Essay on A Comparison of The Signalman and The Darkness...
A Comparison of The Signalman and The Darkness Out There
'The Signalman' was set in an era in which Victorian language was still used, meanwhile 'The
Darkness Out There' is a more modern age story. 'The Signalman', set 100 years before 'The
Darkness Out There' was the story of a troubled man. His troubles are the main reasons for his
death. The reader is unaware as to whether or not the Signalman's death was a consequence of his
paranoia or a matter of coincidence.' The Darkness Out There' is an example of the cruelty within
people, though considered a horror story, the only horror in this story is from the shock of
Mrs.Rutter's lack of compassion for the German pilot.'The Signalman' and 'The ... Show more

Rutter's cottage it seems like a refuge from the outside world. "There was a view from the
window….and a square of shaggy grass."
In the beginning of 'The Darkness Out There' the narrator immediately describes the beautiful day in
which Sandra was walking through a field on a "bright day". Automatically the story has been set.
The use of adjectives to describe the day also added to the height of standard of setting, by
describing the bright day so intensely the writer adds suspense and climax.
The setting in 'The Darkness Out there' changed from the warmth which was the bright day to the
darkness which was 'Packer's End'. The setting in 'The Signalman' doesn't change as much. From the
very beginning of the story the story's setting had a daunting sense of unease from the words the
narrator uses to describe the cutting. 'The Signalman' was set in a rural lonely area; the narrator
instantaneously describes the signalman's post. "His Post was in as solitary and dismal a place as I
ever saw." By saying the post was "Dismal" the narrator sets the whole story. The lonesome post
was also a very nasty dirty place. The narrator describes it as a "dungeon". The dirtier and haunting
the signalman's post got the more the setting and the characters were revealed.
The Signal box was the refuge from

Theoretical Perspectives on Reading Instruction Essays
Introduction Since the reading movements of the 1980's and 1990's, many different theoretical
perspectives on teaching reading have been proposed. This paper will examine and discuss major
themes, issues, and influences derived from theoretical perspectives on reading instruction that have
been proposed since the 1980's. This paper will also examine four articles related to themes and
issues taken from the State University library about reading instruction. The author will relay these
articles from the library; to current classroom and personal experiences. Research in Learning Style
and Reading: Implications for Instruction The first article that we will examine is by Marie Carbo
and entitled, "Research in Learning ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

account of the classroom's formal (hard chairs, desks, etc) or informal, (sofa, pillows, rugs, etc)
design which can affect a students' learning either positively or negatively in the classroom.
Perceptual strengths preferences are explained by Carbo as when, "Students learn new material
through their strongest modality with reinforcement being provided through the students' second
strongest modality" (1984). Carbo believes that reading should be taught to students using a large
array of multi–sensory devices that include the use of games, books on tapes, filmstrips, word and
letter cards made from sandpaper, beads, etc. Under the perceptual development heading; the article
brings out that young children are more tactile/kinesthetic/visual learners and that students at this
stage learns best with the use of "holistic" reading instructions. According to Carbo research on
comparisons across grade levels students in lower grade levels should have ample opportunities for
movement and intake during reading instructions, while older students may prefer to work more
independently using newspapers, magazines, trade books, etc. Carbo research of comparisons across
achievement levels, also found that students that were poor readers may require clearer directions,
immediate feedback, more

Descriptive Language In The Contender By Robert Lipsyte
"Description begins in the writer's imagination, but should finish in the reader's." –Stephen King.
Descriptive language helps to create a picture in the reader's mind. Authors can create descriptive
language through narration or dialogue. In the novel The Contender, by Robert Lipsyte, the author
uses descriptive language and dialogue to develop the characters and the setting. In The Contender,
the author Robert Lipsyte uses descriptive language throughout the whole story. One example of
descriptive language in the story is on page 47. It says, "The second sit up was harder than the first,
and the third was harder still. But by the fourth sit up his muscles began to get warm, like a car
engine heating up on a cold morning.." In the text it says that each sit up was harder than the last but
by the last sit up he began to get used to it. This quote shows you what the character, Alfred, is doing
and how it felt to do the activity he was doing physically. A second example of descriptive language
in the story is on page 54. It says, "Alfred caught his breath. It was huge. It was almost a circle, and
the seats rose right up the walls toward a ceiling of cables and beams. In the center of the floor,
gleaming white under hundreds of spotlights, was the ring. The ropes were wrapped in velvet." In
this quote the author is trying to paint a picture in the reader's mind by using descriptive words like
"huge" and "wrapped in velvet" to describe items, objects and the setting that the

Strength-Based Approach To Social Work
Introduction It is important for programs in which families attend be diverse, locally accessible and
promote social justice. This allows growth for children, youth and families to develop in the right
setting and gain strength and resilience. Everyone has a different story and having programs that are
specific to one group of people that share something in common gives those in the program the
opportunity to develop. The Military Family Resource Centre is a prime example of a program that
uses the strength–based approach to help clients where they are in life. This is done by using social
location (which is groups people belong to based on their location in society), diversity and social
justice within the programs offered. There is always ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This can be done by looking at their social location, their diversity and advocating and providing
social justice. My own social location plays into looking into what action could take place to make
the centre's a better place for children. My suggestions include having programming for children and
youth who are feeling anxious or depressed about their life situation. Military children, youth and
families are uniquely different and programming for them need to be sensitive. The Military Family
Resource Centre's across Canada create an open and safe place for children, youth, and families,
advocates for their needs, in a diverse and unique way. The centre's create programming that are
inclusive, informative, gives everyone a voice and makes sure everyone's rights are being served

