Dubliners Research Paper
Dubliners by James Joyce is a collection of stories centered around Joyce s intentions to write
the moral history of Dublin s paralysis. Although paralysis seems to be the main theme in
Dubliners, another motif comes across in the pages of the stories. As if all of the mental,
physical, and emotional problems weren t enough, many of the characters in Dubliners are
alcoholics. Joyce utilizes the character of the drunk in many of the stories in Dubliners; hardly a
story skips a mention of a drink. The negative effects of alcohol occur again and again through
the collection of stories. For the most part, men are brought down by their addiction to alcohol
and their inability to control themselves when they are drunk. In Dubliners, the characters seek
their own desires, face obstacles that frustrate them, and ultimately give in to their need to
consume alcohol. With Dubliners, James Joyce brings attention to the different issues that
consuming alcohol caused in early 20th century Ireland using three particular stories;
Counterparts , Grace and Ivy Day in the Committee Room .James Joyce was born in the late
1800s in Dublin, Ireland. Joyce came from a big family; he was the eldest of ten children. It is
known that Joyce was not raised in a stable household. His father, John, was a known alcoholic and
his family did not have much money due to his father s constant spending. Despite the family s
continuous financial instability, however, Joyce s father was aware of his son

Argumentative Essay About The Truman Show
The Truman Show Reading and Creating Piece Sunny Ou 10C
Essay Topic: Similar to his interview on Trutalk, write an interview with Christof, which takes
place after the final episode, in which he justifies his actions and responds to Truman s decision to
leave the world of Seahaven.
Clive: To everyone around the world tuning into this exclusive interview with none other than
Christof, we sincerely welcome you all to this special broadcast. Christof, welcome, The Truman

Clive: You were willing to capsize him, is that not similar to letting him die.
Christof: Similar to a reasonable extent, The Truman Show has become a highly recognized
worldwide show, we could not have such an abrupt ending and Truman would have most likely
survived. We would have accumulated a procedure, identical to how we saved Truman s father.
Even if Truman did die, at least it would increase our show ratings.
Clive: Well, I m shocked to be honest, you just said that Truman was like a son to you and yet you
were willing to let him die?
Christof: Yes, that was true to a reasonable extent, however the chances of him actually dying were
minimal. We would have done everything in our power to rescue Truman.
Clive: So even if Truman did survive and was rescued back to land, wouldn t Truman be exposed

Young Man on Sixth Avenue
Young Man on Sixth Avenue In Young Man on Sixth Avenue the author Mark Halliday
discusses the significants of the story s symbolism, conflicts with an interpretive point of view,
and the overall theme. The young man in the story is a man of confidence, good looks, and
youth until years pass and his life seems to not shine as bright in his eyes like his younger years
were. He was dependent on his dark blue eyes and charm to get his way with women and in life in
general. The man doesn t seem too appreciative of his life as a twenty five year old until those

How Did Tennessee Williams Use Spectacles In The Glass...
When making unrealistic things come to life, it is not the main ideas that make it happen, but
the small details. Tennessee Williams, the author of The Glass Menagerie, does a very well job
with giving spectacles meaning. He uses the picture of the father in their living room to show
how different life would be like without a father figure. Laura s leg brace establishes the fact
that being different was not common. He also demonstrated how smoking was very common for
men in that given time period. The use of spectacles in The Glass Menagerie gives it a real
effect. First, the father of Tom and Laura who left when they were a young age showed how much
of a struggle it was to support a familywithout a man. Amanda tried hard to do it on her

The Effect Of Faults On Oil Migration Essay
The Effect of Faults on Oil Migration
Wentao Zhang
Missouri University of Science and Technology
Abstract
Faults play important roles in oil migration and accumulation. Faults can not only promote oil
migration, but also trap and accumulate oil. This paper explores some methods to find out a fault
and confirm it is opened or closed. Zhang, C., Xie, X.N., Jiang, T., Liu, X.F. (2005) fou nd out
the properties of faults in the BZ25 1 oilfield of Bohai basin by using some geophysics and
geochemistry reflect of formation waters and oils. This paper explains some causes of di fferent
properties of faults. Different kinds of faults, like the Vicksburg growth fault of South Texas and
faults in the BZ25 1 oilfield, lead to different results of oil migration, accumula tion and distribution.
Keywords: fault; oil migration; opened fault; closed fault
Introduction
There are more than one trillion barrels of crude oil in the whole world. And there are also
different kinds of faults under the ground. Fault is a crack in the crust of earth resulting from the
displacement of one side with respect to the other. Oil migration means that oil spo ntaneously
move from high pressure area to low pressure area, oils always move upward. Oil accumulation
means that oil always accumulate in their relatively smallest potential energy area. Fault plays very
important role in the oil migration and accumulation. Faults can be di vided to opened faults and
closed faults which are relative concepts. Opened

The Life of Robert E Lee
In life we all want to see things as black and white, cut and dry, and easy to understand. This is
not the case with Robert E. Lee. He was smart, loyal and above all, complicated. We like to make
him out as some old general guy who fought for the South in the Civil War. Eventually lost at
Gettysburg and because it was the turning point of the Civil War; he became famous for losing.
He is a lot more than just that. He was an actual person who, from his birth up to his death, dealt
with real life situations. On January 19, 1807, Robert E. Lee was born in Stratford, Virginia to
Henry and Anne Lee. His father was a Revolutionary War hero, nicknamed Light Horse Harry ,
also being a Major General. Being born in a military family, Robert seemed likely to follow in his
father s footsteps. When he was 18, he enrolled into West Point Military Academy where he
graduated second in his class in 1829. In 1831, he met and married his wife Mary Anna Randolph
Custis, the great granddaughter of George Washington and Martha Washington. They later had
seven children: four daughters and three sons. Instead of doing anything combat related he served
in the Corps of Engineers, looking over the construction of the United States coastal defenses.
However, his service in the Mexican American war in 1846 changed that. Being a member of
General Winfield, he made himself stand out, earning three brevets for gallantry and gaining the
rank of colonel from the war. After that,

The Causes Of Organized Crime In The United States
Organized crime, which gained infamous attention in America back in the 1920s during the
prohibition era, can be defined as systematical criminal activities that are controlled by a powerful
group for profit on a city wide, interstate, and sometimes international scale. These types of
organizations engage in illegal activities as a way of generating income, or black money. They
structure like a business, freely taking on violence and bribery to preserve their operations and
maintain internal and external control. Internal controls provide assurance regarding the
achievement of operational objectives (making sure they are effective, efficient, and accurate),
while external controls include different resources and contacts (suppliers). Everything they do,
from gambling to prostitution to dealing with drugs, goes against all government regulations. But
what forces them to commit crimes that are against government regulations and what do they gain
personally? How can we stop, or at least lessen the activities of these crimes?
Organized Crime is considered a major threat to the development and security of their country. They
gain profit through the evaluation of countries risks, benefits, and markets, and have taken to
multiple forms of corruption to invade political, economic, and social levels not only in their own
country, but in the world. Today, organized crime still poses as a major threat in American society
with their illegal operations, especially with the growth of

Porfirio Diaz s Impact On The Country s Material...
I argue that Porfirio Diaz made contributions towards his country s material prosperity and pulled
Mexico out of it s declining state. Porfirio DГaz is often remembered as a period of social
degradation and oppression of freedoms in Mexico. His 35 year dictatorship brought about an
immense amount of hardship for the lower classes and an unfair system of wealth distribution. The
image of Porfirio DГaz as a ruthless tyrant is one almost everyone has of him post revolutionary
Mexico. However, with that being said, what are often overlooked are the giant economic and
social benefits that were brought about under his rule. Through massive improvement programs,
financial management, and the desire to see law and order, Porfirio DГaz brought much prosperity
and stability to Mexico when it needed it most.
In this paper, I hope to address how Porfirio Diaz was a horrible leader, but yet still is responsible
for the rapid development in Mexico, and the greatest factor of his rapid development was the
Mexican railroad transportation facilities. As a result of Diaz s success, railroads encouraged both
progression and underdevelopment, which secured Mexico as a state.
Leaders of Mexico have been constantly controversial and the presidency of Porfirio Diaz was no
exception. His thirty five year term as president (or dictator) converted Mexico into a modern,
industrialized state. Although presidency of Diaz has been remembered and criticized for its
suppression of rights and

