Reflecting on my early memories of reading and writing is difficult. I never identified as a strong
reader or writer. In fact, growing up I put little importance on reading and writing because, unlike
most other parts of school, I didn't feel very good at it. Therefore, I never gave my experience as a
reader or writer much thought and when asked to reflect, my mind went blank then filled with
mostly disappointing memories and finally questions of why my mindset was what it was and how I
can take action to identify and rectify the same mindset in myself and in my students.
Reading
My have no early home memories of reading. I always did my homework but I remember lying on
my reading logs about how much I read because I wanted to go play outside or I had to do chores
and didn't have time. My parents had a very busy schedule between raising four children and
working sometimes multiple jobs. When they were home I wanted to spend time with them and
what they did was watch TV. Although I believe the lack of books in my home and adult models
of readers did not help foster a relationship with reading for me, I do not blame my apathy towards
reading on them by any means. My parents always reinforced the importance of and respect for
school. Without them I would not be where I am today. But I recognize their limitations and my
privilege.
I do have memories of reading with my father but it's not how most would assume. In middle school
I began helping my father read in English. He had

Reflective Essay About Reading
Reading is important in all aspects of learning. It widens vocabulary, improves imagination, and
is how we discover new things. More than anything, reading develops the mind. It is important to
begin reading with children at a very young age, to introduce new concepts and words creating a
strong basis for the future. Most small children love being read to; they find picture books fun
and enjoyable because of the animated pictures and presentation of the words. After each time
they read a book, they remember the fun pictures or words, looking forward to the next book. If a
good memory of reading is planted in a child, as they grow older not only will reading come more
naturally, it will bring more pleasure. I believe the key to successfully getting a student to read is to
make it as enjoyable as possible. In reading this article, I was able to relate on a few different
levels. I could put myself in the teacher's shoes on some levels, but even more so with the
students. In Middle School, one of our reading assignments were reading cards, for which our
teacher would pick a new genre each month and we had to read chapter books according to the
genre. Reading cards were a tool the students would use to summarize their readings each time
they read. The reading cards consisted of a chapter book the teacher chose, each month a different
genre. After each section we read, a short summary was to be written and we had to write down and
look up any words we didn't know. This was

Reflection On My Reading Skills
Reflection Before taking this class I thought that my reading skills were exceptional, but I was
undeniably wrong about that. Now, after taking this class I can say that my reading skills have
greatly improved. I now know how to analyze works of art and find new meanings behind the
words that I read. Now, with the knowledge on how to use criticism to my advantage, all types of
literature will become wide open to me in a sense that I will be able to understand literature in
greater detail. I would certainly say that I learned more in this English class than any other
English class I have taken so far, even though it was online. I even improved on my grammar
throughout the course of these past six weeks. I learned how to write more comprehensive
paragraphs and how to write essays that stay on topic as well. Before taking this class I had not
read too many poems so I was not too familiar with quoting or citing them. Now, I easily know
how to quote a line or stanza without having to look up what to do every time. I would also say that
I am far more appreciative of literature, more than ever poetry. Before this class I did not take
poetry to seriously as I thought it was silly and for the most part nonsense that was being spat off
by crazy writers. Unbeknownst to me I found out quickly just how deep and emotional some
poetry can be. I found out awfully fast that poetry is more than just dilly dally writings and the
nonsense that I believed it was. Of course, being as old as I

Essay on The Importance of Reading
Reading has at all times and in all ages been a source of knowledge, of happiness, of pleasure and
even moral courage. In today's world with so much more to know and to learn and also the need
for a conscious effort to conquer the divisive forces, the importance of reading has increased. In the
olden days if reading was not cultivated or encouraged, there was a substitute for it in the religious
sermon and in the oral tradition. The practice of telling stories at bed time compensated to some
extent for the lack of reading. In the nineteenth century Victorian households used to get together
for an hour or so in the evenings and listen to books being read aloud. But today we not only read,
we also want to read more and more and catch up...show more content...
There is then the serious reading undertaken for research and for satisfying one's longing for
knowledge. It may be a subject of scientific significance, or a subject of historic or philosophic
importance – varying according to the taste of the person. This kind of reading disciplines the mind
and trains one for critical and original thinking. There is yet another kind of reading –reading for
pleasure. Though serious reading is also a source of pleasure, reading which is devoted mainly to it
differs in one respect. It grows upon one, it gives before demanding and it soothes and relieves
tension and loneliness. The only kind of reading which neither stimulates thought nor provides
knowledge is one which is approached negatively, with the simple motive of escape and of "killing"
time.
A person who is widely read is able to mix with others: he is a better conversationalist than those
who do not read. He can stand his ground. Reading broadens the vision. it is in a way a substitute
for travel. It is not possible to travel as much as one would like to and reading can fill in the gap
created by the lack of travel. "Reading", as Bacon wrote in his essay. 'Of Studies'. "maketh a full
man: conference a ready man: and writing an exact man". Thus a widely–read man is a better
conversationalist and is able to see the other point of view.

At this point in my life I find myself in an interesting predicament regarding my attitudes toward
reading and writing; more so towards reading. Years ago I used to love reading books for pleasure
but nowadays I find myself reading things that little to no effort to digest. This includes the very
basic posts on facebook expressing one's opinion on something or articles and threads on reddit
discussing topics I find intriguing. Perhaps it's the severe senioritis that has overcome me as I
enter my last semester at Chapman University. As I've gotten lazier I can see it start to reflect in
my everyday life. Deep down I still love to read but I rarely find myself getting truly invested into
the action unless it relates to something I am very...show more content...
You can feed the mind as much as you want and it will never get full of reading. Sadly, I'm not the
same person that I was. I guess you could say it's part of growing up. It never really was
intentional but it's just the way how it ended up. On the other hand my attitudes toward writing
are very different. First let me say that deep down I truly do not like to write. I myself don't
personally like to write for leisure or pleasure but rather I write because I believe it is one of the
most important aspects of being able to communicate with those around you, both personally and
professionally. To put differently, my attitude towards writing is that I write because I need to
write and survive in the world around me. I write because I have to, not because I want to.
Hopefully this somewhat makes sense. To better explain let me make a comparison. When I am
assigned a writing assignment or I am writing because the action is being forced upon me I find
myself not enjoying the process and overall the end result is subpar. The perfect example of this
would be my junior year in high school when I was enrolled in AP english literature. I dreaded the
majority of the class simply because there was so much writing involved in the entire course and
therefore I was constantly writing just to get a grade. Being forced to write in such high volume
every week for an entire school year was not enjoyable for myself and as a result the

