Evaluation Question 1
In what ways does your production
use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real fiction films in
your chosen genre?
Conventions of a typical film in my
genre
The genre that my film would fit into if it were
real would be a “home invasion” horror.
Typically the characteristics of a film in this
genre would be things like:
• Set in a single location (usually a house)
• Masked murderers
• Young and seemingly innocent victim
Films that would fall under my genre
• The Purge (2013)
• The strangers (2008)
• Your Next (2013)
How does my film fit the genre?
I feel that my film fits this genre because I
incorporated many of the generic conventions
that would be expected of a home invasion
horror.
Such as costume, setting and characters.
I do not feel that my film would challenge the
genre, as I decided to remain faithful to it in
many ways.
Characters And Costumes
The Victim: The actress I chose to play the role
of the victim fits the conventions of a similar
character in a real movie in this genre. The
character is young and female, which implies
innocence and vulnerability. Her costume
suggest that she is youthful and middle class as
her clothing incorporates bright colours, and
causal fits. This is seen commonly with a victim
in a home invasion horror.
The Murderer: The actor and costume I chose
to use for the murderer in my film fits the
conventions of my genre perfectly. This is
seen in his taller and more broad physical
build. His costume is perfect for a character of
this nature, as I felt that the hood and mask
concealed his identity and made him look
menacing, whilst still looking realistic.
Setting
The setting is an important factor in defining my film as a home
invasion, as there is always a strong feeling of realism in this sub
genre of horror. Their for I felt it made sense to set my
production in a relatively normal suburban home.
