IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT
USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND
CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?
The magazine, across the 4-pages, ‘repeats’ (Steve Neale) codes and conventions from well know music magazines
such as ‘NME’ which I have used as my magazine of inspiration. I have also followed up with the codes and
conventions of my inspiration magazine by ensuring, that in I my magazine I have used all the codes and
conventions such as: masthead, main image, cover lines, barcode, Issue, date, price, convergence.
The style of my main production magazine has been greatly based upon my magazine of inspiration such as the
masthead on the front cover.
In my front cover there has been a repetition (Steve Neale), as I have used the same colour scheme of red and
white for the masthead, so that it appeals to my target audience who are used to reading magazines like ‘NME’
There has also been the use of convergence with social networking and a website link for the magazine itself which
gives the audience an easy access of the audience. This would therefore appeal to the target audience of 16-27
year olds as they are in most use of social media, this would therefore allow the audience to create a relationship
between the audience and media product, which will increase the awareness of my magazine. I have also got
Facebook and Twitter links to my own website in the editorial I have given, so that the editor and the target
audience can create relationship through the magazine they enjoy.
I have used my magazine of inspiration to model my magazine, for example the front cover I have put the star
appeal (Dyer) in the middle of the whole page so that everyone can notice it and bee the centre of attention and
therefore maybe the main reason the target audience would by the magazine or may be it’s the magazines
similarity to my magazine of inspiration ‘NME’ which is very popular to the target audience of the same age range
In the double page spread I have put the image on the left hand side and the interview on the right hand side
mainly because it is how my magazine of inspiration is layed out and because it looked easier on the eye for the
audience and myself when I read through it.
Another similarity is that both my magazine and the magazine of inspiration have not used pictures to support the
cover lines on my front cover. However the magazine I have made uses an editorial to get closer to the audience
and create a personal relationship with them using the website links and social media where my magazine of
inspiration has not.
HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT REPRESENT
PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?
My media product represents a target group of 16-27, as it is an indie
magazine, and is focused on party goers. This would then appeal to
students and young people of socio-economic needs of grade E to D. The
genre is shown through the main image of ‘star appeal’ (Richard Dyer)
which the audience will create a personal relationship with. This magazine
aims to create a diversion from everyday life for the audience which is
represented through the interview in the double page spread – suggesting
that this is an alternate reality where the has the chance to talk to their
favourite band. However, uses of this media product may differ from each
individual as it may appeal to someone simple because they like the ‘star
appeal’ (Dyer), Fall Out Boy featured within the magazine and as the main
image- who may be their idols and would want to achieve the success they
have got, form where they were before. And through the exclusive
interview with the members of fall out boy, the audience will see them as a
model and find ways to relate to them and create a personal identity
(Katz).
WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION (PUBLISHER)
MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND
WHY?
From the research that was completed pre-production, I would envisage that the
magazine company ‘NME’ may publish ‘Rock Out’ because ‘NME’ is a company that
creates and publishes magazines of the same genre, themselves and is largely
associated with rock, alternative and indie music. There are many reasons that ‘NME’
might publish ‘Rock Out’ as both magazines share many similarities. For example with
the ‘NME’ magazine codes and conventions which also ‘signifies’ (De Saussure) so
that the magazine ‘Rock Out’ looks and sells itself as a Rock magazine. Moreover the
magazine ‘Rock Out’ also has an amount of different features with the ‘NME’s’
magazine codes and conventions so as to differentiate itself and look different from
the rest of the magazines of the same genres
I think IPC would be a good media institution for my music magazine to be distributed
with. I think this because some of the other magazines that they currently publish are
very popular and up to date. NME is one of the magazines that they currently publish
are very popular and up to date. NME is one of the magazines that they publish and is
very popular around the country. Moreover I can say that NME has the same target
WHO WOULD BE THE AUDIENCE FOR YOUR
MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY?
According to Hartley’s seven subjectivities, age group would the most prominent as both males and
females of age group between 15 to 27 would buy these types of magazines, as they are still
young and would want to buy the magazines to know about the music industry and how its
looking, to see and hear about their favorite artists and to see the new bands that are forming, to
see to the new albums and listen to the tracks within them or even to just to win some prize that
has been shown on the front cover in order to attract them. As well as self image, as people you
like rock music would be more likely to have music magazines about rock, which is meant to show
off their favorite genre of music.
