How effective is the
combination of your main
product and ancillary
texts?
Main Task Review Poster
PURPOSE
The main aim and objective of the poster is
to support and promote the main text, the
short film itself. With this, the poster is
conventionally part of a greater scaled
electronical press pack and has a task to
make the film itself look captivating and
endearing, so the viewer is persuaded to
watch it. Inter-textual references help this
particular ideology as the viewer can clearly
see the film has been successful.
Furthermore, I have used this within the
composition to translate this idea as well as
adhering to conventional poster elements
Similarly to the poster, the review acts as a third
party opinionated account on the films form,
narrative and representation of societal issues.
The structure of the review has a sense of control
over the audience’s actions as from the
presented account, readers can simply decided
whether or not they want to invest their time into
such mediation. Although being potentially
biased, I have created a balanced persona of a
reviewer and an account upon my film, using
evaluation and film-specific references, lexis and
register to translate the main context of the film
and why perhaps an audience would want to see
it.
Individual ideologies are transcribed through the
a film text as it is here that the representations
of issues and themes within the genre are
conveyed the most. As this was my main
platform in relaying to an audience of what I
wanted to say, I decided to infer a greater
meaning through conventional technical codes
and an individual production style whilst
remaining in the genre of Social Realism. I
wanted to assign the main task a purpose of
successfully representing issues around young
women’s mental and physical health issues as
well as pressures they may face that could
contribute. I chose this as I have noticed within
society that this is a increasingly adapting issue
that needs awareness and understanding.
AUDIENCE
From the posters composition it can be
decoded that my audience is perhaps a group
that has pre-existing media and film
knowledge as well as an appreciation for a
minimalistic style and aesthetic. This is
because of the enigma-toned atmosphere the
poster creates as the narrative is not
completely given to the viewer, if at all. By
challenging known convention of poster
constructions, the simplistic portrayal of key
mise-en-scene acts as iconography that needs
to be decoded, an attribute mainstream or less
film literate individuals may not be prepared to
invest time in. The inter-textual references of
topical film companies yet again hints to the
idea my audience is well educated and aware
of the film sub-culture and nichè companies
within the sector itself.
A key indicator on what particular audience I would
be targeting is the use of film literature lexis and
register within the base text of the review. As
established from the poster, the use of language
suggest the audience is well-educated and able to
decode the description of particular film sectors with
the opinions review. Alongside this, the references
to my previous work infers that a percentage of the
audience is aware of my place in the short format
industry. In contrast the reference to other
professional texts suggests that they are aware of
the genre’s values, conventions and principles as
well as the work itself. The visual aesthetic follows
similar patterns to the poster as the layout is
minimalistic, meaning that the audience has a level
of appreciation for ‘realist’ styles and forms. The
page architecture allows easily accessible
navigation and reading, giving an opportunity to any
social group to read this particular mediation. Colour
coordination and the placement of graphics
emphasises this aspect as it helps differentiate
different areas of the page.
The form and shape of my main task
also follows a similar ideology that the
audience is aware of the Social Realism
genre and texts within in meaning that
common conventions such as the use of
real locations, untrained actors and a
low-budget production style are
identified as well as the issues and
themes such conventions are helping to
represent. Adhering the Marliyn
Milgrom’s theory of using familiar places
and rituals, audiences will be able to
relate and understand my protagonist
and her situation whilst feeling a level of
increasing tension. As well as this, the
use of a naturalistic and minimal
aesthetic in the fil relates to the genre of
Social Realism.
ISSUES AND THEMES
Within the poster, key issues and themes are transcribed
through the challenged use of depicting minimal mise-en-
scene. Due to the bare colour palette and composition, it is
accessible to infer that the possible represented in the film is
surrounding a form of health, physical or mental. This is
concluded as basic connotations of the iconographic pill bottle
is health issue. Furthermore, the composition suggests that the
audience will have this prior understanding of the connotation,
also meaning that they are perhaps aware is the wider
contextual issues the film references. This iconography, paired
with a minimalistic agenda, shows preconceptions of the films
production styling. It generates an idea that as the promotional
aspects of the poster follow a simplistic composition, this is
perhaps a positive element within the film, prompting it to be
advertised in the poster. Alongside this, the viewer will generate
an ideology that the film falls into the Social Realism genre due
to the set up of props and integration of text. Developing this,
the lack of bold colours and monochromic aesthetic relates to a
greater macro meaning of the disequilibrium in the protagonists
life.
