the Spanish explorers, who captured Powhatan boys and raised distrust among the tribes (Tayac). Despite this, the Indians still wanted to set up a trading relationship with English settlers to obtain manufactured English goods they ve never had access to before. Although the initial reaction towards English settlers was one of wariness and hostility, the Indians quickly took pity on the settlers and gave them land and food. Also, the Indians knew that if the colonists depended on them for resources, they could use this support as a control

Essay on Use of DBCP and Relation to Infertility Use of DBCP and relation to infertility Dow produced DBCP (1,2 dibromo 3 chloropropane), a soil fumigant, and nematicide, which was sold under the names the Nemagon and Fumazone until the late 1970s. US banned DBCP in 1979 after it was linked to human sterility in California. But, Dow and three other companies continued producing the hazardous pesticide DBCP for years after it was banned and exported it to developing countries. Animal testing had revealed that the product caused male sterility in rats and the companies knew about it at least since the 1960s, but concealed this information. The company, however, continued to market Dursban in developing countries, including India and claimed it was safe for humans and pets. In 2003, Dow agreed to pay $2 million the largest penalty ever in a pesticide case to the state of New York, in response to a lawsuit filed by the Attorney General to end Dow s illegal advertising of Dursban as safe . Acquisition of Union Carbide The Bhopal Disaster of 1984 was the worst industrial disaster in the history of the world. It was caused by the accidental release of methyl isocyanate (MIC) from a Union Carbide India, Limited (UCIL) pesticide plant located in the heart of the city of Bhopal. UCIL was a joint venture between Union Carbide and a public/private consortium of Indian investors. The MIC leak killed thousands outright and injured anywhere from 150,000 to 600,000 others, at least 15,000 of whom died later from their injuries. The contamination due to the leak is still active and no cleanup has been done till now. Despite the involvement of Union Carbide in a criminal case in India, location of the plant in the heart of the city and the disaster site still not cleaned up, Dow bought Union Carbide in 2001. The transfer of ownership led to complicating the issue of cleaning up the plant and its environs of hundreds of tonnes of toxic waste, which has been left untouched. Environmentalists have warned that the waste is a potential minefield in the heart of the city, and

Essay On Gay Rights Ereny Michael Mrs. Webber English I H, Period 4 11 November 2017 The Fight for Gay Rights 63 percent of all surveyed Americans responded in favor of gays when asked if same sex relationships were morally acceptable, based on a 2017 study (statistica) . As it is commonly known, gays are people who choose to be in relationships with members of the same sex. The gay rights movement is the fight in which the individuals battle for their freedom to advance these relationships whether it is to marriage or simply so that homophobia does not stand in their way. The gay life style is seen as morally unacceptable in the eyes of some because of religious or traditional values (gay rights). Despite the reality that the gay community still copes with oppression in society, the gay rights movement has made tremendous accomplishments throughout history, furthering the thinking of the public and catalyzing awareness of the need for tolerance. To fully understand how this movement has developed and prospered, it is important to know the roots of these issues in history. The very first societies to have dealed with this were the Romans, Greeks, Jews who all had very different viewpoints on gay rights in the 1500s. The Greeks were not opposed to homosexuality and dealed with it like it was a natural part of life. This is shown in the way that Greek art work shows homosexual acts, and Greek writers wrote stories and poems about it (Oliver 15). Concerning romans, homosexuality was legal in

Energy Sources Of Renewable Energy Executive Summary The development of renewable and alternative energy is becoming more and more necessary as the traditional fossil fuel energy is a non renewable energy and can cause various environmental problems such as the global warming effect. However, the challenge today in generating alternative energy is to find a cost effective way while has the smallest harmful environmental impacts. Developing bioenergy have the advantage of reducing greenhouse gas emission while creating great economic values. Introduction Biomass energy is considered as one of the renewable energies in the latest alternative energy sources development. According to the renewable energyconsumption source data Table. I from U.S energy information administration, biomass energy is the largest source of renewable energies and the total share of biomass energy among all of the five alternative energies is approximately 50%. Although there is a 2.3% decrement of total consumption of biomass energy from 2014 to 2015 due to the decrease of wood consumption, there s still a large potential for the bioenergy technology growth. • 11. Summary Of The Novel Collapse By Jared Diamond Collapse, a novel by Jared Diamond, discusses current and future problems on Earth to warn readers of what is happening around them. Diamond goes into detail about specific societies, and then analyzes its meaning in the final chapter. Using the title The World as a Polder, he examines twelve major issues that are expected to worsen in the future. These issues include deforestation, overfishing, loss of diversity of species, loss of soil, growth of the human population, and the effect of more people. The limit on energy, freshwater, and sunlight is also mentioned, as well as the challenges brought up by toxic chemicals, alien species, and atmospheric gases. These environmental challenges are so hard to overcome because different people do not want to spend money and time fixing the same dilemmas. A common belief is that these problems are not going to matter anytime soon, so we have no reason to care. However, this is incorrect. We need to act now in order to move past... Despite Diamond s research, society pictures a year such as 2037 to be unreal. Diamond himself pictured it this way, but suddenly realized, It s not an imaginary year! (523). Along with this statement, Diamond says, ...rises in living standards in Third World countries whose inhabitants see and covet First World lifestyles; and immigration, both legal and illegal, of individual Third World inhabitants into the First World, driven by political, economic, and social problems at home (505). This poses a problem to the current First World citizens, because it can lower their living standards as well as creating a larger carbon footprint, less food and water, and more crowded cities. The only way to solve this is with a long term solution, which costs much more than a short term