At this particular moment, I find myself in an unsure realization with my attitude to reading and
writing, even more to reading. I use to love reading, as a matter of fact, I would save my money
just to buy new books to read. It would be right to say that I enjoyed reading in earlier years, and
now I find myself reading things with no effort to try to understand the true concept of the text. I
can still say that deep down I still enjoy reading but I rarely find myself getting truly invested in
it's unless it related to something I am familiar with. One of my earliest vivid memories of reading
would be during preschool, where the whole class would gather around the colorful circular rug,
and one student would pick a book that would be read to the entire class for that day. Dr. Seuss was
a very common pick, I remember the teacher reading slowly and showing the pictures, while every
student listened with such amazement. Afterwards, we would sit at our tables, which seemed big at
that time, and trace our names and letters and numbers, not even realizing that we were taking our
first steps into learning the concept of writing. Kindergarten through Elementary school was where I
learned the concept, of composing sentences and the principals of basic writing. Throughout those
years, I learned how to compose and improve my writing by learning new techniques and rules; this
is where the traditional five–paragraph essay was learned. Gammer and spelling were one of my

Reflection Of Reading And Writing
Writing has always been something I dread. It's weird because I love talking and telling stories,
but the moment I have to write it all down on paper, I become frantic. It's almost as if a horse race
just begun in my mind, with hundreds of horses, or words, running through my mind, unable to
place them in chronological order. Because I struggle to form satisfying sentence structure, it
takes me hours, sometimes even days, to write one paper. It's not that I think I'm a "bad writer," I
just get discouraged easily. Needless to say, I don't think highly of my writing skills. When I was
little I loved to both read and write. I read just about any book I could get my hands on, and my
journal was my go to for my daily adventures. Although it's...show more content...
Project three, Recovery is Possible: Narcotics Anonymous, hit very close to home for me. This
was a paper discussing a discourse community, the importance of such, and the niche associated
with Narcotics Anonymous. This paper meant a lot to me and I feel honored to have been able to
write about such a beautiful thing. Both of these projects needed a lot of work done, but I was
able to identify the mistakes and correct them using the skills I mentioned earlier. During the
revision process of project one, My Personal Analysis of Repurposing, I was shocked. As I was
reading, I was thinking to myself, "who even wrote this?". I made several major revisions in order
for it to be ready to showcase. After rereading my draft again and again, I ran into a major
dilemma. I broke down the literate practice of organization into three main components: detail
oriented, time management, and teamwork. I thoroughly explained how I repurposed detail
oriented and teamwork, but time management lacked important information. I added nearly a
whole page regarding how I've repurposed managing my time at different places in different ways.
Another one of the major changes made was reorganizing the structure of my paper. On my rough
draft, I had a very poor introduction. I cut some of it out and reorganized it so everything flows
correctly. I also had

I love to read, but it didn't start out that way. When I was in first grade and we are just starting to
learn how to read books, I remember being mad because I wasn't in the advanced reading group.
The advanced reading group got a different book than everyone in the normal reading level and
got to work in a different section of the room. This made me so mad that I decided I didn't want to
try which, when I look back on it now was not the smartest thing I could've done. I knew how to
read but it never really appealed to me, especially since I wasn't the most proficient reader. And
why would I want to read a book when I could play with a Bratz doll? My feelings on reading
never really changed until I got into the fourth grade. Of course I, a kid who despised reading,
was placed in the one class that had a teacher that expected fifteen minutes of sustained reading
every class. During the time she allotted for reading I would sit stubbornly and refuse. My teacher
contacted my mother to let her know what was going on in class. She also told my mother that
she wouldn't give up on me and that she just had to find something that I was interested in. When
the teacher took my class in the library to get new books, she followed me around offering
suggestions of what to read. It wasn't until I tried a book from the Lily Quench series that I
actually found something that I enjoyed. The book is about a girl who is orphaned and is the last

that can lead to a better future. It requires continuous practice, development and clarification. In

advantages of the digital books are the following: it may offer lower costs, it is easier to monitor

it also has it disadvantages. By using it, you may adapt the habits of skimming and scanning, which

My love of reading blossomed when I was a child, because my parents showed me how wonderful
reading is. There were countless nights when I remember myself as a little girl refusing to go to
sleep before 'tucking dad into bed' by reading him a picture book. Not only did I uphold that
tradition though, but my mother is a preschool teacher, so she gets really into reading out loud, and
she would help me read books such as The Boxcar Children set, The Secret of NIMH and The
Chronicles of Narnia weekly until I didn't need help anymore. My favorite books to read on my

because I couldn't just 'wing it' anymore. But my eighth grade reading teacher, Mr. Stanley,

that towards the end of the year, all I wanted to do was improve myself, because after all, how could
I be a teacher if I never learned anything new? I would love to have this scholarship because I aspire
to become a middle school language arts teacher. Because even though I had many adult figures in

