Counseling involves a trained professional meeting with an individual, couple, or family to discuss issues and problems. Counseling has several ethical principles to guide the process and protect both the client and counselor. These principles include commitment, justice, beneficence, non-maleficence, fidelity, self-respect, autonomy, confidentiality, and integrity. The counselor's role is to use scientific methods and techniques to build a trusting relationship and help clients understand and solve problems. Counselors have responsibilities to their clients, society, and themselves to provide fair, impartial services and maintain competency and standards of performance.
