The document discusses various elements that are commonly seen in pop music videos with romantic narratives, including props, characters, composition, and ancillary materials. It analyzes the creative choices made for these elements in the author's own music video. Props were used to depict the progression of the romantic relationship between two central characters. While many music videos only focus on the couple, some scenes in the author's video included other people to show their social life. Shots alternated between centering the characters and challenging conventions. The ancillary materials focused only on the artist without props for clarity. Examples are provided of other artists' music videos that use similar or different techniques.

Romantic Relationship Props in Music Videos
1.
2. PROPS
• IN POP MUSIC VIDEOS, WITH A ROMANTIC NARRATIVE, THERE WILL BE PROPS ASSOCIATED WITH THE ROMANTIC
RELATIONSHIP. THIS IS TO LET THE AUDIENCE UNDERSTAND THAT IT IS BASED AROUND A COUPLE PROGRESSING
THROUGHOUT MANY DIFFERENT EVENTS. ONE MAIN PART OF THIS WAS THE SCENES ABOUT WHERE THEY FIRST MET IN
THE COFFEE SHOP AND THEY WERE TALKING AND FINDING OUT ABOUT EACH OTHER . WE USED THIS STEREOTYPE IN OUR
VIDEO SO IT SHOWS THEIR ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIP TO THE AUDIENCE AND TO DEVELOP A RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN
THEM.
A music video that is similar to this is Michael Bubles Music video for his song
"Haven't met you yet" where they have a coffee on top of the refrigerators and they
use similar props between both our video and Michael Bubles video. For example, The
use of the coffee cups within outs and theirs . However, we have a lot of differences
between both music videos. Such as a calendar to show the progression of the
relationship, The use of any romantic props isn't as strong in Michael Bubles video
compared to ours however they use confetti, supermarket goods and trollies.
However, they also look into a similar bed scene where they're shown on a bed
hugging.
3. CHARACTERS• IT IS OFTEN THE CASE THAT IN POP MUSIC VIDEOS RELATED TO ROMANCE IT WILL ONLY BE
FOCUSED ON TWO PEOPLE SO THIS WILL MAKE SURE THAT THE AUDIENCE KNOWS THAT IT IS
BETWEEN THEM AND NO ONE ELSE AND HAVING IT ONLY FOCUSED ON THEM SHOWS HOW CLOSE
THEIR BOND WITH EACH OTHER GOES. HOWEVER, WE DID HAVE A FEW SCENES WHERE IT HAD
MORE PEOPLE IN THE VIDEO TO SHOW THEIR SOCIAL LIFE WITH FRIENDS AS WELL AS THEM
BEING TOGETHER. WE DID THIS TO CHALLENGE THE COMMON STEREOTYPE OF COUPLES NOT
BEING SOCIABLE WITH PEOPLE AND THEY ALWAYS DO THINGS WITH EACH OTHER.
An example of this is Nick Jonas’s song “Close” Where it is Him (Nick Jonas) And Tove Lo in
an empty air carrier which can show their affection for each other. And the use of special
effects in the music video of their clothes disintegrating shows How their development as
characters grows into a sexual relationship with each other. With ours, mostly being in a
relationship that shows them doing things with each-other. However, with our relationship
it shows their bond getting stronger over time with inside jokes being used in different
parts of the video. Whereas in Nick Jonas’s video it shows their relationship growing in a
sexual manor.
4. COMPOSITION
• POP MUSIC VIDEOS OFTEN HAVE THE ACTORS CENTRAL IN THE FRAME OF THE SHOT WHEN IT COMES
TO A NARRATIVE ABOUT ROMANCE, THIS IS SO THE AUDIENCE HAS FOCUS ON THE ARTIST ALONG
WITH THE USP OF THE ARTIST WHICH CAN BE ON THEM. FOR EXAMPLE, THE COSTUME FOR OUR BASE
TRACKS ARE THE USP FOR OUR ARTIST. AND THE CHARACTERS BECAUSE THEY'RE A KEY PART OF THE
NARRATIVE. THIS IS WHEN WE WOULD HAVE BOTH CHARACTERS CENTER FRAME OR ONE OF THEM IN
THE CENTER IF IT WAS JUST A SHOT OF THEM. HOWEVER, WE CHALLENGED THIS WITHIN OUR MUSIC
VIDEO IN CERTAIN SHOTS. FOR EXAMPLE, THE NEW YEARS SCENE WHERE IT WAS SHOWN FOR THEM
TO BE SOCIABLE AND BE SPREAD OUT WITH DIFFERENT GROUPS OF PEOPLE.
For example, Afterglow by Wilkinson shows small clips of the couple either together
in the shot or the actor or actress is central in the framing. We did a similar thing
with our composition in certain scenes, like when they meet up and the base tracks
josh is cantered in the middle of the frame. However, In the music video of afterglow,
They never show the actors or actresses off center like we do for example in the new
years party, When they're in the coffee shop and
5. ANCILLARIES:
• FOR OUR ANCILLARIES, WE DID NOT USE PROPS FOR THEM BECAUSE WE WANTED IT TO BE MORE
ORIENTED AROUND THE ARTIST (CHARACTER BASED) AND THE COMPOSITION OF WHERE HE IS IN
THE IMAGES THAT WE USE FOR BOTH THE MAGAZINE ADVERTS AND THE DIGIPAK. THIS IS SO THE
AUDIENCE DOESN'T GET CONFUSED WITH WHO IS THE ARTIST IS AND THEY FOCUS ON HIM INSTEAD
OF THINGS HE IS HOLDING, THE DIFFERENT CHARACTERS INVOLVED IN THE MUSIC VIDEO.
Something similar to what we did is a front cover of one of Michael Buble’s Album
covers. Where he is wearing a smart suit and is centered in the middle. They have
a similar pose and similar costume. However, the composition of the picture is
completely different with our artist being off center to leave space for the
audiences eye to guide them around the image. Whereas Michael Buble is central
and the audiences eye always stays around the middle of the picture.
6. MAGAZINE ADVERTS:
• WITH OUR MAGAZINE ADVERTS, WE KEPT IT AGAIN ONLY TO THE ARTIST
AND WE CHANGED THE COMPOSITION ON THEM SO THAT IT IS MORE
FOCUSED ONTO THE ARTIST. THIS IS SO THE AUDIENCE CAN STILL FOCUS
ON THE ARTIST AND CAN UNDERSTAND HOW ALL OF THEM ARE LINKED.
WE ALSO CHALLENGED THE STEREOTYPE OF USING FEMININE COLORS.
In Michael Bubles Magazine advert, He is again in the center of his
image. However we have centered our artist in this magazine advert
however, the positioning of his body is different and the image taken
isn’t at the same zoom. Another similarity would be that both
magazine adverts only focus on the artist and no one else.