The Pros And Cons Of Phonics And Whole Language
Phonics is the theory of leaning established in the 19th century and states children need to break
down the complex skill of reading into smaller components like letters before they move on to larger
components like sounds, words, and sentences. The phonetic reading theory teaches children to
dissect unfamiliar words into parts and then join the parts together to form words. When children
learn the letter–sound relationship, they are provided with a decoding formula they can apply
whenever they encounter an unfamiliar word (Curtis, 1997, p. 1).
The pros and cons of phonics:
Builds better pronunciation
Reinforces word recognition
Children can use systematic approach to decode unfamiliar words
Less memory intensive and guess work

1) Our textbook states that children benefit from both styles of learning, phonics and whole
language. By using both styles, the teacher blends early phonics instructions into the teaching of
reading stressing the importance of oral vocabulary, auditory discrimination, phonological
awareness, syllable awareness, onset–time awareness and phoneme awareness. (Gordon & Browne,
2014, p. 392)
I do not recall the phonics approach to leaning when I was in school; however, I do remember my
children learning from this style when they were in school so I would say they were taught both
phonics and whole language. My research and the text book supports both teaching styles and I
would have to agree from what I have witnessed on my own children and grandchildren,
incorporating both styles is the best way to teach language and literacy. I have not yet had the
opportunity to teach, but when I do, my plan would be to incorporate both into my lesson plans.

Theme Of Where The Gods Fly
It is normal to fear what you don't understand, and when we fear something we tend to dis–tance
ourselves from it. So try to imagine having to raise your child in a foreign country where you don't
speak the language or understand the culture. Slowly you get to see your child loose their cultural
identity and replace it with a different one; one you don't understand. What do you do? Do you
watch them go down a path you don't approve, or do you interfere force them to go in the right
direction? This difficulty of adapting in a new country is on of the main themes in the short story
"where the Gods Fly" written by the Chinese American author Jean Kwok in 2012, where a mother
has a hard time watching her daughter adapt into a world, she doesn't understand herself.
The mother tells the story as a first person narrator, which means that the whole story is ex–
perienced through her eyes, which has a significant effect on the opinion of the reader. The reader
gets a great look inside of her mind, which helps the reader understand her character. And
furthermore lets the reader experience the trip down memory lane she takes throughout the course of
the story, while she tries to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

thought of what I am about to do stings my eyes like incense."(p. 1, l. 1), but she does what she
thinks is best for her daughter. As a way of explaining herself, she goes through all the important
events that has led up to this moment, as some sort of flashback, where she reminisce on the past in
retrospect and points out what she did wrong, "And somehow the con–sequences of that initial
instinct to protect her have branched out through the years, sprouting and twisting, to arrive at this
moment." (p. 1, l.

Personal Narrative Essay : My Mother As A Little Mother
Mom's Wisdom
Since I was a little girl my mother always taught to be strong, but in a mannerly way. She had to
grow up quite fast, because she was born into a warzone, which made her very independent and
strong at a young age. In our culture, it's unusual to have a friendship with your parents because it
should be more of a private relationship. Thankfully, my parents and I had an open relationship
about everything and get to express my feelings without having to hide them. For my mother, she
witnessed things kids her age should not, she gone through things many did not, and she also
suffered a lot of pain and deaths of her loved ones. "I remember being so scared of my mother's
corpse, and I had to ask myself why I was scared, the woman lying there is my mother," she said as
she was reminiscing about her mother's death. I wondered to myself of how it must have been for
her; but she continued on to tell me the story. "A few months later we lost your uncle and we didn't
worry because we knew that mom was up there waiting for him, but then we had your oldest brother
and he died from an overdose on malaria vaccination when he was only seven months." Hearing her
going through that made me feel like I got stabbed in the chest. I just sat there and thought about
how empty and lonely she must have felt during those years. She later told me, "sometimes we lose
the big things in our lives so that our eyes can open up to all the little things we take for granted."

Effects Of Reading Instruction On The Literacy Development...
The Effects of Reading Instruction on Students of Low–Socioeconomic Status
Amelia K.L. Reynolds
Edmond, Oklahoma
Abstract
This paper explores related research in aspects of language acquisition, specifically, reading
instruction and its effect on students who live in low socioeconomic environments. We will review
the methods of explicit phonics and whole language to examine what, if any, is the more
advantageous method of reading instruction for students who live in poverty. The purpose of this
literature review is to investigate the impacts of specific reading instruction on the literacy
development of children and how socioeconomics restricts these impacts. The research reviewed
was collected from peer review journals using the Central Search feature on the UCO Chambers
Library website. The majority of the researcher's findings came from EBSCOhost Education
Research Complete and JSTOR: Journal Storage. Given the findings of this literature review,
research suggests that explicit phonics instruction, when embedded in a whole language classroom,
promotes growth in literacy skills among young children. Research suggests that multisensory
phonics, based on Orton–Gillingham Approach, promotes literacy growth for students who are at–
risk, however, its impact within a whole language classroom are undetermined. This literature
review suggests that multisensory phonics should be utilized in a whole language classroom to
determine if its use promotes growth in

