In what ways does your
media products
use, develop or
challenge forms and
conventions of real
media products?
The Brief …
• The coursework brief asked us to create a
promotion package for the release of an
album, which is to include a music video and two
ancillary texts
Concepts & Theories
• There were a number of concepts and theories I looked
at. For example;
• Andrew Goodwin
• Goodwin made a number of points regarding to music
videos. E.g. the demand of record labels will include the
need for lots of close-ups of the artist.
• In my music video, many close-ups of the artist were
used. This is a common convention in pop music videos
(the genre of my artist) that we conformed to.
• Especially as the music video is meant to be the debut
of the artist. So this means plenty close-ups are needed
to familiarise the audience with the artist.

• Representation of Age
• Our artist is young so we were trying to represent youth
and youth culture.
• We did this through his clothing. Our artist wore
hoodies, varsity jackets and caps. These are clothing
items commonly worn by his audience.
• We also tried to represent youth culture through the
location in our music video and ancillary texts. For some
scenes in the video, we filmed at Banksy tunnel. A
location popular for graffiti. Graffiti is associated with
youth culture. Also the choice of a graffiti area links back
to our artist’s background. As he is from Brighton, a town
popular for its street art and graffiti.
The artist in my music video
I believe I represented the artist and his
audience very well is my music video
The original artist, we were
covering in the music video
• Voyeurism
• The notion of looking in was used frequently in our
music video. For example, we are ‘looking in’ when
the artist is getting a girl’s number
• We also had a voyeuristic treatment of the female
body. Females are usually sexualised in music
videos and media images are usually shown
through the ideas of men. Pop usually has a focus
on the female models’ bodies.
• We also did this in our music video, with the close-
ups and tilt shots (as if the audience is ‘checking
them out’)
