Evaluation
of the Music Magazine.
Luke Doherty.
G321.
• Originally the group I was working in were supposed to record the
evaluation, but due to unfortunate circumstances we weren't able to find
the time to record the evaluation itself and as a result we are now working
individually on the evaluations of each edition of the magazine. It was a
good idea to work as a group as there was a range and a variety of ideas
that were involved in making the magazine and we worked cohesively and
efficiently as a group. Yet it in the end it worked out that we worked
individually, as we couldn’t rely on other people.
In what ways does the magazine, use, develop or
challenge forms or conventions of media
products?
Challenges - My edition of the magazine fights against the Stereotypes that exist around
modern music and how it’s the be-all and end-all. By bringing folk music back into the
spotlight ;it could provide a renaissance for folk music and as it was very popular when it
was one of the best types of music around, I felt I could focus my attention on areas of
music that have been deprived in recent eras. ‘The fight against modern music’ is one of
the areas I could focus my attention on as it provides older generations which a chance
to enjoy themselves to music they listened to in their younger days.
Develop – The Inclusion of Social Networking on the front cover of the magazine shows
that although it focuses against modern music it tries to use all resources available to the
magazine to promote it and uses popular social networking sites such as facebook and
twitter to show this aswell as the inclusion of the web address of the magazine.
Use – The use of Coverlines to provide information about the magazine which is
commonly used amongst the majority of magazines which is placed on the front cover
and within the magazine aswell as the competitions I provided in my edition of the
magazine to keep up to date with the existing formats that already exist.
How does your media product represent particular social
groups?
• Social Groups – The social groups my magazine focuses is on is the ages of
it’s audience which are older generations or new audiences to music who are
looking for alternative options to modern music. It challenges stereotypes
aswell by focusing on a ‘lost’ type of music. It also gives an insight into the
type of target audience I would be providing the edition for.
What kind of media institution might distribute your
media product and why?
• Bauer Media – I think the best institution for my music
magazine is ‘Bauer Media’. It owns famous music
magazines such as ‘Mojo’ and ‘Kerrang.’ They are 2
popular and famous music magazines. It’s the right
institution for me as I feel there is a gap in the market at
Bauer Media in regard to music magazines as they own a
lot of music magazines. This is a benefit as it allows me to
compare mine with others and I tried to use popular selling
points on there’s to help me develop my magazine. Yet the
variety of the 4 editions of soundcheck makes it a unique
magazine and especially my edition as it focuses on folk
music, which I don’t think is covered largely within the
music magazine industry. They are a UK based institution
which is good as they focus on domestic based magazines
which soundcheck is. It’s a local magazine so it fits the
purpose of my magazine to be with Bauer media.
Who would be the audience for your media product?
• Audience. – It’s based on providing a magazine for local people looking for
live, cheap and local music. It’s also for people don’t want to pay huge
amounts of money to go huge venues and would rather see local talent
right on their doorstep.
How did you attract/address your audience?
• Address/Attract your audience – Within the magazine there are
opportunities to win free prizes, and this would appeal to the audience as
it can provide them with a chance to listen too the music the magazine
was providing them with information about.
• Give insight into local venues – The magazine actually gives a list to the
target audience of the venues they can go and attend to find where the
artists they are playing and go and watch these local artists.
• Give info about local bands - The magazine gives information about local
bands through the interviews they have with them, also snippets of
information show when you can see them playing live and their
background.
What have I learnt about digital technologies?
• What have I learnt about digital technologies – I learnt how to use
Photoshop, Adobe InDesign and other types of software which allowed me
to create my music magazine. Aswell as uploading photos. I also Learnt
how to use of a variety websites such as SlideShare, Prezi and Scribd.
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you
have learnt in the progression from it to the original
product?
• Learnt from Preliminary Task – I
learnt and understood new uses
of software and learnt how to
fully analyse magazine front
covers, contents pages and
double-page spreads in detail.
Main Task.
Preliminary
Task.
Feedback from target audience.
• Feedback from target audience – For the feedback of my magazine, I asked
my fellow group members to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of my
magazine.
• I was told my front cover image was good as it fitted my magazine style and
focus well. The effect on the image made my magazine fit into place. I was
also told my Coverlines were interesting and enticed my target audience.
• Some improvements were that my contents page should have more
information on it aswell and to use a variety of colours as green was too
constant.