The Importance Of Early Reading Skills
Reading is a skill often taken for granted but it is essential in order to progress in life. For a child
being able to read well helps them learn new things, give ideas and enables use of imagination.
National literacy trust (2015) suggests that children's early language skills can have a major impact
on a child's development of literacy skills. Five–year olds with poor language and literacy have a
higher risk of underachieving at age seven and beyond. Reading skills encourage more opportunities
in life and it can affect a child's wellbeing if they do not achieve this effectively (Finnegan,2015).
For a child who is just starting to learn to read, they need sufficient practice in reading a variety of
different books to achieve fluency. Reading can be complex and has many different aspects
(Burns,1999). It is suggested that children who have problems reading and writing at a young age
will find it hard to catch up as they get older and will not reach their full potential as adults, many
will withdraw from school or society and some becoming involved with crime (MacBlain,2014). 40
percent of children find learning to read a challenge but with early help, most reading problems can
be prevented (Reading Rockets, n.d.).
This resource had been created to encourage a child to learn to read through play. It is in the form of
a game and it is aimed at helping a child repeat the words that extra practice is needed from a book
that has been read. The resource created is a game that incorporates play and praise in which are
essential skills to support a child that is learning something new. Games enable all children to
develop skills without pressure and are particularly important for children who may be less
confident (Lindon, 1993). The 'Let's Read' game can be used for a variety of ages as the words
can be changed and personalised depending on the child's reading ability. This game is a good
way of helping to teach a child to read and improve on words that they struggle with because it is
taught by learning through play, therefore the child is less aware they are learning and it is a fun
way to practice. The child is also receiving praise and reward through the star reward sheet that
comes with the game. By

Reading
Introduction
Reading is one of the main skills for learning a language. Reading is a skill that requires learning. It
has its own strategies to be mastered. Although reading skills promote at early age by the support of
parents, teachers play an important role in varying strategies of learning reading at children.
The way I learned English I learned to read English by scaffolding the long words to know which
part of speech they are. I started by reading words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs then whole pages.
At the start, I realized the mistake I was making by stopping at each difficult word to translate. This
interrupted my whole understanding of what I was reading. Then I moved to guessing difficult
words from the context. I...show more content...
The second strategy is scanning. It is a primarily quick reading through that allows me to break
reading into pieces or scaffolding to reach the main ideas. Scanning is to review what you have
read to understand your reading. Deconstructing the material of reading is a direct purpose of
reading. It allows to get specific details to connect with general ideas to get a full picture of what
is being read. The third strategy is summarizing. I used to give the reading passage again but in my
own words to make sure to what extent I mastered it. This develops my understanding of the reading
material. Then I answer reading questions and try to get answers from my summary and from the
original reading material to make sure my summary lacks nothing.
Summarizing makes me understand what I am reading using a simpler language. The fourth strategy
to learn English reading is discussing. I used to discuss what I read which an adult or a teacher.
Discussing my reading will add assurance and full understanding of it. It will make me more able
to apply what I read in life through discussing and analyzing looking for positive and negative
aspects in the reading passage. Discussion based reading can also be tested through answering
questions related to the passage if reading and commenting on them. The fifth strategy is extracting.
It is very important to use it for getting information out if visual charts or timetables. I

My Reading and Writing Experience over the Years
Literacy Narrative: My Reading and Writing Experience over the Years
I have never been the type of student who enjoyed reading or writing. I have always found it
difficult to express myself by writing narratives, book reports, and any other required assignment. I
am far more skilled at speaking or verbal expression in general as I have found over the years that
people tend to misunderstand my point if it is written.
When I sit to write, I have to think about what I want to say. This is not easy for me as I tend to
think about several things at once. Clearing my mind and focusing on the writing task is a challenge
in itself. I do not consider myself a strong writer and find it intimidating especially when I know it
will be critiqued. The sense of failure when seeing the paper I worked so hard on look like the
newest local headline of a recent murder is disheartening for me. I assume I am being overly
critical of myself but those feelings seem to be redeemed when I look over the aftermath of what
was my wonderful work of mental art.
The irony of all of this is I write many different things in my current job. One any given day I draft
contracts, amendments, and addendums to name a few. I have learned a great deal from my bosses
and mentors which has made me a better writer and more aware of my grammar and proofreading
of work. My Vice President is an attorney and English major with a keen ability to find the minutest
errors. I try to take any criticism

My Journey : My Reading Journey
My reading journey began at a very early age and was kickstarted by my family. My mother and
father encouraged me to read as soon as I could do it by myself. However, I am unable to give all
the credit to my parents. As soon as I could read I devoured books at a break neck speed whenever I
got free time. Books became an island of fantasy where I would take my private jet mind to
whenever I was stressed. I may have been exposed to reading by my family, but I lovingly drowned
myself in a sea of literature as soon as I was able. My first memory as a reader was of "Harry Potter

Slightly at my sisters urging, mostly to satiate the endless void I had for books, I took on the
mountain of a book "Brisinger" in fourth grade. This was a big step for me at the time because I
had never read a book that long and needed to test the boundaries of my curiosity. I read
"Brisinger" in, what felt like a record, 3 months. This was the peak of my elementary reading
ventures and I had conquered it. I became a more confident, excited, and deep reader moving
forward. My middle school years were not as eventful as a reader. I almost singularly read fiction
and didn't grow much as a reader besides the level at which I read increased. This is the time at
which I started to have less free–time, therefore less reading time. I still loved reading, however it
wasn't as easily accomplished in middle school compared to elementary school.
I entered freshmen year as a confident reader, choosing "The Kite Runner" for a class project.
That book was very mature and had dark themes, which I was unfamiliar with. "The Kite Runner"
tore the veil from my eyes and forced me to deal with unhappy truths in the world which I didn't
enjoy. This distaste led me to take a break from reading for freshman year. However, my passion for
books was stirred when I read "In Cold Blood". It was the first non–fiction book I supremely enjoyed
and helped introduce me to a new genre. Finally I read "East of Eden" and enjoyed it. This book on
my ideal bookshelf symbolizes that I