Essay on Phonics and Whole language methods
Phonics and Whole language methods
Phonics is a technique that teaches beginning readers to associate a particular sound with each letter
of the alphabet or letter combination (Unger, 1996). Students receive explicit instruction in the
mechanics of reading before they begin the actual process.
Once students know what sounds correspond with each letter or letter combination, they move on to
sounding out words. The English language has only about forty–four sounds, so when students
begin to read, they move along in strict order so that he or she only sees words whose letter sounds
they have already learned (Flesch, 1983). An example from Rudolf Flesch's book Why Johnny Still
Can't Read is that students would have learned the sounds ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The other popular technique of reading instruction is whole language, also known as the "look–say"
method. It has roots that reach back to the 1920s, when some teachers favored "experience charts" in
place of text books (Chall, 1992). Two of whole language instruction's biggest advocates are Ken
Goldman and Frank Smith. In the late 1960s, they observed that adults seemed to process written
word without recoding it letter by letter, or sound by sound. Based on this, Goodman and Smith
claimed that children should learn to read naturally, as they learn to speak, and that breaking words
down into sounds was unnecessary (Moats, 2000). The basic focus of whole language learning is
less on the rules and repetitions that are prevalent in phonics instruction, and more on the meaning
of the text and how it flows. Whole language emphasizes reading for meaning, and uses language in
ways that relate to the students lives directly (Curtis, 1997). Sounding out words, as used in phonics,
is not used in this type of instruction. Whole language experts advise that "most students will learn
to read and write with no explicit instruction in phonics and spelling" (Moats, 2000). Students are
encouraged to decode words in context, and they are taught that the answers are not as important as
the process (Haring, 1998). Often, teachers will advise students to use pictures in the story to help
them figure out

Personal Narrative: Moving To A Whole New Language
It was like stepping into a whole new world, a whole new life. Moving to a different country
changes everything from the food, the clothes, the culture, and even the air. One area of the move
that impacted my sister and I the most was a new school. Not knowing one of the most popular
languages in the world made things very difficult, however, both my sister and I quickly adapted to
the new language, and soon enough our parents would advise us not to forget our native tongue. At a
young age I believed that I could never speak another language, but as the years passed, I became
more comfortable in speaking English. I was proud of myself that I accomplished something that I
doubted I could do. Throughout my journey of learning English my parents

particular way". Motivation is also defined as "Desire or willingness to do something". So, what
really motivates Saroo to embark on this expedition to find home? Home is where his family is, and
Saroo aspires that he arrives as per planned but most importantly for Saroo, it is about the
destination and not the journey for him. Although in the beginning the destination is unclear, the
journey is set as he makes his way into India, exploring the areas of what he believes he used to call
home. As he embarked on the plane to head 'home' he questions his motives,
"Was I Doing the right thing? Did I really need to find out about the past when I had all of these
people who loved me very much here with me now? Yes. Of course the answer was yes. I had to
find out where I was from, if I could, even if only to put it behind me. I wanted to see the place I had
been dreaming about for decades. I got on the plane." (Brierley, 173).
Another boost of motivation for Saroo is through the love expressed by all of the people who have

his girlfriend Lisa, and other students with Indian backgrounds aswell; all of which brought Saroo's

Louisa Cook Moats Whole Language
Summary of "Whole Language Lives On: The Illusion of Balanced Reading Instruction" by Louisa
Cook Moats In this article, Moats provides an overview of the whole language reading instruction
approach as well as a critique of the approach, its shortcomings in literacy based on scientific
studies, how and why it is still pervasive in classrooms today, and how educators can fix the
situation. First, Moats presents the reader with the background of the phonics instruction versus
whole language instruction "reading wars" debate which led many educators to try to synthesize the
two different types of language instruction under what she refers to as "balanced literacy". Whole
language is literacy approach that deemphasizes phonics in favor of meaning; advocates of this
approach believe that literacy is similar to natural language acquisition therefore children can
acquire skills through exposure to print and teaching modeling without explicit phonics instruction.

Moat argues that learning to read is in fact not a natural process and students need explicit phonics
instruction. Furthermore, the English alphabetic writing system cannot be learned simply from print
exposure: students need to be taught how to develop phonological awareness to sound words out to
help them learn how to read and without the support of context–based word recognition. Whole
language's legacy is still embedded in educational practices despite being disproven by scholars,
thus Moat advocates for updating state language–arts standards, assessments, and textbooks to
reflect direct, explicit phonics–based instruction as the best approach in teaching literacy. She also
notes that teacher licensing requirements and preparation programs also need to be informed of
effective literacy instructions that is supported by

