Essay on Meaningful Symbols in the Rye by J.D Salinger
Catcher in the Rye", by J.D Salinger, is about a boy named Holden Caulfield. He thinks the adult
world is a bunch of "phonies." The novel contains many key symbols that help develop the novel,
and to help show Holden Caulfield's point of view on the way he sees the world. Three of these key
symbols include: Holden Caulfield's red hunting hat, the ducks in the Central Park lagoon, and The
Museum of Natural History. One of the most important and recognizable symbols in the novel is
Holden Caulfield's red hunting hat. It symbolizes his uniqueness. The way he wears the hat gives off
an impression that he wants to be very different from everyone around him. He "swung the old peak
way around to the back." This may ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The ducks left the pond. This symbolizes exactly where Holden is in his life right now. He left his
childhood, and is now a part of the adult world. He desperately wishes that he was like the fish in
the pond. He wish he can "just stay there," and be an innocent child forever. Finally, another key
symbol in the novel is The Museum of Natural History. It symbolizes a perfect and pristine world
that Holden desires to live in. Holden enjoys museums because they are unchanging. In a museum,
everything is so peaceful and simple, an ideal place to live for Holden Caulfield. One of his biggest
fears and challenges is change. For example, this is the reason why he is so scared and terrified to
call Jane Gallagher, a girl who he finds very attractive and is one of the few people that Holden
actually admires. He is afraid that if he calls her, she would be a changed person, and that is the last
thing he wants...change. This symbol shows the main purpose of the novel, too. Holden is so afraid
of surrendering to the life of an adult that he has such a difficult time figuring out reality. However,
sometimes he shows his change into maturity by getting drunk and lusting for sex.The Museum of
Natural History represents innocence and purity in the novel. Like the museum, Holden does not
want to change. He wants to be just like the displays in the museum: pristine and permanent. He
believes that everything "should just stay the way they are." Holden wants to

Chris Mccandless Persuasive Speech
Raft rough draft
The message I will be conveying is the importance of embracing failure. My role will be myself as I
understand myself the best. The audience addressed will be my fellow classmates. In the format of a
speech. In Into The Wild American authors define success as the completion of a goal, and failure as
a result of arrogance and disillusionment as the harsh reality caused by failure. Chris McCandless
succeeds in achieving his goals when surviving in the wild. He shot lots of game porcupines,
squirrels and even took down a moose. McCandless had lived off of the food that the wild was
providing him with and he had experienced most of what he wanted to experience. " Positivism, the

Spencer flunking him at all. Holden just accepts the fact that he is going to fail his class. That sort of
stuff isn't relevant to him therefore embracing his own opinion and his "failure".
My second quote takes place towards the middle of the book. Holden has left his school to go out
into the real world he gets himself a hotel room in the boonies of the city. He still doesn't know what
time it is. He gets dressed and goes down to the lobby and finds where the club is.
" I ordered a scotch and soda, and told the guy not to mix it– i said it fast as hell, because if you hem
and haw they think you're under the age of 21 and won't sell you any intoxicating liquor. I had
trouble with him anyway, though. " I'm sorry sir," he said " but do you have some verification of
your age? Your driver 's license perhaps? I gave him this very cold stare, like he had just insulted the

okay" i say. I figured the hell with it. "Bring me a coke." He started to walk away and I called him
back. "Can 'tcha stick a little rum in it or something?" I asked him very nicely and all. " Im very

Taking a Look at Joan of Arc
For centuries women have been discriminated against and perceived as either housewives or
maids. There have been so many stereotypes suggesting that some women actually believe they are
inferior to men. The actuality of this is women are capable of most things men can do and even
more. One of the absolute greatest examples of this theory was Joan of Arc. She started a movement
that most men could never dream of creating. Without her France might have submitted to English
rule centuries ago. Joan of Arc was a courageous, divine woman who altered French history and
even influenced many of today's events. FIrst, before comprehending Joan's significance one must
understand the environment in which she grew up. Almost eighty years before Joan was born,
Edward III of England refused to give respects to Phillip VI of France. As a result of this intolerable
act Phillip VI withdrew the lands of Aquitaine, which were given as a gift, from the English. When
news of this "thievery" reached Edward III he angrily claimed himself king of the French. Conflicts
between the Kingdom of England and the French Empire escalated. By 1337 war was declared and
the Hundred Years' War began. The Hundred Years' War is divided into three different phases
resulting from treaties and conflicts. These three phases are The Edwardian Era War, The Caroline
War, and The Lancastrian War. Joan spent most of her life during The Lancastrian War (English
decline in France). In 1415, King Henry V of England defeated

Character Analysis Of Wonder Woman
In today's society there are many different figures to look up to especially those who seem to posses
special powers like super heroes. Most superheroes are similar but there's one that is very different
from the rest and her name is Wonder Woman. She fights evil while still being a Woman making her
the ultimate hero for any young girl to look up to.
Although he didn't picture a woman in his role of a less masculine superman, the idea of Wonder
Woman was first originally created in 1941 by William Moulton Marston. She was used to be seen
as a World War II hero and warrior by having the strength and power of a man but the grace and
beauty of a lady. Wonder Woman "fears nothing. She stands for justice, equality, and America."
(Arnold–Forster). Since She was built off of honesty and feminism she carries a whip that stands for
the truth and uses it against her enemies leaving her to be the ultimate hero.
Wonder Woman has many hero like qualities that make her such an amazing leader. The very first
quality she possesses is her ambition. Her ambitious actions influence her ways of looking and
acting like a hero. The second major quality Wonder Woman holds is her nobility, because she is
selfless and strives to save the lives of anyone and everyone. Not only is she good at what she does
but she also has a great passion for it. She always strives to be better and loves the help she gives.
The morals of Wonder Woman are set extremely high making her an outstanding influence for all
people. Her independence and intelligence allows her to take risks and be confident in her actions.
The last quality Wonder Woman possesses is one of the most important which is her ability to see
those for who they really are, because it is incredibly easy for her to not only spot her allies but to
see her enemies as well. "It is these qualities, among others, that prove Wonder Woman is a worthy
opponent as well as a great role model for younger generations." (Callender).
Because Wonder Woman is a female she is bound to face challenges that most heroes do not. Taking
on a role of a hero is usually seen as a man's place because most heroes are males so naturally it is
going to be more challenging for Wonder Woman to

Mad Men Sociological / Semiotic Analysis Essay
Every so often there is a television program that attracts a large audience because it is brilliantly
written and entertaining. One of the most recent television shows to do this has been Mad Men. The
show revolves around an advertising agency in the 1960's and it's key players in the company, more
specifically Don Draper. Being set in the 1960's, it is important to do both a sociological and
semiotic analysis of the show. Society and human interactions have changed dramatically over the
past fifty years and while it is a scripted television show and not a documentary, the drama prides
itself on paying close attention to details and keeping everything true to the time period. It would be
interesting and informative to do an analysis ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Peggy's chosen lifestyle is opposite the other women in the show outside of Sterling Cooper, mainly
Don Draper's wife Betty. Don Draper is a very successful, so his wife gets to spend her days looking
at art, or riding horses. Their socioeconomic stance allows her to spend her entire day doing leisure
activities and not be worried about such trivial things as work. Betty even had a nanny, so as not to
over exert herself with cooking dinner and taking care of their children after all that horseback
riding. Being a housewife to a successful man, Betty lived a very different lifestyle than the young
girls who worked as secretaries. The secretaries in Sterling Cooper created their own small hierarchy
which can be viewed as a bureaucracy. Joan is the "head secretary," giving her a significant value to
both the men and the secretaries. For the most part she decide who gets which secretary, and if
changes should be made. She orders the other secretaries to do things and they listen knowing the
power she holds behind the scenes (whether or not they know its because she's sleeping with one of
the partners is another story). Joan was held in such high regard, even the men of Sterling Cooper
would listen to her; mainly because she demanded respect and they were always hoping to impress
Joan to hopefully catch her attention. This is also why it becomes so hard for Peggy when Joan
begins to resent her for catching the attention of the men in the office

