The Ministry of Industry and Commerce in Iceland agrees with comments made by other EFTA states regarding the Green Paper for a European Strategy for Sustainable, Competitive and Secure Energy. The Ministry notes that Iceland's electricity market is isolated with no connections to the European grid, so some areas may not be able to participate fully in the internal European energy market. Most comments received by the Ministry from Icelandic energy stakeholders relate to Iceland's isolated electricity system. The use of energy is very high per capita in Iceland, but 71% of its total energy comes from domestic renewable sources, much more than most other countries. The proportion of renewable energy is unlikely to increase much in the near future given Iceland's already high reliance on renewable sources

PERSPECTIVES OF PV SECTOR IN EUROPE
The PVs in Bloom Project was created to support the installation of small to medium-sized photovoltaic plants in marginal areas across Europe. The project aims to promote the sustainable diffusion of solar power according to environmental and functional criteria. While Germany and Italy are leading the growth of solar installations in Europe, policy changes like retroactive cuts to feed-in tariffs in some countries threaten to reduce profits and investor confidence. Global solar module production is expected to increase significantly in coming years, but supply may exceed demand in 2011, leading to price drops and order cancellations for inverter suppliers. European solar markets are forecasted to grow moderately without policy support, but could reach over 13 GW by 2014 under a policy-driven scenario.

US Shale Gas Revolution
The US shale gas revolution has not proven to be a game changer for Qatar. While it has virtually eliminated US demand for imported LNG, strong demand from Asia, particularly from Japan after the 2011 Fukushima disaster, has replaced US demand. Global LNG demand is expected to remain strong over the next decade, and Qatar is unlikely to lose its leading role in the global energy market for years to come. The US shale gas revolution is also unlikely to spread to other parts of the world like Asia and Europe due to technical challenges and environmental concerns, so Asia will likely continue to be Qatar's largest LNG importer.

At present power supplies are tight causing load shedding at times. Problems being experienced in building new generating and distribution capacity to meet on-going growth in demand.

The theme for this quarter is rearrangement. The loss, or potential loss, of Russian oil and gas supplies is forcing producers, refiners and traders to rethink the flow of crude oil and refined products from the wellhead to the gas pump in light of sanctions, potential sanctions and the risk of reputational damage. Countries, companies and consumers will all be searching for ways to adapt, and the outcome of the race to bring alternatives to market could alter the global energy landscape for years to come.
It is likely crude oil and LNG prices will remain elevated for some time. The process of diverting Russian oil through countries unwilling to sanction it will take time and there is little indication OPEC members are willing (or able) to increase production to make up for the loss of Russian crude. Spare capacity sat at 3.7 mbpd at the end of 2021, just above where it was in January 2020. Currently, sanctioned Venezuelan and Iranian production (about 3 mbpd below their peak) could fill the gap, but political and commercial obstacles remain. At today’s prices, US shale production is attractive, but the fastest the industry has been able to grow is between 1mbpd and 2mbpd per year. The LNG infrastructure was already stretched before the war in Ukraine and there is little prosect of finding new supplies soon.
As the largest buyer of Russian energy, Europe will be the epicenter. There is a deeply embedded bias there in favor for renewable energy, and the current crisis is certain to result in an all-out effort to accelerate the build-out of wind and solar power. The capacity to add new green energy is limited though by the project pipeline and supply chains for solar panels and wind turbines, and it is likely that much of the shortfall will be made up with the new LNG infrastructure.
DNV report: How LNG takes shape
Natural gas is on track to overtake oil as the world's primary energy source by the mid-2020s. Global LNG production is expected to increase substantially, from 250 million tonnes per year in 2016 to around 630 million tonnes per year by 2050. This will be driven by growing demand, especially in China and other Asian markets, as well as the diversification of LNG supply sources from countries like the US, Australia, Russia, and new producers in Africa.

Future of european gas market
1. The future of the European gas market is uncertain, with opinions ranging from optimism about liberalization and competition to pessimism about declining European production and challenges finding alternative suppliers.
2. While there is optimism about shale gas, renewables, and more LNG imports providing alternatives to Russian gas, production is declining in Europe and it remains unclear if sufficient alternative supplies can be found and delivered.
3. The liberalization of the European gas market depends on building new pipelines and finding a gas surplus, which may be difficult in a context of declining production and uncertainty around alternatives.
Global LNG Navigating Risks in a Dynamic Market
Liquified natural gas (LNG) has been a traded commodity for more than a century. But only in the last couple of decades has the market expanded to meet the ever-increasing demand for energy, through low carbon emissions energy sources. With the development of the massive Qatar LNG facilities in the mid-1990s and the increasing demand for imported gas, global LNG trading has grown from about 50 MTPA in 1990 to more than 350 MTPA in 2020.
Most energy commodities struggled with lower trade and consumption volumes under the pandemic-induced industrial shutdowns in 2020. LNG trade was, however, up slightly at 0.4% during the year, continuing its uninterrupted streak of year-over-year growth since 1996. However, that growth was far below rates in the preceding years which averaged 7% since 2004.