Phonics vs Whole Language Essay
To use Phonics or Whole Language? That is the Question There is a battle going on elementary
schools across the Globe. This battle is not a malicious battle fought with armies and weapons of
mass destruction, but rather a tactical battle where the two opponents are known to us by the simple
phrases, phonics and whole language. These two opponents use very different styles, but those who
use a certain style swear by it almost religiously. Seriously, though, one might be asking the
question which is the best method for teachings young students how to read? Honestly, there is not a
simple answer; education specialists have been arguing over the issue of phonics vs whole language
for years and a definite answer still has yet to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Those who oppose phonics also feel that the drills and texts used to teach phonics bore students
which just increases to their lack of comprehension. At a certain age, students need to focus more on
reading for meaning and enjoyment, but the method of phonics does not focus on incorporating
these two areas. However, the second method being discussed in this paper, the whole language
approach, focuses much of its attention on making sure the student understands and enjoys what he
or she is reading. Whole language instruction occurs when a student acquires language rather than
learning it through direct instruction (Brooks 35–36). This method is more child centered than
teacher dominated, because the objective is for the student to learn how to read through talking and
doing rather than through passive listening. Unlike phonics, whole language uses a variety of ways
to give students the opportunity to interact with the text they are reading. Questioning, discussing,
problem–solving, listening, writing, drawing, and dramatizing are among the ways students interact
with text. Students are also encouraged to implement simple strategies while reading such as:
reading the sentence and guessing what word will come next, looking at the picture on the page to
help figure out the sentence, and also rereading the sentence for clarification. This method also does
a good job in allowing the students to engage in text at their own speed and often in their own ways
(36).

The Fifth Child by Doris Lessing Essay
The Fifth Child by Doris Lessing
The character of Ben Lovatt in Doris Lessing's "The Fifth Child" is one that is very powerful, and
also extremely interesting. He is violent, and unbelievably strong, yet he would not be able to fend
for himself in the "big, bad World". Doris Lessing's use of a very effective mixture of
characterisation, symbolism and language use result in a very intriguing and fascinating novel.
At the start of the novel, the reader is lulled into a sense of happiness and perfection in the lives of
Harriet and David. The description of the house that they buy gives the impression that they have

She is in constant pain, and unable to do anything at all. The pain even becomes so unbearable that
she has to take steroids to mitigate the pain. The baby inside of her is often referred to as "the

things are not right, with the pregnancy, and the baby inside of Harriet. Harriet has a really hard time
of things whilst carrying Ben inside of her. She is constantly in pain, and thus resulting in her being
extremely snappy towards others. This gives the impression that things are on the decline.
The fifth child causes David and Harriet to drift further apart. It becomes so extreme that they are
sleeping in different rooms. This is a really big sign that the relationship between Harriet and David
is waning. This is a big thing because they were a very happy couple before there was any presence
of Ben, whether it was inside of Harriet or after he was born.
"At night, David heard her moan, or whimper, but now he did not offer comfort, for it seems that she
did not find his arms around her any help"
This shows how badly things had become between David and Harriet.

point where she has to secretly visit her children in their beds so

How WW Jacobs Creates a Sense of Horror in The Monkey’s...
Jacobs creates a sense of horror in 'The Monkey's Paw' by using a variety of literary techniques. As
'The Monkey's Paw' was written in 1902, Jacobs makes the story scary in ways that are very
different to modern horror films and books. We can tell that the story was written in the early
twentieth century as it contains many details that would have been common in Victorian literature.
One of the most obvious features from 'The Monkey's Paw' that tells us that the story was written
over a century ago, is the old–fashioned language that Jacobs uses. The language used throughout
the story contains words such as 'rubicund' and 'visage', which are not words that are commonly
used today. Also, the fact that £200 was considered to be a lot of ... Show more content on

Instead, he uses subtle hints in most aspects of the story to build up an element of terror and one of
these aspects is the way that Jacobs uses setting. The main way in which Jacobs uses setting to
increase the tension in 'The Monkey's Paw', is the way that he creates contrast between the wild
outside weather and the cosy atmosphere inside the Whites' home. At the beginning of the story,
Jacobs describes the night as 'cold and wet', whereas Jacobs describes the Whites' home by writing
'the fire burned brightly'. This contrast makes the reader associate the outside with dark, cold and
bad while associating the inside with light, warm and good. There is one thing that is keeping the
White family safe from the badness of the outside, and that is the blinds. The blinds are drawn in
part 1 of 'The Monkey's Paw' when the Whites are a cosy, normal family protected from grief and
terror. However, in part 3 of the story when Mrs White is looking for Herbert to come back from the
dead, Jacobs writes 'the old woman, with burning eyes, walked to the window and raised the blind'. I
think that the blind is a symbol for a barrier that protects the Whites from the danger of the outside
and when Mrs White raises the blind to look for her son she lets some of that danger into her home.
Also, the visitors bring some of the danger and badness from the outside into the Whites' home
when they visit. For example, when the Sergeant–Major visits, he brings the monkey's

Naturally Artificial: The Increasing Movement to Purchase...
There is a movement, mostly advanced in western civilizations by middle class white people, to be
greener, more eco–friendly, or more natural. This movement focuses on consumers purchasing
products that are conservation minded, not on the reduction of consumerism and production. These
products are generally more expensive than their less earth friendly counterparts, and typically have
the words 'all natural', 'recycled', or 'eco–friendly' smattered across a label with earth tone colors.
But what does it mean to be natural? Is natural better than unnatural or artificial? Are humans a part
of, or separate from, nature? One could surmise that being natural would mean that it is of nature,
whether it is grown in nature, or has innate characteristics. Humans have not yet altered it, thus
rendering this natural thing, unnatural. What does this mean to us? Well, there are perhaps thousands
of marketing campaigns saying that one product or another is natural. But how can that be? It is a
product produced by man. It may imitate nature, but does this imitation make the product natural? Is
an organic carrot grown in a greenhouse less natural than a carrot found in an unkempt field? When
it comes to foods, natural and organic mean different things, organic food labels promise the
consumer that the food was simply grown, it was not genetically altered, sprayed with pesticides, or
hormones and it is GMO free. Natural food may be altered genetically, but