How Does Holden Caulfield Be A?
Obedience. An simple word, so full with different meanings. We can see the looks on everyone 's
faces, we hear the gossip, but will we ever react? No, we are taught to stay out of it. Instructions
drilled into our minds to be obedient. Living a life that is seen as perfect, but forever striding for a
goal that was picked for us? Where is the expression? Where is the newly found happiness? The
society that we live in today has changed us, shaped us into "not my business" or "that's their
problem" kind of people. With everyday life, we are faced with challenges, the defining moment is
how we adapt or react to these changes, that is what defines us. Kids drop out to escape this fate, to
escape being tortured every day by their peers, but the scars will remain; they will never fade, but
will only be covered up by other scars stemming from the abuse. That is how Holden Caulfield is, a
scar–covered young man, just trying to escape. Holden's story begins at Pencey, it is Holden's fourth
school; he has already failed out of three others. At Pencey, he has failed four out of five of his
classes and is expelled for not trying in any of those classes. Instead of holden going straight home,
he decided to go out on the town for a total of three days. " What I was really hanging around for, I

know I was leaving them. I hate that. I don't care if it's a sad goodbye or a bad goodbye, but when

Joran Van Der Sloot Biography
A week after Holloway's disappearance, police arrested the last men seen with Holloway: Joran Van
der Sloot, Deepak Kalpoe, and Satish Kalpoe. In the beginning, the stories of all three men matched.
They stated that they all went to the beach and eventually dropped Holloway back off at the Holiday
Inn. However, this claim was proven to be false after video tapes were reviewed showing that the
Kalpoe car never went to the hotel (Joran van der Sloot Biography, 2016).
The two Kalpoe brothers then changed their story and told authorities that Holloway made them
leave her and Joran van der Sloot at a fishermans hut on the beach nearby. The brothers went on to
say that they never heard from Natalee again (Joran van der Sloot Biography, 2016).

They also arrested his father on the belief that he helped dispose of the body and helped to coach the
testimony of the three men. With no evidence they could be held on, and because of the fact Joran's
father was affluent, authorities had to release the men (Joran van der Sloot Biography, 2016).
Over the course of the investigation, several individuals were arrested and questioned. The stories of
the three main figures, the Kalpoe brothers and Joran van der Sloot, changed continuously,
especially that of Joran. A complete timeline taken from Crime and Investigation.com shows a more
understandable timeline (Natalee Holloway: Missing in Aruba, 2015).

On Monday, July 4, Deepak and Satish Kalpoe were released, but Joran van der Sloot was detained
for an additional sixty days. In order to aid in the search, the Royal Netherlands Air Force deployed
three F–16 aircraft equipped with infrared sensors, without result. Satellite photos were also
compared with photographs taken more recently in an attempt to find unexpected shifts of ground
that might be Holloway's grave(Disappearance of Natalee Holloway, 2015). A small pond near the
Aruba Racquet Club close to the Marriott Hotel beach was partly drained between July 27 and 30
after an individual came forward. The gardener claimed to have seen Joran van der Sloot attempting

The two brothers were released on the following day. The prosecution appealed the Kalpoes' release.
That appeal was denied on December 5 with the court stating that the file against the suspect did not
contain direct indications that Natalee passed away due to a violent crime. Van der Sloot was
released without charge on December 7, due to lack of evidence implicating him. No further appeals
were sought out (Disappearance of Natalee Holloway, 2015). Prosecutor Hans Mos declared the
case closed and no charges would be filed due to lack of evidence. Even though the case was closed
the prosecution continued an interest in the Kalpoe's and Joran van der Sloot. The interest remained
due to an alleged chat room message, where one of the three had stated that Holloway was dead.
This was contested by Deepak Kalpoe's attorney, who stated that the prosecution, had misconstrued
a reference to a teacher who had drowned as one to Holloway. Attorney Ronald Wix also stated,
"Unless (Mos) finds a body in the bathroom of one of these kids, there's no way in hell they can

Text Response: the Catcher in the Rye
Text Response: The Catcher in the Rye
The novel, "The Catcher in he Rye", written by J.D. Salinger was set in the late 1940 – early 1950s
in New York. This novel explores the themes of loneliness, relationships and deception though the
use of literary devices. Many symbols are used to enhance our understanding of the novel; such as
Holden Caulfield 's red hunting hat, the museum of Natural History, the ducks in Central Park
Lagoon and the carousel.
The author gives us an insight into the life of a young teenager facing physical and emotional
exhaustion. He struggles to understand and connect to the society. he uses self deception to view
society as 'phoney ': fake and not genuine.
The author has achieved the purpose of this novel. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This creates a comparison between Holden and the novel. The novel is unpredictable and messy,
completely opposite to Holden 's idealised world/imagination; simple and understandable.
Furthermore, the theme of this novel relies strongly on character development. The three themes of
the novel: the painfulness of growing up, alienation as a form of self defence and the phoniness of
adulthood are all based on the main character, Holden. Throughout the novel, Holden seems to
isolate himself from the world. As he says to Mr Spencer, he feels 'trapped ' on ' the other side of life
', and he constantly attempts to fit in as well as protecting himself from maturity.
As the novel progresses, we began to realise that Holden 's alienation is his way of protecting
himself. Just as he wears his red hunting hat as a sign of individuality, he uses isolation as a proof
that he is better than everyone else around him. He never describes his own emotions directly, and
never attempts to discover the source of his pain, which shows he desperately needs love and
companion. This painfulness of growing up is another theme of "The Catcher in the Rye" that helps
our understanding of the novel. Holden is growing into adulthood, yet, he resists it. He fears change
and complexity and wants everything to be simple and predictable; just like childhood. He rejects
his fears and creates an idea that adulthood is superficial and "phoney". As the

