Examine your faith
1.
2. •An interesting account of faith (Luke 5:1-6).
•Will Peter have a subjective faith or an objective
faith?
Subjective faith: comes from a person who
considers something in his own mind and decides
based upon his own consideration if it is
acceptable or not.
Objective faith: is founded on absolute trust in
something outside of one’s self.
3. • Subjective: Namaan the leper (2 Kings 5:1-14).
God’s word was, “Dip in the Jordan 7 times”.
This was totally unreasonable in his mind.
• Objective: Moses and Israel (Num. 21:1-9).
God’s word was, “Make a snake and put it on a pole.”
This would be totally unreasonable to the human mind.
Nevertheless, they obeyed God.
4. • People not believing the Genesis account of
creation (Gen. 1-3).
• People believing that sex outside of the marriage
relationship is ok (Heb. 13:4; 1 Cor. 6:9).
• The idea that truly “good people” who aren’t
Christians will go to heaven (Matt. 7:21-23).
5. •The motto of the day is “Serve God on your own
terms, not His.”
• The problem: our thoughts are not His thoughts
(Is. 55:8-9).
• We must make a decision: is the Bible God’s
word or is it not?
6. • An objective faith is properly directed (Lk. 5:5).
Examined the evidenced/verified that Jesus is God.
Because I believe in Jesus I believe…
The creation account (Matt. 19:3-5).
Noah and the flood (Matt. 24:37-39).
Jonah and the great fish (Matt: 12:40).
The whole of the Old Testament (Luke 24:44).
7. • An objective faith is grounded in humility
(Lk. 5:5).
Peter was a professional fisherman, and, therefore,
going back out went against everything he knew.
This is one of the most difficult things for man to do
today because we think we are so intelligent.
Faith says, “Nevertheless, I will do what you say”
8. • An objective faith is willing to be made a fool in
the eyes of the world (Lk. 5:5).
A common bystander who overheard this
conversation would have thought Peter was a fool.
In the same way, if we take Jesus at His word, we too
will be looked upon as fools by the world.
Such has always been the case (1 Cor. 4:9-10).
9. I will believe and do whatever Jesus has said and
authorized to be said.
I will do whatever he asks me to do without filtering
through my own intellect.
In humility I will deny myself of my own wisdom
and experience and be willing to be made a fool in the
eyes of the world in order to follow Jesus.