Essay on Using the Power of both Phonics and Whole Language
Whichever way you learned to read, chances are you never knew what the terms "phonics" or
"whole language" meant. However, these are the terms that are at opposite ends of an on–going
debate over the best way to teach children how to read. "Simply stated, supporters of the whole
language approach think children's literature, writing activities, and communication activities can be
used across the curriculum to teach reading; backers of phonics instruction insist that a direct,
sequential mode of teaching enables students to master reading in an organized way" (Cromwell,

Children learn, memorize, and apply rules, formulas, and patterns of reading and speech (Curtis,
1997; Wiber, 2002). This approach has also been called a "bottom–up" approach because the
teachers believe that by focusing on the smaller parts and equipping children with the ability to
figure out new words, meaning and comprehension will follow. The strong supporters on this side of
the debate want phonics taught in an intensive and systematic manner (Strickland, 1998). These
phonics supporters criticize whole language, claiming that the approach is too disorganized and
phonics taught in such an incidental manner that some children will never have the right tools to
learn to read well (Cromwell, 1997).
There are many advantages to using phonics. Children who learn to read by using phonics generally
have better pronunciation, spelling, and word recognition. They have been given a tool that can be
used over and over again while reading and writing, without having to memorize vocabulary and
spelling of the words (Curtis, 1997). There are also many examples of how explicit, intensive and
systematic phonics can work well in classrooms. One of these examples is the reading program
developed in California. After years of implementing whole language instruction in their
classrooms, reading scores in the state dropped to be among the nation's worst.

Phonics vs. whole language? Essay
Phonics vs. whole language?
Like other issues of education, educators and theorists debate and analyze methods of reading
instruction. They judge methods and curricula not only by their efficacy but also by their
appropriateness and ease. Throughout the history of education these methods and curricula have
changed, shifted, and transformed. Currently, though, there are two front–runners in the debate–
phonics and whole language. Popular belief is that these curricula are diametrically opposed.
Researchers of effective reading instruction assert the opposite, saying that "an artificial, simplistic
dichotomy" has no reality in the discussion of phonics and whole language (Dahl & Scharer, 2000,
¶43). The purpose of this research paper is to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the 1930s and 1940s, it was used as a final, remedial approach for those learners who had
trouble with word recognition and memory (DeMoulin et al., 1999, ¶4). In the 1950s, though,
Rudolph Flesch wrote Why Johnny Can't Read, placing a more brilliant spotlight on phonics
instruction. He developed a curriculum of 72 lessons, outlining over 200 letter–to–letter
relationships that represented the fundamental sounds of the English language (DeMoulin et al.,
1999, ¶4–5). By the 1960s, phonics had taken on a more positive reputation with the help of Jeanne
Chall, author of Learning to Read: The Great Debate. Today, phonics is one of the front–runners in
the "reading wars" (Chall, 1992, p. 316). Its history speaks strongly for this method of instruction;
however, phonics is quickly falling into the ideological quagmire of the past two decades.
Despite this ideology, phonics remains an easily understood method of instruction. As stated in the
previous section, phonics relies upon phonemes or units of speech. Many of today's phonics
curricula, like Flesch's approach, include the 200 letter–to–letter relationships that represent these
phonemes. The relationship of phonemes to each other, then, leads the learner to the other phonics
concepts: segmentation, decoding, and encoding. Segmentation and decoding are very similar,
referring to the practice of breaking words into individual phonemes. The reader is, in a sense,

Whole Language Approach To Teach Literacy In The United...
The US has a major discussion on how literacy should be taught. There are two main ways to teach
literacy; one way is called the "whole language" and the other way is a pure "phonics" approach.
The "Whole Language Approach" (WLA) mainly combines meaning with learning to read It is
founded on the belief that gaining reading skills flows from reading interesting, exciting, and well–
written stories and books (picture on the top left). Secondly, the pure "phonics" approach examines
the parts of words in order to "sound out" or decode new words (picture on the top right). Moreover,
the WLA is a philosophy that stresses the importance of children being metacognitive. It focuses on
"children making sense of skills used in reading and writing, as

The book and the movie of the same name, The house of sand and fog which is a movie about the
conflict that arises over who is rightful owner of a small bungalow along the California coastline.
The story in of itself is amazingly refreshing as the whole story doesn't really have a protagonist or
antagonist because at points in the story all characters are a little bit of both.
The book's and the follow up movie's main theme are about how different people's hopes can collide
and how dangerous it is when they do. (Perelman, 2003) The novel was well written and unique

Organizational Culture Aspects Essay
Organizational Culture Aspects
The impact of culture is very important when it comes to attempting and achieving personal goals
and business goals. Organizational cultures are the characteristics that are based on morals, values,
traditions and personnel behavior. Values are very important because people act out upon his or her
values, and values channel behavior. Saying and doing the right thing are two different things and if
managers are trying to set the culture they have to set the example. Physical manifestations such as
ethical codes or written rules are some ways the organization reflects its values. General Electric,

