The European Union (EU) was created after World War 2 to foster cooperation and prevent future conflicts between European countries. It has since grown to include 27 member states and over 500 million citizens, with goals of promoting peace, democracy, human rights, and economic prosperity across Europe. The EU operates various institutions that make decisions for the bloc and oversees a single market and common currency used by many member states. While focused internally on European integration, the EU also plays a major role globally in areas like trade, foreign aid, environmental protection and addressing challenges like terrorism and climate change.