Essay on Reading Comprehension
Reading Comprehension In any interaction with a text, the text is pretty much useless unless the
reader can comprehend the meaning of that text. Since narrative, expository, and poetic texts all have
different reasons for being written, and different forms of presenting the text, different strategies are
needed to comprehend these texts. There are also many reading strategies that can be used for all of
these types of text. In order to describe strategies to help develop activities that facilitate
comprehension of narrative, expository, and poetic texts one must first have an understanding of
what comprehension means, they then need a better understanding of how the human brain works.
"Comprehension is a creative, multifaceted...show more content...
If there are no changes in long–term memory, nothing has been understood or learned." (Sweller,
2005) The competent comprehender is a skilled reader. "Skilled readers are those who actively and
automatically construct meaning as they read; they are self–motivated and self–directed; they
monitor their own comprehension by questioning, reviewing, revising, and rereading to enhance
their overall comprehension." (Douglas Fisher, 2011) One other skill that is crucial to being a
skilled reader and comprehending text is the fluency with which a student reads. Teaching fluency
skills is a very important aspect of helping a student comprehend what they are reading. If a student
is using all of the short term memory decoding words and sentence stucture, there is very little left to
work on the process for gaining meaning from the text. The most common strategies used to improve
fluency are; adding vocabulary to the students long–term memory, activating background knowledge
(schema), modeling, and having the student read.
So what are other strategies that can be used to help the non–skilled student comprehend what they
are reading? "The most important comprehension strategies for struggling readers are activating
background knowledge, determing importance, summarizing, questioning, visualizing and
monitoring." (Tompkins, 2010, p. 267)
Background knowledge helps the student with both fluency and the understanding

Reflection On Reading Comprehension
Introduction
Reading is one of the most beneficial activities a man can do. Out of reading, man can be able to
discover new things, concepts, places and people. More so, reading is a way to relax our mind and
soul, going deeply through the world of story and improves our thinking and internalization process.
Furthermore, reading opens the mind to new horizons and exposes a new experience. That's why,
whilst reading it also needs some sort of any other way of process, wherein man can read and
understand texts deeply. This so–called other way of process is the outlining, that in such a way, can
be a tool for a meaningful reading comprehension.
An outline establishes an orderly relationship of facts or ideas. It is an essential tool and a
time–saver. (De La Cruz and Aquino, 2008). It is the guide when reading or guide for writing a
report. Furthermore, outlining serves as a visualization of the ideas and information in an orderly

things about growing up, things that had morals and would teach valuable lessons (I remember one
book about a shoplifter who had to do community service at an animal shelter), I read real fiction:
Jurassic Park, Dragonriders of Pern, Lord of the Rings... Stuff of fantasy and science–fiction that let
my mind stray from reality. Stuff that kept my imagination alive while I was being forced to
learn multiplication and the names of countries. Of course, my teachers encouraged me to keep

of their influence, however, that kept me interested in books. It was because I loved it. It put
pictures into my head and made me think. So I kept reading. But even then I knew reading wasn't
enough... Yes, the stories were fascinating, but they weren't what I wanted. Back then I wasn't sure

Reflection On Academic Reading
Reading is one of my favorite pastimes. I am a tuned–in Reader, and I appreciate well written

reading as well, but sometimes it is intense and requires much concentration. Moreover, I am a

history. Every spare moment I have; I pick up a book or magazine, and get carried away, by the
text. I visualize the story and its' characters as if, the story is taking place right next to me.
Furthermore, I predict the outcomes of the stories and pose questions in my mind about the
characters. I enjoy reading biographies about famous people like Charles Dickens and Anne
Frank. Additionally, I enjoy reading short stories and magazines such as; Binah, Ami, and
Mishpachah. I am fascinated by the astounding articles in the Ami. For example, the article about
a "Journey to North Korea", makes me feel as if I had experienced it myself. Academic reading

Nothing teaches us better than literature to see, in ethnic and cultural differences, the richness of the

creativity. Reading good literature is an experience of pleasure, of course; but it is also an
experience of learning what and how we are, on our human integrity and our human imperfection,
with our actions, our dreams, and our ghosts, alone and in a relationship that link us to others, in our
public image and in the secret recesses of our consciousness.
The bond that literature establishes among human beings compels them to enter into dialogue. The
bond also makes them conscious of a...show more content...
Without reading and untouched by literature will resemble a community of mutes and those of
lost expressions afflicted tremendous problems of communication due to its crude and rude
language. This is true for individuals, too. A person who does not read, or reads little, or reads
only trash, is a person who speaks much but he/she will say little words such as curse words,
because his/her vocabulary is lacking in the means for self–expression.
Reading Literature is not only a verbal expression, but also represents a limitation on intellect and
in imagination. It is a poverty of thought, for the simple reason to grasp our knowledge and ask
what is the importance of life? We learn how to speak correctly––and deeply and subtly–– from
good literature and only from good literature. No other discipline or branch of the arts can
substitute for literature in crafting the language that people need to communicate. To speak well,
to have at one's disposal a rich and diverse language, to be able to find appropriate expression for
every idea and every emotion that we want to communicate, is to be better prepared to think, to
teach, to learn, to converse, and also to fantasize, to dream, to feel. In a secret way, words repeat in
all our action, even

