Comparing Explorer Vs. Safari
Comparing Explorer vs. Chrome vs. Firefox vs. Safari The internet is part of everyday life for
most people. It connects people to information that can be accessed from the web any time, any
day of the week. To connect to the internet, an individual needs a thing called a web browser, or
browser for short (Beal). A browser is defined as a software application used to locate, retrieve, and
display content on the World Wide Web
, including web pages, images, video, and other files
(Beal). There are many different types of browsers that are used to connect to the internet, but in
this paper only four browsers will be talked about. These four browsers are some of the well
known browsers which include: Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. In this research paper,
these browsers will be compared to each other, comparing some of their benefits and disadvantages.
In 1995, a company called Microsoft introduced their new browser called Internet Explorer1 to the
market. Nearly every single year until 1999, a new version of this browser would appear. In 1999,
something changed, Microsoft decided to integrate itself with Windows 98 Second Edition and
created Internet Explorer 5.0 (Neagle). Around the same time, this browser exceeded 80% of the
web browsermarket share (Neagle). Since Explorer became popular, it became a target to
malicious attacks and viruses on the 7th version of the browser. It was discovered that there was a
flaw that could allow criminals to take control of

The Transformation Of Metamorphosis In Franz Kafka s The...
In Franz Kafka s novella, The Metamorphosis, the main character Gregor Samsa awakes from his
sleep transformed into a bug. As the story develops, not only does Gregor go through the phases
of a metamorphosis but also his family especially his sister Grete. If the novella is about hope,
then it would explain the actions and plot lines introduced to the reader. What is Grete s
metamorphosis? How does she bring new hope to the Samsa family? Is the hope found within
the tragic transformation of Gregor? When I first read the book the only metamorphosis that I
examined was that of Gregor s, however, as I began to analyze each paragraph deeply, Grete s
metamorphosis came into light and revealed a whole new meaning for the title. Grete
transformed from being a young and respectful daughter to being an independent and spiteful
one. At the beginning of the novella, Grete is first introduced like many other characters, she is
the voice behind a wall; on the right side the sister began to sob (17). Kafka allows the reader to
assume that Grete is an anxious and overdramatic person, Grete begins to cry just because
Gregor won t open his door. Kafka again establishes Grete s melodramatic personality with the
use of free indirect speech, And why was she crying? (17). Even though Grete was a childish girl
at the beginning of the story, she was also very caring towards Gregor even after he had shown
himself to the world; But he could never guessed what his sister in her kindness [...] to test his
likings, she brought him a big selection (26). As the novella develops Grete grows as a woman,
and her personality matures. Grete now has taken over Gregor s family duties, and her stature in
the family has risen, We have to get rid of it (47). The use of direct speech gives Grete more
authority than her parents which gives her a lot of independence not only does Grete have more
independence but she also has become more spiteful towards Gregor; At last! to her parents as
she turned the key in the lock (49). The locking of the door shows the reader that Grete no longer
cares for Gregor and has realized that he was a considerable burden. Grete s evolution of actions
from start to end in the novella demonstrates her

Differences And Similarities Between English Language And...
For my research paper, I have chosen to explore the differences and similarities between the
English language and the German language. My interest in this subject area is mainly due to my
own nationality and roots in Germany. My grandma (or should I say meine omi), is from Gersfeld,
Germany and she immigrated to the United States during World War II. My research has conducted
many results that yield both similarities and differences between the languages. One of the most
prominent difference between the two languages is that German is spoken by about 95 million
people worldwide, and is the official language of Germany, Austria and parts of Switzerland
(Shoebottom, 1), meanwhile statistics show that English is the third most widespread native
language in the world, after Standard Chinese and Spanish. It is the most widely learned second
language and is either the official language or one of the official languages in almost 60 sovereign
states (Shoebottom, 1).
Contrary to this large disparity, according to Charles Russ, author of Historical German Phonology
and Morphology, English and German both belong to the Germanic branch of the Indo European
language family (1), this results in numerous similarities between the languages; including the
words: export, partner, blue jeans, computer, teenager, and jet (Garry and Rubino, 244). German
and English also share the same alphabet however, the German language includes the umlauted
letters: Г¤, Г¶, Гј, and the Гџ (scharfes S

Multiobjective optimisation problem A multiobjective problem can be viewed as well and if we
consider a minimisation problem for all objectives functions: m functions to optimize and p
constraints to satisfy. The main goal of all optimisation methods is to find an optimal solution of
those problems, and we should precise that a multiobjective problem have many objectives to
optimize these functions are mutually contradictory, so to make a comparison between solution
and an other one, we should describe a relation to made this appreciation, The Pareto Dominance
relation can do this. Considering a minimisation problem, lets u and v two vectors. A solution is
an Pareto optimal solution if and only if it doesn t exist an other admissible solution x where f(x)
dominate . So a solution of an Multiobjective problem is a set of solutions which they are not
dominated by any other solutions, we call this set the Pareto front 2 Related work In this

The Pros And Cons Of Child Labor
Before the 20th century, child labor was common and expected in poorer households. Child
labor wasn t made illegal in the US until 1938. Following the Fair Labor Standards Act, illegal
child labor includes minors under sixteen, working dangerous jobs, and are only allotted a
certain amount of hours. Children under sixteen can work if it is a family business and not a
deemed dangerous job. Some of the countries currently with the worst amount of child labor are
Zimbabwe, Pakistan, and Somalia. The less developed countries have child labor still either
because they need it or can t enforce it. Working while in school is considered a good way to get
into life. But it can also be a hindrance on school. There end up being two major problems when
combining work and school go to school and don t work very much, or go to work instead of
school. Attendance of either activity is affected by the other. There isn t enough time to fully
participate in both. On top of attendance, homework is added and requires more time, still. To
combine all three and save time in the future, school related jobs are available. Internships and
subject specific jobs allow youth to get work experience and further education. But school related
jobs aren t as easy to get as jobs at fast food or retail. Working during school can be stressful and
time consuming for students, causing their schooling to lack, or it can further it more. Stress is a
strong work related factor. Young people already have a lot

Apostle Peter And The Last Supper
In Gabriel Sabloff s Apostle Peter and The Last Supper, Sobloff portrays a faithful and powerful
biblical story of dedication, forgiveness, prayer and a message that anything is possible if we
have God in our hearts. This film, stars Robert Loggia, Bruce Marchiano, and Laurence Fuller. This
story is set in Rome in 670 A.D, when Christians were being persecuted for their faith. The Apostle
Peter relives the time he spent with Jesus, from the inspirational Last Supper to the Garden of
Gethsemane. This movie is not only about Jesus, but it also describes the personalities of the
apostles themselves.
In the movie, Apostle Peter has been imprisoned for his believes, he is sentenced to die by
crucifixion. The emperor has announced that followers of Christ should be hunted and persecuted
for their beliefs. While in jail Peter tells the story of Jesus to a young guard named Martinian
(Laurence Fuller) who is more interested in learning about Jesus than he lets on. Though Martinian
risks everything by fraternizing with the Christian prisoner he pressures Peter to tell him of Jesus,
His Message, and his journey with Jesus.
One of the differences between the movie and the Bible is the fact that only the 12 disciples were
present in Jesus Sermon on the Mount when the Bible describes the scene as being crowds
gathering, Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His
disciples came to him, and he began to teach them. (Matt 5:1).