Similarly, to the poster, the review again encapsulates
the focus of mise-en-scene as the integrated graphics
is again depicting key iconography of a pill bottle. This
paired with the base text review establishes to the
reader clearly the issues and themes faced within the
film, as well as an opinionated view point on how they
are delivered. Appraisal regarding the social
presentation of issues from a third party source infers
to the reader that the film successfully portrays the
director’s ideologies. As differentiated by colour
coordination, the review itself is separated by the main
film synopsis, using film literate lexis and register to
relay to the reader what issues are potentially faced as
well as what happens in the narrative.
Within my film, issues and themes are
constructed via technical codes as they infer
meaning through the visual representation. For
example, the use of close coverage juxtaposed
by a wider coverage constructs the idea of
isolated space. As well as this, close coverage
allows you to clearly see the emotive response
felt by the character, a key importance in my
narrative due to the beginning section mostly
being expressed through internal emotions.
This aspect allows the issues and themes to be
translated to an audience easily, however, this
infers that my audience will have a pre-existing
knowledge on the short format and particular
conventions and stylistic aspects o the form
and Social Realism genre.
CONCLUSION
Purpose – In conclusion, the purpose of the poster and review is to advertise and promote the
film’s most positive attributes, giving the purpose of the film to deliver the promoted aspects
as well as addressing societal issues.
Audience - The stylistic features of both the poster and review adapts an already established
minimalistic and naturalistic within the film with adheres to further social realism conventions.
Issues and Theme - Within the film, a key aspect that causes an earlier on disequilibrium is
the pill bottle and medication. With this, both the poster and review uses this iconography to
translate a visual iconographic representation of the film’s narrative.

  • 1. EVALUATION QUESTION 2 How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
  • 3. PURPOSE The main aim and objective of the poster is to support and promote the main text, the short film itself. With this, the poster is conventionally part of a greater scaled electronical press pack and has a task to make the film itself look captivating and endearing, so the viewer is persuaded to watch it. Inter-textual references help this particular ideology as the viewer can clearly see the film has been successful. Furthermore, I have used this within the composition to translate this idea as well as adhering to conventional poster elements
  • 4. Similarly to the poster, the review acts as a third party opinionated account on the films form, narrative and representation of societal issues. The structure of the review has a sense of control over the audience’s actions as from the presented account, readers can simply decided whether or not they want to invest their time into such mediation. Although being potentially biased, I have created a balanced persona of a reviewer and an account upon my film, using evaluation and film-specific references, lexis and register to translate the main context of the film and why perhaps an audience would want to see it.
  • 5. Individual ideologies are transcribed through the a film text as it is here that the representations of issues and themes within the genre are conveyed the most. As this was my main platform in relaying to an audience of what I wanted to say, I decided to infer a greater meaning through conventional technical codes and an individual production style whilst remaining in the genre of Social Realism. I wanted to assign the main task a purpose of successfully representing issues around young women’s mental and physical health issues as well as pressures they may face that could contribute. I chose this as I have noticed within society that this is a increasingly adapting issue that needs awareness and understanding.

AUDIENCE From the posters composition it can be decoded that my audience is perhaps a group that has pre-existing media and film knowledge as well as an appreciation for a minimalistic style and aesthetic. This is because of the enigma-toned atmosphere the poster creates as the narrative is not completely given to the viewer, if at all. By challenging known convention of poster constructions, the simplistic portrayal of key mise-en-scene acts as iconography that needs to be decoded, an attribute mainstream or less film literate individuals may not be prepared to invest time in. The inter-textual references of topical film companies yet again hints to the idea my audience is well educated and aware of the film sub-culture and nichè companies within the sector itself.