Essay on Joan of Arc: A Heroine Among Men
Joan of Arc, a well–known Catholic saint and French national heroine, is a figure worthy of
historical attention. Born in Domremy, France, sometime around 1412, Joan lived as a peasant with
her family on fifty acres of land. At the end of her short life of nineteen years, Joan revealed in a
trial that her rise to power in the Anglo–French conflict was due to a series of visions she had as a
young girl. These visions, which were religious in nature, helped Joan to turn the Hundred Years
War into a religious conflict. Despite her efforts to turn the tide of the war and helping to win a
pivotal battle in Orleans, Joan was captured and put on trial for heresy. After a trial that lasted for
months, Joan was officially labeled a heretic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He saw his daughter traveling with an army: a camp follower. When he awoke, he told her brothers
that if this ever happened, he would ask them to drown her, and if they refused, he would do it
himself". The opposition that Joan faced early in her life set her up for a lifetime of struggle against
multiple enemies. According to Gordon, Joan was first in opposition with her own father and
brothers, who appeared to believe that death would be a worthy punishment for a sister who could
possibly end up in an army. From her first breath, Joan seemed to have all odds placed against her,
yet she would continue to fight in all aspects of her life. Joan would alter reveal in her trial that as a
young girl she experienced visions and voices beginning around the age of twelve. Author Charles
T. Wood provided some insight into the start of Joan's visions: "she received revelation from Our
Lord by a voice which taught her how to behave. And the first time she was greatly afraid. And she
said that the voice came that time at noon, on a summer's day...and she had heard it three times, she
knew that it was the voice of an angel". The sudden appearance of voices and visions to a young girl
soon to become a woman could perhaps be explained by private issues that may have been going on
internally. However, it would be these visions that would draw Joan into the Hundred Years War as a
soldier for King Charles VII, who would later be crowned King of France. Unlike many

In the data–collection phase, the examiner will complete polygraph charts, the charts and questions

essential role in exams. When a polygraph test is administered perfectly, and appropriately the

Joan of Arc
Joan of Arc, first known as Jeanne d'Arc, was born in the village of Domremy, in the Champagne
district of northeastern France. She was born on January 6, 1412 and died May 30,1431 at the age of
19. Joan is a French national heroin and a saint of the Roman Catholic Church. She rescued France
from defeat during the "Hundred Years War" against England. In honor of her victory she is often
called the Maid of Orleans. This is a story of her life.
Joan was not a well–educated woman. She had never learned to read or write but was skilled in

He tested Joan at first. Charles let one of his nobles pretend to be king and sit in his thrown but Joan

was worthy. That was until she told him exactly what he prayed to God for. He was astonished and
realized now that Joan had unusual powers. Though at the time people thought of such powers as
work of the devil, members of the clergy accepted her beliefs anyway. Joan was given a suit of
white armor, a banner, and the command of troops.
In April of 1429 Joan and her army set out to rescue Orleans from English control. At first the
French commanders hesitated to obey her orders but eventually listened to her. Ten days after she
arrived in Orleans, April 28–May 8, Joan's forces broke the Siege of Orleans and the English ran off.
After her tremendous victory she wanted Charles to receive a proper ceremony to crown him as
king, this is called coronation. Joan led Charles and his military through enemy territory as her
troops defeated English in more than one battle along their journey. They proudly entered Reims
with triumph as Joan stood at the side of Charles. He was crowned King of France on July 17, 1429.

The Catcher in the Rye as a Coming-of-Age Story Essay
The Catcher in the Rye can be read as a coming–of–age story. How does Holden's Character change
or mature during the course of the novel? To what extent are there TWO Holden Caulfields in the
book, and what is the difference between them? The novel 'The Catcher in the Rye' by J.D Salinger
is a coming–of–age story. It follows the short tale of Holden Caulfield, a sixteen year old boy, who
throughout his experiences in the novel, changes and becomes more mature and independent. The
story essentially has two Holden Caulfields, the one telling the story, and the one that the story is
being told about. This essay will look at the differences and similarities between the two Holden's'.

The self–narration of Holden's life is what gives the reader an insight into the way he thinks and
feels. It helps you understand why Holden is the way he is. Without this explanation from him, you
wouldn't empathise with him, or like him very much at all. It's the little stories he tells, like the story
about Allies baseball mitt, "...Allie had this left–handed fielders mitt... he had poems written all over
the fingers and the pocket and everywhere. In green ink." (Salinger, 1945–6, p.33) or about how he
knows Jane Gallagher, "You were never even worried, with Jane, whether your hand was sweaty or
not. All you knew was, you were happy. You really were" (Salinger, 1945–6, p.72) that make you
see the softer side to him. Holden's connection with his little brother Allie was very special to him.
This is evident in the way he talks about Allie. He holds Allie up to these great expectations, saying
"You'd have liked him" (Salinger, 1945–6, p.33) and convincing you how great he was and how
intelligent and special he was. You are now able to connect and sympathise for Holden, because he
has told you all about the things that mean most to him, and you can't help but feel a little sorry for
him. Although there are essentially two Holdens, there are still traits that remain the same.
Throughout the story, Holden feels the need to explain and justify himself, as though people don't
believe him. Holden tells the story

The Strongest Man Upon the Earth Is He Who Stands Most...
According to Henrik Ibsen, "The strongest man upon the earth is he who stands most alone." In
other words, what this quote means is that the strongest man is the most independent; individuals
who do not need to rely on others to survive. Individuals who stand alone are the ones who realize
the strength within themselves and become powerful characters. This quote is valid because
individuals who like to take actions on their own and at their own pace become the most successful.
Two works of literature that support the validity of this statement are The Catcher in the Rye, by J.D.
Salinger and The Color of Water, by James McBride.

The Catcher in the Rye, Guilt
The Catcher in the Rye The Catcher in the Rye is one of J. D. Salinger's world–famous books about

challenges of growing up, Holden separates the "phony" aspects of society, and the "phonies"
themselves. Some of these "phony" people in his life are the headmaster whose friendliness depends
on the wealth of the parents, and his roommate who scores with girls using sickly–sweet affection.

Holden's guiltiness towards mediocre things makes him a more sensitive stressful teenager that
becomes more rebellious by each chapter. Another example of Holden feeling guilty would be the
time he describes how he moved his suitcases to make it look as though his roommate had the more
expensive ones. Holden seems to feel guilty for having expensive suitcases and sorry for his
roommate, who has cheaper bags. A second example of Holden's personality changing because of
feeling guilty all the time would be the time Holden is eating breakfast. While he eats bacon and
eggs, two nearby nuns only have coffee and toast. Holden feels really bad about this, saying, "That
depressed me. I hate it if I'm eating bacon and eggs or something and somebody else is only eating
toast and coffee." This again, shows how Holden apologizes for his money and is guilty about
having more than others. One main thing Holden is interested in and he makes this clear would be
sex. He harassed Luce constantly about questions to do with sex, and was aroused by the sexual
behavior displayed at Edmont Hotel. Another example of how Holden gets guilty easily and feels
nervous would be when he was alone with a prostitute and got flustered with her sitting on his lap.