Essays About Reading

  • 1. Reflecting on my early memories of reading and writing is difficult. I never identified as a strong reader or writer. In fact, growing up I put little importance on reading and writing because, unlike most other parts of school, I didn't feel very good at it. Therefore, I never gave my experience as a reader or writer much thought and when asked to reflect, my mind went blank then filled with mostly disappointing memories and finally questions of why my mindset was what it was and how I can take action to identify and rectify the same mindset in myself and in my students. Reading My have no early home memories of reading. I always did my homework but I remember lying on my reading logs about how much I read because I wanted to go play outside or I had to do chores and didn't have time. My parents had a very busy schedule between raising four children and working sometimes multiple jobs. When they were home I wanted to spend time with them and what they did was watch TV. Although I believe the lack of books in my home and adult models of readers did not help foster a relationship with reading for me, I do not blame my apathy towards reading on them by any means. My parents always reinforced the importance of and respect for school. Without them I would not be where I am today. But I recognize their limitations and my privilege. I do have memories of reading with my father but it's not how most would assume. In middle school I began helping my father read in English. He had Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Reflective Essay About Reading Reading is important in all aspects of learning. It widens vocabulary, improves imagination, and is how we discover new things. More than anything, reading develops the mind. It is important to begin reading with children at a very young age, to introduce new concepts and words creating a strong basis for the future. Most small children love being read to; they find picture books fun and enjoyable because of the animated pictures and presentation of the words. After each time they read a book, they remember the fun pictures or words, looking forward to the next book. If a good memory of reading is planted in a child, as they grow older not only will reading come more naturally, it will bring more pleasure. I believe the key to successfully getting a student to read is to make it as enjoyable as possible. In reading this article, I was able to relate on a few different levels. I could put myself in the teacher's shoes on some levels, but even more so with the students. In Middle School, one of our reading assignments were reading cards, for which our teacher would pick a new genre each month and we had to read chapter books according to the genre. Reading cards were a tool the students would use to summarize their readings each time they read. The reading cards consisted of a chapter book the teacher chose, each month a different genre. After each section we read, a short summary was to be written and we had to write down and look up any words we didn't know. This was Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Reflection On My Reading Skills Reflection Before taking this class I thought that my reading skills were exceptional, but I was undeniably wrong about that. Now, after taking this class I can say that my reading skills have greatly improved. I now know how to analyze works of art and find new meanings behind the words that I read. Now, with the knowledge on how to use criticism to my advantage, all types of literature will become wide open to me in a sense that I will be able to understand literature in greater detail. I would certainly say that I learned more in this English class than any other English class I have taken so far, even though it was online. I even improved on my grammar throughout the course of these past six weeks. I learned how to write more comprehensive paragraphs and how to write essays that stay on topic as well. Before taking this class I had not read too many poems so I was not too familiar with quoting or citing them. Now, I easily know how to quote a line or stanza without having to look up what to do every time. I would also say that I am far more appreciative of literature, more than ever poetry. Before this class I did not take poetry to seriously as I thought it was silly and for the most part nonsense that was being spat off by crazy writers. Unbeknownst to me I found out quickly just how deep and emotional some poetry can be. I found out awfully fast that poetry is more than just dilly dally writings and the nonsense that I believed it was. Of course, being as old as I Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Essay on The Importance of Reading Reading has at all times and in all ages been a source of knowledge, of happiness, of pleasure and even moral courage. In today's world with so much more to know and to learn and also the need for a conscious effort to conquer the divisive forces, the importance of reading has increased. In the olden days if reading was not cultivated or encouraged, there was a substitute for it in the religious sermon and in the oral tradition. The practice of telling stories at bed time compensated to some extent for the lack of reading. In the nineteenth century Victorian households used to get together for an hour or so in the evenings and listen to books being read aloud. But today we not only read, we also want to read more and more and catch up...show more content... There is then the serious reading undertaken for research and for satisfying one's longing for knowledge. It may be a subject of scientific significance, or a subject of historic or philosophic importance – varying according to the taste of the person. This kind of reading disciplines the mind and trains one for critical and original thinking. There is yet another kind of reading –reading for pleasure. Though serious reading is also a source of pleasure, reading which is devoted mainly to it differs in one respect. It grows upon one, it gives before demanding and it soothes and relieves tension and loneliness. The only kind of reading which neither stimulates thought nor provides knowledge is one which is approached negatively, with the simple motive of escape and of "killing" time. A person who is widely read is able to mix with others: he is a better conversationalist than those who do not read. He can stand his ground. Reading broadens the vision. it is in a way a substitute for travel. It is not possible to travel as much as one would like to and reading can fill in the gap created by the lack of travel. "Reading", as Bacon wrote in his essay. 