EASTER IN MY COUNTRY
GREECE
This year, it’s on 1st May
The Holly Week
It is the last week of Lent and people
remember the last week of Jesus’ life.
People go to church to attend the Holly
Mass. On Holly Monday, Tuesday and
Wednesday people also prepare their homes
and their villages for the big celebration.
People whitewash their houses and the
churches especially in villages and on the
islands
During Holly week people don’t eat meat or dairy
products.They fast.
We eat seafood and pulse.
Holly Thursday
It is a very important day.
We remember the day of
the Last Super and the
moment when Christ was
arrested and crucified.
On this day people dye eggs
red to symbolize the blood
of Christ and the renewal of
life.
Easter goodies
We also bake
special Easter
cookies. We call
them ‘koulourakia’.
We also bake
special sweet
bread called
‘tsoureki’. They are
delicious!!!
On Holly Thursday
People mourn, they
are very sad.
Church services
are held around
the country and
there is a
representation of
the Crucification.
People go to
church light
candles and say
prayers.
At night when the
church service
finishes women and
girls stay at the
church and
prepare the
‘epitaph’ for the
next day, Good
Friday.