Alchemy And Greek Culture
Alchemy is mainly concerned with discovering different methods of changing ordinary metals
into gold or to find a universal elixir. It is a form of chemistry practiced in the Middle Ages. The
journey of Alchemy takes place in Egypt where the word Khem had been applied in reference to
the fertility of the food plains near the Nile. Egyptian beliefs in the hereafter and mummification
procedure probably gave rise to rudimentary chemical knowledge and a goal of immortality.
Later, Greek had conquered Egypt where the ways of Egyptians intrigued Greek philosophers.
Greek views of how matter is contained of the 4 elements of nature had been merged with
Egyptian sacred science. The Greek word for Egypt resulted in Khemia The Arabs added the word

Effects Of Bilingualism On Divergent Thinking Of Adults
Effects of Bilingualism on Divergent Thinking of Adults
Introduction Literature Review
Since the early 20th century numerous studies, in psychology as well as linguistics, have been
conducted on the effects of bilingualism on cognitive abilities (Saer, 1923; Smith, 1923; Gowan
Torrance, 1965). Until the 1960s there was some consensus among experts about the detrimental
effect of bilingualism on cognitive development. However, after the publication of Peal and
Lambert s article on the relation of bilingualism to intelligence, most of these theories were
discredited due to methodological flaws (Peal Lambert, 1962). A majority of the studies conducted
before this period did not take into consideration the differences in age, gender, culture, second
language proficiency and socio economic status between the monolingual and bilingual participants.
Research conducted thereafter has found largely positive effects of bilingualism on cognitive
functions (Landry, 1974; Holtzman, 1980). Recent research in the field has focused on
understanding the relationship between bilingualism and specific aspects of cognition, such as
inhibitory control, creativity and metalinguistic awareness, as opposed to the earlier studies which
tried to associate bilingualism with intelligence. Even though, most studies have found a positive
correlation between bilingual proficiency and cognitive benefits, there is still much debate in this
area of research (Leikin, 2012). In 1992, Ricciardelli

Women In The Arabian Nights
The Arabian Nights allows the reader to view the world from an Islamic perspective. One can
understand the values that shape and mold their society, such as faith and wisdom. It would not
be an exaggeration to state that the Islamic society is based around these traits and are seen as
crucial for survival. These traits are a major factor on how males and females are portrayed in
The Arabian Nights. Women may either be portrayed as a possession of the male or the male
under the influence of the female or the male is portrayed as a gullible fool. Such varieties of
portrayals depend on the situation of the story. In the Arabian Nights one can see different aspects
of faith in Islamic society. This is due to the importance that faith has... Show more content on

Robert Irwin States this in the novel called The Arabian Nights A Companion, Sometimes,

why a deerate all a persons planets or why they almost hit one while driving. Through my research

The Nanjing Massacre Of Nanjing
November 11th, 1937, was the date that the Japanese obtained secure control over Shanghai,
meaning that this was the date that the Japanese troops began their march to Nanjing. However,
the cruel actions that lead up to the massacre in Nanjing started on August 15, where the
Japanese Navy send planes that flew over Nanjing and released bombs. From that day, all the
way until December 13 (when Nanjing fell), it was estimated that more than 50 missions flew
over Nanjing, using more than 800 planes and around 160 tons of bombs. An attack that was
reported on August 27 said that within a time period of two hours, 400 500 houses were
destroyed and over one hundred people were killed, with several hundred people injured. These
actions planted the seed of fear in the Chinese civilians, which grew stronger daily with the
bombing attacks. Soon people begin to evacuate, and the population of Nanjing dropped from more
than a million to half a million. The Japanese troops entered Nanjing on December 7, and launched
a massive attack on Nanjing, which caused the Chinese troops to retreat to the opposite side of the
Yangtze River on December 12. On following day of the retreat, the Japanese s 6th and 16th
division entered Nanjing, with an addition of two more Japanese Fleets. With this, the Nanjing
Massacre begun. Within the next seven weeks, the Japanese destroyed everything that was in sight,

Fluoride Essay
Fluoride
Fluoride is a mineral that occurs naturally in almost all foods and water supplies. The fluoride ion
comes from the element fluorine. Fluorine, the 13th most abundant element in the earth s crust, is
never encountered in its free state in nature. It exists only in combination with other elements as a
fluoride compound. Fluoride is effective in preventing and reversing the early signs of tooth decay.
Researchers have shown that there are several ways through which fluoride achieves its decay
preventive effects. It makes the tooth structure stronger, so teeth are more resistant to acid attacks.
Acid is formed when the bacteria in plaque break down sugars and carbohydrates from the diet.
Repeated acid attacks break down the tooth, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nearly 145 million Americans are currently receiving the benefits of optimally fluoridated water.
With the 1995 enactment of Assembly
Bill 733 in California, ten states and territories in the United States now mandate fluoridation
through legislation. Besides California, these include seven other states (Connecticut, Georgia,
Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio and South Dakota), as well as the District of Columbia and
Puerto Rico. Three states (South Dakota, Rhode Island and Kentucky), as well as the District of
Columbia, have achieved the ultimate success with 100 percent of their treatable community water
systems providing the benefits of fluoridation to their citizens.
While safety has been an issue frequently raised by those opposed to fluoridation, scientific data
from peer reviewed clinical research provide overwhelming evidence that the adjustment of
fluoride levels in drinking water to the optimal level is undoubtedly safe. Hundreds of studies on
fluoride metabolism have tracked the outcomes of ingested fluoride. Ingested fluoride essentially
travels three metabolic pathways. It is either excreted by the kidneys, absorbed by the teeth or
taken up in the skeleton. At optimal levels fluoride has never been demonstrated to cause skeletal
fluorosis or other bone problems. On the contrary, there is mounting evidence that continued
exposure of individuals to low levels of

Taking a Look at Humanistic Psychology
Humanistic psychology is refereed as the 3rd force in psychology it was an alternative to
psychoanalysis and behaviourism. Humanistic psychology was instead focused on each individual
s potential and stressed the importance of growth and self actualization. A fundamental belief that
people are born good but that this can be distorted through social interactions and life experiences.
In this essay I plan to explain Carl Rogerss theories of person centred and how I have linked them
to myself. Carl Rogers stated that there was many key aspects which make up a person s personality.
The Organismic self the true self both conscious and unconscious. The Organismic valuing process
a fundamental concept within humanistic psychology. A tendency to automatically pick, work

gratifying life. A biologically driven process not aware of I or ME . The Actualizing tendency,
human organism has an underlying force which drives us to enhance and meet our maximum full
potential physically, spiritually and emotionally. The actualising tendency can never be destroyed

People are going hungry because of poverty, not because of a shortage of food (Silverbush, 2012).
The problems arising from factory farms are only getting bigger and more disastrous to the
environment. These farms raise hundreds or thousands of animals in close confinement;
otherwise know as concentrated animal feeding operations or CAFOs. Large CAFOs are
controlled under federal and state pollution regulations because they produce massive quantities
of animal waste that can pose environmental and heath hazards if mishandled (Weeks, 3). So why
would farmers be farming this way it is so dangerous? The answer is simple; these farms can
produce large quantities of food cheaply. If a farm can produce more hogs or calves, its profit is
larger. In order for farmers to stay on their land, they are forced into poorly paid off farm
employment (Food). Livestock farmers are told that they must adopt the new industrial technologies
that make CAFO s feasible, if they expect to have a future in farming (Kallen, 64). The byproducts
of such farms are producing harmful odors. The runoff from these farms pollutes streams and
groundwater with antibiotics, insecticides, pathogens and emits poisonous gases that are hazardous
and create offensive odors (Weeks, 2). The question now becomes, is factory farmingthe only way
out? Is an industrial approach to agriculture needed to feed the poor and hungry of the world? The

