MEDIA EVALUATION –
QUESTION 1
In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms or
conventions of real media products?
Medium: film Genre:
horror/thriller.Narrative-
 Our location was a key part of our film which I
think helped the most to tell the story. To show
this, we used establishing shots of inside the
house which I think really sets the scene for the
audience. It asks the questions, ‘who lives there?
And how old is that house?’We tried to capture
as much of the atmosphere as we could, purely
so we could make the audience feel as if they
were there too.
Camera work
 In our research, we found that in a lot of horror
movies now a days, they use POV cameras for
the main characters and we wanted to challenge
that. So, we used an app on a iphone camera (as
that is what the characters would have had) that
gave us an effect of an old camera which we
found worked really effectively. It allowed the
audience to see the storyline from two
perspectives. It also meant that more of the
characters emotion was capture.
Sound
 We used two different songs in our movie, one
for the opening credits and then one for the rest
of the movie. Both were fairly fast beat but
loaded with tension so that the audience were
still held gripped. The second song was the main
one for the movie and it took us a while to pick
the perfect one.We also used a variety of
different copyright free sound effects.These
included gunshots and the sound of a gun being
loaded. Equally, we used sounds from other clips
overlayed so that we could use sound from other
clips.
Mise en scene.
 I think that we got the mise en scene for out
film really well. The location was conventional
for anything in the horror genre, it was dark,
abandoned and mysterious which adds
character to the storyline. The characters also
had typical outfits for teenagers, which adds
realism as our target audience are the same
age as our main characters – which was done
for that reason.
Editing
 Transitions at the beginning are relatively
smooth as everything is calm, however the
moment things being to go wrong, the music
gets faster and the jump cuts are quicker
between shots. Putting in shots from different
angles quickly is effective because it makes the
scene look panicked and rushed which is exactly
what we audience to feel when they watch it.
Our titles and credits were also created to fit in
the genre of thriller and horror.
