Our film was a sports comedy thriller, so we looked at films such as cool runnings
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUprJqP8Phw and Donnie Darko http://www.
youtube.com/watch?v=GD669WXS4YY. The conventions of these films are thriller
and comedy/sports. We took certain elements from these films as the twilight from
Donnie Darko and tried to put this in our film by placing the camera in area of
shadow. We also tried to take the light-heartedness incorporate it into our film. . The
clothes of our characters also reflect their importance to the plot as they are all
wearing black apart from the main character who is wearing green which represents
good and the mysterious bully who is wearing red to represent evil.

In our film there are several social groups represented. There is the traditional
bully/mysterious stranger, sporty kids and Local news journalist. We represented
these groups through use of clothes and movements and also in the case the
journalist his voice. We used sporty/casual clothes for the bikers as they weren’t
meant to be sport enthusiasts but had an interest in riding and set the scene for a
casual race. We showed that they were sporty through their control of the bikes and
often by showing them speeding down hill, this made them seem more professional
while explaining the lack of spectators and the press not knowing that they were
there. The press journalist was shown to be so by using an umbrella and his voice
showed he was a local as his accent was common.
We wanted our audience to be teenagers and slightly younger. As the main
demographic of cinemas are teenage males we appealed to this audience by having
relatable characters who ride bikes, also the bully character appeals to tough kids.
We thought that teenage males would enjoy our sense of humour as we are all
teenage males. The action included in our film would draw the teenage males to the
film and they would enjoy the mysteriousness of the bully character. We gave the
bully character a hoody as many teenage males wear hoodies and we thought they
would relate to him. We also think that our film would appeal to older audiences as
the humour is similar to old sketch shows such as Monty python as it is mainly
slapstick. The film is also light-hearted so it would be fun for most audiences, the
film‘s main aim is to be fun for all audiences so we didn’t want to shorten our target
audience parameters.
We have learned a lot about different media technologies during the process of
constructing this product. We have learnt how to use cameras, and the video
camera JVC GR-D860. We have used lots of different camera functions such as
zoom and playback, we have also learned about manual camera maintenance such
as changing batteries and connecting it to computers. We now know a lot about
adobe premier plus which was our editing software. We have learnt how to add and
animate titles, cut and move pieces of film and sound, add sound effects and
transitions. During this time we have also used final cut pro, soundtrack, aperture,
motion compressor, DVD studio pro and live type.We also had to master the
www.blogger.com website as we needed to put our production on it.
We used things such as our music to attract our audience, for instance at the start
our music is “wings of the wind”, this music lures our audience into a false sense of
security and then it abruptly changes to “bounty” this music is much faster and more
upbeat, it works very well with our genre and the style of our opening sequence i.e.
action. We had lots of shots of characters racing past and crashing this we thought
would draw our main demographic in. We tried to include the most interesting
locations such as the spinney we had adds mystery to the sequence as it is away
from civilisation and works well with our theme of mystery and danger. Each
character appeals to the audience and are all different so they are specific to
different types of demographic. For instance my character wears a helmet as he is
the most caution while Alex Myers’s character is the first to crash so he is the worst
rider.
Looking back I think that we learned to include planning to much higher extent, as
during the preliminary task we didn’t do much planning so it could have turned out
much better. We remedied this by doing a lot more planning for our Main task as we
knew if we didn’t plan there would be many parts of the production. For instance we
planned exactly how we were going to edit parts of the film before we actually did it,
I think this helped us to keep it a group operation and made it necessary only to
change parts of the film once unless it didn’t have the desired effect. We also used
a lot of our camera experience from the preliminary task to get the right camera
angles and shots to create the feeling we wanted.