Alcoholic Case, A Perfect Day For Bananafish, And A Rose For
The short stories An Alcoholic Case, A Perfect Day for Bananafish, and A Rose for Emily show
that the American Dream is unattainable. The main characters in these stories were unable to
overcome challenging obstacles in their lives, which becomes problematic to attaining the
American Dream. J.D. Salinger presents the character Seymour Glass, in the short story A
Perfect Day for Bananafish, who wants to live his life in innocence and purity but is forced to
deal with the reality of being an adult. After the war, Seymour developed mental disorders which
caused him to become detached and no longer be accepted in adult society. For instance, Seymour
becomes outraged with a woman in the elevator he accuses of staring at his feet. I beg your pardon.

Scott Fitzgerald reveals in the short story An Alcoholic Case that some challenges are
remarkably difficult to overcome. For example, the nurse becomes fed up with the cartoonist
because she feels it is hopeless to help him if he does not want to help himself. It was so utterly
senseless as she put a bandage on her finger where she had cut it while picking up the glass she
made up her mind she would never take an alcoholic case again (Fitzgerald). When the cartoonist
felt he would never get better, he came to the decision that he wanted to die and there was
nothing the nurse could have done to stop him. She knew death she had heard it, smelt its
unmistakable odour, but she had never seen it before it entered into anyone, and she knew this
man saw it in the corner of his bedroom; that it was standing there looking at him while he spat
from a feeble cough and rubbed the result into the braid of his trousers. It shone there crackling for
a moment as evidence of the last gesture he ever made (Fitzgerald). These quotes show that the
nurse had a hard time taking care of the cartoonist as he had difficulty overcoming his alcohol

The Effects of the Plague on Fourteenth Century Europe and...
The 14th century was an era of catastrophes. Some of them were man made, such as the Hundred
Years War. However, there were two natural disasters either of which would have been enough to
throw medieval Europe into real Dark Ages . The Black Death that followed on the heels of the
Great Famine caused millions of deaths, and together they subjected the population of medieval
Europeto tremendous struggles, leading many people to challenge old institutions and doubt
traditional values. These calamities altered the path of European development in many areas. In his
essay called An Essay on the Principle of Population , the English political economist Thomas
Malthus (1766 1834), stated that since production increased arithmetically... Show more content on

Caffa was probably not the only port the plague passed through en route to Europe, but it would
forever be the place said to be where the pestilence originated. As soon as the citizens realized
what horrible sickness had come from these ships, they expelled them from the port but it was
too late. Hundreds of the ships rats had scurried down the mooring ropes tied to the docks. The
fleas (Xenopsylla cheopis (oriental rat flea) that these infected vermin hosted were the real
carriers of the disease. As the infected rats died off, the fleas would seek any other warm
blooded host; which included man. There are no accounts of life in the besieged port, but there
is enough information to suggest what Caffa s final days may have looked like. John Kelly
writes, As the death toll mounted, the streets would have filled with feral animals feeding on
human remains, drunken soldiers looting and raping, old women dragging corpses through
rubble, and burning buildings spewing jets of flame and smoke into the Crimean sky. There
would have been swarms of rodents with staggering gaits and a strange bloody froth around their
snouts, piles of bodies staked like cordwood in public squares, and in every eye, a look of wild
panic or dull resignation. The disease spread throughout Europe with astonishing speed and fatal
consequences. By January 1348, the plague was in Marseilles. It reached Paris in the spring,

Cold Fusion Research Paper
Cold Fusion Research Paper
As the world becomes more aware of the growing need for a more abundant energy supply, one
energy source has been swept under the carpet and virtually ignored. This source is cold fusion.
Cold fusion is:
A reaction that occurs under certain conditions in supersaturated metal hydrides (metals with lots of
hydrogen or heavy hydrogen dissolved in them). It produces excess heat, helium, and a very low
level of neutrons. In some experiments the host metal has been transmuted into other elements. Cold
fusion has been seen with palladium, titanium, nickel and with some superconducting ceramics.

If they had gone to the community before the press, a new scientific discovery might have been
developed and researched, however there are only a few believers in cold fusion that are still
researching it today.
A general way physicists determine if a reaction is nuclear or chemical is via tritium (an isotope of
hydrogen) production. Chemical reactions do not produce tritium, while most nuclear reactions do.
It is important to note that some forms of fusion (nuclear reaction) can occur where tritium is not
produced. (Matejowsky) Pons and Fleishmann claimed to produce a few tritium atoms, but their
claimed results were never replicated because they did not publish their experiment. The exact
method they used was not replicated until it was too late and cold fusion already had a bad name
and been renounced. Even once the method they used had been reproduced the results were not
consistent enough to convince the community. This resulted in the scientific community believing
the entire idea and concept of cold fusion to be a hoax. As a result, any young scientists entering
the community were turned away from cold fusion as was observed at the Seventh International
Conference on Cold Fusion. The younger ones had bailed years ago, fearing career damage from
the cold fusion stigma. (Platt) Most scientists that thought the possibility of cold fusion was real
either left it

Idol In The Prince
The main influence on society are the people with the most power, who the average everyday
person aspires to be. What makes someone an idol ? An idol is a person or thing that is greatly
admired, loved, or revered; a person who individuals yearn to be. People have a need to seek
themselves in others, it is a characteristic of human nature to want to belong and fit in. This is what
can make an idol or celebrity so influential and powerful. People admire people of power because
they have traits, values and qualities that the average person wishes to possess and replicate in
themselves. Idols must have admirable traits in order to maintain their high profile meaning.

The ideal idol gained their power through being remarkably intelligent and liable. Machiavelli is
the perfect example of this, gaining his power through being a political leader, accessible for
people to seek themselves in. This justifies people s need for power, and therefore envying
Machiavelli, due to his political power. Machiavelli influences the modern political science we
still use today, and continue to pave his paths. His book, The Prince uses Renaissance values
and applies them to politics, intriguing most everyone. His book targets powerful men, teaching
them how to gain and maintain power. It is not at all necessary for a prince to have all the good
qualities which I have named, but it is necessary to seem to have them (Machiavelli). Although
Machiavelli gained his power, not every man can, to this extent, Machiavelli is saying that in
order to build the status of an idol, you must project the idea of power. It is of known fact that
people with power are admired, thus, Machiavelli wrote a book teaching individuals how to gain
power, and become and idol themselves. This allowed Machiavelli to create a stir and shock the
Western world (ABC Clio), and become the idol that we know him as today. Machiavelli is the
turning point where men start to value power, seeking to find Machiavelli in

The Importance Of Light And Darkness In Heart Of Darkness
Joseph Conrad uses light and darkness in Heart of Darkness to demonstrate that humans are not
innately evil but rather a mixture of the two. The good then light can be overpowered by the evil
then darkness when the characters refuse to see the value of the individual. Conrad goes on to show
that lightcan embody evilinstead of goodness similar to how Dave Eggers uses light and darkness in
The Circle. Through this juxtaposition, both Conrad and Eggers highlight the ignorance and refusal
of the main character to see the evil within or the evil around.
Conrad focuses on the morality of man, his capability to discern right from wrong, and the
actions he makes in response to that understanding; however, there is a point where there is no
longer a way to return to the good. In conjunction with Marlow s journey in which he sees the
gradual growth of darkness, the darkness grows within the heart of those making the journey. The
mutual growth is because Africa itself, with its forests, its heat, and its mysteries, is only a symbol
of the larger darkness, which is in the heart of man ( Heart of Darkness 111). By the time a person
is in the heart of the jungle, the immorality has practically demolished any remaining good. One
such person is Kurtz who foolishly expose[s] himself to the wild irresistible allure of the jungle
and lo! the darkness [finds] him out ( Heart of Darkness 109). The jungle draws out Kurtz s malice
and greed until it consumes him entirely and his