Why We Should Be Heading Towards Space Exploration
Why We Should Be Heading Towards Space
Space exploration is something that has intrigued mankind ever since science fiction writers of old
sparked the imagination of the people. Since then, we have made leaps and bounds towards space
travel with landing people on the moon, sending satellites to Saturn, the photos from the Hubble
Telescope and the rover, Curiosity, on Mars. These advances have provided information that will
prove to be beyond measure. While the cost of such information has been high, the benefits of the
information has been irrefutable. Ultimately, this information goes to support not only further
exploration of space, but also towards technologies that will benefit Earth directly. Two such
projects deal primarily with solar power and nuclear waste disposal. Both of these industries would
benefit immensely from such a service and would also generate the need for many space flights
(Coopersmith, 2012). According to Coopersmith (2012), Space based solar power (SBSP) promises
gigawatts of electric power with minimum environmental damage. Example like this go to show
that the inventions and benefits realized through space exploration reach far beyond the cosmos and
into the everyday lives of people.
Right off the bat, the question for most is, with all the benefits realized through space exploration
aside, what is the actual cost of these endeavors. The space shuttle program (now retired) was the
primary consumer when it came to taxpayer funds. According to

The Role of Eve in Paradise Lost
The importance Milton attached to Eve s role in Paradise Lost and in the Garden of Eden is now
recognised and acknowledged. (Green, 1996) Milton s treatment of Adam and Eve s relationship
is complex. Sometimes referring to them in ways that indicate equality, (ibid) sometimes stressing
their separateness as individuals (ibid) and other times they are complementary halves of a whole.
(ibid) Taking on the view that many support; that Milton intended Eve to seem completely
inferior to Adam, we can examine Eves role in the fall. Traditionally, readers and critics have
responded to Eves actions with compassion and concern. (Revard, 1973) Two critics who
particularly react this way are Dennis Burden and Fresdon Bowes. (ibid) A.J.A Waldock has

If Adam had forced Eve to stay with him, he would have Eve s without free choice. This would
have tarnished the liberty of Eden. (ibid) Adam has tried to make clear to Eve what her
responsibilities are and what her place is in the garden. He has also warned her of the dangers in
the garden. Eve knows also of the dangers of Satan by overhearing Raphael talking about them as
in a shady nook I stood behind. (Levi, 1996) Eve is clearly at a disadvantage in encountering
Satan in an intellectual debate; however Milton does lead the reader to question the role of
intelligence in the poem. It wasn t the intellectually able angles the politically astute Beelzebub
and the rhetorically expert Belial (Revard, 1973 p.76) who unmasked Satan in Book V. Many
feel that Adam is guilty of negligence; however, others feel that he is merely an ineffective
leader. (Revard, 1973) Stella p.Revard goes as far as saying that God is in fact to blame. Since
refusing Eve the permission to leave would break the rules of free will then God is blameworthy
for having left uncompelled the wills of human beings in the first place and having permitted
Satan the opportunity to try them. (Revard, 1973 p.74) Is it only Milton s portrayal of Eve that is
the cause of so much controversy? In examining two different examples of the portrayal of Eve,
the reader can decide if it was Milton who created the controversy surrounding Eve, or if the

proposal called the 2014 2016 Biennial Budget and Amendments to the 2013 Appropriation Act.
When Mr. McDonnell released his proposal at the Capital in Richmond he spoke about some key
things in regards initiatives that needed to be taken.
The first thing people noticed about the proposed budget was that it was 96 billion dollars. He
made some increases in some areas while decreasing funding to areas many people considered
unacceptable. This includes cuts to schools; his plan shaved 48 million off kindergarten
programs deemed underutilized. One thing that was proposed that most people agreed with was
an increase to the states contingency fund. In the budget Governor McDonnell will increase the
rainy day fund to over one billion dollars. However, higher education was a big concern in the
budget as evident because of the almost 200 million boost in the funds allocated for colleges and
universities. The one major factor that stuck in people s mind the most and was the trigger that
ignited support for the piece of legislation was the fact that Mr. McDonnell did not propose new
taxes. In the plan there is a lot of cutting to programs that are deemed unnecessary and reallocating
of funds that Governor McDonnell feels are very important, for example Medicaid. This program
is what spark new debate in the house and senate about how Medicaid should not be expanded. This
expansion would

Hal s Relationship to His Father vs Falstaff in...
King Henry V is one of the greatest kings that ever ruled England and was a favorite among his
people. One of the reasons behind this is the presence of two men in his life; his father, King
Henry IV, and Sir John Falstaff, his lowlife friend and bar companion. Both men represent two
opposite father figures to the young prince. It is the Prince s ability to take and acquire the best
traits in each that makes him surpass both of them and become great. Prince Hal s relationship with
both men is one of conflict. On one hand, his relationship with his father is tumultuous, while on
the other his relationship with Falstaffis confusing. Though it is the main source of his father s
disapproval, Prince Hal learns a great deal from his... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This gives Hal a constant sense of inaptness. Knowing that his father thinks low of him drives
him more towards Falstaff who praises him at all times, giving him the support he needs at such
age. Hal s disobedience is partly a stubborn reaction to his father s criticism and partly a rebellion
that is natural in his age. On the other hand, King Henry IV is haunted by a sense of guilt that is
translated to a feeling of suspicion towards his own son. The source of this guilt is his usurping
of the throne and, in a way or another, being a participant in the killing of Richard II, if not by
giving the orders at least by turning a blind eye to it. King Henry IV unconsciously harbors a
belief that God will punish him for doing this through his son. He expects that it will either be
the fall of Hal when he succeeds him or Hal overthrowing him and taking over the throne.
However, both options lead the king to treat his son with caution. An example of this is his fury
when he wakes up to find that his crown is missing and thinking that his son wishes his death to
become the king. The relationship between Hal and Falstaff, however, is perplexing. Hal is either
using Falstaff to serve his ends and when he does not need him anymore he totally discards him or
he truly loves the man but lost all hope in reforming him. Prince Hal used to put up with Falstaff,
covering him, paying his bills and tolerating his lies, but if this is the price that

him. Be that as it may, again, the old woman is shown deceiving Pip. Every year, on the birthday

Cross-Cultural Communication Vs American Culture

Abstract
This paper is about comparing and contrasting the American style of communication and that of
Bahrain. Different countries have their own interpretation for every single issue based on their
culture background and their way of thinking. The most significant characteristics of American
culture are: individualism, equality, competition, freedom and privacy, action orientation,
directness, particularity, and a problem solving orientation. In Bahrain is somewhat the same as
other Arab countries, religion faith and local traditions play a large role in the people s lives,

(Nussbaum, 2005, par 6) In Bahrain people are conservative and they do not like unexpected
events. Therefore they do a lot of plans to stay away from troubles. Also no one likes to take

not accept unexpected actions or events.
Americans obey rules most of the time, but they see rules as someone else s idea of how they
should do things. They think the rule might have been appropriate in some other situation but it
might not be appropriate for their situation now. Therefore they break it and do what they think
is a better idea. Though Americans say, Rules are made to be broken, but they never say, Laws are
made to be broken. Laws are official legal and they proudly claim that in America, No one is above
the law . (Nussbaum, 2005, par 9)
In Bahrain popular people obey the rules, otherwise they will under the risk of detention. But
people who belong to the royal family and those are very rich, they do not care about rules or even
law they always break the law with any kind of accountability. In general, establishing business in
Bahrain is straightforward. The government of Bahrain vigorously seeks to increase foreign direct
investment in Bahrain especially from the United States and western countries. On other hand