According to Katz’ Uses & Gratifications theory, both Diversion (where the audience can escape from
their reality and immerse themselves in the text) as they read the magazine and immerse
themselves into the stories of the musicians in the magazine thereby giving themselves another
realm/gateway (provided by the magazine) of their own to know more about the musicians and
the questions asked by the interviewee in the double page spread might make the reader feel like
that they are the ones asking the questions as the interviewee and are having a face to face chat
with the musicians from the band: Fall Out Boy. Inform and educate (where the audience Learn
something from reading the text), as before when the audience becomes the interviewee in their
own reality, and asks the questions the audience receive a surplus amount of information which
they learn.
According to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, will go more with social climbers (where the audience are
driven by improving their status in society) and survivors (audience members who want the
security and routine of knowing the characters will be ok or something to be resolved). Social
Climbers will be more likely to buy the rock magazine, so they can tell their friends of what's
happening and gaining a higher social status in their (in) group. Although survivors do not want to
HOW DID YOU ATTRACT/ADDRESS YOUR
AUDIENCE?
My magazine has a target audience of age 16-27 and attracted the a target
audience mainly through star appeal (Dyer) of the band ‘Fall Out Boy’ who
are well know band for there recent split and regroup the audience would
then want to know to know more about how the band is holding up or the
audience would want to know how they could start a band of their own and
be like their favourite band through personal relationship (Katz). I have used
codes and conventions such as the use of cover lines to appeal to a wide
range of different target audience according to their uses and gratifications
(Katz). Moreover, the use of convergence within my media product
specifically attracts my target audience of 16-27 as they are most in touch
with social media and will therefore use convergence such as Twitter and
Facebook to create a personal relationship with the magazine (Katz). The
cover line on the front cover is very recognisable from the target audience as
they will have read other magazines of the same genre and will notice that
that my production work and is the has the sae layout as the professional
magazines And through the use of Through the use off puff promotion, I am
able to appeal to my target audience by offering the chance to win
something which they may be attracted to.
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT
TECHNOLOGIES FROM THE PROCESS OF
CONSTRUCTING THIS PRODUCT?
• Through use of technologies used to create my media product
‘Rock Out’ I have learnt and developed on my knowledge on use
of software Photoshop.
• Through the use of the magic wand tool I was then able to get rid
of the background of my image and have the main image of star
appeal (Dyer) on its own. I then used the rubber tool in order to
touch up and ensure that it looked precise and the picture looked
of professional quality.
• Also, I used a gradient fill on the shape at the top of my magazine
of my front cover as well as on the contents page which then fades
out into the background colour. This therefore incorporates the pink
colour used in the main headline.
PHOTOGRAPHY PLANNING –
FRONT COVER
 The reason I chose this image was because it was a mid
angle shot that captured the four artists from the band Fall
Out Boy, this means that the audience can see the artist at
the same level as them, not with the high angle or low,
neither showing the artists are better or lower than them but
the same as them inspiring them to build a personal
relationship with so that the audience can become an artists
themselves.
PHOTOGRAPHY PLANNING -
CONTENTS
 For my contents page I did not use many
pictures, other than the pictures that presented
me as editor of the magazine near the editorial.
 I only used the editors picture as that was the
only picture I could fit into my contents page, this
had happened because the layout that I had
chosen did not allow me to put in any more
images other than the editors picture. This is a an
advantage as the less space I have pictures the
more space I have for the information about the
magazine.
 Moreover the layout I have chosen also made it
easier for me to add more info and yet keep the
same layout.
Final Image
PHOTOGRAPHY PLANNING -
INTERVIEW
 The images on the right are the two pictures I
have chosen for my Double Page Spread. As the
lighting on both the pictures are perfect for the
pictures I need for my magazine page.
 The reasons I have not chosen the images at the
top is because they angle they were in such low
angle were not the best of choices as it did not
help my audience see the artists properly.

LOOKING BACK AT YOUR PRELIMINARY TASK,
WHAT DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE LEARNT IN THE
PROGRESSION FROM IT TO THE FULL PRODUCT?
• Having looked at the preliminary magazine I Have noticed
that I have learned more about the tools of Photoshop and
how to use them in different ways to please the target
audience’s needs within the magazine such as making use
of the different tools to make and use more of the codes
and conventions to better get closer to my target audience,
to make a effective media product.