The Consumption Of The Livestock Industry
Have you ever realized that grain fed to livestock could be used to feed starving children? Plump,
hormone injected cattle feed on grain and drink precious purified water while frail, emaciated
children with bacteria swollen stomachs scrounge for food in the streets of Ethiopia, their sunken
eyes and cracked lips manifesting their chronic dehydration. Livestock production is causing more
ethical problems that most realize. In addition to contributing to the starvation of children, the
livestock industry is a major culprit in terms of the unscrupulous treatment of animal as well as the
destruction of the environment and its natural resources. The cattle themselves are often kept in
overcrowded, unsanitary living conditions. Moreover,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Bonnie Liebman s Nutrition Action Health Letter cover story he states: About 60 to 70 percent
of soybeans and a slightly higher percentage of corn goes for animal feed rather than as feed for
humans or other uses. Distressing findings in the study prove food that could potentially save lives
is being grown to feed cattle that are likely going to be eaten by fast food restaurant frequenters.
Each time an American consumes a hamburger from McDonalds they are not only wasting money
on a ninety nine cent greased heart attack, but are also potentially starving a child. The statistics
prove that individuals can certainly make a tremendous difference in world hunger. Some may
argue that such restaurants provide essential employment opportunities, or that livestock industry
workers need their careers as well. However, complete abstinence from meat isn t the only option to
solving the issue. For example, if families in the US chose not to eat it on Meatless Mondays, the
amount of grain used to feed cattle could be reduced drastically. Hence, vegetarianism can
certainly have a considerably positive impact on such issues. David Pimentel, professor of
ecology in Cornell University s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, states, If all the grain
currently fed to livestock in the United States were consumed directly by people, the number of
people who could be fed would be nearly 800 million. Thus, it becomes

Reasons for Devotion to Hindu Goddesses
Reasons for devotion to Hindu goddesses Hinduism portrays feminine divinity in a more exalted
way than most other religions do. Though Hindu goddesses are usually depicted as consorts, wives
or companions to a Hindu god, cases exist in which they are worshipped independently; Tantrism
for example, where it is believed that women posses more spiritual power than men, thus men can
achieve divinity through union with a woman( Tantrism ). Most villages reinforce the mother
aspect of goddesses and worship them individually as their protector, regarding them as having
originated in the area and thus being tied to the health and prosperity of the village (Caldwell).

Kali then proceeds to kill all the asuras in a frenzied manner, later offering the heads of their
leaders Chanda and Munda to Durga. Her second appearance is in the follow chapter, where she
battles Raktabija, and assures success by sucking all of his blood so he could not reproduce
anymore, per Durga s command, while she slayed him ( Devimahatmya ch. 7 8). Another myth
ties Kali with Parvati, telling of an army of demons that threatens the safety of the world. Men
cannot slay them, and so Shiva calls for his wife to aid them in battle. Parvati accepts the
responsibility, swallowing the poison stored in Shiva s throat and morphing into Kali. However,
she becomes too drunk with the poison and, after defeating all the demons, threatens to destroy
the world herself with her berserk dance. In an attempt to subdue his wife, Shiva then lays on the
floor in front of Kali, who in her delirious state does not notice his presence and steps on him.
Shamed that she had showed such disgraceful behavior, she bites her tongue in humiliation. The
last scene of the above tale is illustrated in a lot of imagery, and while the tale itself has a lot of
variations, many Hindus will arrive at the same resolution. It is in this perception that many
contradictions lie. Another question rises, What does Kali s tongue biting really mean? Most
Hindus will claim that it is to show shame, which is what the action means in Bengali culture,

Martial Arts And Physical Fitness
Many families look for opportunities to combine play with physical fitness. Often, these types of
family fitness activities center around biking or hiking together or swimming in the lake during the
summer. However, there are many reasons why these families should consider taking up the martial
arts as one of their family activities. The benefits are many, and they go beyond physical fitness
alone.
Weight Control
While there s no doubt that a martial art like jujitsu or karate has some emotional and spiritual
benefits, people often take up these types of sports to benefit from the physical training aspect of
them. According to the RA BJJ website, these types of fitness activities are better than team sports
for kids.
Taking training in a martial art of some sort allows families to get physically fit and to lose
weight together. Training to become a martial artist works the heart and lungs and the muscles as
well as helping to develop coordination. These types of sports are total body workouts that also
happen to give their practitioners an improved reflex response as well as helping to instill values
and morals.
Self Defense
According to martial artist, Ricardo Almeida, self defense counts as the main reason why people
take up the martial arts. Although many people sign their boys up for training in these arts, the
whole family can benefit from learning an art like krav maga or tai chi (as a martial art, not a
relaxation art). Almeida suggests that women who learn to

There are myriad of point of my support in favor of conformity. The most conspicuous one is that

Another scene which speaks a lot about Dr. Prentice s state of mind is when he talks to his
parents on the phone both at the airport and in the study of Mr. Drayton. He s clearly
uncomfortable while he is telling his parents about the lady in his life. The facial expressions,
nervousness and sweat on his forehead all suggest that he is uncomfortable. In fact he s not
comfortable about telling them that she s not African American on the phone and prefers a less
confrontational way of doing so by writing to them about it. After news has been broken to both
Mr. and Mrs. Drayton, their first conversation about the recent development is in Mr. Drayton s
study. First thing to observe is that when they are with each other they are much more relaxed and
completely comfortable with each other. They are not shy of expressing their feelings to each
other and in fact for the first time Mrs. Drayton expresses her approval or atleast a no objection to
the marriage. She is proud of her daughter s choice and the fact that the values that they have taught
her have not gone amiss in their daughter. It s during this conversation that Dr. prentice enters the

Song Of Myself By Walt Whitman Analysis
In section fifteen of Walt Whitman s poem Song of Myself, Whitman makes working Americans
the subject of most of his sentences while sparingly using concepts, instead of people, as subjects
on other sentences. Most of the non living subjects are closely tied to the concepts of Life and
Death, Time, and Nature. By using nonliving conceptual subjects to contrast concrete images of
working Americans, he demonstrates that though working Americans control society, Life and Death
, Time, and Nature control working Americans. Most of the lines depict American citizens in
different roles, all unique puzzle pieces completing their society, even if their impact is more idle
than ambitious. For example, Whitman describes the idler members of society as the married and
unmarried children [who] ride home to their thanksgiving dinner and the lunatic [who] is carried at
last to the asylum, but they are a part of the whole nonetheless. Whitman describes more ambitious
people as the deckhands [who] make fast a steamboat and the floormen [who] are laying the floor,
in contrast to the idler people, but still just as equal in importance. All of the living, working
American subjects of the sentences hold an equal value in Whitman s eyes, but in contrast, the non
living subjects, though used infrequently, represent higher powers over society. The first concept
Whitman describes with non living subjects in sentences is the cyclicity of life and death. Whitman
mentions The malformed

6. What is the typical stock investment when investing cash for strategic reasons?
A company might purchase an interest in another company in order to establish a presence in a
specific industry or might attempt to purchase a large but not controlling interest in another
company to generate influence over others. Sometimes, companies purchase stocks of other
companies in an unrelated industry they might be interested in entering.