The Impact Of Employment Conditions On Occupation
The impacts of employment conditions on occupation fulfillment is that people decide work
fulfillment by looking at what they are getting from the occupation and what they might want to or
trust that they ought to get. For instance, if a worker is accepting a yearly compensation of
$35,000 and trusts that he or she ought to be accepting a compensation of $30,000 than he or she
will feel fulfillment; in any case, if the worker trusts that he or she ought to get $40,000 than he or
she will feel dissatisfaction. This correlation would apply to every occupation aspect including:
aptitude level, position, limited time openings and supervision. The impacts of low employment
fulfillment can be extensive and this issue is of sympathy toward independent company proprietors
and also huge organizations. On the off chance that workers are not content with their occupations,
a few regions of their workare influenced and their conduct can likewise influence different
employees. When one employee is hopeless doing their occupation, the majority of the other
employees they come into contact with will be influenced by their disposition. Unfortunately, if
you see somebody who is so clearly unhappy, it will have you wondering what is wrong taking
you away from what you need to be doing. Negative states of mind can spread through a work
environment like an out of control fire. Low occupation fulfillment, combined with low
representative assurance breaks even with an absence of profitability

Drinking Age Debate
The beginning of the new year symbolizes resolution, fresh starts, and most importantly change.
This year, the month of July will mark the 33rd anniversary of the 1984 National Minimum
Drinking Age, the act that states all states must enforce the legal age of 21 to purchase and
consume all alcohol. However, with each year modern society is growing, improving, drastically
changing. 18 year olds in the U.S. are capable of voting, working full time, engaging in marriage,
and are thought of as completely responsible for their actions as they are legally adults, so why are
they incapable of being responsible enough to consume alcohol? This is causing many in the U.S.
to start questioning the legitimacy or need for this law that inhibits states from... Show more content

Underage drinking has been occurring since laws were set in place for age qualifications, but it
is better serving American society by continuing it because we can t accept lowering the
national age? Ruth C. Engs, a professor for Applied Health Sciences at Indiana University, finds
that the mandated drinking age should be lowered to 18 or 19. If young adults were legally
allowed to drink in controlled environments, then responsible drinking methods could be taught,
resulting in mature behavior when consuming alcohol (Engs, 1). By keeping the drinking age so
high, students or young adults are forced to hide drinking and more often than not, turn to binge
drinking, an unhealthy, addictive, and extremely dangerous form of drinking that often results in
blackouts and alcohol poisoning. Engs states, For example, 22% of all students under 21
compared to 18% over 21 years of age are heavy drinkers. This is not the only issue that arises
from underage drinking. Newsweek writer, Jeffrey A. Tucker, sees that this law is only causing
over indulgence, anti social behavior, disrespect for the law, secrecy and sneaking and a massive
diversion of human energy. To diminish these issues, people are turning towards the examples of
other nations that have managed to maintain low drinking age laws, with low risk results. In other
countries, alcohol is seen as a cultural norm and are taught at young age how to responsibly
consume. However, it is treated the opposite in America, instead, it is seen as how Wil Fulton from
the Huffington Post sees it, forbidden fruit . Fulton states through a claim made by the World
Health Organization, that while Europeans tend to consume more alcohol, Americans still die from
more alcohol related causes. In efforts to change this law and hopefully encourage safe and
responsible drinking, many are turning towards the Amethyst Initiative, a movement created by John

The key can be changes and unique to each sender and receiver. ( Symmetric encryption, ) states,
There are two types of symmetric algorithms. Stream algorithms (Stream ciphers) and Block
algorithms (Block ciphers). Stream ciphers only encrypt one bit at a time. This can make this cipher
faster than block ciphers, but stream ciphers have a security gap that can be harmful for specific
types of attacks. These specific attacks can cause information to be compromised. Block ciphers
encrypts information in blocks instead of doing it bit by bit. The size of the blocks is usually 64
bits. Triple DES and AES are the most popular symmetric algorithms that use block ciphers.
The use of symmetric encryption has several advantages when compared to asymmetric encryption.
Symmetric encryption is faster than public key algorithms. (:Symmetric encryption, ) states,
Public key algorithms are very slow, roughly 1,000 times slower than symmetric algorithms. It is
impractical to use them to encrypt large amounts of data. With the volume of data we will be

encryption would be the top choice at this time. It is also not wise to use public key signature
algorithms to sign large messages. The use of a fixed length hash would be reasonable. The hash is

The King of Kings
In the Bible, Jesus Christ, the embodiment of the Christian God is described as the King of Kings
. Christians since before the dream of Constantine have believed God and Christ constitute a ruler
of the universe. Anglo Saxon society perceived the Christian God in the mold of the pre Christian
Germanic tradition of kingship. The Anglo Saxon perception of Godas a king in the Germanic
tradition has tremendous significance on late Anglo Saxon politics. The inclusion of the Christian
deity in the leadership hierarchy of Anglo Saxon society contributed to changes in how earthly
kings themselves were perceived.
Tacitus s Germania offers insight into value system of the continental pagan ancestors of the Anglo
Saxons three centuries before Horsa and Hengist. Those peoples, collectively referred to as the
Germani are a warrior society. As a culture, they valued no trait higher than bravery in battle and
perceived cowardice as a supreme disgrace . On the subject of the Germani leaders Tacitus wrote,
They choose their kings for their noble birth, their leader for their valor. But even the power of
the kings is not absolute or arbitrary. As for the leaders, it is for example rather than their
authority which wins special distinction . These war leaders leading by example inspired fierce
loyalty from those under their command. Tacitus wrote On the field of battle it is a disgrace to the

Train s Journey And Transportation
train s journey and that why a lot of regional trains and international passenger trains have food
service cars and sleeping cars along with the passenger cars.
Since the 40s of the 20th century, the number of railway passengers in many of the industrial
cities has declined, and that s because of the increased demand and the use of cars and planes.
However Railway systems are the most common means of travel by passengers in general in Japan
and Switzerland.
Shipping and cargo trains:
Most of the income of the Railway systems in many countries from transporting and shipping goods
as shipping goods through railways for long distances is cheaper than any other shipping method of
land transportation. It can be stated that shipping trains in the past Soviet Union transported the

Stanford Experiment Vs Holocaust Experiment

the kind of psychological and physical treatments that the guards offer to the prisoners.
The Stanford prison experiment took place in the year 1971. In this experiment young men were

environment that resembles a prison at Stanford of university. On the other hand Holocaust

The holocaust experiment advocates that there is need for redefinition of cultural values in order to

Mrs Dalloway Isolation Essay
Isolation is one of the major themes in the novel Mrs. Dalloway by British novelist Virginia
Woolf. Many of the major characters seem to feel a disconnect from the world that they are living
in. Isolated by class, mental state, and emotional disconnect. Each character struggles through the
process of coping with their detachment from other people. In Mrs. Dalloway, the characters
Septimus, Lucrezia, and Clarissa all must deal with inherent isolation. Perhaps the character who
experiences the deepest feeling of disconnect is Septimus Smith. A war veteran who suffers from
severe PTSD, his wife, Lucrezia is the only person he has left. Despite surviving the war, Septimus
still suffers. His mental state never recovered, which is obvious to the people around him. With

Critical Critique Of Dr Faustus
Doctor Faustus was written in Elizabethan age that is also known as Shakespearean age or as a
Renaissance period. It is a historical play based on the story of Faust who is a well known
doctor of theology. He has too much knowledge and wants to acquire more. Law and physic are
the good wits and he thinks that philosophy is not petty good. He is of the view that divinity is
the basest and all the necromantic books are glorious. He withdrew God and sells his soul in the
hands of Lucifer, Prince of Hell. He has also committed a fling with Helen of Troy and become
eternally loathsome.