• Through my research and my own production work ‘Rock
Out’ I am now able to see the effect in attracting your
specific target audience. And therefore what codes and
conventions are most important in attracting their target
audience, such as the star appeal (Ricard Dyer)

As well as self image, as people you like rock music would be more likely to have music magazines about rock, which is meant to show off their favorite genre of music. According to Katz’ Uses & Gratifications theory, both Diversion (where the audience can escape from their reality and immerse themselves in the text) as they read the magazine and immerse themselves into the stories of the musicians in the magazine thereby giving themselves another realm/gateway (provided by the magazine) of their own to know more about the musicians and the questions asked by the interviewee in the double page spread might make the reader feel like that they are the ones asking the questions as the interviewee and are having a face to face chat with the musicians from the band: Fall Out Boy. Inform and educate (where the audience Learn something from reading the text), as before when the audience becomes the interviewee in their own reality, and asks the questions the audience receive a surplus amount of information which they learn. According to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, will go more with social climbers (where the audience are driven by improving their status in society) and survivors (audience members who want the security and routine of knowing the characters will be ok or something to be resolved). Social Climbers will be more likely to buy the rock magazine, so they can tell their friends of what's happening and gaining a higher social status in their (in) group. Although survivors do not want to
  • 6. HOW DID YOU ATTRACT/ADDRESS YOUR AUDIENCE? My magazine has a target audience of age 16-27 and attracted the a target audience mainly through star appeal (Dyer) of the band ‘Fall Out Boy’ who are well know band for there recent split and regroup the audience would then want to know to know more about how the band is holding up or the audience would want to know how they could start a band of their own and be like their favourite band through personal relationship (Katz). I have used codes and conventions such as the use of cover lines to appeal to a wide range of different target audience according to their uses and gratifications (Katz). Moreover, the use of convergence within my media product specifically attracts my target audience of 16-27 as they are most in touch with social media and will therefore use convergence such as Twitter and Facebook to create a personal relationship with the magazine (Katz). The cover line on the front cover is very recognisable from the target audience as they will have read other magazines of the same genre and will notice that that my production work and is the has the sae layout as the professional magazines And through the use of Through the use off puff promotion, I am able to appeal to my target audience by offering the chance to win something which they may be attracted to.
  • 7. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT TECHNOLOGIES FROM THE PROCESS OF CONSTRUCTING THIS PRODUCT? • Through use of technologies used to create my media product ‘Rock Out’ I have learnt and developed on my knowledge on use of software Photoshop. • Through the use of the magic wand tool I was then able to get rid of the background of my image and have the main image of star appeal (Dyer) on its own. I then used the rubber tool in order to touch up and ensure that it looked precise and the picture looked of professional quality. • Also, I used a gradient fill on the shape at the top of my magazine of my front cover as well as on the contents page which then fades out into the background colour. This therefore incorporates the pink colour used in the main headline.
  • 8. PHOTOGRAPHY PLANNING – FRONT COVER  The reason I chose this image was because it was a mid angle shot that captured the four artists from the band Fall Out Boy, this means that the audience can see the artist at the same level as them, not with the high angle or low, neither showing the artists are better or lower than them but the same as them inspiring them to build a personal relationship with so that the audience can become an artists themselves.
  • 9. PHOTOGRAPHY PLANNING - CONTENTS  For my contents page I did not use many pictures, other than the pictures that presented me as editor of the magazine near the editorial.  I only used the editors picture as that was the only picture I could fit into my contents page, this had happened because the layout that I had chosen did not allow me to put in any more images other than the editors picture. This is a an advantage as the less space I have pictures the more space I have for the information about the magazine.  Moreover the layout I have chosen also made it easier for me to add more info and yet keep the same layout. • 10. PHOTOGRAPHY PLANNING - INTERVIEW  The images on the right are the two pictures I have chosen for my Double Page Spread. As the lighting on both the pictures are perfect for the pictures I need for my magazine page.  The reasons I have not chosen the images at the top is because they angle they were in such low angle were not the best of choices as it did not help my audience see the artists properly.

  • 14. LOOKING BACK AT YOUR PRELIMINARY TASK, WHAT DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE LEARNT IN THE PROGRESSION FROM IT TO THE FULL PRODUCT? • Having looked at the preliminary magazine I Have noticed that I have learned more about the tools of Photoshop and how to use them in different ways to please the target audience’s needs within the magazine such as making use of the different tools to make and use more of the codes and conventions to better get closer to my target audience, to make a effective media product. • Through my research and my own production work ‘Rock Out’ I am now able to see the effect in attracting your specific target audience. And therefore what codes and conventions are most important in attracting their target audience, such as the star appeal (Ricard Dyer)
