How does your media product represent particular social groups
Gender Representation One of our main characters is a female, named Lisa. She is portrayed towards the audience in a traditional way as a female in a Rom-com/Teen movie. This is because she displays the common traditional feminin emotions of being in love with a boy. This is the dominant ideology of how females are in society and in our film opening. For instance, we did not represent Owen as a character who is in love with Sara and very preoccupied with a female counterpart because this is not the traditional representation of males in teen movies. We wanted to be more traditional in our gender representation of characters.
Owen is represented as the traditional ‘Prince Charming’ of Rom-Coms/Teen movies. For instance, he is the male that the girl goes crazy in love for. We established this to the audience as Sara quotes ‘....gazing at this one boy. Owen!’ This quote establishes Sara’s preoccupation with Owen. Also this represents the male character as the ‘prize winner’. As the ideology here is that if Lisa achieves getting Owen she has accomplished something big. The ideology represented in our film opening of males is that he takes care of his counterpart. For instance, there is the scene where he quickly runs over to Sara to assist her when she drops her books.
Age Representation The age representation of those in our film are teenagers. There are many stereotypes of teens that are represented in the media. These stereotypes are sometimes positive but at times negative. For instance, the TV drama Skins portrays teens in a negative light by promoting the ideology that teens are heavily involved in alcohol, drugs, sex etc. However, our representation of teens is more positive. For instance, nothing but good is mentioned in our voiceover. Lisa states that ‘I spend my school life doing extra school work’
Our age representation of teenagers is therefore proven to be positive because we represented Lisa as a character who breaks those negative stereotypes of teens. Also we did this for Owen. Owen was described as being ‘so hard working’. These comments suggest to the audience the good image of both characters in the opening.
