7) Looking back at your preliminary task,
what do you feel you have learnt in the
progression from it to your full production?
The first task we were given to do was In our groups we was set to complete a Continuity Task
involving filming and editing a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a
chair opposite another character and speaking a couple of lines. The clip was meant to show a
reverse shot and the 180 degree role. In our shot clip we changed it up. We successfully showed
the 180 degree role, a character opening a door and dialogue. However we wanted to do
something different we didn't have them sit down. We managed to do a chasing scene to tell a
short story. We filmed with a Panasonic camera and edited our clip on final cut pro. This was the
first time we all got the chance to use the software. We leant how to add music and cut clips
and edit properly. Because of this we learnt new skills and it showed in our final opening
sequence, making the final video a better quality. We almost mirrored some shots to our final
video for example close ups of Danielle and the low angle cow boy shot.
In the preliminary task we used a various amount of shots which we used in our final opening
sequence. Some were Close ups, Cowboy shot and High angles. We used all three of these in
our preliminary task and more like Mid shots, Long shots, Over the shoulder and Zooms. The
opening sequence was edited at a higher quality than our preliminary task. We added two
songs, sound effects and changed the colour of the clips to create continuity to the separate
clips. We used a tripod more in the preliminary task because it fitted better however we liked
the hand held look for our Opening sequence. The hand held look made it more intense and you
feel like you are in the video with the POV view and you have a sense that you are following the
victim.
The lighting in the Preliminary task was artificial and yellow. The lighting was not thought about
in the first task because it was a small task. However in the opening sequence we used the
natural outside lighting to create realism to the video. And we show many types of lighting in
one video. As the victim was being chased its getting darker. When she is murdered its dark to
fit the stereotypical feel of a dramatic clip. The dark setting connects with the dark ending to
Danielle's life. Props we used were a fake gun make real by adding a gun shot sound effect. We
obtained fake blood and police tape. These props make the story feel more real. The outfits
were easy. We got the girls to dress like typical sixth form students. The killer looked not
menacing to trick the audience that looks can be deceiving.
After all we think our Opening Sequence turned out
great. We showed many angles which proves our
understanding of the impotence of them. Having
many shots keeps the sequence fresh and interesting.
We have really progressed from the short video
created a few months earlier. We think that we have
created something that would appeal to our target
audience and please them. Relatable characters draws
in our young viewers. Going through many trial shots
we finally found the perfect ones to make the
sequence run smoothly.