I can imagine, Katniss felt very surprised, a last request was to sing, and this was probably a
shocking request, especially in the circumstances and the overall atmosphere of the arena. Despite
Katniss's excuses she decided to sing on Rue's last gasps of breathe. Katniss was so loyal to Rue,
even though Katniss didn't know Rue's background. She could have been from one of the wealthiest
families in district 12. But Katniss still treated her with the highest of respect. This may be because
Rue is just like Prim in the eyes of Katniss. In the introduction the theme of fatherhood was
mentioned, this is a major theme throughout both of the stories, for Katniss the relationship she had
with her father was so important that her whole world fell down when he was killed. Hamlets story
is so similar to Katniss's. Shakespeare presents Hamlet's thoughts and feelings through him being
overwhelmed as his father's ghost leaves. Throughout the speech Hamlet is thinking over what his
father has just told him. Shakespeare has him repeating the lines the ghost said as he left,
'Remember Thee.' This shows he is shocked that that he's said and wants this phrase to be prominent
throughout the time. Hamlet wants to make sure that what he has heard is acted upon and that he
stays true to his father's word. I think Shakespeare wanted to show that Hamlet

The War Of The American War
The year is 1428, France and Britain are in the middle of a heated battle formerly known as the
Hundred Years' War. Life is a constant battle to survive, regardless of whether one is a civilian or a
soldier. Although they possess a larger population than Britain, the French are losing tremendously
against the British forces and all hope is beginning to look bleak. When all faith was almost lost, a
remarkable woman stepped up to change the tides of the escalated situation. Born as a farming
peasant, no one would expect Joan of Arc to rise up to become the war general necessary to save
France from their turmoil. Joan was a significant and yet highly intriguing person for her time
period because she defied all societal expectations for a woman in the fourteenth century, captivated
the respect of numerous kings and generals around her, and was one of the only few people to have
her court trial re–examined years after her death. Before divulging further into the examination of
what catalyzed Joan of Arc into becoming one of the most influential woman in history, it is
important to examine her backstory, to understand why she made an enormous impression on the
people around her. Joan was born in the year 1412 to "a common family of the peasant village of
Domrémy in the French providence of Lorraine" (Richey 1). Joan was known for being "an
unusually devout farm child" (Richey 1) with "no formal education beyond" (Richey 25) learning

Holden's Depression in J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the...
Everybody feels depressed at some time or another in their lives. However, it becomes a problem
when depression is so much a part of a person's life that he or she can no longer experience
happiness. This happens to the young boy, Holden Caulfield in J.D Salinger's novel, The Catcher in
the Rye. Mr. Antolini accurately views the cause of Holden's depression as his lack of personal
motivation, his inability to self–reflect and his stubbornness to overlook the obvious which
collectively results in him giving up on life before he ever really has a chance to get it started.
Holden lacks the essential ability to motivate himself, which he needs to survive in the 'real' world.

he had spent his entire life hating. But like Mr. Antolini tells him,?You?re a student ? whether the
idea appeals to you or not. You?re in love with knowledge. And I think you?ll find, once you get
past all that, you?re going to start getting closer and closer ? that is, if you want to and if you look
for it and wait for it ? to the kind of information that will be very, very dear to your heart? (189).
Nevertheless Holden has so much personal pride he refuses lower him to that level. For if he does,
in his eyes, he will be the same as all those other ?Phony Ivy League bastards? (85). As a result of
Holden giving up on school, he is unable to proceed with the natural evolution that must occur for
him to move on in society. Mr. Antolini later points out to him ?Learning is a beautiful reciprocal
arrangement. And it isn?t education. It?s history. It?s poetry? (189). His goal for Holden being to see
school as something he loves and not something he is being forced to do. Mr. Antolini tried to give
Holden a reason to be motivated and in which case not to give up so easily. Holden is quite skilled at
citing exactly what is wrong with other people. However he never acknowledges his own faults. He
was sure the entire world was out of step with him. As Alan Stewart explains, ?Holden seemed to
divide the world into two groups. He was in one group, along with a few other people such as his

Power Dynamic Between Joan And Roger's Episode 'Babylon'
In the episode "Babylon" from the television show Mad Men, the power dynamic between Joan and
Roger is unusual in that while Roger, a stereotypical white entitled male in the sixties, owns the ad
agency and objectifies Joan, his desire for her, and her ability to manipulate his desire, allows her to
take the power in the relationship and remain independent.
America has had a historically dominant patriarchal system with a particular type of man in charge:
the white, heterosexual, male, who until the 60s–70s had yet to be challenged in his birthright claim
to authority and status. These men believed they were superior to anyone who didn't have the same
characteristics as they did. Because of these societal norms, men believed that they were above their

Joan uses sex to maintain control over Roger, and does everything for what could be seen as selfish
reasons, but as a woman she has the right to do so. With this in mind, the episode "Babylon" shows
how a woman can use, societal norms to manipulate a man into giving her what every woman in the
60s wants but could never have, power and freedom. Roger's dialogue often has him comparing
Joan to objects, outlining his fantasies in which he has complete control of her. However, she is
presented as much more in control of how she is objectified. The affair is first introduced with a

The Themes Of Professor Marston And The Wonder Woman
Professor Marston and the Wonder Women tells a bold and provocative story about psychologist and
college professor William Moulton Marston (Luke Evans), and the behind–the–scenes realities
which led to his conceiving of, and authoring an initial run of comic books, introducing his creation
of Wonder Woman to readers of all ages in the 1940s.
Prior to that, years before, Marston claimed to be the inventor, along with wife Elizabeth (Rebecca
Hall), of the first–ever legitimate polygraph, or lie detector machine. The Marstons found that when
a participant in the test told a lie, their systolic blood pressure would change, measured by a bar
which wrapped around the chest of the individual receiving the test. Wonder Woman fans may recall
that the superhero brandishes a lasso, which when wrapped around the chest of a foe, compels them
to tell the truth.
However, other reasons were in play when we see children's author and psychologist Josette Frank
(Connie Britton) grilling Marston over the themes and concepts found in his comic book series in
the mid–1940s. In flashback, we learn how Marston worked as a college professor and researcher,
alongside his wife, selling his DiSC theory, positing that people express human emotions in four
types of ways, through Dominance, Inducement, Submission, and Compliance.
Written and directed by Angela Robinson, Professor Marston gets the unconventional structure of
the story out of the way early on when Marston becomes instantly attracted to

Character Analysis Of Wonder Woman
In today's society, there are many different figures to look up to especially those who seem to hold
special powers like superheroes.
Since She was created off of honesty and feminism, she carries a whip that stands
for the truth and uses it against her enemies leaving her to be the preeminent hero.
Wonder Woman has many hero like qualities that make her such a marvelous leader. The very first
quality she possesses is her ambition. Her ambitious actions influence her ways of looking and
acting like a hero. The second major quality Wonder Woman holds is her nobility, because she is
selfless and strives to save the lives of anyone and everyone. Not only is she good at what she does,
but she also has a great passion for it. She always strives to be exceptional and treasures the help she
gives. The morals of Wonder Woman are set extremely high

I took Wonder Woman for granted," she said (Dueben, Alex. "Jill Lepore Reveals "The Secret

The book starts by introducing its thesis and supporting points, as well as the themes of feminism
and birth control with evidence to support it, Wonder Woman's secret history, "feminism made
Wonder Woman" (Lepore xiii) and she remade it, therefore, her "debt is to the fictional feminist
utopia and to the struggle for women's rights" (Lepore xiii). Additionally, "her origins lies in
William Moulton Marston's past, and in the lives of the women he loved; they created Wonder
Woman, too. Wonder Woman is no ordinary comic–book superhero because Marston was no
ordinary man, and his family was no ordinary family. Marston was a polymath. He was an expert in
deception: he invented the lie detector test. He led a secret life: had 4 children by two women; they
lived together under one roof. They were masters of the art of concealment. Their favorite hiding
place was the comics they produced" (Lepore xiii). And not to mention, "Wonder Woman has been
fighting for women's rights for a very long time,"(Lepore xiv) in which supported the women's
suffrage, feminist and birth control movements.
The author's use of rhetoric and rhetorical devices is viewed as her credibility and evidence that
supports the themes, feminism and birth control. "In 1910, 4 percent of Americans

