Evaluation question 6
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of
constructing this product?
In the process of making our opening sequence we all had to learn how
to use a number of different technologies
Youtube
As a teenager I have general knowledge about
Youtube, however before creating ‘Emily’ had
no experience with making an account or
uploading videos. As a group we created a
Facebook page ‘Quantum Productions’ where
we uploaded our first draft and final cut. We
used Youtube not just to market our Thriller, but
to grasp what our audience’s opinions were. We
also used Youtube as a guide to find editing
tutorials to use on After Effects.
Feedback we received via Youtube
Google Mail and Google Drive
My group and I decided to create a Google Mail account and to
use Google Drive to share ideas, resources and stay in contact at
all times. Because I didn’t have a Google account before I had to
learn through basic trial and error, and through Anita- a fellow
member of my group who helped me.
Weebly
Weebly is the blog website required for us to upload all of our work to. Again,
for somebody who has no previous experience with blogging I was worried I
would be at a disadvantage however Weebly turned out to be very easy to use
and pick up. The only thing I had to seek help for was embedding media, which
was shown to me by a fellow student. Although I picked up how to use Weebly
fairly easy, technology can be unreliable at times- which I learned along the way.
Half way through production of ‘Emily’ I experienced technical difficulties with
my blog account which could not be resolved for weeks. Eventually, after
various attempts to fix it I resorted to copying all of my work onto a word
document before deleting the account and starting a fresh. The hardest difficulty
technology wise throughout production was definitely the difficulty I
experienced with my blog, but luckily after hard work I managed to catch up and
get my blog back on track.
Prezi
Prezi is one of the many media formats I used when putting together my
research and planning for my thriller. Prezi is a website for creating unique
and individual presentations. Luckily, I had some previous experience
beforehand with using Prezi; I used my experience to help others in my
group and class who had no experience with the website. As mentioned
before, I did need to be shown how to embed a Prezi presentation onto my
Weebly account, which is something I am fully confident with now.
Twitter and Facebook
Being a teenager in the twenty-first century I am confident with using social networking sites like Facebook and
Twitter. I used the knowledge I held to create a Facebook page and Twitter account for Quantum Productions.
Having a Facebook page allowed us to market our product to millions of people without having to spend a
penny. Facebook allows the audience to like our page to keep up-to-date with Quantum Productions and allows
them to share our page or posts to their friends subsequently carrying out our marketing for us. Similarly with
Twitter our audience could follow us, retweet and favourite any of our tweets. We also used Facebook to create
a group chat between our group in order to stay in contact and discuss ideas outside of lessons.
Camera and Tripod
When filming for ‘Emily’ we used the camera equipment
supplied from school. The difficulties with this were that a
limited amount of cameras and tripods were used between
over thirty students. From our continuity task at the
beginning of the course my group learned the hard way that
after filming footage the best thing to do is transfer the clips
off of the camera, as we lost all of our original clips for the
continuity task. So we ensured we had all clips saved
properly onto a computer and made a note of which camera
number we used when filming our opening sequence. The
camera we used was a Panasonic SDR H85, a decent model
which did the job. We quickly had to come to terms that our
production values wouldn’t be great for ‘Emily’ due to a lack
of resources (for example, a crane) and not excellent camera
quality.
After Effects
After Effects is an editing programme which
we used when editing ‘Emily’. After Effects
is fairly complicated to use and takes time to
get used to. After trial and error we
eventually learned how to use it for basic
stuff. When we decided to add a CCTV
effect on Emily in the bathroom and corridor
scenes we took to Youtube to find a suitable
tutorial. We used After Effects for various
things like fade transitions, ghosting and
slow motion effects.