Lenders will charge higher interest rates than for conventional mortgages as they seek to

Banks became increasingly worried about both the value of their own mortgage books and
particularly the value of the mortgage securitised investments they had bought from other
institutions As a result they became reluctant to lend to other banks in the short term money
markets. This crisis of confidence led to major liquidity problems for many banks and insurance
companies worldwide. Liquidity means the ability of institutions, including banks, to meet their
short term obligations including repayment of short term loans.
The oil price eventually peaked at $147 per barrel in mid 2008.
How did the crisis develop during 2008?
The Bank of England had to provide financial support to the Northern Rock Building Society in
the latter part of 2007, to prevent a run on the society s cash by depositors. It became necessary to
formally nationalise Northern Rock in February 2008 (i.e. the Government became its major
shareholder, having used taxpayers money to support it). Early in 2008 a major US investment

Money Laundering
Throughout history, America and other global economies have consistently battled for equality and
fairness in their country. Many new legislations and laws have been implemented and added
throughout the years to adapt to the new technological advances each market has encountered. Even
so, the question of ethics has been raised weighing whether or not each new law meets the ethics in
business and morality. One important obstacle that is still at the forefront of new legislation and
posed for ethical evaluation is money laundering. Money laundering has survived the years through
questions of morality and lawfulness by adapting to rigorous restraints and finding new ways to
manifest itself in different segmentation forms of trade.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His beliefs are opposite of the general population. His overall view is that money laundering is
not a major crime and that we have imposed a form of double jeopardy for those violating these
particular crimes. He also believes that we should lessen the consequences because he believes
they are not linked to other crimes. Many illegal activities have been encouraged with money
laundering. It is much easier on our government to find perpetrators if money laundering was
absolved. By money laundering being absolved, our government would pick up on traffickers
easier because they would have no way of accounting for their large and unexplainable income. With
our government having specialty government services like the Internal Revenue Service, drug
traffickers would be detected faster because of unexplained purchases that are higher than their
recorded yearly income. Once that occurs the government would be able to isolate large
expenditures that traffickers usually use their funds for. Some examples would be lavish vehicles,
extravagant personal residences and large investments. To combat money laundering, FAFT issued
the 40 Recommendations in 1990 and revised

E. E. Cummings Essay
E. E. Cummings: A Man of Poetry
The background of E.E. Cummings, who was a distinctive, American poet, greatly influenced his
literary achievements in poetry. This can be seen in the experiences of his early childhood.
amp;#8220;Cummings was born Edward Estlin Cummings in Cambridge, Mass., on Oct. 14, 1894
;(Ulanov 565). He was born into wealthy and creative surroundings. amp;#8220;Dr. Cummings was
a woodsman, a photographer, an actor, a carpenter, an artist amp;#8211; and talented in all that he
undertook. Mrs. Cummings [however] was a shy woman who overcame conventional influences to

After a lifetime of literary achievement, amp;#8220;Cummings died in Conway, NH, on Sept. 3,
1962 ; at the age of 68 (Ulanov 565). Thus, his early childhood and his later years helped to shape
him into such a well known literary poet.
The themes and techniques used by E. E. Cummings distinguish his unique writing style from all
other average poets of his time. In his writings, Cummings amp;#8217;, expressed many different
themes. amp;#8220;He attacks many aspects of American life, especially Puritanism and
Philistinism amp;#8230; (Cummings, Penguin, 470). In some of his poems, he favored toward the
spiritual outlook of man.
The poems showed his transcendental faith in a world where the self reliant, joyful, loving
individual is beautifully alive but in which mass man, or the man who lives by mind alone, without
heart and soul, is dead (Cummings, Microsoft, 154)
Cummings usually stayed pretty basic with his themes, amp;#8220;A number of Cummings
amp;#8217; poems praise the simple pleasures of nature, love, and spring ; (Ulanov 566). Another
quality Cummings had that pushed him aside from other poets were the techniques he used. By
just writing his name, it singled out him from the others. amp;#8220;In keeping with his

The Burj Khalifa And The Tallest Building
The Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world, and has been since 2009. It is a work place
and a home to many people in Dubai. It was formally known as the Burj Dubai but was changed in
recognition to Sheik Khalifa who paid for the majority of the building s construction. The Burj
Khalifa is located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The building cost 1.5 billion dollars to build.
Construction started on January 6th, 2004 and ended on December 31st, 2009. But 1,325 days
after construction started it was already the tallest freestanding structure in the world. At the peak
of construction, 12,000 workers worked on the building per day. Only three workers died in the
process. The building then opened on January 4th, 2010.
The first skyscrapers were built between 1884 1939. Chicago s Home Insurance Building which
opened in 1884 was considered the world s first skyscraper. It was 138 feet tall. In 1892 Chicago
stopped building skyscrapers taller than 150 feet tall. This allowed New York to start developing
taller buildings. The economic boom of the 1920 s led to the building of the Chrysler Building and
the Empire State Building. As the Great Depression hit, the building of skyscrapers stopped. Since
the end of the Great Depression buildings have become taller and taller until we get to the Burj
Khalifa at 2,722 feet. The Burj Khalifa is made of glass, steel, aluminum, and reinforced concrete.

Essay on Higher Education and Financial Aid from the...
Going to school and trying to afford it can be a financially draining experience, and I know that
from experience. Our government has made many relevant changes thus far to better support
students, but much more can still be done. With rising tuition costs and not enough government aid,
more and more students are forced to take out loans in order to pay for continuing education. These
loans later become a huge financial burden, some totaling near $30,000. If the dream of a college
education is dependent upon access and affordability, how are young people supposed to continue
their education and plan a future, when the cost of tuition is through the roof? Because higher

A four year degree costs students more than $19,000 (Stieger), and in this day and age it is
nearly impossible to survive with only a high school education; being well qualified for a
specific career position is very important to employers. George Leef, author of Why on Earth Do
We Have a Student Loan Crisis ?, says it best when he states that college graduates are somewhat
more reliable and easily trained than people with only high school diplomas ... if there is a large
enough number of [people] with college degrees, employers don t have to bother with people
who don t have them (Leef 29). That being said, I wonder how young people are expected to
obtain some sort of degree, when higher education is nearly impossible for some families to afford.
Although very significant changes have been made by our government offering improved financial
aid to current and future students, more can still be done. Our politicians could increase the Pell
Grant maximum to coincide with rising tuition costs, increase taxes on irrelevant goods and
services to provide students with more direct funding, set up a reward system that would place more
responsibility on the students (rather than themselves), and most importantly, our two main parties
in office need to agree on specific changes.
Appropriate steps have been made by our politicians towards offering enhanced financial support for
students.

Short-Term Premarital Relationships
Running head: SHORT TERM PREMARITAL RELATIONSHIPS
Short term Premarital Relationships

Abstract
Short term premarital relationships are the subject of debate in many families. The idea of a
couple living together without being married is just one of the many problems in relationships
today that end up going through divorce court. Short term relationships do not have the staying
power as one where the couples are getting to know one another for a longer period of time. The
relationship does not have time to manifest into something that will last a lifetime. In this day and
time, short term relationships have a propensity to become a short term life span. This report will ...