  • 13. The Knowledge That The Laputians Possess May The knowledge that the Laputians possess may also reflect some symbolism towards the saying of ignorance is bliss. If one does not know about something, they tend to not worry about, but the Laputians know so much with their abstract theories of math and science that they are under continual disquietudes (Swift 2577). The knowledge they have also makes it very apparent that they never take the time to enjoy themselves as they fear the end of Earth constantly and when they meet an acquaintance in the morning, the first question is about the sun s health...and what hopes they have to avoid the stroke of the approaching comet (Swift 2577 78). They worry so much that their conversations are their worries which is very sad. Another sad thing is the men of Laputa do not even spend their time with their wives which makes it all the more easy for affairs to arise. The women of Laputa are free to do as they please, but they are unable to leave the island as the people of quality have found by frequent experience, how hard it is to persuade their women to return from below (Swift 2578). As unfaithful as they are, the women still attempt to leave. It almost seems like the knowledge the Laputians have is so powerful that it was able to make their wives unfaithful. The impracticalness of the Laputians become more evident with Gulliver s observations and discoveries. Gulliver is given tutors by the Laputian King to teach him their language; however, he finds that the words he

People think that kids reading the books will think they can get away with things that they normally would not get away with. A third reason that Harry Potter is banned is it is too eerie and dark. Design The designers of the website adopted a very simple layout. However, the simplicity of the layout did not compromise the effectiveness of the site. The white background color coupled with the consistent usage of color gives the website a professional look. The logo which is placed on the top left corner of the site has been made in a professional and does not cause a distraction from the content on the page. Glaucoma Is A Progressive Form Of Optic Neuropathy Glaucoma is a progressive form of optic neuropathy that is characterised by structural changes to the optic nerve head (ONH) and corresponding patterns of functional visual field (VF) loss. It is a major cause of irreversible blindness in the world. Currently, the pathogenesis responsible for glaucoma is not well understood. It has been suggested that local ischemia or mechanical damage from a raised intraocular pressure (IOP) resulting in retinal ganglion cell (RGC) loss may have a role in its aetiology. The treatment for glaucoma aims to reduce IOP through therapeutic or surgical means to reduce glaucomatous progression. The first line of treatment involves topical therapy such as eye drops. There are many classes of anti glaucoma drops with prostaglandin analogues being the most potent ocular hypotensive with a good safety profile. Before initiating treatment, it is important to consider factors such as the risk of progression and the patient s suitability to the particular therapy chosen. Once treatment has been initiated, patients must be reviewed regularly to assess the efficacy of the treatment, monitor for adverse reactions, confirm compliance, and to identify signs of progression. Glaucoma is a form of progressive optic neuropathy that has clinically visible structural damage at the ONH and RNFL that correlates to a functional VF deficit1 4. Gastroenteritis is inflammation and swelling of the gastrointestinal track. Gastroenteritis can usually caused by ingesting food contaminated with some bacteria. Furthermore, some common causes of gastroenteritis include, shigella infection, cholera, and salmonella infection. There are many symptoms of gastroenteritis, including diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain and vomiting (Guerrant, Bobak, 1991). In addition, vomiting and diarrhea can cause dehydration, and children are likely to get dehydrated more quickly. Thus, it is crucial to look for the signs of dehydration, such as dry mouth, dry skin and decreased urine output. The doctor initiates the diagnosis by performing a abdominal or rectal examination in order to eliminate the possibilities of pelvic abscesses and inflammatory bowel disease (Guerrant, Bobak, 1991). In addition, the doctor uses a stool culture to determine what bacteriaare responsible for causing the gastroenteritis (Guerrant, Bobak, 1991). 2.The organism responsible for this disease is a strain of E.coli called E.coli 0157:H7. E.coli is a gram negative rod that inhabit the human gastrointestinal track and mostly harmless. Authorization policies therefore govern the disclosure and modification of information. Access controls are 3 procedures that are designed to control authorizations. They are responsible to limit access to stored data to authorized users only. В· Integrity, Consistency An integrity policy states a set of rules (i. e. semantic integrity constraints) that define the correct states of the database during database operation and therefore can protect against malicious or accidental modification of information. Closely related issues to integrity and consistency are concurrency control and recovery. Concurrency control policies protect the integrity of the database in the presence of concurrent transactions. If these transactions do not terminate normally due to system crashes or security violations recovery techniques are used to reconstruct correct or valid database states. В· Auditing The requirement to keep records of all security relevant actions issued by a user is called auditing. Resulting audit records are the basis for further reviews and examinations in order to test the adequacy of system controls and to recommend any changes in the security policy.