'Of Studies'. "maketh a full man: conference a ready man: and writing an exact man". Thus a widely–read man is a better conversationalist and is able to see the other point of view. Literature is a form Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Literacy Narrative Essay example At this point in my life I find myself in an interesting predicament regarding my attitudes toward reading and writing; more so towards reading. Years ago I used to love reading books for pleasure but nowadays I find myself reading things that little to no effort to digest. This includes the very basic posts on facebook expressing one's opinion on something or articles and threads on reddit discussing topics I find intriguing. Perhaps it's the severe senioritis that has overcome me as I enter my last semester at Chapman University. As I've gotten lazier I can see it start to reflect in my everyday life. Deep down I still love to read but I rarely find myself getting truly invested into the action unless it relates to something I am very...show more content... You can feed the mind as much as you want and it will never get full of reading. Sadly, I'm not the same person that I was. I guess you could say it's part of growing up. It never really was intentional but it's just the way how it ended up. On the other hand my attitudes toward writing are very different. First let me say that deep down I truly do not like to write. I myself don't personally like to write for leisure or pleasure but rather I write because I believe it is one of the most important aspects of being able to communicate with those around you, both personally and professionally. To put differently, my attitude towards writing is that I write because I need to write and survive in the world around me. I write because I have to, not because I want to. Hopefully this somewhat makes sense. To better explain let me make a comparison. When I am assigned a writing assignment or I am writing because the action is being forced upon me I find myself not enjoying the process and overall the end result is subpar. The perfect example of this would be my junior year in high school when I was enrolled in AP english literature. I dreaded the majority of the class simply because there was so much writing involved in the entire course and therefore I was constantly writing just to get a grade. Being forced to write in such high volume every week for an entire school year was not enjoyable for myself and as a result the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Reflective Essay About Reading At this particular moment, I find myself in an unsure realization with my attitude to reading and writing, even more to reading. I use to love reading, as a matter of fact, I would save my money just to buy new books to read. It would be right to say that I enjoyed reading in earlier years, and now I find myself reading things with no effort to try to understand the true concept of the text. I can still say that deep down I still enjoy reading but I rarely find myself getting truly invested in it's unless it related to something I am familiar with. One of my earliest vivid memories of reading would be during preschool, where the whole class would gather around the colorful circular rug, and one student would pick a book that would be read to the entire class for that day. Dr. Seuss was a very common pick, I remember the teacher reading slowly and showing the pictures, while every student listened with such amazement. Afterwards, we would sit at our tables, which seemed big at that time, and trace our names and letters and numbers, not even realizing that we were taking our first steps into learning the concept of writing. Kindergarten through Elementary school was where I learned the concept, of composing sentences and the principals of basic writing. Throughout those years, I learned how to compose and improve my writing by learning new techniques and rules; this is where the traditional five–paragraph essay was learned. Gammer and spelling were one of my biggest Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Reflection Of Reading And Writing Writing has always been something I dread. It's weird because I love talking and telling stories, but the moment I have to write it all down on paper, I become frantic. It's almost as if a horse race just begun in my mind, with hundreds of horses, or words, running through my mind, unable to place them in chronological order. Because I struggle to form satisfying sentence structure, it takes me hours, sometimes even days, to write one paper. It's not that I think I'm a "bad writer," I just get discouraged easily. Needless to say, I don't think highly of my writing skills. When I was little I loved to both read and write. I read just about any book I could get my hands on, and my journal was my go to for my daily adventures. Although it's...show more content... Project three, Recovery is Possible: Narcotics Anonymous, hit very close to home for me. This was a paper discussing a discourse community, the importance of such, and the niche associated with Narcotics Anonymous. This paper meant a lot to me and I feel honored to have been able to write about such a beautiful thing. Both of these projects needed a lot of work done, but I was able to identify the mistakes and correct them using the skills I mentioned earlier. During the revision process of project one, My Personal Analysis of Repurposing, I was shocked. As I was reading, I was thinking to myself, "who even wrote this?". I made several major revisions in order for it to be ready to showcase. After rereading my draft again and again, I ran into a major dilemma. I broke down the literate practice of organization into three main components: detail oriented, time management, and teamwork. I thoroughly explained how I repurposed detail oriented and teamwork, but time management lacked important information. I added nearly a whole page regarding how I've repurposed managing my time at different places in different ways. Another one of the major changes made was reorganizing the structure of my paper. On my rough draft, I had a very poor introduction. I cut some of it out and reorganized it so everything flows correctly. I also had Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Reflective Essay About Reading I love to read, but it didn't start out that way. When I was in first grade and we are just starting to learn how to read books, I remember being mad because I wasn't in the advanced reading group. The advanced reading group got a different book than everyone in the normal reading level and got to work in a different section of the room. This made me so mad that I decided I didn't want to try which, when I look back on it now was not the smartest thing I could've done. I knew how to read but it never really appealed to me, especially since I wasn't the most proficient reader. And why would I want to read a book when I could play with a Bratz doll? My feelings on reading never really changed until I got into the fourth grade. Of course I, a kid who despised reading, was placed in the one class that had a teacher that expected fifteen minutes of sustained reading every class. During the time she allotted for reading I would sit stubbornly and refuse. My teacher contacted my mother to let her know what was going on in class. She also told my mother that she wouldn't give up on me and that she just had to find something that I was interested in. When the teacher took my class in the library to get new books, she followed me around offering suggestions of what to read. It wasn't until I tried a book from the Lily Quench series that I actually found something that I enjoyed. The book is about a girl who is orphaned and is the last person in her village with the power to slay Get more content on HelpWriting.net