Also, I would want to know what they have found out about each other since they have gotten
married and would they change anything. Dr. Ronn Elmore, biographer of How to Love a Black
Man and How to Love a Black Woman points out Living together before marriage is the same as
Nutri Sweet or any other kind of substitute. It doesn t provide the context to really find out the
worth, the values, the character, and commitment of the other person. (Inc., 1998). I believe this
is well said considering that you really do not get to know a person until you have spent some
long quality time with them. Communication cannot be over rated on this issue because without
communication you do not have a relationship. People are much fussier about whom they marry
than whom they cohabitate with, explains Paul Amato, a sociologist at Penn State University
and one of the theory s originators. A lot of people cohabit because it seems like a good idea to
share expenses and have some security and companionship, without a lot of commitment. (Wartik,
2005). Many short term relationships do not last because of the duration of time the couple spent
getting to know one another. I read, Psychologists say the typical infatuation (or lust ) lasts 3 18
months. So, if a total of 19 or more months elapse between meeting and wedding, there s a better
chance it s really love. (Answers.com). Hollywood is making a mock of marriages. There are so

Nursing Shortage in the United States
It is no secret that the United States is currently experiencing a shortage of nurses . The U.S.
Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics ( 2009 ) estimated that more than one million new
and replacement nurses will be needed by 2018 to meet the increased demands of the health care
workforce (). The stressful conditions under which nurses work, due in part to the nursing shortage,
are among the risk factors that contribute to nurses abuse of illicit drugs and alcohol. Nurses are
unique in that they work in an environment where they not only have access to controlled
substances, but also are exposed to critically ill patients, traumatic situations, death and dying, the
stress of which can increase the risk of substance abuse. (Epstein, Burns, Conlon, 2010).
Unfortunately, it is the patient that suffers the most. Substance abuse continues to be a serious
health care concern with millions of American 18 and older using illegal drugs. Substance abuse
occurs across all generations, cultures, and occupations, including nursing. About 1 in 10, or 10
15% of all nurses, may be impaired or in recovery from alcohol or drug addiction(Thomas Siela,
2011). When a nurse is impaired they will not be able to function at their normal capacity, and are
not able to provide quality patient care. They may not be able to think as quickly, and have a
delayed reaction time.

The other side argues that violent media in particular is causing children to act out on the actions
seen within violent media. According to Leo ...the games are often played by unstable youngsters
unsure about the difference (Leo). The evidence, while partially true, fails to explain that only
some children exposed to violent media are acting out on what they see. In addition, this shows
that there is no causation apparent, as only a small percentage of children actually exhibit
behaviors as a result of violent media. The opposition also asserts that the forms of media that are

with this evidence however, including the fact that the comparison between military strategies and
violence in the media is not the same. Military strategies have a purpose to actually remove their
soldier s aversion to killing whereas the media s purpose is to entertain someone. The other side
states that said media, specifically video games, are targeting people to want to kill innocent
people. Leo contests that One ad for a Sony game says: Get in touch with your gun toting,

is that an advertisement doesn t actually cause violent

Graphene s Extraordinary Properties
Graphene is a form of carbon which has recently been receiving a great deal of attention. Some
have come to call it the wonder material due to its many extraordinary properties. Although
isolated in 2004, graphene s properties had been calculated decades earlier. It consists of a single
layer of carbonatoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice. A single sheet of graphene is stronger than
steel and yet remains very flexible, retaining all of its properties despite being bent and unbent
multiple times. It is able to sustain extremely high electric current densities, is impermeable to all

As the name implies, it is graphite which has been oxidized, the most common method being
Hummers method. Graphene oxide is exfoliated graphite oxide. From there, graphene oxide can
be reduced, making reduced graphene oxide, or r GO. r GO is most commonly referred to as
graphene, and it is the subject of most studies done on graphene. It is the most similar to pristine
graphene, and its only difference from pristine graphene is that it sill has some oxygens and
hydrogens left over from the graphite oxide. Despite these defects, pristine graphene s and r GO
s properties are still very similar. (Dreyer et al. 2010) Epitaxial graphene is another common
type. Epitaxial materials consist of a crystalline substance on top of another crystalline substrate.
The most common form of epitaxial graphene is a single layer of graphene over a substrate of
single crystal silicon carbide. Silicon carbide itself has a high electrical properties and is
currently used in many electronics. Combining it with graphene increases its electrical properties.

Adorno And Horkheimer Mass-Deception
Preface
Within this paper I will describe Adorno and Horkheimer best known work in their article, The
Cultural Industry: Enlightenment as Mass Deception. I will describe in great detail their concept of
the culture industry and its mass deception on society. Then, I will compare Adorno and
Horkheimer s view of the creator and receiver to that of the Birmingham School touching on both
their similarities and differences. Lastly, I will explain both schools influence on sociologyand
sociological research concerning mass cultural production and describe how an empirical study
based on both schools would compare.
Horkheimer Adorno The Culture Industry
Theodore Adorno and Max Horkheimer studied Sociology within called the Frankfurt School. The
Frankfurt school was founded in 1924 in Germany at Goethe University. The aim of the Frankfurt
school, according to Horkheimer, was to study the interconnection between the economic life of

Structuralism is based off looking at the structures, or the bigger picture within a study. Since
Adorno and Horkheimer are concerned with the mass deception that is created by the larger
structures in society such as the entertainment industry, an empirical study today would look
similar to that. The study could focus on the use of advertisements to create mass deception but it
would not be a study of individual behavior as so much one of the larger institutions within
society. Methods that would be used would be perhaps a literature reviews, a survey on different
advertisements and their purpose and a survey of people s perceptions of advertisements and their
purpose. For the study the goal is to study the effects of the creator on the social world and its
receivers and study the links between them all, as in the cultural diamond explained in the

Asian American Stereotypes Essay
Pertaining to Tracy Lai s article titled, Asian American Women , Lai discusses how stereotypes
dehumanize people while turning them into objects to be manipulated. Lai touches on the topic of
how Asian people and cultures are stereotyped as being inferior and exotic. The problem that Lai
brings to our attention is that it is a struggle to be an Asian in America due to the fact that Asians
have been denied political, economic and social equality in America. Lai also brings to our attention
the die hard myth that Asians have made it in America, which is far from the truth.
I sense that Lai s argument is extremely effective due to the fact that stereotypes are not only seen
among Asians, they are also seen in many other cultures and ... Show more content on

I have also noticed that there are very few Asian politicians, as well as very few women politicians,
within our culture. I do not know if this problem stems from Asian Americans not having a
historical/authoritative figure like Dr.
Martin Luther King representing African Americans, and Susan B. Anthonyrepresenting woman s
rights to vote. However, I do know that Asians do not receive the same types of opportunities as
others because they have been stereotyped for so long as being inferior. In addition, I feel that the
reason why
Asians may be seen as inferior individuals is because they were one of the last cultures to start a
movement for equality that was inspired by other ethnic cultures.
Because of this somewhat late movement, our culture has not been able to adapt to this change, like
our culture has not adapted to women being paid the same as men.
Lai brought to my attention that Asians are claimed to value education more than other
minorities and Asians are said to have special intellectual affinities for math and science. Lai
proceeded to raise the point that this is a racist rationale because this is implying that other
cultures are not able to succeed in this type of area. For instance, I can relate to this statement
because African American s are said to be dominate in athletics, and they are also believed to have
a higher vertical leap than others. I was offended when I heard this because I received a

Stonewall Jackson Qualities Of Leadership
Elizabeth Helton Stonewall Jackson in the Shenandoah Valley: A leadership analysis Among the
ranks during the American Civil War stood men such as Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant that
will be forever remembered for their leadership qualities. One such man earned his nickname,
fame, and popularity during the Civil War as a Confederate general. Thomas Jackson, more
commonly known as Stonewall Jackson, was a brilliant leader who gained the admiration of all
who came to know him. He gained his popularity from his famous Shenandoah Valleycampaign in
1862. With integrity beyond reproach, he successfully provided direction, purpose (though
skeptical), and motivation to those serving below him during the Valley Campaign.
A native born Virginian, Jackson felt that when it came to war, one must fight with all vigor
(Wilkins 347), and fight with all vigor is what Jackson did until his death in 1863. He rarely slept
or rested, but instead trudged wearily along with his men. On first appearances and perceptions,
Stonewall Jackson was commonly underestimated. For instance, Jackson s brilliance was often
mistaken for insanity. Richard Taylor called Jackson a damned old crazy fool. A staff officer
reportedly said later that when we ordinary mortals can t comprehend a genius we get even with
him by calling him crazy (Gallagher 311). However, the battles fought in the Shenandoah Valley
changed the perception of Thomas Jackson on almost every front.

