ETDS AT DUQUESNE
• Q. What are ETDs?
• A. ETDs (electronic theses and dissertations)
are electronic versions of traditional print
theses and dissertations. They are created
using word processing software and then
converted to PDF
• Q. Why does Duquesne require ETDs?
• A.
• They offer immediate and world-wide
exposure of research.
• They enhance presentation and communication
by providing opportunities for hyperlinks,
interactive elements, and multimedia.
• They provide an opportunity to learn basic
skills of scholarly publishing.
• They provide an electronic document for a
personal website or an electronic CV.
• They save storage and binding costs.
WHERE CAN I FIND OLDER ETDS?

QUESTIONS ABOUT ETD SUBMISSION?
LET’S TALK ABOUT FORMATTING!
Common questions and mistakes + how to make your ETD life easier!
FORMATTING BASICS
• ETD Guidelines are your new best friend!
• Components and order of ETD
• Global formatting for body (fonts, margins,
pagination)
• Detailed formatting for front matter
• Supplemental style guides such as APA or
MLA
• Basis of ETD Review
TIPS FOR MAKING YOUR FORMATTING EASIER
• Use the templates found on the ETD website
• These provide the exact spacing that you need  just replace the information with your
own and your dissertation/thesis will be formatted correctly!
• Turn on the “Paragraph Marks” in Microsoft Word in order to better see
paragraph breaks, spacing, and other issues
• Watch the tutorial videos on the ETD Guide that show you how to correctly
paginate your dissertation/thesis, including on landscape pages!
TABLE OF CONTENTS
• As you continue to add/subtract from your dissertation/thesis, the pagination
will also continue to change  creating a Table of Contents that can
automatically update as you make updates is a great way to save yourself
from this headache!
• This takes some initial work to set up, but once it is established, the Table of
Contents can be updated as you work
• These steps can be modified for Lists of Figures/Tables
TABLE OF CONTENTS: HOW TO
Under
“References” tab,
insert “Table of
Contents”
Apply headings 1,
2, 3 (if desired) to
chapter titles and
other headings
Update Table of
Contents  it is
searching for the
assigned headings
CITATIONS AND REFERENCES
• Buy the citation guide for whichever style you chose!
• Consider using a citation management tool such as EndNote, Mendeley, or Zotero in
order to:
• organize your research
• create easy citations and works cited list within Microsoft Word
• The library regularly offers instruction sessions about the best ways to utilize these
citation management tools (See:
http://guides.library.duq.edu/presentations for upcoming sessions)
