What kind of media
institution might
distribute your media
product and why?
Working Title Films is a British
film production company that
is owned by Universal
Studios. It was founded in
1983.
The company has distributed
films such as the Bridget
Jones trilogy, the Theory of
Everything and Les
Misérables.
Lionsgate is an American-
Canadian entertainment
company which was
established in 1997 in Canada.
Lionsgate has distributed films
such as La La Land, The Hunger
games and The Duff.
Warp Films is an independent film
and TV company based in the
United Kingdom.
Out of all three companies we have decided to choose Warp Films as we feel it will suit our film more than the other two
companies (Working Title and Lionsgate). Warp Films specialise in creating media products for a niche market, this means
that they focus on attracting a specific audience rather than focusing on everyone. Warp films has produced some of the
UK’s most popular TV series’ and films such as:
This Is England is a 2006
British drama film written
and directed by Shane
Meadows. The story centers
on young skinheads in
England in 1983.
Four Lions is a 2010 British
black comedy film directed by
Chris Morris. The film is a jihad
satire following a group of
homegrown terrorist jihadis
from Sheffield, England.
Submarine is a 2010 British
comedy-drama film adapted
from the 2008 novel with
the same name. It is based
on a 15 year old with two
objectives in life.
Warp Films is an independent film and TV company based in the United Kingdom. The
produce and distribute a range of TV series and films that attract a niche audience. It was
established in 1999 by Rob Mitchell and Steve Beckett and is a sister company of Warp
records (established in 1989).
In the early stages of the company it was funded by NESTA (National Endowment for
Science, Technology and the Arts). Now the company is one of the biggest UK
independent companies. It has produced and distributed a range of popular TV shows
and films in the UK such as :
• The Midnight Beast (TV Series)
• This is England
• Submarine (Film)
• ‘71
Budget, style and content will be affected by using Warp Films as our distributor. This is because they are an
independent company and don’t have as many opportunities that big Hollywood companies so (Sony or Warner
Brothers)
The budget will be affected as the company is independent, this means that the budgets of films and TV shows from
this company have low budgets. For example, Four Lions (a Warp Films production) had a budget of £2.5 million and
This is England had an even smaller budget of £1.5 million. These films don’t get big budgets like Hollywood
entertainment companies (The Big Six) as when the films are released they won’t make a high profit due to been
targeted towards a niche market
The style and content will be affected by distributing the film through Warp Films due targeting a niche market. For
example, Four Lions is a film about a group of four home-grown terrorist jihadis from Sheffield (This is a black comedy
film which means it tackles serious or taboo topics) and This is England is a film that is based on young skinheads in
England in 1983. As our film is a psychological horror it targets a niche market as it is a sub-genre. Therefore, Warp
Films would be the best distribution company for our film as both the company and our film target a niche audience.