High School Clubs and Activities
I initiated the creation of the Ecology Club and I was the president of this club. I have enjoyed
watching the Ecology grow in members and volunteers. This team helps garden the school, bring
environmental awareness to others. The club, additionally, has taken care of the landscaping of
Waukesha North, started a school recycling program, and created a raised bed butterfly and
vegetable garden. During the summer, the vegetables are donated to students who need food or the
food pantry. в—‹ Initiated a school recycling program by creating flyers and awareness videos. (09

I wish to realize my full potential as an individual. My industry and motivation to improve can be
shown through my involvement between school and community activities. For instance, two
especially important experiences that I have been involved in are the Ecology Club and
NuGenesis. NuGenesis allowed me to gain more awareness and understanding, fostering the
path for my passion towards environmental conservation. I have used my experiences learned at
NuGenesis in order to initiate an ecology club at my school so that opportunities such as those at
NuGenesis were more accessible to students at North. I was honored to be the president and one
of the initiators of this new school organization. The Ecology Club recognizes the importance of
the world and the concept that every action has a consequence or a reward. One of my school s
worst kept secrets was that we did not recycle any materials at our school. This meant all the
paper teachers and students using were not being recycled. Furthermore, everyday materials such
as numerous types of the drinks that are held in plastic, aluminum, or glass bottles were not being
disposed of properly. Therefore, this club is specifically significant to me, and I hope others,
because it has led the path to many great changes at Waukesha North such as the creation of a of
recycling program at the school. This organization has created a sense of awareness around my
school and within the community. I believe this allows individuals to become more culturally
aware of their surroundings and more understanding or empathetic to certain

Summary Of Second Skins
Second Skins: The Body Narratives of Transsexuality Jay Prosser
Prosser (1998) enters the gender identity conversation with a rather counter intuitive project. At a
time when poststructuralism is busily deconstructing the sex/gender linkage in ways that transcend
the materiality of the subject, Prosser wants to bring the ontological trans body back into the
dialogue by charting the arc of the changing body within transgender narratives. Only by mapping
these transitions in this frame can he describe a complex transsexual experience that breaks free
from the political binaries used by essentialists and poststructuralists, such as literal/deliteralizing,
subversive/hegemonic (16). If the former has been guilty of a dogmatic reliance on a narrow
understanding of biology to describe transsexuals, Prosser argues, then the former is equally guilty
of deconstructing gender to the point of reducing the material body to an inconvenient concept (13).
Although critique of bio determinists is mostly implicit throughout this work (save for Raymond,
whose seminal work is called out numerous times), Prosser focuses the bulk of Second Skins on
analyzing the queer movement s strategies to initially align with, and then appropriate, transgender
subjectivity. He argues from 1998 this is to act as leverage to loosen the fixity of gender
identities...(and) enable affiliation between gay men and lesbians (5). While some of this argument
reads as antiquated two decades later, the idea of

Mexican American Culture Analysis
Mona and I had an interesting talk about how her family mixed the American and Italian cultures
together while they were raising her. She told me that many of the traditions and rituals to
commemorate a death in Italy are not practiced in the United States. This is mainly due to the
villages in Italy being so small, allowing the people to be more familiar with each other. A funeral
in Italydepends a great deal on the family and their financial position in the village. The more
money, the more prestigious and elaborate the event would be. Mona said that the deceased is
kept in a casket at the family home, and that people come to the house to remember the dead.
The family decorates the door of their home indicating that a death has occurred, and they also
put a table outside, in front of the house, with pictures of the deceased on it. They also post
notices all over town telling that a death has occurred, and about the life of the deceased. These
things are the families way of letting the village knows that someone has died. After everyone has
visited the deceased they all go to the church where a service is held, including a full mass. After
the service the pall bearers carry the casket from the church to the cemetery, and everyone follows.
As the procession passes by the people in the village... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The United States have obituaries instead of notices all over town to let people know of a death.
Also, in the Unites States, at a Catholic funeral they have a full mass, as they do in Italy. Mona
said that her belief in God and the afterlife offer her comfort in times of loss. She said that she
only believes that people s souls can go to a better place, heaven, and that there is no hell. This
helps her feel better about where her loved one has gone. Mona feels that she has not beliefs that

Essay on Foucault Panopticism
Panopticism by Michel Focault
Works Cited Not Included
Our society is not one of spectacle, but of surveillance; under the surface of images, one invests
bodies in depth; behind the great abstraction of exchange, there continues the meticulous concrete
training of useful forces; the circuits of communication are the supports of an accumulation and a
centralization of knowledge; the play of signs defines the anchorages of power; it is not that the
beautiful totality of the individual is amputated, repressed, altered by our social order, it is rather
that the individual is carefully fabricated in it, according to a whole technique of forces and bodies.

The persons with the plague (lepers were included in this group) were always observed to
account for their presence. These people were supposed to be present at their windows for
attendance. Where they not present at the time, they were marked as dead. Their family would
be removed, the house would be cleaned out, perfumed, and then, a mere four hours later, people
would move back in. Obviously, the fear of not being observed would be strong in this situation,
a direct result of the drastic measures taken once someone s presence could not be observed.
Though this fear has the opposite motivation of the healthy citizens, who, knowing they are being
watched, are afraid to do wrong, it works on the same basic principle. That if one knows they are
being watched, it remains a constant consideration in their mind, regardless of the presence of an
observer, the fear will always be present.
The Panopticon, a prison described by Foucault, is a machine for dissociating the see/being seen
dyad: in the peripheric ring, one is totally seen, without ever seeing (321, Foucault). This literally
means that in the formation of the panopticon those who are being seen can not see one another
and the one who sees everything can never be seen. That is the most important tool of the
panopticon. Foucault makes this assumption about today s society by saying that we are always
being watched whether we know it or not. One always keeps an eye over their shoulder as a

