Building direct, secure, and reliable connectivity to cloud service providers with Equinix’s Performance Hub and the Equinix Cloud Exchange allows companies to bypass the public Internet and take advantage of the benefits of cloud computing. Performance Hub extends a company's network into Equinix data centers, enabling private connections to over 975 networks and 450 cloud providers. The Equinix Cloud Exchange provides seamless, high-performance access to multiple clouds across the globe through virtual circuits. This allows enterprises to build sophisticated hybrid cloud solutions securely and with improved performance over public internet options.
Brian Lillie, CIO of Equinix, discusses Equinix's adoption of Splunk Cloud for its security information and event management (SIEM) needs. Equinix wanted a cloud SIEM solution for its flexibility, subscription pricing model, and ease of deployment compared to an on-premises SIEM. Splunk Cloud met Equinix's needs out of the box by handling different data types and providing security analytics. Equinix now uses Splunk Cloud for malware protection, user account protection, data leakage protection, and has seen promising results like reducing raw events to only 20 actionable alerts.
The document discusses emerging trends in technology including everything becoming connected through web applications and real-time data synchronization between devices replacing the traditional client-server model. It also summarizes that the goal of technology should be to just work, scale, and be transparent. The rest of the document discusses how data, compute resources, and networking can be viewed as economic goods and services that are delivered over time, with datacenters serving as hubs for this transportation of digital information and computing power.
The document discusses the benefits and promises of cloud computing, including reduced costs, scalability, and accessibility of services from any location. It examines how cloud computing allows on-demand access to computing resources over the internet. While some IT managers were initially reluctant due to security concerns, studies show cloud computing is cost-effective for storing and accessing data worldwide. The document also reviews major cloud computing companies, types of cloud environments, functions provided in the cloud, and technologies that enable cloud computing services.
The document discusses how the internet is disrupting existing industries by shifting power away from large institutions to individuals and smaller entities. It also discusses how the internet allows for more capital efficiency and lower transaction costs. Several industries are mentioned as being next to experience disruption, including consumer finance, education, energy, and healthcare.
Etsy is an online marketplace where handmade and vintage items can be sold by individual creators. It was founded in 2005 by Rob Kalin, who wanted to create a site for unique goods unlike mass-produced stores. Sellers upload photos and descriptions of their items for buyers to purchase. Etsy makes money through commissions of 3.5% per sale and charging sellers a small fee to list items in their storefront for multiple months. While competitors like eBay and Amazon sell various new and used goods, Etsy differentiates itself by exclusively featuring handmade and vintage creations.

Sellers pay Etsy a 3.5% fee on each completed sale. Etsy operates on a decentralized model where individual sellers organize their own virtual stores and listings within the Etsy platform. It relies on crowdsourcing to provide inventory and uses a revenue model where both Etsy and individual sellers profit from each transaction.

None of these could be met easily with the current Documentum architecture in place.

First Utility is the largest independent energy supplier in the UK, serving over 1 million households. When Bill Wilkins became CIO/CTO in 2010, he faced challenges of scaling IT as the business grew rapidly. He focused on developing First Utility's own technology solutions like the My Energy platform, which helps customers reduce energy usage and save money. This focus on in-house innovation and a cloud-based infrastructure allows First Utility to disrupt the traditional energy market through agility and lower costs compared to competitors.

The document discusses the growing mobile landscape and opportunities for collaboration between mobile operators and enablers. Some key points made include that mobile data usage is expected to grow significantly in coming years, surpassing voice calls by 2014. This growth opens opportunities for new revenue streams through services like mobile advertising and partnerships. To capitalize on these opportunities, the document argues that mobile providers and enablers must come together and collaborate using data centers to fuel innovation.
Equinix is building a new data center, LD6, in London Slough to meet continued customer demand. LD6 will provide over 8,000 square meters of colocation space with over 1,000 fiber connections and aim for gold LEED energy efficiency certification. Equinix utilizes innovative cooling technologies at LD6 like indirect evaporative cooling and rainwater harvesting to reduce energy consumption and carbon footprint. Phase 1 of LD6 is set for launch in Q1 2015 with initial cabinet capacity of 1,385.

“Unlike data centers hosted by a single ISP,
Equinix lets us choose the best carriers
with the best routes to ensure that our
members consistently experience the
best performance.”
Mike Rembetsy, Director of Technical Operations at Etsy
The Current Environment
Etsy connects makers of handmade goods with buyers who appreciate them. Its vision is to present
the world with a better choice: Buy, Sell, and Live Handmade. The Etsy community now spans the
globe with buyers and sellers in more than 150 countries. Prior to 2008, the company ran its entire
platform on a handful of hosted servers, but in response to an overwhelming increase in buyers and
sellers Etsy needed to prepare for extraordinary growth by deploying an infrastructure that was fast,
scalable and highly available.
The Solution
In 2008, Etsy deployed its first infrastructure in an Equinix facility, a relatively simple three-cage setup.
Today, just three years later, Etsy is running 50 cabinets of high-density racks in the International
Business Exchange™ (IBX®
) data center in the New York metro area and at the Silicon Valley IBX
campus, which houses Etsy’s off-site disaster recovery and storage infrastructure. This build-out has
supported the company’s steady growth from one million to more than nine million members, and from
250 million to more than one billion page views per month. “Equinix provided us with the scalability and
geographic diversity to satisfy our need for growth and redundancy,” said Mike Rembetsy, director of
technical operations at Etsy. “And the fact that we have scaled so far, so fast with excellent uptime has
everything to do with Equinix’s capabilities and extremely professional staff.”