Some of the critics are of the view that Doctor Faustus is a play which deals with the unevenness.
It has some gaps in the middle part of the plot. It does not have any good start, ending as well as
middle. Just because of this the unity of action with the chain of effect and cause is badly
interrupted. But the reality is contrary to this, no doubt the unity of action is there and the middle
portion of the play is the most essential part of the play.

end. But Doctor Faustus does not follow these rules. Doctor Faustus has a weak middle if compare

Data is important and a main stream form of communication throughout the world; however,
without being able to represent the data in a format that is easily understandable, then the data

Female Convicts As A Subject Of Historical Discussion
There has been a lack of interest in female convicts as a subject of historical discussion. The
history of female convicts has traditionally been incorporated into the framework of male convicts
with grave reference to the male convict experience. The convict women who were transported to
Australia on ships Elizabeth 5th and Henry Wellesley in 1836 faced extreme difficulty in
achieving freedom and reputability. It is the view of many historians that women were
incorporated into a pattern initially designed to accommodate men . This essay will investigate the
origins and characteristics of a sample of 10 female convicts arriving to Sydney in1836. The essay
aims to establish an alternative impression of the female convicts that were deemed damned
whores, skill less and prostitutes. In agreement with the 4 of the 5 studied historians, I hold the
view that the women were the victims of a repressive patriarchal society and the appellation of
female convicts as damned whores is totally inadequate. I believe they were not members of a
professional criminal class; they were humans with basic human needs, doing anything they could
to survive. The female convicts exported to Australia have been the subjects of investigation since
transportation commenced. Many historians set out to determine whether the female convicts were
vicious criminals or innocent victims . Garton s article researches the debate concerning the origins
and characteristics of the convicts being

These eight types Jung described in his book where shown in pairs of opposites, so a person is
identified as one or the other. The first pair being ways in which we adapt to or orient ourselves
to the world around us. These two ideas are described as extraversion and introversion.
Extraversion is when our energy moves toward the outer world; the world outside of us.
Introversion is when our energy moves toward the inner world or the world inside of us (Carl jung
and psychological types, n.d.). Jung believed that our orientation to the world, whether that be
introverted or extroverted, is the foundation of our personality. Although most tend to go back and
forth these two energies on a daily basis depending on the environment we find ourselves in, Jung
believed that we feel most comfortable in one of these worlds over the other.
In addition to being either more extraverted or introverted, Jung theorized that these alone could not
account for behavioral differences he observed in people. Therefore, he identified two opposite
mental functions in which we use to take in information. Sensing perception which is the process of
collecting data through our five senses and intuitive perception which is the process in which
connections are made and meanings inferred beyond our sensory data (Carl jung and psychological

Charlemagne s Influence On Charlemagne
The life of Charlemagne is one of historical and utter greatness. He ruled in a time of turmoil and
disorder during middle ages in Europe. The successes of his past lineage prepared and propelled

Charlemagne incredible accomplishment during his sovereignty. For he not only invented an

Outside of attempting to achieve sovereignty, the Parti Quebecois has advocated for French

Persuasive Essay On Perfect College
Someone once said, Never base your life decision on advice from people who don t have to deal
with the results. Choosing which college you should attend is a stressful, arduous, exciting, and
terrifying process filled with endless conundrums and choices. However, the end result, the college
that provides oneself with the best education, career opportunities, and general satisfaction, is well
worth the mental and physical toll that the search takes on an individual. So, how do you
circumvent the twists and turns of fate and determine your dream school? The answer is rather
simple: do it yourself. In the end, you are the one going to college, not your parent, teacher,
grandparent, brother, sister, the guy behind the computer making the college rankings, or anyone
else. Though your decision may be influenced by a variety of sources, it is your responsibility to
walk your own fulfilling and enriching path. Consequently, the best way to determine your perfect
college match is to drown out the rankings and do your own research, research that considers every
factor that is important to you.
In 1983, U.S. News World Report recognized that prospective college students yearned for some
type of sign that would point them to their dream school, and U.S. News World Report granted
those students their wish with the first installment of the U.S. News World Report College Ranking.
Since 1983, the popularity of the Ranking has ballooned to a ridiculous height. In fact, on September

The No Child Left Behind ( Nclb ) Act Launching America s...
In 2001, President George W. Bush signed the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act launching
America s education system into an era of standardized testing as a method of holding states and
schools accountable for student achievement. With this recent surge of high stakes standardized
testing, teachers are held to increasingly higher expectations of quality instruction and meeting
these standards. However, schools are unprepared in achieving the goals of NCLB resulting in years
of struggle to improve student success in testing due to flaws in the traditional grading system.
Current schools and teachers lack proper grading practices that are inadequate of accurately
representing student achievement. With the increased focus on standards, it is imperative that
schools begin to implement an effective grading system so that all students and parents are
provided accurate feedback of students abilities.
There are myriad unforeseen consequences when schools use the traditional grading system. For
the past century, traditional grading practices and policies that have contributed to much of the
failure of student achievement. The use of the traditional grading system has slowly led to the
major issue of grade inflation. Most often students grade tend to be inflated with the help of non
academic factors such as homework, participation and student effort. High school teachers tend
include effort as part of the grade, giving high grades to students who work in class despite whether

The Seventies Will Affect Today s World
Technology: The seventies saw huge advances in electronics without which today s world would
be very different: The invention of the microprocessor, quickly followed by the personal computer
and game console; also computer networks, in fact the embryo of Internet was established then.
And not just computers, in 1973 Motorola showed the very first prototype of a mobile phone.
During that decade we expanded humanity s reach off planet, commercially with the start of the
sat TV industry, and scientifically with the sending of robots to Mars and the outer planets.
Politics: The Cold War was still on, the Vietnam war ended in defeat for the USA, and president

This paper will analyze the short story Diary of a Parish Clerk written in 1824 by Steen Steensen
Blicher. This short story was written during the golden age of Romanticism. After a short
summary of the story and analyzing the story s composition and narration, I will analyze the
unreliable narrator within the story (Monrad, 10 19 16, sl. 8). I will then compare certain aspects
of the story that relate to Romanticism. Lastly, I will discuss aspects of the story that relate to
Blicher s perspective on society and what he intended to say using the unreliable narrator. The short
storyDiary of a Parish Clerk begins with an introduction of a pastor, the pastor s son, and a peasant
boy. The peasant boy s father dies shortly and the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Example Of Narrative Essay For The Great Gatsby
I grew up in a small town outside of Louisville called Corydon. It was a quaint place where
successful businessmen, doctors, and pilots lived to get away from the big city drama. Like a
group of animals, they lived together in a herd, specifically a neighborhood called Willow
Creek. With my dad being a pilot in the United Parcel Service, I had the pleasure of existing
among the rich, entitled people of Willow Creek. Growing up, my friends took on this Great
Gatsby old money persona from their parents who came from a lineage of money and
connections. What they wore were the most fashionable clothes that money could buy, what they
drove were the newest, stylish cars, and what they thought were egotistical, upscale ideas.
However, if I were to proclaim that I was always morally superior to any of them, I would be
lying: children are cognitively molded by their peers. As my peers and I advanced in our youth, we
would associated together at school, sports, after school, clubs, and extracurriculars. I enjoyed the
company; however,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

it upon myself to prove it to them by not just words, but actions. Even still, I cannot enlighten them

