                                    How effective is the combination of your main product and
                                    ancillary texts?

                                    With creating a Music video with a magazine advert and digipack for Tom Cox, it was important to have a
                                    connecting theme between them all. After finishing my video I started creating my digipack and magazine
                                    advertisement. Whilst working on each product, keeping a theme and link with each of the three was vital.



                                    From looking at both of the ancillary texts, you can identify the connection between the two via the usage of
                                    a image. This image is of a cigarette burnt out on a saucepan with Tom Cox written around it. I applied this
                                    to both of my products. Main reason being it is the identity for Tom’s new single which is his first; therefore
                                    I felt the repetition of image was needed so it’s constantly memorized by customers in stores and reading
                                    magazines. This image would associate the customer and public with Tom Cox’s name and his new album.
                                    I did not want to give Tom a logo or style, keeping it plain and original gives the customer the simplicity of
                                    Tom’s music. Connecting this image with the song and video is subtle but connected. With the burnt out
                                    cigarette is connecting Jack in the first scene who is smoking. This can be connected to his frustration with
                                    Mary, his way of being connected with Mary and his desperation for Mary. The cigarette is lying in a saucer;
                                    this connects the character of Mary to the image, for it symbolizes Mary’s struggle and poverty. The idea of
                                    using anything around the house to put out your cigarette symbolizes lack of care and respect for your
                                    house. In Mary’s case she has no aim in life and her addiction for drugs controls her. Another point which
                                    occurs in all three products is the idea of burning life away. The cigarette acts as a symbol for life and how it
                                    will burn till the end and it’s up to you whether you wish to waste it or not. This connects Try Again with
                                    each piece through its lyrics and emotions passed by Tom. Isolation also features within each of the
                                    products with Mary on her own and the magazine advert just being the image nothing else.



                                     I wanted to keep Tom out of the products as I wanted people to look him up online to become closer to

                                    his work. I did however use an image of Tom at a live gig on the digipack, giving the target audience a
                                    chance to observe Tom and his style and characteristics. Although at the same time its keeping them in the
                                    dark as a picture is only a taste of the artist and this idea hopefully would encourage the target audience
                                    research him more and purchase more of his music to get a better idea of toms work and a better idea of
                                    Tom as an artist. The usage of social network on my magazine advert allows that interaction between the
                                    audience and the artist.



                                    Enigma (Ronald Barthes) was a key to keeping the feature of narrative-based video throughout the products.
                                    Keeping the design and theme connected throughout different media’s of a specific product, this is called
                                    ‘Symbiotic’. The Writing used on the digipack and the magazine advert were the same. Allowing the smaller

details to become connected and relate to each other, which customers may notice and relate the
connection with the music video also.

Looking at all three products in relation of effectiveness, I feel my work has been successful. The
connection between the three products, including theme, design and images, were all there. Looking at the
products as a customer, the interesting image and font would encourage me to look more into this product
and the artist. The message this song sends will hopefully be mirrored via the video and image created and
understood by the audience. Only then will they be able to identify the reoccurring theme and message
throughout the products. Connecting themselves to this message will help them understand the artist as well.
This was not a theme to identify the artist but to identify the song and hopefully will encourage customers to
purchase this product and follow this artist.

  • 3. details to become connected and relate to each other, which customers may notice and relate the connection with the music video also. Looking at all three products in relation of effectiveness, I feel my work has been successful. The connection between the three products, including theme, design and images, were all there. Looking at the products as a customer, the interesting image and font would encourage me to look more into this product and the artist. The message this song sends will hopefully be mirrored via the video and image created and understood by the audience. Only then will they be able to identify the reoccurring theme and message throughout the products. Connecting themselves to this message will help them understand the artist as well. This was not a theme to identify the artist but to identify the song and hopefully will encourage customers to purchase this product and follow this artist. Evaulation Question 2 | 4/30/2012 2