We all have heard the slogan "We never forget who we are working for." Well, that is exactly what

companies are customer based and like General Electric they also "depend upon the imaginations,
intelligence and curiosity of its employees" (2008) to serve customers better. Diversity is accepted
and welcomed at Lockheed Martin because they rely heavily on teamwork. Ethical standards and
behaviors are given to all from top executive leadership positions to every level at the corporation.
They have values they rely on to respect each person's individuality. Do what is right, Respect
others, Perform with excellence.
Creating the right culture is not easy but there are programs that help alleviate conflicts. For
example, Lockheed uses the internet base software programs that give training on ethics and legal
compliances. This type of training can address different topics such as sexual harassment and with
technology has helped many companies in giving training where there is no time for seminars.

Phonics vs. Whole Language
What is the best method for teaching children to read? This is probably not something that a lot of
people think about on a regular basis. However, I think it is very important to discuss the ways in
which children learn to read. Reading has become a very important element in our society. With the
rapid advancement of America, having good reading skills is essential to getting ahead in jobs and
even in making dinner. Children are the future doctors, lawyers, and presidents of our country and I,
as a future teacher, wouldn't want to send children out into the world with poor reading skills. I also
think it is important to discuss reading methods because I see, after doing an interview with a ...

When I decided to use reading as my research topic, I thought I could take on the whole concept of
reading, but I soon learned that reading is a complex subject that has many methods. According to
the International Reading Association, "A reading method is a set of teaching and learning materials
and / or activities often given a label, such as phonics method, literature based method, or language
experience method" ("Using Multiple Methods").
This definition shows that many practices for reading can be called reading method. From the
aforementioned reading methods definition and from doing a small amount of research, I decided I
would narrow the focus of my research paper to the reading methods of whole language and
phonics. I chose to focus on the concepts of whole language and phonics because for many years
they have been among the most popular reading methods and because of the ongoing debate
surrounding which method is better than the other –– a debate which has caused a constant push –
pull trend in these methods. For a while it will pull towards whole language, but then the trend
switches to focus on phonics (the current trend). After more research on the concepts of whole
language and phonics, I came to believe that this debate between methods the debate between whole
language and phonics is an artificial dilemma, and isn't really about one method or the other when
both methods could be combined.

I Had a Job I Liked Once by Guy Vanderhaeghe
I Had a Job I liked. Once. Guy Vanderhaegh takes us back a few decades in the retelling of a court
case in small town, Saskatchewan in the play, "I Had a Job I liked. Once." Using elements of style,
staging and developing characters throughout the play Vanderhaegh portrays to the audience the
theme of the biases and prejudices that come with living in a small town. The story is set in small
town Saskatchewan in a police station office, on the night of August of 1957. Corporal Heasman has
brought in Les Grant on the account of accused rape Tracy Tolbertson, and the play follows the

the cruel things about Les on the wall. Les has had to deal with his rough family life growing up
which automatically causes people to judge him. Heasman describes them as a "Bad bunch, the

but all these outside influences came into making him make a bad decision. As he explained to

The Scarlet Ibis Figurative Language Analysis
The way and words used to tell a story determine how the story will be perceived. If the story uses
lots of details, diction, and figurative language then it will be most likely a well told story. Although
if a story is not told with these things it can be hard to interpret what is trying to be said. In the short
story, "The Scarlet Ibis",uses all these things to tell an amazing story with a plot that could go
anywhere. The author, James Hurst, of "The Scarlet Ibis" illustrates diction and figurative language
to prove that the tone is hope, discouragement, and pride.
The author creates a tone of hope when he starts to talk about his memories of Doodle first signs of
being normal. According to the text, "Finally one day, after many weeks of ... Show more content on

The author points out, "But all of us must have something or someone to be proud of, and Doodle
had become mine. I did not know then that pride is a wonderful, terrible thing, a seed that bears two
vines, life and death."(32). The tone here is shown by a metaphor which describes the different types
of pride. This quote proves that he loves having Doodle to have someone to root for, but when he
does not succeed there is no pride. This is when there is a quick mood shift for the reader but the
figurative language used explains it. According to the author, "'What are you crying for?' asked
Daddy, but I couldn't answer. They did not know that I did it for myself, that pride, whose slave I
was, spoke to me louder than all their voices, and that Doodle walked only because I was ashamed
of having a crippled brother." This quote uses diction like ashamed and slave to show that his
brother's accomplishments were all from his own selfish wants. This creates a mood of being upset
because while there is pride for Doodle, the brother is being selfish because he wanted a normal
brother. Overall, pride can be a uplifting but can also be for someone's own selfish reasons.
In the short story, "The Scarlet Ibis" showed that diction and figurative language was used for
creating the tone of hope, disappointment, and pride. This story was one with a plot that could have
gone anywhere or done anything. This kind of story is the one that needs to be told with good
diction and figurative language. In conclusion, this kind of thing creates a great tone that will makes
any story an amazing one. The tone is the way the whole story is perceived and what the mood

