Evidence-Based Practice and the Quadruple Aim
Evidence-based practice (EBP) and the quadruple aim both help to create improved healthcare equality, improve patient outcomes, reduce hospital cost, and improve the work life of clinicians (Malnyk, Gallagher-Ford, & Fineout-Overholt, 2016). EBP is a problem-solving approach that provides the best evidence to inform nursing practice and help to provide the best patient outcomes (Melnyk & Fine-Overhold, 2018). The quadruple aim consists of improving each patient’s experience of care, improving health population, reducing the per capita cost of healthcare, and improving the lives of the healthcare workforce (Sikka, Morath, & Leape, 2015). It is essential that both the quadruple aim and EBP are equally implemented to achieve the desired outcomes due to the fact that one cannot be fully achieved without the other.
EBP can help reach the Quadruple Aim in all four measures, which are patient experience, population health, cost, and work life of healthcare providers. The patient experience is enhanced when utilizing EBP into care delivery and decisions made by healthcare providers. For example, in my healthcare organization, we perform hourly rounding on every patient, which is backed by EBP to improve the patient experience. Integrating the best available evidence to support decisions in order to strengthen the patient’s quality and safety of the patient experience is optimized by EBP (Lavenberg et al., 2019).
Population health is driven by EBP in order to address population characteristics, needs, values, and preferences (Jacobs, Jones, Gabella, Springs, & Brownson, 2012). For example, heart failure, diabetes, and obesity have become an epidemic. Understanding and using EBP to approach new ways in helping the population who suffer from these comorbidities will help reach the Quadruple Aim. Implementing EBP approach in population health goals to develop easily accessible and time-efficient tools to improve population health will serve as a driver for success (Jacobs et al., 2012). Addressing the population health issues will ultimately affect cost measures by reducing hospitalizations, fewer test, and fewer doctor visits. EBP is proven to improve patient outcomes, which in turn, results in cost-effective care (Hrabe, 2017). Therefore, EBP helps to reach costs measures needed to reach the Quadruple Aim.
The fourth goal of the Quadruple Aim is essential to be able to meet the first three measures. The work life of healthcare providers can have a positive or negative impact on patient outcomes. Healthcare providers are experiencing burnout, increased stress, and depression, all of which are associated with decreased patient satisfaction, poor health outcomes, and increased cost (Bodenheimer & Sinsky, 2014). This presentation discusses a quality improvement project aimed at implementing bedside shift reporting. Data was collected and findings showed that nurses were not performing bedside shift reporting or getting to see patients in a timely manner. This increases fall risk, medication errors, and decreases patient, nurse, and physician satisfaction. Root causes identified included a lack of interest and a culture of noncompliance. Evidence supports the benefits of bedside shift reporting for improved satisfaction and safety. A timeline is proposed to educate staff, implement the change, monitor outcomes, and celebrate results. Tools are available from AHRQ to assist with successful implementation.

Lean is one of the most internationally popular process improvement methodologies around the world. Similarly, person-centred approaches have risen in popularity since the millennium with political and policy intentions now widely advocating that person-centredness should be at the heart of the health system. In this webinar, we discuss the first research internationally into the combined use of Lean and person-centred improvement approaches, lessons learnt, and how to be a person-centred improver in any industry or setting.

Seán Paul Teeling is the Programme Director for the Professional Certificate and Graduate Certificate in Process Improvement in Health Systems at UCD Health Systems. Prior to this, he worked as Lean Manager at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital Dublin, working closely with the Hospital and the UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Systems on the development of the highly successful Process Improvement in healthcare programmes.
Seán Paul is an accredited facilitator of Person-centred Cultures in Healthcare. He completed his PhD with and is a member of, and honorary lecturer with, the Centre for Person-Centred Practice Research, Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh. He is also an affiliate of the Stanford Medicine Centre for Improvement, Stanford University, CA. His research is in the use of process and quality improvement methodologies in healthcare including the Model for Improvement, Lean, Six Sigma, Lean Six Sigma and Agile and in particular the influence and contribution of Process Improvement methodologies on Person-centred Cultures. In January 2011, he was appointed by the Minister for Health as a member of the Health Products Regulatory Authority Advisory Committee on Medical Devices, on which he served for two terms.

