What kind of media institution
might distribute your media
product and why?
By Connor Triggs
The British Film industry
The British film industry is an incredibly increasing force in the
film industry and last year had a 17% market share in the
global market which is a significant increase 2009 when UK
only obtained 6.7% of the market share. In 2011 British films
took $5.6 billion at the global box office which is the best on
record.
Independent Companies
Our film has a very low budget so we feel that it would be best
to distribute our film to a niche local market. We will also use a
staggered release across the UK and maybe to different parts
of Europe. I think that the most suitable companies to
distribute our film is working title or Warp as these companies
have a lot of history and have access to the global audience if
needs be.
The three key parts of distribution is promotion (due to the
increase in technology I suggest we use a technology based
promotion using social networking sites), merchandising and
premiers
Working Titles
Working titles is a British film company, based in London. It
was founded by Tim Bevan and Sarah Radclyffe in 1983. In
1992 Polygram a major record label became the company’s
corporate backer. Radclyffe then left working title and Eric
Fellner an independent film producer joined the company.
PolyGram Films became a major Hollywood competitor. In
1999, PolyGram was sold to Seagram and merged with MCA
Music Entertainment, to form Universal Music Group.
PolyGram Films was sold and folded into Universal Studios in
1999. So therefore working title is now part of Universal
studios. Working Titles since then has made many globally
successful films like Hot Fuzz, Johnny English and Paul.
Warp films
Warp films is an independent UK film production based in
Sheffield and London. It was established by Rob Mitchell and
Steven Beckett. Their first film was Chris Morris My Wrongs
#8245–8249 & 117 filmed in 2002, it won the award for Best
Short Film at the 2003 BAFTA’s and became the first short film
DVD single in the UK market. Since this initial film Warp Films
has won numerous plaudits and awards. Its most famous film
is “This is England” which had a gross takings of $327,919.
In Conclusion..
I feel that the most suitable company to distribute my film is
Warp as it specialises in targeting a local market. In order to
fund the distribution may be through the BFI which uses lottery
funds to help small independent companies like Warp
compete with the big 6.