Of the roughly 229 reported cases of vCJD, it s believed that at least 3 cases contracted the fatal neurodegenerative disease through blood transfusions. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While dysfunction of prion proteins remains the most widely accepted etiology of BSE, the USDA suggests there may be two other possible theories that could better explain the manifestation of BSE: the virino theory and the virus theory. However, both theories pale in comparison to the robust evidence in support of the prions theory. A major argument that works against both the virino theory and virus theory is that throughout several studies, the use of various treatments known to damage or inhibit nucleic acids have had no effect on the transmissibility of BSE. Interestingly, prion proteins lack nucleic acids making them an excellent candidate as the infectious agent responsible for the development of bovine spongiform encephalopathy. Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy is characterized by an unusually long incubation period ranging from 2 8 years. During the incubation period, an infected animal may not show any clinical signs suggesting it is in anyway unhealthy. This is a major reason several countries placed precautionary bans on blood donors. Experts believe it is entirely possible that a person could have contracted the infectious disease during the BSE outbreak and could be carrying the disease through an incubation period possibly extending beyond the suggested 2 8 year span without showing any clinical signs. Since no diagnostic test currently exists to test a person for vCJD while they are living, there is

Definition of Earnings Management Healy and Wahlen (1999) define earnings management as: Earnings management occurs when managers use judgement in financial reporting and in structuring transactions to alter financial reports to either mislead some stakeholders about the underlying economic performance of the company or to influence contractual outcomes that depend on reported accounting numbers. Another definition is given by Fields et al. (2001) who state that: Earnings management occurs when managers exercise their discretion over accounting numbers with or without restrictions. Such discretion can be either firm value maximizing or opportunistic . The above definitions highlight the point that managerial intent is a criterion for earnings management (Spohr 2005). Several academic literatures seek to point out the activities which can be considered to be earnings management. However, as the definition of earnings management does not rely on any one item of the income statement, it does not need to be directly connected to reported earnings. Its impact is through accounting numbers and may also be directed at financial ratios as opposed to earnings (Schipper 1989). Dechow and Skinner (2000) have classified earnings management as follows: Reporting TypeAccounting choices Within GAAP Conservative AccountingOverly aggressive recognition of provisions or reserves

They separate the sounds, particularly speech, that a person wants to hear from background noise. They improve what is known as the speech to noise ratio. ALSs are used by ... • 39. Aristotle s Views On Political Philosophy Along with his teacher, Plato, Aristotle is generally regarded as one of the most influential ancient thinkers, not just in political philosophy, but across a range of fields. In the Nicomachean Ethics Aristotle describes his account of political science as the most authoritative of sciences. It pronounces how political science that of the city or state, and which science fall under its authority. However, discussions in political philosophyhas developed further since Aristotleand therefore it is questionable as to whether they continue to remain significant. Throughout the following then, I will assess whether Aristotelian political philosophy is still relevant today. One of the three main themes of Aristotle s political theory is his naturalistic account of the state. According to Aristotle it exists as a natural phenomenon. Whether Aristotle uses the term nature in Politics in the same way as he does when describing his metaphysics or his philosophy of nature is unclear. In these nature is normally referred to as an inner principle of change and being at rest . To give an example of this a seed would be natural as it has its source of motion within itself, it grows into a plant by itself. A house on the other hand is not natural as the source of its motion is external; the house is a result of the relevant craftsmanship from humans. There appear to be two senses in which Aristotle believes the polis to be natural. All associations are formed with the aim to