As a health care provider, Aurora Health Care, helps people to live well, providing the best care possible during and after a patient’s hospitalization. They support and encourage their medical/oncology nurses to become oncology and chemotherapy certified. They provide annual mandatory cancer education and offer monthly oncology seminars for all health care providers. The also encourage and support local, state and national seminars as well for their nurses. Maximum efforts has been put to eliminate traditional way of doing things and embrace new methodologies (Saunders, Vehviläinen-Julkunen & Stevens, 2016). Concerns have been raised towards improving knowledge and skills in respect to evidence for efficient clinical outcome. Lack of EBP knowledge has bring a lot of challenges in our organization thus hindering its implemented. This has influenced integration of sources of evidence in clinical decision making where clinical expertise, clinical context, patients outcomes and values as well as best research are included in the process of decision-making.
There is increased demand to create culture that promotes exploration of critical inquiry and availability of evidence as an important aspect to be incorporated in our daily nursing practice in the organization. Clinical inquiry in nursing follows five EBP processes including ask, gather, appraise, act, evaluate and disseminate. Learning these steps helps to support the capacity of nurses. According to Mick (2017), the first process to clinical inquiry is developing a clinical question, followed by gathering and evaluating evidence obtained. After finding a satisfactory evidence, actions should be taken for its implementation and dissemination and examining outcome.

As discussed in week one, the significance of evidence-based practice (EBP) in providing safe and quality health care cannot be relegated. In fact, EBP has been endorsed in research and practice as a method that obtains the highest level of care for patients, reduces the cost of health care, reduces medical errors and injuries, and encourages individual and professional advancement for nurses and other health professionals because it encourages research and educational progression. Accordingly, Black et al (2015) concluded that providing research training opportunities to nurses is a worthwhile strategy for health care facilities seeking to promote EBP for the purpose of empowering nurses and consistently ensuring safe and quality health care.
Studies have shown that several issues or factors are implicated in achieving evidence-based nursing practice (e. g. Mahmoud and Abdelrasol, 2019; Solomons and Spross, 2011). Some of these factors include inadequate time to read literature, intense workload, shortage of staff qualified in EBP, and shortage of nursing faculties to inculcate the knowledge of EBP in nurses. Evidence-based practice (EBP) and the quadruple aim both help to create improved healthcare equality, improve patient outcomes, reduce hospital cost, and improve the work life of clinicians (Malnyk, Gallagher-Ford, & Fineout-Overholt, 2016). EBP is a problem-solving approach that provides the best evidence to inform nursing practice and help to provide the best patient outcomes (Melnyk & Fine-Overhold, 2018). The quadruple aim consists of improving each patient’s experience of care, improving health population, reducing the per capita cost of healthcare, and improving the lives of the healthcare workforce (Sikka, Morath, & Leape, 2015). It is essential that both the quadruple aim and EBP are equally implemented to achieve the desired outcomes due to the fact that one cannot be fully achieved without the other.
EBP can help reach the Quadruple Aim in all four measures, which are patient experience, population health, cost, and work life of healthcare providers. The patient experience is enhanced when utilizing EBP into care delivery and decisions made by healthcare providers. For example, in my healthcare organization, we perform hourly rounding on every patient, which is backed by EBP to improve the patient experience. Integrating the best available evidence to support decisions in order to strengthen the patient’s quality and safety of the patient experience is optimized by EBP (Lavenberg et al., 2019).
Population health is driven by EBP in order to address population characteristics, needs, values, and preferences (Jacobs, Jones, Gabella, Springs, & Brownson, 2012). For example, heart failure, diabetes, and obesity have become an epidemic. Understanding and using EBP to approach new ways in helping the population who suffer from these comorbidities will help reach the Quadruple Aim. Implementing EBP approach in population health goals to develop easily accessible and time-efficient tools to improve population health will serve as a driver for success (Jacobs et al., 2012). Addressing the population health issues will ultimately affect cost measures by reducing hospitalizations, fewer test, and fewer doctor visits. EBP is proven to improve patient outcomes, which in turn, results in cost-effective care (Hrabe, 2017). Therefore, EBP helps to reach costs measures needed to reach the Quadruple Aim.
The fourth goal of the Quadruple Aim is essential to be able to meet the first three measures. The work life of healthcare providers can have a positive or negative impact on patient outcomes. Healthcare providers are experiencing burnout, increased stress, and depression, all of which are associated with decreased patient satisfaction, poor health outcomes, and increased cost (Bodenheimer & Sinsky, 2014). Evidence supports the benefits of bedside shift reporting for improved satisfaction and safety. A timeline is proposed to educate staff, implement the change, monitor outcomes, and celebrate results. Seán Paul is an accredited facilitator of Person-centred Cultures in Healthcare. He completed his PhD with and is a member of, and honorary lecturer with, the Centre for Person-Centred Practice Research, Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh. He is also an affiliate of the Stanford Medicine Centre for Improvement, Stanford University, CA. EBP Bedside Handoff and Patient Satisfaction
This document summarizes evidence on the impact of bedside nursing handoffs on patient satisfaction. It finds that 9 out of 10 studies reported increased patient satisfaction when bedside handoffs were implemented instead of handoffs outside the patient room. Bedside handoffs also improved nurse satisfaction in some studies and reduced handoff time in others, though the type of handoff tool used did not impact outcomes. Successful implementation of bedside handoffs depended on leadership strategy across all studies.