Hansberry Make The Turning Point Of Karl Lindner
Explore the ways in which Hansberry makes the first visit of Karl Lindner such an intense scene.
Hansberry's play captures how Chicago (and America in general) was around the 1950's; although
Chicago claimed to be anti–racist, Hansberry shows what life was like for black families in that day
and age. It also has elements from her own life in it, making it a more realistic story. Hansberry used
many techniques to create a build–up of tension until Karl Lindner came out with what he had to
say, which was racially prejudiced and very discriminatory towards the family. This was the turning
point in the play where everything they worked for was starting to go wrong. A way tension was

Lindner is very nervous and seems to not know how to tackle the situation, therefore he tries to
avoid it for a great period of time and sends Beneatha through different states of emotion. At first
Beneatha is quick to understand what he is aiming to say but later on Lindner misleads her by saying
"I am sure you people must be aware of some of the incidents which have happened in various parts
of the city, when coloured people moved into certain areas." By this he meant violence directed
toward the Black families that moved into white neighbourhoods – this could also be a masked
threat towards the family. Afterwards, he tells them that he and his neighbourhood not only 'deplore
that kind of thing' but they are trying to do something about it. After he says this it seems as though
he is going to say something more pleasant, he has also got the family encouraging him to do so.
This increases the tension because it is right before the message is clear, you can see that by the way
Lindner is talking, which is clearer and there is no constant manipulation of his word order. He is
also gaining confidence to finish up his 'speech.' It is also stated clearly in the stage directions "
(more encouraged by such affirmation)." The family at this point is expecting something positive
from him, but after he says "Our people out there feel that people get along better, take more of a
common interest in the life of the community, when they share a common background." To put it
simply, he and his neighbourhood are telling them that they are unwanted just because they do not
have a 'common background' by this meaning skin colour. Lindner also thinks that the family is
willing to agree and he is willing to buy back the house. This leaves the family in utter disbelief, you
can see this when Ruth exclaims "ain't this a living gall!" Meaning 'how does he

Is Animation A Whole Other Language? Essay
Glossary of Terms
Introduction
Animation is a whole other language in its own way, you could have a silent animation but it still
expresses so much. The main reason why I have choose animation is because I want to Entertain,
express idea's and also discuss and share what I personally think about gender and the stereotypes
associated with today's culture. To express myself in another language and these terms I have picked
will help me in that accomplishment.
Term A "Entertainment"
Entertainment is to provide fun, joy, amusement or a distraction. A distraction from the real world,
to take the audience to another world, another place entirely that's creates a sense of enjoyment for
all to see. It can also usually involve some sort of performance, like a party, film, concert, events
(Carnival, Theme Park, Circus and Theater), etc. It also is a type of creative media, which can
influence the reader / intended audience emotionally, whether that'd be happy, sad, angry and or
scared to relate to the character / theme. Entertainment could also be seen as an exercise for the
mind, it makes you think about the occurrences in a film sense of amusement. It's also is used to
express some sort of story or a message of some kind to the audience / readers. After all
entertainment is there for our leisure but it can teach us a lesson, such as not to eat too much fairy
floss at the carnival or an even deeper meaning behind a Disney film for example "Inside Out".

Essay about Phonics and Whole Language
Phonics and Whole Language A great debate whether the phonetic approach or whole language
approach should be used in the classroom has been occurring since the early nineteen thirties, and
there has not been a definite decision on which approach should be used to teach in the classroom.
To understand this debate, one must first understand the differences between whole language and
phonics learning.
The Definition of Phonics
Many people are confused by the term phonics, because the term can literally have two meanings.

Time for a Change?
The school systems have had educational backgrounds molded after whole language, and its time
for a phonics approach. It is now more crucial than ever for a change in the system. It would be
impossible to expect the educational system to completely change the way children are learning to
read, but the system must make small, quick changes over a short period of time to encompass the
use of the phonics approach. Not all children have the same learning capabilities, and that is one of
the main arguments against phonics. Many people in opposition say that not all children can learn
from the phonics approach. What people opposed to phonics do not understand is that phonics can
be incorporated into the learning process along with whole language to ensure a balance and
complete understanding of the English language (Unkown, 1994). With whole language as the basis
to the learning process, I believe that the schools are giving out good grade cards to children who
are good at guessing and memorizing words. With this in place, parents don't realize that their
children are being taught to guess instead of learning to read properly. It seems as though the
schools have placed more priority on self–esteem and appraisal than on literacy. It has come to a
point where

Four Theories : Learning And Read
Four Theories: Learning to Read Learning to read is beginning to develop earlier in elementary
grades. Students are expected to be emergent readers by the time he or she leaves kindergarten and
enters first grade. If a child is not, he or she is labeled as being behind. According to Hughes (2007)
emergent readers are using early reading strategies in consistently, read easy patterned text, retell
text with simple storyline, and respond to text at a literal level. Hughes (2007) also says literacy
develops in young children through play, daily conversation and interactions with text of all kinds.
Many children come with emergent literacy skills; can recognize signs and labels, scribble letters,
retell stories by pointing at pictures and talking about them, and some have varying degrees of
phonemic and phonological awareness. This essay will define and explain implication for each
theory in learning to read.
Cueing Systems The cueing system is made up of four cueing systems: Grapho–phonemic,
Syntactic, Semantic, and Pragmatic. Each is used in language development and are important for
communication. Grapho–phonemic cues are related to the sounds we hear (both individual letters
and letter combinations), the letters of the alphabet and the conventions of print (Hughes, The Four
Cueing Systems, 2007). Syntactic cueing system is having knowledge about language. The syntactic
system provides information about the form and the structure of the language, including whether or