It is a cognitive process of figuring out a symbols in order to construct or derived meaning. Reading is also a process of communicating and interacting with others. It is a means of obtaining language and sharing information. It is said to be one of the ways that can lead to a better future. It requires continuous practice, development and clarification. Also, some books are heavy and bulky. While the advantages of the digital books are the following: it may offer lower costs, it is easier to monitor student progress, and are easier and cheaper to revise when needed. It is easy to carry and compact. They may offer better access to quality texts in the developing world and an easy way to look for what are they searching. For this reason, many schools and colleges around the world have made the performance of digital textbooks a central component of education policy. But in contrast, it also has it disadvantages. By using it, you may adapt the habits of skimming and scanning, which can cause a loss in comprehension and can actually make more difficult to focus. • 10. My love of reading blossomed when I was a child, because my parents showed me how wonderful reading is. There were countless nights when I remember myself as a little girl refusing to go to sleep before 'tucking dad into bed' by reading him a picture book. Not only did I uphold that tradition though, but my mother is a preschool teacher, so she gets really into reading out loud, and she would help me read books such as The Boxcar Children set, The Secret of NIMH and The Chronicles of Narnia weekly until I didn't need help anymore. My favorite books to read on my own were The Magic Treehouse and Geronimo Stilton because I could become so lost in them– pretending that I lived in the world that the books described. In my preteen phase, I would sneak thick chapter books in my room and read all night when my parents...show more content... One of the biggest turning points for me was my eighth grade year, when I failed my first spelling test. That was the first year I actually had to study for spelling tests, and I began to lose hope. I worried that I would never be able to write amazing stories or read experienced books, because I couldn't just 'wing it' anymore. But my eighth grade reading teacher, Mr. Stanley, showed me that I could do amazing things with book talks, presentations, and discussions. I found that towards the end of the year, all I wanted to do was improve myself, because after all, how could I be a teacher if I never learned anything new? I would love to have this scholarship because I aspire to become a middle school language arts teacher. Because even though I had many adult figures in my life that helped instill the love of reading in me, I feel that if I did not have the experience of my middle school language arts teachers making reading 'cool' I would not still love reading as much to this Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. The Importance Of Early Reading Skills Reading is a skill often taken for granted but it is essential in order to progress in life. For a child being able to read well helps them learn new things, give ideas and enables use of imagination. National literacy trust (2015) suggests that children's early language skills can have a major impact on a child's development of literacy skills. Five–year olds with poor language and literacy have a higher risk of underachieving at age seven and beyond. Reading skills encourage more opportunities in life and it can affect a child's wellbeing if they do not achieve this effectively (Finnegan,2015). For a child who is just starting to learn to read, they need sufficient practice in reading a variety of different books to achieve fluency. Reading can be complex and has many different aspects (Burns,1999). It is suggested that children who have problems reading and writing at a young age will find it hard to catch up as they get older and will not reach their full potential as adults, many will withdraw from school or society and some becoming involved with crime (MacBlain,2014). 40 percent of children find learning to read a challenge but with early help, most reading problems can be prevented (Reading Rockets, n.d.). This resource had been created to encourage a child to learn to read through play. It is in the form of a game and it is aimed at helping a child repeat the words that extra practice is needed from a book that has been read. The resource created is a game that incorporates play and praise in which are essential skills to support a child that is learning something new. Games enable all children to develop skills without pressure and are particularly important for children who may be less confident (Lindon, 1993). The 'Let's Read' game can be used for a variety of ages as the words can be changed and personalised depending on the child's reading ability. This game is a good way of helping to teach a child to read and improve on words that they struggle with because it is taught by learning through play, therefore the child is less aware they are learning and it is a fun way to practice. The child is also receiving praise and reward through the star reward sheet that comes with the game. By Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Reflection About Reading Reading Introduction Reading is one of the main skills for learning a language. Reading is a skill that requires learning. It has its own strategies to be mastered. Although reading skills promote at early age by the support of parents, teachers play an important role in varying strategies of learning reading at children. The way I learned English I learned to read English by scaffolding the long words to know which part of speech they are. I started by reading words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs then whole pages. At the start, I realized the mistake I was making by stopping at each difficult word to translate. This interrupted my whole understanding of what I was reading. Then I moved to guessing difficult words from the context. I...show more content... The second strategy is scanning. It is a primarily quick reading through that allows me to break reading into pieces or scaffolding to reach the main ideas. Scanning is to review what you have read to understand your reading. Deconstructing the material of reading is a direct purpose of reading. It allows to get specific details to connect with general ideas to get a full picture of what is being read. The third strategy is summarizing. I used to give the reading passage again but in my own words to make sure to what extent I mastered it. This develops my understanding of the reading material. Then I answer reading questions and try to get answers from my summary and from the original reading material to make sure my summary lacks nothing. Summarizing makes me understand what I am reading using a simpler language. The fourth strategy to learn English reading is discussing. I used to discuss what I read which an adult or a teacher. Discussing my reading will add assurance and full understanding of it. It will make me more able to apply what I read in life through discussing and analyzing looking for positive and negative aspects in the reading passage. Discussion based reading can also be tested through answering questions related to the passage if reading and commenting on them. The fifth strategy is extracting. It is very important to use it for getting information out if visual charts or timetables. I Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. My Reading and Writing Experience over the Years Literacy Narrative: My Reading and Writing Experience over the Years I have never been the type of student who enjoyed reading or writing. I have always found it difficult to express myself by writing narratives, book reports, and any other required assignment. I am far more skilled at speaking or verbal expression in general as I have found over the years that people tend to misunderstand my point if it is written. When I sit to write, I have to think about what I want to say. This is not easy for me as I tend to think about several things at once. Clearing my mind and focusing on the writing task is a challenge in itself. I do not consider myself a strong writer and find it intimidating especially when I know it will be critiqued. The sense of failure when seeing the paper I worked so hard on look like the newest local headline of a recent murder is disheartening for me. I assume I am being overly critical of myself but those feelings seem to be redeemed when I look over the aftermath of what was my wonderful work of mental art. The irony of all of this is I write many different things in my current job. One any given day I draft contracts, amendments, and addendums to name a few. I have learned a great deal from my bosses and mentors which has made me a better writer and more aware of my grammar and proofreading of work. My Vice President is an attorney and English major with a keen ability to find the minutest errors. I try to take any criticism Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. My Journey : My Reading Journey My reading journey began at a very early age and was kickstarted by my family. My mother and father encouraged me to read as soon as I could do it by myself. However, I am unable to give all the credit to my parents. As soon as I could read I devoured books at a break neck speed whenever I got free time. Books became an island of fantasy where I would take my private jet mind to whenever I was stressed. I may have been exposed to reading by my family, but I lovingly drowned myself in a sea of literature as soon as I was able. My first memory as a reader was of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" but ironically, I did not read it. My mother read small portions of the book every night before I went to sleep. This is truly the beginning...show more content... Slightly at my sisters