In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and (genre) conventions of real media products? Sounder (1974) defines the typical conventions of a drama film as: “There is usually a struggle going on that is wrought with hardships, difficulty, and pain.” This definitely applies to the real media products I researched in preparation for creating my own teaser trailer for a drama film. I also think my teaser trailer uses these genre conventions as it is about a girl whose best friend miraculously disappears and who is subsequently left to track her down and faces many challenging obstacles along the way.
However my media products challenge conventions casting-wise as I had an all-female cast which is very rare in mainstream Hollywood films of any genre. Most of the media products I researched in preparation for creating my own media products had males in the leading roles. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts? I believe the combination of my teaser trailer, film poster and magazine cover is effective as part of a promotional campaign for my film ecbauseall three texts were consistent in terms of the target audience they were aiming to appeal to (18-28 year-olds) and the message they were trying to convey about the film to this demographicabout the film. All three media products make it clear to the audience who the main characters are as the actresses feature prominently and there are close up shots of the two main actresses in all three products.
Who is the target audience for yourmedia product and how did you go about attracting/addressing them? How effective do you think you have been? The target audience for my teaser trailer is 18-28 year-olds.
As part of my research process I addressed my target audience by creating a questionnaire and organizing a focus group in order to collect their views on their film viewing habits. Some important findings were that 35% of people said they were most likely to see a drama film when going to the cinema and 65% said the representation of adolescents in film is important to them. What have you learned from your audience feedback? The audience feedback for my final products which I obtained using the same methods I did in the research and planning stage (distributing questionnaires and organising a small focus group discussion) was overwhelmingly positive on the whole. I was told that my media products resembled real media products, especially my Empire magazine cover. One criticism of my teaser trailer was that it was long in comparison to other teaser trailers they had seen at the cinema.
How did you use digital media technologies in the construction (filming/postproduction) and research, planning and evaluation stages?
The digital media technology I utilized most throughout this process was the Wordpress blog where we had to upload our work from the research and planning, construction and evaluation stages, as opposed to handing in any physical copies.