It connects people to information that can be accessed from the web any time, any day of the week. To connect to the internet, an individual needs a thing called a web browser, or browser for short (Beal). A browser is defined as a software application used to locate, retrieve, and display content on the World Wide Web , including web pages, images, video, and other files (Beal). There are many different types of browsers that are used to connect to the internet, but in this paper only four browsers will be talked about. These four browsers are some of the well known browsers which include: Explorer, Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. In this research paper, these browsers will be compared to each other, comparing some of their benefits and disadvantages. In 1995, a company called Microsoft introduced their new browser called Internet Explorer1 to the market. Nearly every single year until 1999, a new version of this browser would appear. In 1999, something changed, Microsoft decided to integrate itself with Windows 98 Second Edition and created Internet Explorer 5.0 (Neagle). Around the same time, this browser exceeded 80% of the web browsermarket share (Neagle). Since Explorer became popular, it became a target to malicious attacks and viruses on the 7th version of the browser. It was discovered that there was a flaw that could allow criminals to take control of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Transformation Of Metamorphosis In Franz Kafka s The... In Franz Kafka s novella, The Metamorphosis, the main character Gregor Samsa awakes from his sleep transformed into a bug. As the story develops, not only does Gregor go through the phases of a metamorphosis but also his family especially his sister Grete. If the novella is about hope, then it would explain the actions and plot lines introduced to the reader. What is Grete s metamorphosis? How does she bring new hope to the Samsa family? Is the hope found within the tragic transformation of Gregor? When I first read the book the only metamorphosis that I examined was that of Gregor s, however, as I began to analyze each paragraph deeply, Grete s metamorphosis came into light and revealed a whole new meaning for the title. Grete transformed from being a young and respectful daughter to being an independent and spiteful one. At the beginning of the novella, Grete is first introduced like many other characters, she is the voice behind a wall; on the right side the sister began to sob (17). Kafka allows the reader to assume that Grete is an anxious and overdramatic person, Grete begins to cry just because Gregor won t open his door. Kafka again establishes Grete s melodramatic personality with the use of free indirect speech, And why was she crying? (17). Even though Grete was a childish girl at the beginning of the story, she was also very caring towards Gregor even after he had shown himself to the world; But he could never guessed what his sister in her kindness [...] to test his likings, she brought him a big selection (26). As the novella develops Grete grows as a woman, and her personality matures. Grete now has taken over Gregor s family duties, and her stature in the family has risen, We have to get rid of it (47). The use of direct speech gives Grete more authority than her parents which gives her a lot of independence not only does Grete have more independence but she also has become more spiteful towards Gregor; At last! to her parents as she turned the key in the lock (49). The locking of the door shows the reader that Grete no longer cares for Gregor and has realized that he was a considerable burden. • 4. Differences And Similarities Between English Language And... For my research paper, I have chosen to explore the differences and similarities between the English language and the German language. My interest in this subject area is mainly due to my own nationality and roots in Germany. My grandma (or should I say meine omi), is from Gersfeld, Germany and she immigrated to the United States during World War II. My research has conducted many results that yield both similarities and differences between the languages. One of the most prominent difference between the two languages is that German is spoken by about 95 million people worldwide, and is the official language of Germany, Austria and parts of Switzerland (Shoebottom, 1), meanwhile statistics show that English is the third most widespread native language in the world, after Standard Chinese and Spanish. It is the most widely learned second language and is either the official language or one of the official languages in almost 60 sovereign states (Shoebottom, 1). Contrary to this large disparity, according to Charles Russ, author of Historical German Phonology and Morphology, English and German both belong to the Germanic branch of the Indo European language family (1), this results in numerous similarities between the languages; including the words: export, partner, blue jeans, computer, teenager, and jet (Garry and Rubino, 244). German and English also share the same alphabet however, the German language includes the umlauted letters: Г¤, Г¶, Гј, and the Гџ (scharfes S ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Apostle Peter And The Last Supper In Gabriel Sabloff s Apostle Peter and The Last Supper, Sobloff portrays a faithful and powerful biblical story of dedication, forgiveness, prayer and a message that anything is possible if we have God in our hearts. This film, stars Robert Loggia, Bruce Marchiano, and Laurence Fuller. This story is set in Rome in 670 A.D, when Christians were being persecuted for their faith. The Apostle Peter relives the time he spent with Jesus, from the inspirational Last Supper to the Garden of Gethsemane. This movie is not only about Jesus, but it also describes the personalities of the apostles themselves. In the movie, Apostle Peter has been imprisoned for his believes, he is sentenced to die by crucifixion. The emperor has announced that followers of Christ should be hunted and persecuted for their beliefs. While in jail Peter tells the story of Jesus to a young guard named Martinian (Laurence Fuller) who is more interested in learning about Jesus than he lets on. Though Martinian risks everything by fraternizing with the Christian prisoner he pressures Peter to tell him of Jesus, His Message, and his journey with Jesus. One of the differences between the movie and the Bible is the fact that only the 12 disciples were present in Jesus Sermon on the Mount when the Bible describes the scene as being crowds gathering, Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them. (Matt 5:1). Apostle Peter and the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When the cartoonist felt he would never get better, he came to the decision that he wanted to die and there was nothing the nurse could have done to stop him. She knew death she had heard it, smelt its unmistakable odour, but she had never seen it before it entered into anyone, and she knew this man saw it in the corner of his bedroom; that it was standing there looking at him while he spat from a feeble cough and rubbed the result into the braid of his trousers. This source is cold fusion. Cold fusion is: A reaction that occurs under certain conditions in supersaturated metal hydrides (metals with lots of hydrogen or heavy hydrogen dissolved in them). It produces excess heat, helium, and a very low level of neutrons. In some experiments the host metal has been transmuted into other elements. If they had gone to the community before the press, a new scientific discovery might have been developed and researched, however there are only a few believers in cold fusion that are still researching it today. A general way physicists determine if a reaction is nuclear or chemical is via tritium (an isotope of hydrogen) production. Chemical reactions do not produce tritium, while most nuclear reactions do. It is important to note that some forms of fusion (nuclear reaction) can occur where tritium is not produced. (Matejowsky) Pons and Fleishmann claimed to produce a few tritium atoms, but their claimed results were never replicated because they did not publish their experiment. The exact method they used was not replicated until it was too late and cold fusion already had a bad name and been renounced. Even once the method they used had been reproduced the results were not consistent enough to convince the community. This resulted in the scientific community believing the entire idea and concept of cold fusion to be a hoax. As a result, any young scientists entering the community were turned away from cold fusion as was observed at the Seventh International Conference on Cold Fusion. The younger ones had bailed years ago, fearing career damage from the cold fusion stigma. (Platt) Most scientists that thought the possibility of cold fusion was real either left it ... • 12. The Importance Of Light And Darkness In Heart Of Darkness Joseph Conrad uses light and darkness in Heart of Darkness to demonstrate that humans are not innately evil but rather a mixture of the two. The good then light can be overpowered by the evil then darkness when the characters refuse to see the value of the individual. Conrad goes on to show that lightcan embody evilinstead of goodness similar to how Dave Eggers uses light and darkness in The Circle. Through this juxtaposition, both Conrad and Eggers highlight the ignorance and refusal of the main character to see the evil within or the evil around. Conrad focuses on the morality of man, his capability to discern right from wrong, and the actions he makes in response to that understanding; however, there is a point where there is no longer a way to return to the good. In conjunction with Marlow s journey in which he sees the gradual growth of darkness, the darkness grows within the heart of those making the journey. The mutual growth is because Africa itself, with its forests, its heat, and its mysteries, is only a symbol of the larger darkness, which is in the heart of man ( Heart of Darkness 111). Each time an American consumes a hamburger from McDonalds they are not only wasting money on a ninety nine cent greased heart attack, but are also potentially starving a child. The statistics prove that individuals can certainly make a tremendous difference in world hunger. However, complete abstinence from meat isn t the only option to solving the issue. For example, if families in the US chose not to eat it on Meatless Mondays, the amount of grain used to feed cattle could be reduced drastically. Song Of Myself By Walt Whitman Analysis In section fifteen of Walt Whitman s poem Song of Myself, Whitman makes working Americans the subject of most of his sentences while sparingly using concepts, instead of people, as subjects on other sentences. Most of the non living subjects are closely tied to the concepts of Life and Death, Time, and Nature. By using nonliving conceptual subjects to contrast concrete images of working Americans, he demonstrates that though working Americans control society, Life and Death , Time, and Nature control working Americans. Most of the lines depict American citizens in