best interest to execute Billy so that their ship does not rise in mutiny. Because Vere
is the Captain, his speech and rhetoric are so persuasive that both the panel and the
readers of the novella do not question it, hence another form of how considerate
communication is being used in different areas of the novella (Weisburg, 9 , 162).
Vere s communication in chapter 21 is result oriented, thus he cleverly uses specific
language for his own motivations. Not once did he let the jury know that Billy had
an intense stutter; because he omitted this detail, his argument was considerate in the
sense that he selectively relayed information to the jury, as Minda further reasons. In
Vere s final argument, he exercises the same form of deception he advises the officers
to use on the people of the ship. Different dimensions of considerate communication
are happening in the story. While Captain Vere is being considerate with the way he
uses language in the trial scene, Melville is considerate in the way he portrays the
story. In each instance, the authority has his audience in mind, whether it be the three

Throughout the film 12 Angry Men, Juror #8 argues eleven men to prove the
innocence of the young man who is on trial for the murder of his father. In the
beginning of the film, the vote is guilty, eleven and not guilty, one. But as time goes
on, Juror #8 has strong evidence to prove his point that the young man is not guilty.
He takes into consideration that the decision these men makes is life or death, if they
agree that he is guilty then he will be sent to the electric chair. After several hours of
arguments and review of evidence, they unanimously chose not guilty. The filmends
with Juror #8 and Juror #9 introducing themselves and then going their separate ways,
never finding out if the young man was prosecuted as guilty or not guilty. This
cliffhanger leaves the audience to decide for themselves, guilty or not guilty? Even
though Juror #9 had strong evidence and influenced the whole jury, I believe the
young man is guilty. There is more evidence proving that he is guilty, than he is
not guilty. The first piece of evidence that helps prove that the young man is guilty
is the testify of the old man who lived downstairs. He heard the young man scream
at the top of his lungs, I m going to kill you! , a body hitting the floor, and then saw
the man running downstairs out of the house. Juror #8 argues that he could not
have possibly heard a scream with the L train making a loud noise. Living in San
Francisco, I have been near BART and Muni my whole life, and both of those
public transportation systems make loud noises when passing by, but not loud
enough that I cannot not hear someone above me screaming at the top of their
lungs, especially a threat like that. Also if the old man could not hear what was
going on because of the train, then why did he get out of his bed and go to the door
at around midnight? He was obviously woken up by the loud thud and the yelling
and was curious to see what was happening. Another argument that Juror #8 had
about the old man was that the old man could not have walked to the door in about
15 seconds because of the distance and a limp in his left leg due to a stroke. His

For my visual art critique, I attend the Texas State University Wittliff Collections
on Tuesday, October tenth. During my visit I viewed works of art from the
Lonesome Dove collection. The first piece of work I critiques was the photograph
Crossing the Rio Grande taken by Bill Wittliff. This photo was taken on the set of
the Lonesome Dove in 1988. What stood out to me was the significance of how real
this photo is. So many slaves have tried to cross this river to escape persecution and
slavery. Although, in this instance the photo is depicting three cowboys or horseman
crossing the Rio Grande River in pursuit of cattle driving thousands of cattle from
Texas up north to Montana. Although this photo is quite iconic in relation to this
history of Texas I do not believe this piece of work along with many others from this
exhibit should be deemed canonical. I personally rate this piece of work a four and a
half, out of ten simply because while it is a great piece of art; it is the type of work I
would like to hang in my bathroom above my toilet so while I am urinating I can
view a nice manly piece of art.