Perhaps it was inevitable that Pope Francis’ comments on the Church’s position on scientific theories such as the Big Bang and evolution would cause a stir. In his address to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, the Pope cautioned against the image of God the creator as “a magician, with a magic wand”, arguing that belief in both theories around the beginnings of the universe and the birth of humankind are consistent with the Catholic faith.
“The Big Bang, which is today posited as the origin of the world, does not contradict the divine act of creation; rather, it requires it”, he stated. Similarly, he argued, “evolution of nature is not inconsistent with the notion of creation because evolution pre-supposes the creation of beings which evolve.”
Yet despite further murmurings that Pope Francis was beginning (yet another) revolution in Catholic doctrine, it must be pointed out – the Pope’s declaration on either theory has not broken with established Catholic belief in the slightest.

First, Millon (1969) wrote less pathological versions of personality disorders of
theDSM–II,creating “personality patterns of mild severity” (p. 220). In each case,
he set his descriptions to characterize three elements for each of the eight personal-
ity patterns: behaviors, self-perceptions, and intrapsychic processes.
Second, Millon fit his personality prototypes into a logical and coherent clas-
sification scheme. To organize the eight personality prototypes, Millon focused
on the kind of interpersonal relationships that the individual typically established
and the mode with which the person achieved his or her accommodation with

Introduction
All species of living organisms—from the bacteria on our skin, to the trees in our yards, to the birds outside—evolved at some point from a different species. Although it may seem that living things today stay much the same from generation to generation, that is not the case: evolution is ongoing. Evolution is the process through which the characteristics of species change and through which new species arise.
The theory of evolution is the unifying theory of biology, meaning it is the framework within which biologists ask questions about the living world. Its power is that it provides direction for predictions about living things that are borne out in experiment after experiment. The Ukrainian-born American geneticist Theodosius Dobzhansky famously wrote that "nothing makes sense in biology except in the light of evolution" (Dobzhansky 1964, 449). He meant that the principle that all life has evolved and diversified from a common ancestor is the foundation from which we understand all other questions in biology. This chapter will explain some of the mechanisms for evolutionary change and the kinds of questions that biologists can and have answered using evolutionary theory.
Discovering How Populations Change

The theory of evolution by natural selection describes a mechanism for species change over time. That species change had been suggested and debated well before Darwin. The view that species were static and unchanging was grounded in the writings of Plato, yet there were also ancient Greeks that expressed evolutionary ideas.
In the eighteenth century, ideas about the evolution of animals were reintroduced by the naturalist Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon and even by Charles Darwin’s grandfather, Erasmus Darwin. During this time, it was also accepted that there were extinct species. At the same time, James Hutton, the Scottish naturalist, proposed that geological change occurred gradually by the accumulation of small changes from pr.
