This document discusses electric vehicle charging trends and infrastructure needs. It finds that Level 2 charging, which provides charging at around 7 miles per hour, is sufficient to meet the needs of most passenger electric vehicles, as over 80% of daily driving distances are under 100 miles. Level 2 charging is also more cost effective to install than faster Level 3 charging. While Level 3 fast charging is necessary for longer distance driving, the document concludes that Level 2 charging ports should be the focus of infrastructure expansion, as they can meet the needs of the vast majority of passenger EVs and support the projected growth of electric vehicles to 15 million by 2030 in a cost efficient way.