Communication Is A Form Of Symmetrical Communication
Communication can come in various forms. A person can write, speak, or even use American Sign
Language to communicate. Within communication itself, there are various styles used and ways to
receive feedback. To name a couple, two–way asymmetrical and two–way symmetrical
communication are two well know forms in regards to Public Relations. Asymmetrical
Communication happens when professionals seek to pursue their publics into changing their
opinions about certain things. However, this attempt is usually unequal, given that professionals use
research to help them persuade their publics. Symmetrical Communication on the other hand has a
form of balance to it and can lead publics to change their attitudes on their own.
I think that blogging is a form of symmetrical communication. Although it may seem unusual, this is
an actual form of communication. A person (both professional and non–professional) is able to
publish their opinion about something and publics are able to read and/or respond by commenting.
Usually blog posts get overlooked. There are probably a million posts that have been published, but

A Symbol of Girl Power
"Sword, armor, banner– now the Maid was ready for her first military move" (Yeatts, 29). Joan of
Arc, also known as the Maid of Orléans, led an army at the age of eighteen and successfully
changed the tide of the 100 Years' War with her cleverness and bravery. Cunning and kind at the
same time, Joan of Arc used her belief in herself and in God to make everyone around her more
hopeful for a better outcome to the war. Born January 6, 1412 in Domrémy France, Joan of Arc
began to "hear voices" at the age of thirteen. Claiming to be guided by the Archangel Michael, St.
Catherine, and St. Margaret, the Maid set out to Vaucouleurs to at age sixteen to say that she was
destined to save France and to request an escort to go see the heir, or dauphin, Charles VII. Although
turned down twice before Robert de Beaudricourt, the commander of a fortress near Vaucouleurs,
gave in to her appeals, Joan of Arc was insistent. After two years of nonstop effort, she was finally
granted permission to journey to speak with the dauphin. Joan of Arc gave girls in the world today a
reason to be proud.
The Maid of Orléans, or La Pucelle d'Orléans in French, is a symbol of courage and perseverance;
she was strong, fierce, and beautiful in every way, the beacon of hope for the Armagnacs. She was
always to be found in the thick of the fight, using her lance with expert skill. Everyone who fought

Not Only Natalee Is Missing By Anne-Marie O Connor
When Natalee Holloway went missing her face was plastered on every television screen to promote
her being found. Some people wonder why white females make national news more often than any
other female or male for that matter. In the argumentative essay "Not Only Natalee is Missing"
Anne–Marie O'Connor tries to explain how and why people make national news. O'Connor's essay
starts out based on the idea that white females are the only ones that make national news, but her use
of pathos, ethos, and logos, prove this idea to be based upon economic status and race rather than
gender alone.
The author uses pathos to appeal to the audience's sense of open–mindedness about women who
make national news. O'Connor tries to get the reader to realize how being human can cause people
to overlook certain stories and make them seem unimportant. In her essay she states, "We don't pay
as much attention to someone missing from a community we don't know or are not familiar with"
(661). This quotation symbolizes how sometimes people can be overlooked in today's news. The
issue about who makes national news can appeal to more than just a sense of open–mindedness, it
can also appeal to your sense of sympathy. When news reporters get their stories, no one is for sure
how long the story can stay lingering amongst people. Earl Hutchinson, a political analyst, states,
"When you raise the issue people say, "This is a tragedy and we should do more," Hutchinson said.
"But it only lasts a hot minute.

Analysis Of The Book ' The Catcher Of The Rye '
Reaching adulthood for many individuals leaves them instilled with curiosity and unaware of what
to come. Characters like Iggy Slocomb and Holden Caulfield are lead through a journey of self–
driven motifs to better understanding there true place in life and adjusting accordingly. Nonetheless
there view on society has left them believing hypocrisy is a trait carried through many, and thus
falsely believing they are exempt from it. Hypocrisy is viewed as the process of stating moral
standards or beliefs in which one self does not follow. Although both characters are seen with this
theme, it's not the only one present. In the book The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger and the
movie Igby Goes Down by Burr Steers hypocrisy, self–Isolation and the deception of adult–hood are
themes that re–illiterate the coming of age for young–adults like Holden Caulfield and Igby

Insanity is when you're in a state of mind that prevents normal perception, behavior or social

ways that could frighten people, or make people feel uncomfortable when around you. It's when you
do things out of the ordinary; yet feel as if they are ordinary. Insanity could come about when you're

Antolini was trying to hinder him from going down the wrong path. Holden focuses on the little
details like the gasoline rainbows in the puddles on the street and which suitcase is nicer. He
overlooks the obvious, "big picture" which could better help him adjust and focuses instead on little,
often–insignificant things he can handle. Moreover, Holden only pays attention to the things he's
interested in and doesn't pay attention to the teachers or work given at school. This lack of interest
has caused him to drop out of four schools and, therefore missing out on knowledge necessary for
his well–being and self–discipline. Holden does not like change. Holden needs change, he needs to
grow up. He needs to change his thoughts and behavior. Holden says "Certain things should stay the
way they are, you ought to be able to stick them in one of those big glass cases and just leave them
alone (122)." Finally, Holden's overly judgmental and critical. When he sees someone he
automatically judges the person because they aren't in his perfect fantasy. In the bar he points out the
"flits" (gay people) and, he thinks that his old roommate Dick Slagle has a inferiority complex just
because he didn't put his suitcases on out to show when Holden did. Holden thinks of Mr. Haas (his
"phony" headmaster) as someone "[shakes] hands with them and [gives] them a phony smile (14)."

Analysis Of Jeanne D ' Arc
A teen peasant guided by God, France under attack, and only a silver ring to track back into history.
In Medieval times, there were many aspiring stories of defying the meaning of a damsel. The
defined term of a damsel was a young, unmarried woman, although, embedded in our minds are
women who needs help. Joan of Arc didn 't expect to be a helpless woman trapped in a tower,
doomed until her knight in shining armor saved her. She saved the French army from losing to
Britain in the Hundred Years' War.
In 1412, Jeanne d'Arc was born on a small farm in France. During this time period, there was a
bloody war going on, which is also known as the Hundred Years' War. A conflict between England
and France over the right to own land, disputes of the next French throne, and economic conflicts.
Less than fifty years before was the Black plague which killed more than half of the country's
population. Joan's father was a farmer who practiced disciplinary while her mother was a home–
worker and emphasized church ethics. Growing up, she was trained to tend animals and spin wool.
Joan wasn 't taught to read or write, but she attended many village festivals and was obedient to her
parents. Women during this times was considered the 'original sin' since Eve was considered
responsible for tempting Adam to eating the apple. Therefore, women were supposed to remain
silent and be under the control of men. In her years of adolescence, the English was gaining the

of drinking Holden says, I puked before I went to bed, but I didnt really have to–I forced myself.
(90) This shows that Holden is hurting his body in defiantly more ways than one. Holden is also
aware that he is somewhat depressed due to his lousy feelings and inability to eat much of anything.
Holden is on a walk when he says, Id feel better if I had something to eat. So I went in this very
cheap–looking restaurant and had doughnuts and coffee. Only, I didnt eat the doughnuts. I couldnt

