EVALUATION QUESTION 1
In what ways does your media product use
develop or Challenge forms and conventions of
real media products?
FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF
THRILLERS
 There are different codes and conventions that involve
lighting, camera angles, editing and sound. Most of these also
depend on what sort of thriller it is.
LIGHTING (IN GENERAL)
 With Lighting the conventions of Thriller is for them to have dark
low light this is to set the scene I think this is so effect because it
really set the scene fro a dark film which al thrillers are they are
not meant to be happy and jolly. It also makes the audience
aware of the type of film they are in for.
LIGHTING(IN OUR PROJECT)
 In our project we choose to conform to this convention as
without it. It wouldn’t really look like a thriller we used low light
and tried to film our scene as dark as possible. This made the
thriller look every dark and mysterious which is actually what we
wanted.
CAMERA ANGLES (IN GENERAL)
 Camera angles depend on which kind of thriller a sub genre it is.
For Example If it was an action thriller you would get long shots or
mid shots to show the action that’s going on. If it was a
psychological thriller there would be close up and mid shot
because there wouldn’t be a lot of action but you would want to
focus more on emotion so there would be close up of the actors
faces.
CAMERA ANGLES (IN OUR PROJECT)
 With camera angles with also conformed to codes and
conventions. We used a range of shots like close ups and mid
shots we also used a POV shot this was very useful in getting the
audience to emphasise with the victim who was throw in the
boot. We used a close up of the killer to get his facial expression
when we was looking/admiring his handy work. We didn’t have
any action so there so no long shots to get it in too.
EDITING (IN GENERAL)
 With editing it’s the same as camera angles the pace of edits
depends on the sub genre of thriller the I will use the same
examples. If it’s a psychological thriller the slower the pace of
edits there would fades to black as tis would enforce the dark
lighting. With action thriller there would be faster edits as to get
the action in like fight scene they would show the action for
different angles of the fights.
EDITING (IN OUR PROJECT)
 We used the type of editing you would associate with a
psychological thriller as our thriller didn’t have much action we
used fades to black. It fitted the look we were looking for the
blackness really added dark theme we were looking for. So yet
again we conformed to the code and conventions.
SOUND (IN GENERAL)
 The music in thriller are usually used to build tension this is universal
for thriller this is a key component of a thriller as it helps to in form
the audience is happening and builds tension.
SOUND (IN OUR PROJECT)
 We conformed to the conventions yet again it was the choice to
make but we didn’t want to breach copyright laws and we
didn’t know how to make music so we used it classic music we
were looking for the type that was dark and sinister. Instead of
cheerful and happy to at to the dark low tone we were going for
in our project
SUMMARY
 We conformed to the code and conventions this helped make
our thriller as effective and as we could. We watched to draw in
the audience and engage the audience, using the code and
conventions to do this.
