Genres I enjoy
I enjoy action films because
of the fast paced and creative
storylines
It’s content is very exciting
and always has an unexpected
turn of events which I find
amusing.
I enjoy romantic comedies as it
combines two popular genres. I
enjoy the emotional side of the
film but I also enjoy the comical
aspect, I feel it makes the film
more lively and light-hearted,
Therefore I can relate more to the
film as I find it more enjoyable
rather than it being serious
romance.
I enjoy the suspenive atmosphere
created by the genre. I enjoy the
not knowing what is going to
happen throughout the film and
the rush of adrenaline when
something tense happens.
I find the mysterious content very
interesting to watch. In thrillers
there tends to be a big
development of characters and I
find it interesting to watch this
development as it creates many
thoughts within my mind as I try
to figure out the next stage of the
film.

Identifying the narrative...
A demon lies within the woods. It possesses and kills it’s victims.
Many reported cases have occurred however no proof has been
identified.
After Casey and Melanie witness their friend Arabella become a
victim of this horrific demon case it is their mission to gather
evidence to help destroy the demon once and for all.
Unexpected twists and turns occur throughout the film keeping it linked to
it’s genre.
Identifying the
narrative...I have watched various films in order to gain inspiration for my opening 2
minutes. The following films are the main films in which I got inspiration for
my opening:
 House at the End of the Street:
This film is a thriller genre, watching the opening of this inspired the idea of
possession and supernatural ideas to be a part of my film opening. It also gave
me idea and inspiration on the conventions of my chosen genre such as:
suspense feelings within the audience, use of sound and mise en scene.
 Hunger Games Catching Fire:
This film does not link to my film genre however it does contain some
conventions within the opening scene to my chosen genre. There are some
tense moments within the opening and is set in a similar setting to my chosen
location within the film. Both of these components have provided inspiration
and helped develop my opening scene I shall be creating.
 The Woman In Black:
This film is a thriller genre. The opening scene contains many inspirational
features. It has shown me that thrillers do not need to necessarily scare people
through the mise en scene but can use the mise en scene to set up the
plot/storyline of the film. This film has still kept the genre close in mind
through the use of startling music and continuity editing. Many camera shots
are similar to my style e.g. close ups and long shots.
Identifying the narrative…
My narrative follows Todorov’s theory of equilibrium:
The plot/story starts off in
equilibrium, there is a calm
happy atmosphere at the
beginning.
(Equilibrium)
Disruption occurs within the
plot. The demon attacks Arabella
and disrupts the tranquillity that
was there originally.
(Disruption of Equilibrium)
The girls manage to figure out a
weakness of the demon exposing it
as being vulnerable enabling them to
gather evidence and give it to the
scientists that created them. They
can the destroy it.
(Return to equilibrium)
Narrative: Part 1…
Casey, Melanie and Arabella are hanging out near the
forest.
They hear a startling noise, Arabella goes to investigate,
the others are apprehensive.
Arabella stumbles across the demon, it attacks her and
leaves her lying dead
The girls are worried as Arabella has not returned, they
go to find her when they see her dead body, as they turn
around they can see Arabella stood there ( Possessed)
next to the Demon.
Narrative: Part 2…
A police investigation takes place trying to find the cause of the death.
The girls are assessed by psychiatrists due to the statement they put forward.
(2 Months Later)
The police investigation closes on Arabella's death saying the underlying cause
was that she fell from a tree to her death.
Casey and Melanie decide to avenge her death and prove that there is in fact
something in the woods.
They plan out their intentions, gather equipment (Cameras, night goggles etc…)
They enter the forest and wait… they see the horror unleash and gather
evidence… they try to escape with a near miss of death upon them. They get
back to their house where they find the data is erased from their camcorders.
They go back to collect it again where they find a secret hideaway ‘the demons
home’ They find a rucksack and take it back to their house… (The ending is not
revealed in order to fit the conventions of a Thriller.)
Identifying the target
audience...Target Audience:
Males and Female aged 15-25, various classes: Male and female both appeal in the target
audience as the genre is mainly aimed at people who enjoy the suspense and psychological
tension within the film genre; this therefore can appeal to both men and women. The age is
typically around 15-25 as it is a similar age to the characters making it more relatable to the
audience. Various classes appeal as various kinds of people find thriller films entertaining,
people can like thriller films because they find it relatable with age/ class or just the
conventions of a typical thriller.
Sub-genres – Supernatural and Action makes the target audience a lot more broader due to the
wider classification of the film, can bring other people to the film out of interest of the other
genres.