Review Of My Mind
Before watching Temple Grandin, I only knew of the little details that we had discussed in class,
and hearing stories of parents whom I know that have a child with autism. In my mind autism was
something small , only knowing a little less than a handful of people that have autism or have
children or family members with autism. With my little knowledge of the prominent disorder , the
image of autism were ones of those which I had heard stories, such as little to no speaking,
continuous routines, limited relationships, and anger. To me this was the definition of autism.
Then the movie completely opened my mind to things that I didn t know. Autism is not the
same all around, every child s disorder is different. Right off the bat, the movie really made my
mind think. When temple is standing in the room and looks very tall, and then moves to the
other side and she gets smaller. I immediately compared it to autism, and how just because the
image appears one way, doesn t mean all images are the same. Just as she was tall and got shorter
the rage of autism varies, and what you see on the outside isn t always what is going on the
inside. This movie made that point very clear. In the begging of the movie, temple goes to live
with her aunt for the summer before she started college to hep her get her mind off of things. You
can see she has a hard time communicating, and needs a routine such as her name on her door so
she knows its her room. And if that norm or routine is

discoveries with the rest of the boys. In a democratic fashion, Ralph gives everyone the freedom

Capital Punishment Debate Summary
A link between the perceptions of people who are considered to be different in local communities
and the rate of Capital Punishment is discussed.
In Dr. Paul Kaplan s lecture, He Never Had a Chance: Capital Defendants in Contexts of Racist
Fear , given at Faylor Hall at 7 p.m. March 30, Kaplan shared some of his thoughts on how Capital
Punishment is viewed in states and why there are higher rates of execution in certain regions of the
United States, specifically in the South. Kaplan studied Capital Punishment cases in Jefferson
County, AL which is in the top 15 of counties outside of Texas for executions. The lecture was
presented by the Alrin M. Adams Center for Law and Society

The example that he gave was the Chinese Government which executes people who did not commit
violent crimes. The exact numbers of executions in China are a closely guarded secret within the
Chinese Government, but it is estimated that there are anywhere from 2,000 to 10,000 executions
annually. Rather the United States is similar to the Japanese Government, which according to
Kaplan, has the option of Capital Punishment available, but rarely uses it.
Dr. Paul Kaplan is a professor at San Diego State University s School of Public Affairs. Before he
became a professor he was a former capital crimes mitigation investigator for the California State
Public Defender. Kaplan studied at the University of California Irvine where he holds a doctoral
degree in Criminology and Socio Legal Studies. He has written numerous publications including
Murder Stories: Ideological Narratives in Capital Punishment.
The lecture was sponsored by Arlin M. Adams Center for Law and Society. The Society was

How Did The Bread Riots Impact The French Revolution
From 1789 to 1799, the Third Estate of France contributed to the French Revolution by participating
in mass riots that would eventually overthrow the harsh segregation of the feudal system known as
the Ancien Regime. The French Revolution was a time when peasant forces allied together to
demolish the harsh segregation of the French rule. The Revolution lasted ten years, six months, and
8 days, which left a permanent mark on France that would leave a paved path for the Napoleonic
Ruling.
Another peasant input to the French Revolution was the Bread Riots. The Bread Riots had a huge
impact of France during the Ancien Regime, and would lead France into times that would forever
impact the culture and history of the country. The Bread Riots were a series of uproars that
occurred during the winter and spring of 1789. The Bread Riots caused the fall of the main French
fortress, The Bastille. The fort was built to be ginormous and to hold armor and imprisoned kings.
The fortress had an impressive total of 8 towers that each reached one hundred feet (thirty meters).
The fall of the mesmerizing fort was the start to the significant revolution that would affect millions.

The Hedge Fund Of Hedge Funds
Hedge funds are generally described as being private investment vehicles for wealthy, private and
secluded investors, prearranged with limited partnership. Partners of most hedge funds dedicate
their personal wealth into the fund to ensure personal interest and dedication to the fund. This
hedge fund structure continues to be a dominant organizational setup in the financial industry.
Albert Wislow Jones is known as the father of hedge funds, creating the first one in 1949 that
used what is known as short long equity strategies and leverage to thrive in the economic world.
He initially raised $100,000 for the fund and $40,000 came out of his own pocket. By short selling

Robertson s strategy was to place high bets on the most promising stocks and short sell what he
thought as the worst possible stocks to invest in. Unfortunately, the ratio between the yen and
USD began to strengthen and Tiger Management was struggling, losing investors quickly. At the
end of the reign of Tiger Management, it was down to only $8 billion in management. After Tiger
had been shut down, all of the traders Robertson had trained went to major hedge funds. Robertson
helped start the career of these traders, known as Tiger Cubs , by providing early investment
money to 40 of the world s biggest hedge funds today.
However, there is a more important hedge fund that almost caused the entire financial system to
fail. Before there was Long Term Capital Management, there was Salomon Brothers. Salomon
Brothers developed the first mortgage backed security. It wasn t until Paul Mozer, a trader at
Salomon Brothers submitted illegal bids for treasury securities by attempting to corner the market
by purchasing more than the 35% allowed per individual transaction. Paul Mozer s supervisor at the
time was John Meriwether, who knew what he had done but let he stay in the firm anyway. Within

Blacks and the Media Essay example
Racism and discrimination continue to be a prevalent problem in American society. Although
minorities have made significant strides toward autonomy and equality, the images in media,
specifically television, continue to misrepresent and manipulate the public opinion of blacks. It is
no longer a blatant practice upheld by the law and celebrated with hangings and beatings, but
instead it is a subtle practice that is perceived in the entertainment and media industries. Whether it
s appearing in disparaging roles or being negatively portrayed in newscasts, blacks continue to be
the victims of an industry that relies on old ideas to appeal to the majority. The viscous cycle that is

In the television show The First 48, which is promoted as being an authentic form of reality
television, the depiction of blacks as criminals is evident. In most cases, it is a black person who
is suspected, accused and arrested for a crime; although, one might argue the show does its job
to follow along with the calls received and crimes reported, the overrepresentation of blacks
relative to the population numbers is evident. Ardis C. Martin, in an Academic Psychiatry
Journal, writes, People develop conceptions about the world as a result of repeated exposure to
consistent and repetitive images in the media. In watching The First 48, it is no surprise why a
white consumer would come to the realization that all blacks are deviant criminals, while a black
consumer would be susceptible to being a criminal because of a media that has already defined
him or her by the color of his or her skin. Black Entertainment Television, which was created to
empower black people in a predominantly white media, has strayed away from its roots and
marketed its programming to mimic and compete with other stations for ratings. As a television
station that once had a variety of journalism programs and shows dedicated to a diversity of music
genres within the black culture, it has now centered its model on reality television and limited
selection of rap music videos. The Encyclopedia of African AmericanHistory states the ascendancy