simple tasks such as eating. Even though he is aware of his depression, Holden does not speak of
seeing a psychiatrist for serious issues such as his malnutrition even though he should really see one.
An obvious sign of Holdens depression is the fact that he talks of committing suicide at various
points of the novel. Every time Holden is feeling really lousy he would

comes to women is with Jane Gallagher. Constantly mentioning Jane, Holden recalls playing
checkers with her before he got sent to boarding school. When his roommate, Stradlater, has a date
with Jane, Holden asks him a peculiar question, "Did you ask her if she still keeps all her kings in
the back row?" (p. 42) Holden, jealous of Stradlater's date with Jane, longs to see Jane but never has
the courage to call her. Interactions with other people especially women perplex and overwhelm
Holden. He therefore resorts to isolation, illustrating a characteristic of his mental state. In the
course of the story, Holden is suspended between adulthood and childhood. Several of his actions
and words show evidence of his confusion between adults and children. Admitting to his immaturity,
Holden says, "I was sixteen then, and I'm seventeen now, and sometimes I act like I'm about
thirteen." (p. 9) Sunny, the prostitute is an example of Holden's attempt to be an adult, but realizing
he is stuck in childhood. Another example is when he asks his cab driver where the ducks in Central
Park go during the Winter when the ice is

Summary: The Disappearance Of Natalee Holloway
The disappearance of Natalee Holloway, an 18–year–old graduate of Mountain Brook High School
in Birmingham, Alabama left many unanswered questions. On May 26, 2005, Holloway and 124
fellow graduates traveled to Aruba for a five–day, unofficial graduation trip. The graduates were
accompanied by seven chaperones. Bob Plummer, who was a chaperone on the trip stated the
chaperones met with the students each day to ensure nothing was wrong. Jodi Bearman, who
organized the trip, stated, "The chaperones were not supposed to keep up with their every move."
Police Commissioner Gerold Dompig, who lead the investigation from mid–2005 until 2006,
described the behavior of the students, as excessive drinking, a lot of partying, and room exchanges
were done every night. The Holiday Inn told them they weren't welcome next year. Statements were
made that Holloway drank all day, every day. She started every morning with cocktails and drank to

The story caused tremendous media attention. Searches for Holloway began immediately afterward.
Hundreds of volunteers from Aruba and the United States joined the search. Fifty Dutch marines
conducted an extensive search of the shoreline. Aruban banks raised $20,000 and provided other
support to aid volunteer search teams. Reports indicate Holloway did not appear on any security
camera footage from her hotel's lobby during the course of the night; however, Beth Twitty made
varying statements as to whether the cameras were actually working that night. According to Police
Commissioner Jan van der Straten, the initial head of the investigation until his 2005 retirement,
Holloway did not have to go through the lobby to return to her room. The search for physical
evidence was extensive and, on occasion, subject to false leads. A possible blood sample was taken
from Deepak Kalpoe's car for analysis but determined not to be blood (Disappearance of Natalee

Holden Caulfield 's ' The Catcher 's The Rye '
Are 50's teens able to survive the hurtful but unavoidable transition of becoming a grown up as they
struggle with the changes that come along with it?
JD. Salinger's 1951 book, The Catcher in the Rye, shows us how society treated their confused and
changing teenagers during their transition into adulthood. The book's main character Holden
Caulfield is being pressured into growing up even though he doesn't feel ready, to lead an adult life.
He is still struggling socially and mourning for his deceased brother whose death turned Holden
upside down and into a negative, hopeless person from a young age, which causes him to be
distracted, indifferent and to flunk every school he goes to.
Therefore, Holden Caulfield seems to be dealing with a world that is forcing him to change his ways
and grow up because of his age while he struggles with his past, present and future, in this JD
Salinger classic.
Thesis Statement Brainstorm:
1– Salinger's main character Holden, is seen to be struggling with his past, present and future in The
Catcher in the Rye.
2– Holden is seen to be having unspecified negative thoughts about growing up throughout JD
Salinger's famous The Catcher in the Rye.
3–JD Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye's main character Holden Caulfield seems to be dealing with
a world that forces him to change his ways because of his age and what it's expected from him while
he is struggling with his past, present and future.

Women 's Fight For Combat Roles
Joan of Arc: A women in Combat
A great leader knows how and what to do in any given situation. Great leaders know how to adapt,
and find a way to conquer a specific task or obstacle. There has been an ongoing debate about
whether women should have access to combat roles. Many argue that women are not physically
build to match the strength of a man. A young lady by the name of "Joan of Arc" or commonly
known as "The Maid of Orleans" was a young leader of the 15th century who changed the course of
the hundred years war. Joan became an unlikely heroine leader who led a revolt against the British
which ultimately ended in a victory. Joan embodies the definition of what a women in the military
should be. She debunks the 21st century modern critics that say women do not fit the standards to
survive and thrive in combat roles. The objective of this paper is to identify key arguments that are
in favor of women fighting in combat. Gender equality among women has been a longstanding
battle. Many are for gender neutral roles in the military, and many are against it. The people that are
against it believe that "women will endanger their units". While the "Army and the Navy believes
that it will enlarge the talent pool, and that opening combat roles to women will enhance the
readiness of the military.
" In our view, the best qualified solider, regardless of gender, should be allowed to serve in any
position," according to a joint statement to the committee by acting Army Secretary

Analysis Of ' One Flew Over The Cuckoo 's Nest '

Alienation in the Lives of Chief Bromden and Holden Caulfield
As one is experiencing a life of alienation and loneliness, they may being to act uncontrollable while
rebelling against their surroundings, one loses themselves as they feel different than everyone
present. Alienation can force an individual to spiral into an abyss of nothingness, nonetheless if one
allows others to reach out and inspire than it is possible to break away from the alienation and
loneliness. Chief Bromden from the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, written by Ken Kesey,
is an Indian who was institutionalized for insanity and is considered a chronic in the ward as he is
"too far gone" to be healed. Holden Caulfield from The Catcher in the Rye, written by J.D Salinger
is a lying, rebellious teenager sent away by his parents to a private school as they are unable to
handle Holden's behaviour. It is evident both experience alienation as their stories progress and
actions taken, however the individuals present in their lives motivate changes in the outcomes of
these dynamic characters.
Firstly, the prominent motif in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is invisibility, Chief Bromden was
seen as invisible in his childhood as well as on the ward. Once as a child on the reserve with his
family, a group of appraisers trespassed onto the Bromden family land while Bromden was outside
completing daily chores, the group proceeded to insult