Throughout My Last Duchess Browning illustrates the Duke s obsession with controlling the people around him; both past and present. One way the Duke exerts his dominance is by not allowing the emissary to talk. The Duke asks him questions but he does not allow him to answer so they quickly become rhetorical, for instance, when the Duke states Will t please you sit and look at her? It is assure that The Iliad s roots reach far back before Homer s time. Homer focused several characteristics of how their ancestors behaved and such behavior was to be passed on to the new generations. In The Iliad, Homer emphasized the role of the gods in the daily events, and how every happening was based of the desires of the gods. Here the argument is that because of one king, Agamemnon (king of Mycenae, Achaeans) fault towards Apollo s priest caused two civilizations to war against each other. That is in the very beginning of the poem, suggesting of more divine intervention expected through the text. Most of the people in the story seem to believe that the gods predetermined most of their actions. But the will of Zeus will always overpower the will of men, (Book 16, line 805). This is a small constant reference that Homer made throughout the text pertaining to the ability the gods having control over mortal lives, actions, and consequences. The gods were believed to toy with human life, as it was for their pleasure to see destruction or the complete opposite. He joins other great names; such as Tyson Gay, Mark McGwire, Barry Bonds, and Alex Rodriguez; all great athletes who have had their reputations tarnished by using performance enhancing drugs (sometimes shortened to PEDs). In his interview with Opera Winfrey, Armstrong stated that I didn t view [doping] [as cheating]. I viewed it as a level playing field (Lance). With this statement, Armstrong is declaring that many professional cyclists and other professional athletes engage in illegal doping in order to improve their performances. These drugs can be useful for their ability to decrease recovery time, allowing athletes to train more intensely. Currently, most forms of performance enhancing drugs are banned from use in professional sports(caffeine is a common legal substance). However, it is well known that performance enhancing drugs are used by athletes in a wide variety of sports at a variety of levels. Since, according to Armstrong, most athletes are using these drugs, a new approach needs to be implemented to deal with performance enhancing drugs. One possible solution is to just allow the use of performance enhancing drugs. This issue has become a catalyst for fierce debate on whether or not performance enhancing drugs should be allowed in professional sports. Those opposed to the legalization of performance enhancing drugs argue that these drugs cause harm to athletes,

The two major Railroad Strikes were the Great Railroad Strike of 1877 and Railroad Shop workers Strike of 1922. The Great Railroad Strike of 1877, was due to workers not being happy about the pay cuts that were being made by their employer so often. Northern Railroads began cutting salaries and wages. Because of various railroads cutting wages by 10% back to back, workers were not willing to continue working under those conditions. Not only were the wages of the workers being cut, the amount work of work given to the employees increased and the employer did not hire additional workers. This then caused railroad employees to respond by taking control of the rail yard switches, and blocking movement of trains. Throughout various cities such as Baltimore, Pittsburg, St. Louise, and Chicago, Violent acts began to occur. Many people died throughout the cities. The strike cause the country s commerce to become paralyzed and pushed governors in different states to utilize militia members to reopen rail traffic. This action also helped set the stage for violence that would occur later in the 1880s and 1890s. The Railroad Shop Workers Strike of 1922 affected everyone in the country. This strike occurred because of the pay cut of seven cents to the wages of the railroad workers. Approximately 400,000 rail shop workers from various unions were on strike because the cut was announced by the railroad labor board. When

Interpretivist, on the other hand, believes that knowledge is from the mind of people, and it seeks to understand subjective meaning by interpreting sense making (Stokes, 2011 pp75). Axiology means the concerned view of researchers towards values in research (Saunders et al., 2012). This painting shows us the horrors that happened that day in Madrid when hundreds of Spaniards rebelled the French were sent in to slaughter them. All but one of the Spaniards in this painting are cowering over to hide from the death that awaits them The one man who s not cowering is standing there with open arms ready to embrace the sacrifice he s making for his country. Around 1599 1600 of the common era Caravaggio painted The Calling of Matthew. This painting is of the tax collector Matthew being called upon by Christ. More specifically Matthew is sitting with his fellow tax collectors counting the money collected from the day. When looking at these works they both give me a strange feeling. Goya s painting is more depressing than anything, but it almost makes me feel proud of the man in the center as he displays true heroism. The soldiers are comical to me as all I can think about upon looking at them is the Winki Guard from the Wizard of Oz. The long coats and the tall fuzzy hats resemble those from the movie. Caravaggio s painting is mysterious in the regard that the shadows conceal the men looking and pointing toward Matthew. To add to it everyone around the table is looking at them quite concerned and confused. Overall this painting doesn t really appeal to me in any regard. However, I can appreciate the shadow work in both paintings. Debatably the most visually striking aspect of both of these