  • 2. Dubliners Research Paper Dubliners by James Joyce is a collection of stories centered around Joyce s intentions to write the moral history of Dublin s paralysis. Although paralysis seems to be the main theme in Dubliners, another motif comes across in the pages of the stories. As if all of the mental, physical, and emotional problems weren t enough, many of the characters in Dubliners are alcoholics. Joyce utilizes the character of the drunk in many of the stories in Dubliners; hardly a story skips a mention of a drink. The negative effects of alcohol occur again and again through the collection of stories. For the most part, men are brought down by their addiction to alcohol and their inability to control themselves when they are drunk. In Dubliners, the characters seek their own desires, face obstacles that frustrate them, and ultimately give in to their need to consume alcohol. With Dubliners, James Joyce brings attention to the different issues that consuming alcohol caused in early 20th century Ireland using three particular stories; Counterparts , Grace and Ivy Day in the Committee Room .James Joyce was born in the late 1800s in Dublin, Ireland. Joyce came from a big family; he was the eldest of ten children. It is known that Joyce was not raised in a stable household. His father, John, was a known alcoholic and his family did not have much money due to his father s constant spending. Despite the family s continuous financial instability, however, Joyce s father was aware of his son ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Clive: To everyone around the world tuning into this exclusive interview with none other than Christof, we sincerely welcome you all to this special broadcast. Clive: You were willing to capsize him, is that not similar to letting him die. Christof: Similar to a reasonable extent, The Truman Show has become a highly recognized worldwide show, we could not have such an abrupt ending and Truman would have most likely survived. We would have accumulated a procedure, identical to how we saved Truman s father. Even if Truman did die, at least it would increase our show ratings. Clive: Well, I m shocked to be honest, you just said that Truman was like a son to you and yet you were willing to let him die? Christof: Yes, that was true to a reasonable extent, however the chances of him actually dying were minimal. We would have done everything in our power to rescue Truman. • 4. Young Man on Sixth Avenue Young Man on Sixth Avenue In Young Man on Sixth Avenue the author Mark Halliday discusses the significants of the story s symbolism, conflicts with an interpretive point of view, and the overall theme. The young man in the story is a man of confidence, good looks, and youth until years pass and his life seems to not shine as bright in his eyes like his younger years were. He was dependent on his dark blue eyes and charm to get his way with women and in life in general. The man doesn t seem too appreciative of his life as a twenty five year old until those years pass on to this pseudo present when he realizes his life has gone by in the blink of an eye. • 5. How Did Tennessee Williams Use Spectacles In The Glass... When making unrealistic things come to life, it is not the main ideas that make it happen, but the small details. Tennessee Williams, the author of The Glass Menagerie, does a very well job with giving spectacles meaning. He uses the picture of the father in their living room to show how different life would be like without a father figure. Laura s leg brace establishes the fact that being different was not common. He also demonstrated how smoking was very common for men in that given time period. The use of spectacles in The Glass Menagerie gives it a real effect. First, the father of Tom and Laura who left when they were a young age showed how much of a struggle it was to support a familywithout a man. Amanda tried hard to do it on her ... • 7. The Life of Robert E Lee In life we all want to see things as black and white, cut and dry, and easy to understand. This is not the case with Robert E. Lee. He was smart, loyal and above all, complicated. We like to make him out as some old general guy who fought for the South in the Civil War. Eventually lost at Gettysburg and because it was the turning point of the Civil War; he became famous for losing. He is a lot more than just that. He was an actual person who, from his birth up to his death, dealt with real life situations. On January 19, 1807, Robert E. Lee was born in Stratford, Virginia to Henry and Anne Lee. His father was a Revolutionary War hero, nicknamed Light Horse Harry , also being a Major General. Being born in a military family, Robert seemed likely to follow in his father s footsteps. When he was 18, he enrolled into West Point Military Academy where he graduated second in his class in 1829. In 1831, he met and married his wife Mary Anna Randolph Custis, the great granddaughter of George Washington and Martha Washington. They later had seven children: four daughters and three sons. Instead of doing anything combat related he served in the Corps of Engineers, looking over the construction of the United States coastal defenses. However, his service in the Mexican American war in 1846 changed that. Being a member of General Winfield, he made himself stand out, earning three brevets for gallantry and gaining the rank of colonel from the war. After that, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Causes Of Organized Crime In The United States Organized crime, which gained infamous attention in America back in the 1920s during the prohibition era, can be defined as systematical criminal activities that are controlled by a powerful group for profit on a city wide, interstate, and sometimes international scale. These types of organizations engage in illegal activities as a way of generating income, or black money. They structure like a business, freely taking on violence and bribery to preserve their operations and maintain internal and external control. Internal controls provide assurance regarding the achievement of operational objectives (making sure they are effective, efficient, and accurate), while external controls include different resources and contacts (suppliers). Everything they do, from gambling to prostitution to dealing with drugs, goes against all government regulations. But what forces them to commit crimes that are against government regulations and what do they gain personally? How can we stop, or at least lessen the activities of these crimes? Organized Crime is considered a major threat to the development and security of their country. They gain profit through the evaluation of countries risks, benefits, and markets, and have taken to multiple forms of corruption to invade political, economic, and social levels not only in their own country, but in the world. Today, organized crime still poses as a major threat in American society with their illegal operations, especially with the growth of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Porfirio Diaz s Impact On The Country s Material... I argue that Porfirio Diaz made contributions towards his country s material prosperity and pulled Mexico out of it s declining state. Porfirio DГaz is often remembered as a period of social degradation and oppression of freedoms in Mexico. His 35 year dictatorship brought about an immense amount of hardship for the lower classes and an unfair system of wealth distribution. The image of Porfirio DГaz as a ruthless tyrant is one almost everyone has of him post revolutionary Mexico. However, with that being said, what are often overlooked are the giant economic and social benefits that were brought about under his rule. Through massive improvement programs, financial management, and the desire to see law and order, Porfirio DГaz brought much prosperity and stability to Mexico when it needed it most. In this paper, I hope to address how Porfirio Diaz was a horrible leader, but yet still is responsible for the rapid development in Mexico, and the greatest factor of his rapid development was the Mexican railroad transportation facilities. As a result of Diaz s success, railroads encouraged both progression and underdevelopment, which secured Mexico as a state. Leaders of Mexico have been constantly controversial and the presidency of Porfirio Diaz was no exception. His thirty five year term as president (or dictator) converted Mexico into a modern, industrialized state. Although presidency of Diaz has been remembered and criticized for its suppression of rights and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is a form of chemistry practiced in the Middle Ages. The journey of Alchemy takes place in Egypt where the word Khem had been applied in reference to the fertility of the food plains near the Nile. Egyptian beliefs in the hereafter and mummification procedure probably gave rise to rudimentary chemical knowledge and a goal of immortality. • 11. Effects Of Bilingualism On Divergent Thinking Of Adults Effects of Bilingualism on Divergent Thinking of Adults Introduction Literature Review Since the early 20th century numerous studies, in psychology as well as linguistics, have been conducted on the effects of bilingualism on cognitive abilities (Saer, 1923; Smith, 1923; Gowan Torrance, 1965). Until the 1960s there was some consensus among experts about the detrimental effect of bilingualism on cognitive development. However, after the publication of Peal and Lambert s article on the relation of bilingualism to intelligence, most of these theories were discredited due to methodological flaws (Peal Lambert, 1962). A majority of the studies conducted before this period did not take into consideration the differences in age, gender, culture, second language proficiency and socio economic status between the monolingual and bilingual participants. Research conducted thereafter has found largely positive effects of bilingualism on cognitive functions (Landry, 1974; Holtzman, 1980). Recent research in the field has focused on understanding the relationship between bilingualism and specific aspects of cognition, such as inhibitory control, creativity and metalinguistic awareness, as opposed to the earlier studies which tried to associate bilingualism with intelligence. Even though, most studies have found a positive correlation between bilingual proficiency and cognitive benefits, there is still much debate in this area of research (Leikin, 2012). One can understand the values that shape and mold their society, such as faith and wisdom. It would not be an exaggeration to state that the Islamic society is based around these traits and are seen as crucial for survival. These traits are a major factor on how males and females are portrayed in The Arabian Nights. Women may either be portrayed as a possession of the male or the male under the influence of the female or the male is portrayed as a gullible fool. Such