1) The documentary uses a variety of filming techniques like non-linear storytelling, shot-reverse-shot editing, and different shot sizes to develop the genre of a sports drama film about boxing. 2) Sound is used both diegetically and non-diegetically to provide context and emotion. This includes voiceover, music, and adjusted sound levels during editing. 3) Mise-en-scene with costumes, locations, and props link the characters to the sport setting and genre of the film. Typography with bold white subtitles and titles are used for dramatic effect and readability.

challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

2. Narrative and Genre
Our media product is non-linear in the first minute as our title sequences take place during shots of the training scene and the wife’s
death. We spent a lot of time planning for the film through questionnaires, storyboards and risk assessments. This made sue we
established the theme, genre and plot of our film early on.
The genre of our film was sport drama as it is focused around boxing but traumatic events also take place in the plot which is shown
throughout the film. Films that gave us the ideas for ours include Southpaw and CREED.

3. Camera, angle, shot movement and position
Our media product contains a large variety of shots and editing techniques, each shot and type of editing we used give a different effect on the audience and
links to the plot. For example, we used shot-reverse-shot between me and Joe (who plays the character of Max Carter). This allowed the audience to see the
characters facial expressions when talking to each other. The shots we used in this editing were both medium shots which still gave the audience a clear view
of the character’s facial reactions, but still not being so close to the camera that the audience can’t see the character’s body language as well.
In the film we also used a mixture of close ups and medium close ups for a closer view of character’s faces and body language. The closer view of these
things linked to plot, for example when the close up of Max’s fist is shown clenching it tells the audience that he is angry. Additionally, we used long shots to
identify setting for the audience.

4. Sound
• In our media product sound was used throughout the film to not only fit the actions happening in scenes but to give the
audience some context about the film. The context was given through a voice over of Max Carter which was edited to play over
part of the training scene to tell the audience who some of the character’s names and past events which link to the events that
occur later on in the film.
• Diegetic sound of conversations was used however we did turn down the sound of the Joe punching the punch bag during
editing as it was too loud.
• Non-diegetic sound was not only used for the voice over, but also for the music we added over the death scene, titles and part of
the training scene.

5. Mise-en-scene
The mise-en-scene for our media product was very important as it was used to link the characters to setting and the genre of our
film. For example, the character’s Mia and Max needed to be dressed in sports clothes in order to fit the sport drama genre of the
film and their roles of a boxer (Max) and a boxing trainer (Mia).
Mise-en-scene of setting was also important as for a film with the major theme of boxing we needed a location that’s fits this as well
as a suitable street to film the conflict scene between Max and Amy Jones (Kat). Finally, the props in the film such as the punch bag
and boxing gloves again link to the sport drama genre of the film and fit the plot.

6. Typography
• The subtitles for our media product were edited onto a back background always after the fade out of a previous shot for effect
and were done in a white font. This created a dramatic and bold effect for the audience so they actually read them.
• The main title was done the same way but in a bigger and bolder font as it is more important and needs to stand out to the
audience more.