urging, mostly to satiate the endless void I had for books, I took on the mountain of a book "Brisinger" in fourth grade. This was a big step for me at the time because I had never read a book that long and needed to test the boundaries of my curiosity. I read "Brisinger" in, what felt like a record, 3 months. This was the peak of my elementary reading ventures and I had conquered it. I became a more confident, excited, and deep reader moving forward. My middle school years were not as eventful as a reader. I almost singularly read fiction and didn't grow much as a reader besides the level at which I read increased. This is the time at which I started to have less free–time, therefore less reading time. I still loved reading, however it wasn't as easily accomplished in middle school compared to elementary school. I entered freshmen year as a confident reader, choosing "The Kite Runner" for a class project. That book was very mature and had dark themes, which I was unfamiliar with. "The Kite Runner" tore the veil from my eyes and forced me to deal with unhappy truths in the world which I didn't enjoy. This distaste led me to take a break from reading for freshman year. However, my passion for books was stirred when I read "In Cold Blood". It was the first non–fiction book I supremely enjoyed and helped introduce me to a new genre. Finally I read "East of Eden" and enjoyed it. This book on my ideal bookshelf symbolizes that I Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Essay on Reading Comprehension Reading Comprehension In any interaction with a text, the text is pretty much useless unless the reader can comprehend the meaning of that text. Since narrative, expository, and poetic texts all have different reasons for being written, and different forms of presenting the text, different strategies are needed to comprehend these texts. There are also many reading strategies that can be used for all of these types of text. In order to describe strategies to help develop activities that facilitate comprehension of narrative, expository, and poetic texts one must first have an understanding of what comprehension means, they then need a better understanding of how the human brain works. "Comprehension is a creative, multifaceted...show more content... If there are no changes in long–term memory, nothing has been understood or learned." (Sweller, 2005) The competent comprehender is a skilled reader. "Skilled readers are those who actively and automatically construct meaning as they read; they are self–motivated and self–directed; they monitor their own comprehension by questioning, reviewing, revising, and rereading to enhance their overall comprehension." (Douglas Fisher, 2011) One other skill that is crucial to being a skilled reader and comprehending text is the fluency with which a student reads. Teaching fluency skills is a very important aspect of helping a student comprehend what they are reading. If a student is using all of the short term memory decoding words and sentence stucture, there is very little left to work on the process for gaining meaning from the text. The most common strategies used to improve fluency are; adding vocabulary to the students long–term memory, activating background knowledge (schema), modeling, and having the student read. So what are other strategies that can be used to help the non–skilled student comprehend what they are reading? "The most important comprehension strategies for struggling readers are activating background knowledge, determing importance, summarizing, questioning, visualizing and monitoring." (Tompkins, 2010, p. 267) Background knowledge helps the student with both fluency and the understanding Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Reading Literacy Essay Reading is a basic skill that students develop and improve throughout their whole life. There will always be room to improve a person's reading skills; whether they be nine or ninety, one's brain will always be building and making new connections and like Jonathan Seagull, one should strive to improve. There was one assignment in particular that I felt was the most fitting for what the Reading Literacy chart asks for. In this activity students were given a prompt and 1 hour to complete an essay arguing a point. They were also given articles which the students could read, research, and take whatever information they feel would be best fitting for proving their argument. As well as having to read articles they were also asked to connect their Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 18. Personal Narrative– My Love of Reading and Writing Reading and writing has always played a vital part in my life. From toddler to adult, pre–elementary to college, I've managed to sharpen both skills to my liking. However, even though it significantly helped, schooling was not what influenced me to continue developing those skills into talent. Many different things shaped and influenced my learning, and now reading and writing have become the safety net of my life. I know that even if I have nothing else in the future, I'll still have my talent and knowledge. To ensure my success, I hope to further develop those skills so that I may fulfill my wishes. They weren't too unlike the scripts of computer games or the own stories I came up with on my own, but books actually had the action and emotional aspects written out. And again, while my peers were reading things about growing up, things that had morals and would teach valuable lessons (I remember one book about a shoplifter who had to do community service at an animal shelter), I read real fiction: Jurassic Park, Dragonriders of Pern, Lord of the Rings... Stuff of fantasy and science–fiction that let my mind stray from reality. Stuff that kept my imagination alive while I was being forced to learn multiplication and the names of countries. Of course, my teachers encouraged me to keep reading, as long as I wasn't doing the reading in the middle of their lectures. But it wasn't because of their influence, however, that kept me interested in books. It was because I loved it. It put pictures into my head and made me think. So I kept reading. But even then I knew reading wasn't enough... Yes, the stories were fascinating, but they weren't what I wanted. Back then I wasn't sure what I wanted, but as middle school came to a close, I found it. All eighth graders had to take a career class to determine what we wanted to be when we grew up. I remember telling my teacher that I wanted to be an archaeologist and the strange look she Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Reflection On Academic Reading Reading is one of my favorite pastimes. I am a tuned–in Reader, and I appreciate well written biographies. Enjoyable reading takes my mind off school work and relaxes me. I enjoy academic reading as well, but sometimes it is intense and requires much concentration. Moreover, I am a tuned in reader when it comes to academic subject's such as; psychology, nutrition, health and history. Every spare moment I have; I pick up a book or magazine, and get carried away, by the text. I visualize the story and its' characters as if, the story is taking place right next to me. Furthermore, I predict the outcomes of the stories and pose questions in my mind about the characters. I enjoy reading biographies about famous people like Charles Dickens and Anne Frank. Additionally, I enjoy reading short stories and magazines such as; Binah, Ami, and Mishpachah. I am fascinated by the astounding articles in the Ami. For example, the article about a "Journey to North Korea", makes me feel as if I had experienced it myself. Academic reading gives me a sense of accomplishment and joy. Generally, I am a tuned in reader, when it comes to reading information. When I am reading, I analyze and visualize the ideas of the passage. When I stop and think of what I am reading, it enhances my level of comprehension. My appreciation is also increased, to understand and learn new information. • 20. Essay on Why Read Literature? Nothing teaches us better than literature to see, in ethnic and cultural differences, the richness of the human patrimony, and to prize those differences as manifestation humanity's multi–faceted creativity. Reading good literature is an experience of pleasure, of course; but it is also an experience of learning what and how we are, on our human integrity and our human imperfection, with our actions, our dreams, and our ghosts, alone and in a relationship that link us to others, in our public image and in the secret recesses of our consciousness. The bond that literature establishes among human beings compels them to enter into dialogue. The bond also makes them conscious of a...show more content... Without reading and untouched by literature will resemble a community of mutes and those of lost expressions afflicted tremendous problems of communication due to its crude and rude language. This is true for individuals, too. A person who does not read, or reads little, or reads only trash, is a person who speaks much but he/she will say little words such as curse words, because his/her vocabulary is lacking in the means for self–expression. Reading Literature is not only a verbal expression, but also represents a limitation on intellect and in imagination. It is a poverty of thought, for the simple reason to grasp our knowledge and ask what is the importance of life? We learn how to speak correctly––and deeply and subtly–– from good literature and only from good literature. No other discipline or branch of the arts can substitute for literature in crafting the language that people need to communicate. To speak well, to have at one's disposal a rich and diverse language, to be able to find appropriate expression for every idea and every emotion that we want to communicate, is to be better prepared to think, to teach, to learn, to converse, and also to fantasize, to dream, to feel.
