Q2: HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE
COMBINATION OF YOUR ANCILLARY
PRODUCT AND ANCILLARY TEXT?
•Main task +
•Timeout Magazine Piece +
•BBC R4 Today Piece
MAIN TASK + TIMEOUT MAGAZINE PIECE
Character recognition stood as a major contributory factor in
regards to the combination of both my main task and Time
Magazine piece. This is demonstrated through the usage of
imagery and representation in both text. For example all the
character personality types are identified in the “what student are
you?” section which creates a relationship between the
identification of each character in the main task e.g…
From watching the documentary the audience would‟ve
already established familiarity with the characters hence the
reason why they would be able to recognise them in the
article. This sense of familiarity allows my audience to
continue building a relationship with my characters fulfilling
their identity needs in terms of their uses and gratifications.
MAIN TASK + TIMEOUT MAGAZINE PIECE
 Does it fulfil its purpose?
I feel my article fulfils its purpose, advertising my documentary allowing the
audience to get a deeper insight to the construction of the documentary which
essentially attracts them into wanting to watch the documentary.
 Would it be appropriate for your target audience?
Due to the fact that my target audience are students, parents and practically
anyone involved in the education sector my documentary reaches directly to
them. It touches the heart of all my audiences whilst educating some on how
students really feel about 6th form.
 How does it combine with your documentary?
I think my documentary piece and article combine well together because they both
help build bridges between my characters and audience. These bridges
essentially make my documentary more appealing and as a result more
mentally accessible.
 How does it combine with your radio piece?
Both my listing magazine article and radio piece combine together through their
similarity of an interview style format. This cross over in details links the two
together the pieces and extends the audiences relationship.
MAIN TASK + BBC R4 TODAY PIECE
This quote was taken directly from my main piece which
was embedded into my radio piece in order to act as a trailer
of the original text as the purpose of my ancillary task was to
advertise the main task. Reusing the identical quote allowed
a relationship of similarity to be formed. I choose this
particular scene because it gives the audience who may not
be familiar with my documentary an immediate
understanding of what it may be about and the type of
emotions that will be shed by the characters.
The combination of this text with the interview and
presenters words allows the audience to track back to when
they were in school and understand that the documentary is
based around education which may allow my audience to
build relations with the my characters.
MAIN TASK + BBC R4 TODAY PIECE
 Does it fulfil its purpose?
I think my radio piece fulfils its purpose because it identifies the audience of R4
and appeals to them in regards to how the context is structured by first having the
presenter reinforce the ideas that occur in the documentary.
 Would it be appropriate for your target audience?
From researching the R4 audience I think my radio piece appeals more to my
higher class audience, those in AB and C1 group. However, combined with my
listing magazines the appeal is broadened to a larger variety. Changing the radio
piece to a „guest editing‟ segment meant that I was able to speak about my
education documentary whilst still extending the audience knowledge about other
current affairs.
 How does it combine with your documentary?
As previously mentioned speech was taken directly from my documentary which
creates a link between what can be heard in the documentary and what is heard in
the radio piece. This snippet entices the audience to want to watch my
documentary more.
 How does it combine with your Magazine piece?
The usage of an interview styled radio piece in combination with the interview styled
magazine piece puts a voice to the words that become more detailed as they are
verbalized in the documentary.