different roles, all unique puzzle pieces completing their society, even if their impact is more idle than ambitious. For example, Whitman describes the idler members of society as the married and unmarried children [who] ride home to their thanksgiving dinner and the lunatic [who] is carried at last to the asylum, but they are a part of the whole nonetheless. Whitman describes more ambitious people as the deckhands [who] make fast a steamboat and the floormen [who] are laying the floor, in contrast to the idler people, but still just as equal in importance. All of the living, working American subjects of the sentences hold an equal value in Whitman s eyes, but in contrast, the non living subjects, though used infrequently, represent higher powers over society. Banks became increasingly worried about both the value of their own mortgage books and particularly the value of the mortgage securitised investments they had bought from other institutions As a result they became reluctant to lend to other banks in the short term money markets. This crisis of confidence led to major liquidity problems for many banks and insurance companies worldwide. Liquidity means the ability of institutions, including banks, to meet their short term obligations including repayment of short term loans. The Bank of England had to provide financial support to the Northern Rock Building Society in the latter part of 2007, to prevent a run on the society s cash by depositors. • 25. Money Laundering Throughout history, America and other global economies have consistently battled for equality and fairness in their country. Many new legislations and laws have been implemented and added throughout the years to adapt to the new technological advances each market has encountered. Even so, the question of ethics has been raised weighing whether or not each new law meets the ethics in business and morality. One important obstacle that is still at the forefront of new legislation and posed for ethical evaluation is money laundering. Money laundering has survived the years through questions of morality and lawfulness by adapting to rigorous restraints and finding new ways to manifest itself in different segmentation forms of trade.... He also believes that we should lessen the consequences because he believes they are not linked to other crimes. Many illegal activities have been encouraged with money laundering. It is much easier on our government to find perpetrators if money laundering was absolved. By money laundering being absolved, our government would pick up on traffickers easier because they would have no way of accounting for their large and unexplainable income. With our government having specialty government services like the Internal Revenue Service, drug traffickers would be detected faster because of unexplained purchases that are higher than their recorded yearly income. Once that occurs the government would be able to isolate large expenditures that traffickers usually use their funds for. Some examples would be lavish vehicles, extravagant personal residences and large investments. To combat money laundering, FAFT issued the 40 Recommendations in 1990 and revised ... It was formally known as the Burj Dubai but was changed in recognition to Sheik Khalifa who paid for the majority of the building s construction. The Burj Khalifa is located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The building cost 1.5 billion dollars to build. Construction started on January 6th, 2004 and ended on December 31st, 2009. These loans later become a huge financial burden, some totaling near $30,000. Short term relationships do not have the staying power as one where the couples are getting to know one another for a longer period of time. Dr. Ronn Elmore, biographer of How to Love a Black Man and How to Love a Black Woman points out Living together before marriage is the same as Nutri Sweet or any other kind of substitute. It doesn t provide the context to really find out the worth, the values, the character, and commitment of the other person. (Inc., 1998). I believe this is well said considering that you really do not get to know a person until you have spent some long quality time with them. Communication cannot be over rated on this issue because without communication you do not have a relationship. People are much fussier about whom they marry than whom they cohabitate with, explains Paul Amato, a sociologist at Penn State University and one of the theory s originators. A lot of people cohabit because it seems like a good idea to share expenses and have some security and companionship, without a lot of commitment. (Wartik, 2005). The U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics ( 2009 ) estimated that more than one million new and replacement nurses will be needed by 2018 to meet the increased demands of the health care workforce (). The stressful conditions under which nurses work, due in part to the nursing shortage, are among the risk factors that contribute to nurses abuse of illicit drugs and alcohol. Nurses are unique in that they work in an environment where they not only have access to controlled substances, but also are exposed to critically ill patients, traumatic situations, death and dying, the stress of which can increase the risk of substance abuse. (Epstein, Burns, Conlon, 2010). Unfortunately, it is the patient that suffers the most. In addition, I feel that the reason why Asians may be seen as inferior individuals is because they were one of the last cultures to start a movement for equality that was inspired by other ethnic cultures. A native born Virginian, Jackson felt that when it came to war, one must fight with all vigor (Wilkins 347), and fight with all vigor is what Jackson did until his death in 1863. He rarely slept or rested, but instead trudged wearily along with his men. On first appearances and perceptions, Stonewall Jackson was commonly underestimated. For instance, Jackson s brilliance was often mistaken for insanity. Richard Taylor called Jackson a damned old crazy fool. • 40. Summary Of Second Skins Second Skins: The Body Narratives of Transsexuality Jay Prosser Prosser (1998) enters the gender identity conversation with a rather counter intuitive project. At a time when poststructuralism is busily deconstructing the sex/gender linkage in ways that transcend the materiality of the subject, Prosser wants to bring the ontological trans body back into the dialogue by charting the arc of the changing body within transgender narratives. Only by mapping these transitions in this frame can he describe a complex transsexual experience that breaks free from the political binaries used by essentialists and poststructuralists, such as literal/deliteralizing, subversive/hegemonic (16). If the former has been guilty of a dogmatic reliance on a narrow understanding of biology to describe transsexuals, Prosser argues, then the former is equally guilty of deconstructing gender to the point of reducing the material body to an inconvenient concept (13). Although critique of bio determinists is mostly implicit throughout this work (save for Raymond, whose seminal work is called out numerous times), Prosser focuses the bulk of Second Skins on analyzing the queer movement s strategies to initially align with, and then appropriate, transgender subjectivity. She told me that many of the traditions and rituals to commemorate a death in Italy are not practiced in the United States. This is mainly due to the villages in Italy being so small, allowing the people to be more familiar with each other. A funeral in Italydepends a great deal on the family and their financial position in the village. The more money, the more prestigious and elaborate the event would be. Mona said that the deceased is kept in a casket at the family home, and that people come to the house to remember the dead. The family decorates the door of their home indicating that a death has occurred, and they also put a table outside, in front of the house, with pictures of the deceased on it. They also post notices all over town telling that a death has occurred, and about the life of the deceased. These things are the families way of letting the village knows that someone has died. After everyone has visited the deceased they all go to the church where a service is held, including a full mass. After the service the pall bearers carry the casket from the church to the cemetery, and everyone follows. As the procession passes by the people in the village... Also, in the Unites States, at a Catholic funeral they have a full mass, as they do in Italy. Mona said that her belief in God and the afterlife offer her comfort in times of loss. She said that she only believes that people s souls can go to a better place, heaven, and that there is no hell. This helps her feel better about where her loved one has gone. • 42. Essay on Foucault Panopticism Panopticism by Michel Focault Works Cited Not Included Our society is not one of spectacle, but of surveillance; under the surface of images, one invests bodies in depth; behind the great abstraction of exchange, there continues the meticulous concrete training of useful forces; the circuits of communication are the supports of an accumulation and a centralization of knowledge; the play of signs defines the anchorages of power; it is not that the beautiful totality of the individual is amputated, repressed, altered by our social order, it is rather that the individual is carefully fabricated in it, according to a whole technique of forces and bodies. (pp.333 34) In the essay, Panopticism, by Michel Focault, he makes the argument ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The persons with the plague (lepers were included in this group) were always observed to account for their presence. These people were supposed to be present at their windows for attendance. Where they not present at the time, they were marked as dead. Their family would be removed, the house would be cleaned out, perfumed, and then, a mere four hours later, people would move back in. Obviously, the fear of not being observed would be strong in this situation, a direct result of the drastic measures taken once someone s presence could not be observed. Though this fear has the opposite motivation of the healthy citizens, who, knowing they are being watched, are afraid to do wrong, it works on the same basic principle. That if one knows they are being watched, it remains a constant consideration in their mind, regardless of the presence of an observer, the fear will always be present. The Panopticon, a prison described by Foucault, is a machine for dissociating the see/being seen dyad: in the peripheric ring, one is totally seen, without ever seeing (321, Foucault). This literally means that in the formation of the panopticon those who are being seen can not see one another and the one who sees everything can never be seen. That is the most important tool of the panopticon. Foucault makes this assumption about today s society by saying that we are always being watched whether we know it or not. One always keeps an eye over their shoulder as a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