varieties of portrayals depend on the situation of the story. In the Arabian Nights one can see different aspects of faith in Islamic society. This is due to the importance that faith has... However, the cruel actions that lead up to the massacre in Nanjing started on August 15, where the Japanese Navy send planes that flew over Nanjing and released bombs. From that day, all the way until December 13 (when Nanjing fell), it was estimated that more than 50 missions flew over Nanjing, using more than 800 planes and around 160 tons of bombs. An attack that was reported on August 27 said that within a time period of two hours, 400 500 houses were destroyed and over one hundred people were killed, with several hundred people injured. These actions planted the seed of fear in the Chinese civilians, which grew stronger daily with the bombing attacks. Soon people begin to evacuate, and the population of Nanjing dropped from more than a million to half a million. The Japanese troops entered Nanjing on December 7, and launched a massive attack on Nanjing, which caused the Chinese troops to retreat to the opposite side of the Yangtze River on December 12. On following day of the retreat, the Japanese s 6th and 16th division entered Nanjing, with an addition of two more Japanese Fleets. With this, the Nanjing Massacre begun. Within the next seven weeks, the Japanese destroyed everything that was in sight, looting and burning property. It was estimated that more than 300,000 Chinese died during the ... Fluorine, the 13th most abundant element in the earth s crust, is never encountered in its free state in nature. It exists only in combination with other elements as a fluoride compound. Fluoride is effective in preventing and reversing the early signs of tooth decay. Researchers have shown that there are several ways through which fluoride achieves its decay preventive effects. It makes the tooth structure stronger, so teeth are more resistant to acid attacks. Acid is formed when the bacteria in plaque break down sugars and carbohydrates from the diet. With the 1995 enactment of Assembly Bill 733 in California, ten states and territories in the United States now mandate fluoridation through legislation. Besides California, these include seven other states (Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio and South Dakota), as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Three states (South Dakota, Rhode Island and Kentucky), as well as the District of Columbia, have achieved the ultimate success with 100 percent of their treatable community water systems providing the benefits of fluoridation to their citizens. While safety has been an issue frequently raised by those opposed to fluoridation, scientific data from peer reviewed clinical research provide overwhelming evidence that the adjustment of fluoride levels in drinking water to the optimal level is undoubtedly safe. Hundreds of studies on fluoride metabolism have tracked the outcomes of ingested fluoride. Ingested fluoride essentially travels three metabolic pathways. It is either excreted by the kidneys, absorbed by the teeth or taken up in the skeleton. At optimal levels fluoride has never been demonstrated to cause skeletal fluorosis or other bone problems. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... People are going hungry because of poverty, not because of a shortage of food (Silverbush, 2012). The problems arising from factory farms are only getting bigger and more disastrous to the environment. These farms raise hundreds or thousands of animals in close confinement; otherwise know as concentrated animal feeding operations or CAFOs. Large CAFOs are controlled under federal and state pollution regulations because they produce massive quantities of animal waste that can pose environmental and heath hazards if mishandled (Weeks, 3). So why would farmers be farming this way it is so dangerous? The answer is simple; these farms can produce large quantities of food cheaply. If a farm can produce more hogs or calves, its profit is larger. In order for farmers to stay on their land, they are forced into poorly paid off farm employment (Food). Livestock farmers are told that they must adopt the new industrial technologies that make CAFO s feasible, if they expect to have a future in farming (Kallen, 64). The byproducts of such farms are producing harmful odors. The runoff from these farms pollutes streams and groundwater with antibiotics, insecticides, pathogens and emits poisonous gases that are hazardous and create offensive odors (Weeks, 2). The question now becomes, is factory farmingthe only way out? Is an industrial approach to agriculture needed to feed the poor and hungry of the world? The answer ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Why We Should Be Heading Towards Space Exploration Why We Should Be Heading Towards Space Space exploration is something that has intrigued mankind ever since science fiction writers of old sparked the imagination of the people. Since then, we have made leaps and bounds towards space travel with landing people on the moon, sending satellites to Saturn, the photos from the Hubble Telescope and the rover, Curiosity, on Mars. These advances have provided information that will prove to be beyond measure. While the cost of such information has been high, the benefits of the information has been irrefutable. Ultimately, this information goes to support not only further exploration of space, but also towards technologies that will benefit Earth directly. Two such projects deal primarily with solar power and nuclear waste disposal. Both of these industries would benefit immensely from such a service and would also generate the need for many space flights (Coopersmith, 2012). According to Coopersmith (2012), Space based solar power (SBSP) promises gigawatts of electric power with minimum environmental damage. Example like this go to show that the inventions and benefits realized through space exploration reach far beyond the cosmos and into the everyday lives of people. The first thing people noticed about the proposed budget was that it was 96 billion dollars. On the other hand, King Henry IV is haunted by a sense of guilt that is translated to a feeling of suspicion towards his own son. The source of this guilt is his usurping of the throne and, in a way or another, being a participant in the killing of Richard II, if not by giving the orders at least by turning a blind eye to it. King Henry IV unconsciously harbors a belief that God will punish him for doing this through his son. However, with each year modern society is growing, improving, drastically changing. 18 year olds in the U.S. are capable of voting, working full time, engaging in marriage, and are thought of as completely responsible for their actions as they are legally adults, so why are they incapable of being responsible enough to consume alcohol? Underage drinking has been occurring since laws were set in place for age qualifications, but it is better serving American society by continuing it because we can t accept lowering the national age? Ruth C. Engs, a professor for Applied Health Sciences at Indiana University, finds that the mandated drinking age should be lowered to 18 or 19. If young adults were legally allowed to drink in controlled environments, then responsible drinking methods could be taught, resulting in mature behavior when consuming alcohol (Engs, 1). By keeping the drinking age so high, students or young adults are forced to hide drinking and more often than not, turn to binge drinking, an unhealthy, addictive, and extremely dangerous form of drinking that often results in blackouts and alcohol poisoning. Engs states, For example, 22% of all students under 21 compared to 18% over 21 years of age are heavy drinkers. This is not the only issue that arises from underage drinking. Newsweek writer, Jeffrey A. Tucker, sees that this law is only causing over indulgence, anti social behavior, disrespect for the law, secrecy and sneaking and a massive diversion of human energy. To diminish these issues, people are turning towards the examples of other nations that have managed to maintain low drinking age laws, with low risk results. It does not have any good start, ending as well as middle. Just because of this the unity of action with the chain of effect and cause is badly interrupted. But the reality is contrary to this, no doubt the unity of action is there and the middle portion of the play is the most essential part of the play. Plot of doctor Faustus: As Aristotle has given the idea of a good play. It should have a proper beginning, a middle and an end. But Doctor Faustus does not follow these rules. Motion Picture Industry Essay Motion Picture Industry Data is important and a main stream form of communication throughout the world; however, without being able to represent the data in a format that is easily understandable, then the data will not be as useful. At the end of the 10 minute period, I will replay the sound and repeat the process 5 more times. • 38. Female Convicts As A Subject Of Historical Discussion There has been a lack of interest in female convicts as a subject of historical discussion. The history of female convicts has traditionally been incorporated into the framework of male convicts with grave reference to the male convict experience. The convict women who were transported to Australia on ships Elizabeth 5th and Henry Wellesley in 1836 faced extreme difficulty in achieving freedom and reputability. It is the view of many historians that women were incorporated into a pattern initially designed to accommodate men . This essay will investigate the origins and characteristics of a sample of 10 female convicts arriving to Sydney in1836. The essay aims to establish an alternative impression of the female convicts that were deemed damned whores, skill less and prostitutes. In agreement with the 4 of the 5 studied historians, I hold the view that the women were the victims of a repressive patriarchal society and the appellation of female convicts as damned whores is totally inadequate. I believe they were not members of a professional criminal class; they were humans with basic human needs, doing anything they could to survive. The female convicts exported to Australia have been the subjects of investigation since transportation commenced. Many historians set out to determine whether the female convicts were vicious criminals or innocent victims . Although most tend to go back and forth these two energies on a daily basis depending on the environment we find ourselves in, Jung believed that we feel most comfortable in one of these worlds over the other. In addition to being either more extraverted or introverted, Jung theorized that these alone could not account for behavioral differences he observed in people. Therefore, he identified two opposite mental functions in which we use to take in information.