  • 7. A key indicator on what particular audience I would be targeting is the use of film literature lexis and register within the base text of the review. As established from the poster, the use of language suggest the audience is well-educated and able to decode the description of particular film sectors with the opinions review. Alongside this, the references to my previous work infers that a percentage of the audience is aware of my place in the short format industry. In contrast the reference to other professional texts suggests that they are aware of the genre’s values, conventions and principles as well as the work itself. The visual aesthetic follows similar patterns to the poster as the layout is minimalistic, meaning that the audience has a level of appreciation for ‘realist’ styles and forms. The page architecture allows easily accessible navigation and reading, giving an opportunity to any social group to read this particular mediation. Colour coordination and the placement of graphics emphasises this aspect as it helps differentiate different areas of the page.

The form and shape of my main task also follows a similar ideology that the audience is aware of the Social Realism genre and texts within in meaning that common conventions such as the use of real locations, untrained actors and a low-budget production style are identified as well as the issues and themes such conventions are helping to represent. Adhering the Marliyn Milgrom’s theory of using familiar places and rituals, audiences will be able to relate and understand my protagonist and her situation whilst feeling a level of increasing tension. As well as this, the use of a naturalistic and minimal aesthetic in the fil relates to the genre of Social Realism.
  • 9. ISSUES AND THEMES Within the poster, key issues and themes are transcribed through the challenged use of depicting minimal mise-en- scene. Due to the bare colour palette and composition, it is accessible to infer that the possible represented in the film is surrounding a form of health, physical or mental. This is concluded as basic connotations of the iconographic pill bottle is health issue. Furthermore, the composition suggests that the audience will have this prior understanding of the connotation, also meaning that they are perhaps aware is the wider contextual issues the film references. This iconography, paired with a minimalistic agenda, shows preconceptions of the films production styling. It generates an idea that as the promotional aspects of the poster follow a simplistic composition, this is perhaps a positive element within the film, prompting it to be advertised in the poster. Alongside this, the viewer will generate an ideology that the film falls into the Social Realism genre due to the set up of props and integration of text. Developing this, the lack of bold colours and monochromic aesthetic relates to a greater macro meaning of the disequilibrium in the protagonists life.
  • 10. Similarly, to the poster, the review again encapsulates the focus of mise-en-scene as the integrated graphics is again depicting key iconography of a pill bottle. This paired with the base text review establishes to the reader clearly the issues and themes faced within the film, as well as an opinionated view point on how they are delivered. Appraisal regarding the social presentation of issues from a third party source infers to the reader that the film successfully portrays the director’s ideologies. As differentiated by colour coordination, the review itself is separated by the main film synopsis, using film literate lexis and register to relay to the reader what issues are potentially faced as well as what happens in the narrative.
  • 11. Within my film, issues and themes are constructed via technical codes as they infer meaning through the visual representation. For example, the use of close coverage juxtaposed by a wider coverage constructs the idea of isolated space. As well as this, close coverage allows you to clearly see the emotive response felt by the character, a key importance in my narrative due to the beginning section mostly being expressed through internal emotions. This aspect allows the issues and themes to be translated to an audience easily, however, this infers that my audience will have a pre-existing knowledge on the short format and particular conventions and stylistic aspects o the form and Social Realism genre.

CONCLUSION Purpose – In conclusion, the purpose of the poster and review is to advertise and promote the film’s most positive attributes, giving the purpose of the film to deliver the promoted aspects as well as addressing societal issues. Audience - The stylistic features of both the poster and review adapts an already established minimalistic and naturalistic within the film with adheres to further social realism conventions. Issues and Theme - Within the film, a key aspect that causes an earlier on disequilibrium is the pill bottle and medication. With this, both the poster and review uses this iconography to translate a visual iconographic representation of the film’s narrative.