Essay On Meaningful Symbols In The Rye By J.D Salinger

  • 1. Essay on Meaningful Symbols in the Rye by J.D Salinger Catcher in the Rye", by J.D Salinger, is about a boy named Holden Caulfield. He thinks the adult world is a bunch of "phonies." The novel contains many key symbols that help develop the novel, and to help show Holden Caulfield's point of view on the way he sees the world. Three of these key symbols include: Holden Caulfield's red hunting hat, the ducks in the Central Park lagoon, and The Museum of Natural History. One of the most important and recognizable symbols in the novel is Holden Caulfield's red hunting hat. It symbolizes his uniqueness. The way he wears the hat gives off an impression that he wants to be very different from everyone around him. He "swung the old peak way around to the back." This may ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The ducks left the pond. This symbolizes exactly where Holden is in his life right now. He left his childhood, and is now a part of the adult world. He desperately wishes that he was like the fish in the pond. He wish he can "just stay there," and be an innocent child forever. Finally, another key symbol in the novel is The Museum of Natural History. It symbolizes a perfect and pristine world that Holden desires to live in. Holden enjoys museums because they are unchanging. In a museum, everything is so peaceful and simple, an ideal place to live for Holden Caulfield. One of his biggest fears and challenges is change. For example, this is the reason why he is so scared and terrified to call Jane Gallagher, a girl who he finds very attractive and is one of the few people that Holden actually admires. He is afraid that if he calls her, she would be a changed person, and that is the last thing he wants...change. This symbol shows the main purpose of the novel, too. Holden is so afraid of surrendering to the life of an adult that he has such a difficult time figuring out reality. However, sometimes he shows his change into maturity by getting drunk and lusting for sex.The Museum of Natural History represents innocence and purity in the novel. Like the museum, Holden does not want to change. He wants to be just like the displays in the museum: pristine and permanent. He believes that everything "should just stay the way they are." • 3. Chris Mccandless Persuasive Speech Raft rough draft The message I will be conveying is the importance of embracing failure. My role will be myself as I understand myself the best. The audience addressed will be my fellow classmates. In the format of a speech. In Into The Wild American authors define success as the completion of a goal, and failure as a result of arrogance and disillusionment as the harsh reality caused by failure. Chris McCandless succeeds in achieving his goals when surviving in the wild. He shot lots of game porcupines, squirrels and even took down a moose. McCandless had lived off of the food that the wild was providing him with and he had experienced most of what he wanted to experience. " Positivism, the unsurpassable joy of life aesthetic. ... That sort of stuff isn't relevant to him therefore embracing his own opinion and his "failure". My second quote takes place towards the middle of the book. Holden has left his school to go out into the real world he gets himself a hotel room in the boonies of the city. He still doesn't know what time it is. He gets dressed and goes down to the lobby and finds where the club is. " I ordered a scotch and soda, and told the guy not to mix it– i said it fast as hell, because if you hem and haw they think you're under the age of 21 and won't sell you any intoxicating liquor. I had trouble with him anyway, though. " I'm sorry sir," he said " but do you have some verification of your age? Your driver 's license perhaps? I gave him this very cold stare, like he had just insulted the hell out of me, and asked him, "Do i look like i 'm under 21? "I'm sorry sir but we have our"– "okay okay" i say. I figured the hell with it. "Bring me a coke." He started to walk away and I called him back. "Can 'tcha stick a little rum in it or something?" I asked him very nicely and all. " Im very sorry sir..... He beat it on me. I didn 't hold it against him though. They could have lost their jobs selling to minors. • 5. Taking a Look at Joan of Arc For centuries women have been discriminated against and perceived as either housewives or maids. There have been so many stereotypes suggesting that some women actually believe they are inferior to men. The actuality of this is women are capable of most things men can do and even more. One of the absolute greatest examples of this theory was Joan of Arc. She started a movement that most men could never dream of creating. Without her France might have submitted to English rule centuries ago. Joan of Arc was a courageous, divine woman who altered French history and even influenced many of today's events. FIrst, before comprehending Joan's significance one must understand the environment in which she grew up. Almost eighty years before Joan was born, Edward III of England refused to give respects to Phillip VI of France. As a result of this intolerable act Phillip VI withdrew the lands of Aquitaine, which were given as a gift, from the English. When news of this "thievery" reached Edward III he angrily claimed himself king of the French. Conflicts between the Kingdom of England and the French Empire escalated. By 1337 war was declared and the Hundred Years' War began. The Hundred Years' War is divided into three different phases resulting from treaties and conflicts. These three phases are The Edwardian Era War, The Caroline War, and The Lancastrian War. Joan spent most of her life during The Lancastrian War (English decline in France). In 1415, King Henry V of England defeated ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Character Analysis Of Wonder Woman In today's society there are many different figures to look up to especially those who seem to posses special powers like super heroes. Most superheroes are similar but there's one that is very different from the rest and her name is Wonder Woman. She fights evil while still being a Woman making her the ultimate hero for any young girl to look up to. Although he didn't picture a woman in his role of a less masculine superman, the idea of Wonder Woman was first originally created in 1941 by William Moulton Marston. She was used to be seen as a World War II hero and warrior by having the strength and power of a man but the grace and beauty of a lady. Wonder Woman "fears nothing. She stands for justice, equality, and America." (Arnold–Forster). Since She was built off of honesty and feminism she carries a whip that stands for the truth and uses it against her enemies leaving her to be the ultimate hero. Wonder Woman has many hero like qualities that make her such an amazing leader. The very first quality she possesses is her ambition. Her ambitious actions influence her ways of looking and acting like a hero. The second major quality Wonder Woman holds is her nobility, because she is selfless and strives to save the lives of anyone and everyone. Not only is she good at what she does but she also has a great passion for it. She always strives to be better and loves the help she gives. The morals of Wonder Woman are set extremely high making her an outstanding influence for all people. Her independence and intelligence allows her to take risks and be confident in her actions. The last quality Wonder Woman possesses is one of the most important which is her ability to see those for who they really are, because it is incredibly easy for her to not only spot her allies but to see her enemies as well. "It is these qualities, among others, that prove Wonder Woman is a worthy opponent as well as a great role model for younger generations." (Callender). Because Wonder Woman is a female she is bound to face challenges that most heroes do not. Taking on a role of a hero is usually seen as a man's place because most heroes are males so naturally it is going to be more challenging for Wonder Woman to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One of the most recent television shows to do this has been Mad Men. The show revolves around an advertising agency in the 1960's and it's key players in the company, more specifically Don Draper. Being set in the 1960's, it is important to do both a sociological and semiotic analysis of the show. Society and human interactions have changed dramatically over the past fifty years and while it is a scripted television show and not a documentary, the drama prides itself on paying close attention to details and keeping everything true to the time period. Peggy's chosen lifestyle is opposite the other women in the show outside of Sterling Cooper, mainly Don Draper's wife Betty. Don Draper is a very successful, so his wife gets to spend her days looking at art, or riding horses. Their socioeconomic stance allows her to spend her entire day doing leisure activities and not be worried about such trivial things as work. Betty even had a nanny, so as not to over exert herself with cooking dinner and taking care of their children after all that horseback riding. Being a housewife to a successful man, Betty lived a very different lifestyle than the young girls who worked as secretaries. The secretaries in Sterling Cooper created their own small hierarchy which can be viewed as a bureaucracy. Joan is the "head secretary," giving her a significant value to both the men and the secretaries. For the most part she decide who gets which secretary, and if changes should be made. She orders the other secretaries to do things and they listen knowing the power she holds behind the scenes (whether or not they know its because she's sleeping with one of the partners is another story). Joan was held in such high regard, even the men of Sterling Cooper would listen to her; mainly because she demanded respect and they were always hoping to impress Joan to hopefully catch her attention. No, we are taught to stay out of it. Instructions drilled into our minds to be obedient. Living a life that is seen as perfect, but forever striding for a goal that was picked for us? Where is the expression? Where is the newly found happiness? The society that we live in today has changed us, shaped us into "not my business" or "that's their problem" kind of people. This novel explores the themes of loneliness, relationships and deception though the use of literary devices. Many symbols are used to enhance our understanding of the novel; such as Holden Caulfield 's red hunting hat, the museum of Natural History, the ducks in Central Park Lagoon and the carousel. The author gives us an insight into the life of a young teenager facing physical and emotional exhaustion. He struggles to understand and connect to the society. he uses self deception to view society as 'phoney ': fake and not genuine. The author has achieved the purpose of this novel. