This document describes a campaign and project to help ex-Kamaiya families in Nepal. The campaign aims to provide upgraded housing, sanitation facilities, water access, and livelihood training to families living in vulnerable conditions. It will target villages in Bijaynagar, Tikapur. Families there currently live in unstable thatched houses with no running water or toilets. The rainy season makes sleeping difficult. The project will construct new houses, install latrines and tube wells, and provide hygiene education and small business grants. Supporters will sponsor clusters of families for $500 to improve living conditions. Stories from two families illustrate their current hardships of poverty and inadequate housing.

2. Background
Ex-‐Kamaiyas
• A form of slavery which existed in Nepal for over half a century. Under this system, th
ousands of poor Nepalese worked as bonded labourers (without remuneration) to rep
ay loans owed by their ancestors.
• The government of Nepal declared the Kamaiya free in mid 2000. Over 20,000 house
holds received allocations of land from the government; however, much of this land is
either barren, disaster prone or poorly connected to essential facilities. Promises of ot
her assistance remain unfulfilled.
• Ex bonded labourer live on camp like structure(Cluster) of 80 families, 120 families an
d 200 families. We can replicate this model to any settlements depending on the avail
ability of resources. More than 24,000 families are on same desperate situation.