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This creates a comparison between Holden and the novel. The novel is unpredictable and messy, completely opposite to Holden 's idealised world/imagination; simple and understandable. Furthermore, the theme of this novel relies strongly on character development. The three themes of the novel: the painfulness of growing up, alienation as a form of self defence and the phoniness of adulthood are all based on the main character, Holden. Throughout the novel, Holden seems to isolate himself from the world. As he says to Mr Spencer, he feels 'trapped ' on ' the other side of life ', and he constantly attempts to fit in as well as protecting himself from maturity. As the novel progresses, we began to realise that Holden 's alienation is his way of protecting himself. Just as he wears his red hunting hat as a sign of individuality, he uses isolation as a proof that he is better than everyone else around him. He never describes his own emotions directly, and never attempts to discover the source of his pain, which shows he desperately needs love and companion. This painfulness of growing up is another theme of "The Catcher in the Rye" that helps our understanding of the novel. Holden is growing into adulthood, yet, he resists it. He fears change and complexity and wants everything to be simple and predictable; just like childhood. He rejects his fears and creates an idea that adulthood is superficial and "phoney". As the ... Born in Domremy, France, sometime around 1412, Joan lived as a peasant with her family on fifty acres of land. At the end of her short life of nineteen years, Joan revealed in a trial that her rise to power in the Anglo–French conflict was due to a series of visions she had as a young girl. These visions, which were religious in nature, helped Joan to turn the Hundred Years War into a religious conflict. Despite her efforts to turn the tide of the war and helping to win a pivotal battle in Orleans, Joan was captured and put on trial for heresy. According to Gordon, Joan was first in opposition with her own father and brothers, who appeared to believe that death would be a worthy punishment for a sister who could possibly end up in an army. From her first breath, Joan seemed to have all odds placed against her, yet she would continue to fight in all aspects of her life. Joan would alter reveal in her trial that as a young girl she experienced visions and voices beginning around the age of twelve. Author Charles T. Wood provided some insight into the start of Joan's visions: "she received revelation from Our Lord by a voice which taught her how to behave. And the first time she was greatly afraid. And she said that the voice came that time at noon, on a summer's day...and she had heard it three times, she knew that it was the voice of an angel". The sudden appearance of voices and visions to a young girl soon to become a woman could perhaps be explained by private issues that may have been going on internally. However, it would be these visions that would draw Joan into the Hundred Years War as a soldier for King Charles VII, who would later be crowned King of France. Unlike many ... Life is a constant battle to survive, regardless of whether one is a civilian or a soldier. Although they possess a larger population than Britain, the French are losing tremendously against the British forces and all hope is beginning to look bleak. When all faith was almost lost, a remarkable woman stepped up to change the tides of the escalated situation. Born as a farming peasant, no one would expect Joan of Arc to rise up to become the war general necessary to save France from their turmoil. The Marstons found that when a participant in the test told a lie, their systolic blood pressure would change, measured by a bar which wrapped around the chest of the individual receiving the test. Wonder Woman fans may recall that the superhero brandishes a lasso, which when wrapped around the chest of a foe, compels them to tell the truth. However, other reasons were in play when we see children's author and psychologist Josette Frank (Connie Britton) grilling Marston over the themes and concepts found in his comic book series in the mid–1940s. In flashback, we learn how Marston worked as a college professor and researcher, alongside his wife, selling his DiSC theory, positing that people express human emotions in four types of ways, through Dominance, Inducement, Submission, and Compliance. Written and directed by Angela Robinson, Professor Marston gets the unconventional structure of the story out of the way early on when Marston becomes instantly attracted to ... The Secret History of Wonder Woman was written by American historian Jill Lepore. The book was published in 2014 by the Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group. The type of book is a biography that focuses on the life of William Moulton Marston and his companions, as well as feminism and birth control. The book briefly summarizes women's struggles as they act against mankind for what they stand for, with the contribution of developing the super heroine, Wonder Woman. The book starts by introducing its thesis and supporting points, as well as the themes of feminism and birth control with evidence to support it, Wonder Woman's secret history, "feminism made Wonder Woman" (Lepore xiii) and she remade it, therefore, her "debt is to the fictional feminist utopia and to the struggle for women's rights" (Lepore xiii). Additionally, "her origins lies in William Moulton Marston's past, and in the lives of the women he loved; they created Wonder Woman, too. Wonder Woman is no ordinary comic–book superhero because Marston was no ordinary man, and his family was no ordinary family. Marston was a polymath. He was an expert in deception: he invented the lie detector test. He led a secret life: had 4 children by two women; they lived together under one roof. They were masters of the art of concealment. Their favorite hiding place was the comics they produced" (Lepore xiii). And not to mention, "Wonder Woman has been fighting for women's rights for a very long time,"(Lepore xiv) in which supported the women's suffrage, feminist and birth control movements. Within communication itself, there are various styles used and ways to receive feedback. To name a couple, two–way asymmetrical and two–way symmetrical communication are two well know forms in regards to Public Relations. Asymmetrical Communication happens when professionals seek to pursue their publics into changing their opinions about certain things. However, this attempt is usually unequal, given that professionals use research to help them persuade their publics. Symmetrical Communication on the other hand has a form of balance to it and can lead publics to change their attitudes on their own. I think that blogging is a form of symmetrical communication. Although it may seem unusual, this is an actual form of communication. A person (both professional and non–professional) is able to publish their opinion about something and publics are able to read and/or respond by commenting. Usually blog posts get overlooked. There are probably a million posts that have been published, but no one has read. However, well known bloggers or blog sites, like Perez Hilton, TMZ, Mashable, and my personal favorite, The Shade room are all somewhat reliable sources. Many of these are digital media. Although turned down twice before Robert de Beaudricourt, the commander of a fortress near Vaucouleurs, gave in to her appeals, Joan of Arc was insistent. After two years of nonstop effort, she was finally granted permission to journey to speak with the dauphin. Joan of Arc gave girls in the world today a reason to be proud. Some people wonder why white females make national news more often than any other female or male for that matter. In the argumentative essay "Not Only Natalee is Missing" Anne–Marie O'Connor tries to explain how and why people make national news. O'Connor's essay starts out based on the idea that white females are the only ones that make national news, but her use of pathos, ethos, and logos, prove this idea to be based upon economic status and race rather than gender alone. The author uses pathos to appeal to the audience's sense of open–mindedness about women who make national news. O'Connor tries to get the reader to realize how being human can cause people to overlook certain stories and make them seem unimportant. In her essay she states, "We don't pay as much attention to someone missing from a community we don't know or are not familiar with" (661). This quotation symbolizes how sometimes people can be overlooked in today's news. The issue about who makes national news can appeal to more than just a sense of open–mindedness, it can also appeal to your sense of sympathy. When news reporters get their stories, no one is for sure how long the story can stay lingering amongst people. Earl Hutchinson, a political analyst, states, "When you raise the issue people say, "This is a tragedy and we should do more," Hutchinson said. "But it only lasts a hot minute. ...