Balance Literacy vs. Whole Language
Whole language is considered a "top down" approach where the reader constructs a personal
meaning for a text based on using their prior knowledge to interpret the meaning of what they are
reading. Teachers are expected to provide a literacy rich environment for their students and to
combine speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Whole language teachers emphasize the meaning
of texts over the sounds of letters, and phonics instruction becomes just one component of the whole
language classroom. Problems associated with whole language include a lack of structure that has
been traditionally supplied by the scope and sequence, lessons and activities, and extensive graded
literature found in basal readers. Whole language puts a heavy burden ... Show more content on

Children can learn to assemble phonemes into words as well as break words into their phonemes
even before they are writing letters or words. Giving children experience with rhyming words in the
preschool years is an effective first step toward building phonemic awareness. Hearing rhymes, and
then producing rhymes for given words, requires children to focus on the sounds inside words.
Children's phonemic awareness, their understanding that spoken words can be divided into separate
sounds, is one of the best predictors of their success in learning to read.
· Read alphabet books to and with children and make alphabet books together.
· Discuss words and make lists, word banks, or books of words that share interesting spelling/sound
patterns.
· Discuss similar sounds and letter/sound patterns in children's names.
· Emphasize selected letter/sound relationships while writing with, for, or in front of children.
· Encourage children to play with magnetic letters and to explore letter/sound relations.
· Help children write the sounds they hear in words, once they have begun to hear some separate
sounds.
Emergent literacy refers to "the reading and writing behaviors that precede and develop into
conventional literacy. Emergent literacy is concerned with the earliest phases of literacy
development, the period between birth and the time when children read and write conventionally.

Learning A Whole New Language And Culture Halfway Through...
Learning a whole new language and culture halfway through fifth grade was torturous as a child just

behind the other regular English students. However, those frustrations were never conveyed since
communicating with other students, and especially faculty members, seemed even more arduous.
Thus, my vocabulary range is not as wide as most other people that speaks English as their first
language. This can be shown in the first paper I have written titled "Faster or Stronger" for the
course "Eng&101 English Composition I" instructed by Martha J. Nagel. In this paper, there was a
lot of repetition by using the same words multiple times throughout the essay to emphasize the
thesis (Wangadi). This type of repetition can cause readers to become disinterested in the paper
because even though it makes it easier for the reader to understand the argument, the lack of variety
in the choice of words makes the paper seem dull and too predictable. In the most recent paper
however, there were more variety in the vocabulary to still emphasize the thesis as well. Instead of
saying "biggest victims" repeatedly, "main victims" and "leading victims" were used to create a

The Dangers Of Singles Stories
Throughout a lifetime people hear thousands of single stories from people, places, and things. This
makes the passing of information very dangerous. A single story means, a limited viewpoint, or only
seeing something from one angle. As proved in many cases, this is very dangerous in knowing the
whole story from every perspective. In many cases the source you are hearing this from may have
opinions or facts beyond the point adjusting your way of thinking. The dangers of singles stories
was noted by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. She had a first hand experience with this situation. As a
child in Nigeria she was always reading english books. Appropriately, the national language of
Nigeria is english, so it is likely that those were the books available. Later Chimamanda got ahold of
African books and this completely changed her mindset, and realized she was only receiving stories
from english perspective. This was one of her first encounters with single story. Later when she
moved to America for school her she encountered a similar situation but rather someone else
experiencing a single story. In her university Chimamanda had a roommate, this roommate was not
from Nigeria. When Chimamanda was living with her the roommate was very surprised but her

Whole Language versus Phonics Essays
Whole Language versus Phonics
Whole Language versus Phonics has been a question among many top educational groups for years.
Which is the best way to teach kindergarten children the proper way to speak and learn the English
Language? There are many valid reasons why experts argue for both phonics and/or whole
language. Both seem to be exceptional ways to master the English Language. The purpose of this
research paper is to compare phonics versus whole language and to determine how technology can
support each approach.
The history of the use of phonics dates back to the 1700's. Backs then, children were taught to read

In essence, it builds on what they expect them to already know. Part of the whole language doctrine
states that the point of reading is not to read individual words, but to read them in context. The basis
of whole language is the process of predicting the words through their meaning and context. It is not
intended to teach word decoding but rather a "look–say" way to learn. There is no emphasis on
grammar, spelling and punctuation with this form of teaching.
What is Phonics? Phonics is the teaching of the association of sounds with letter identification. With
that, there is an extreme amount of emphasis on word decoding skills to help a student sound out
unfamiliar words. Phonics is actually a word–recognition strategy that becomes a teaching method
only through heavy emphasis. Using phonetic principles, youngsters learn to associate the correct
sound with each part of a word and to recognize and pronounce words. (Farr 2004) Phonics
systematically teaches a child to break the code of written language. (Ghate 2003) Children are
taught to identify letter–sound correspondence with phonics, which helps them put together a word
by using sounds.

Perspective On Reading
The purpose of this chapter is to provide a review of the literature regarding an historical perspective
on reading instruction in schools, and the balanced literacy philosophy. This information provides a
background from which to better understand how the balanced literature approach to reading
instruction has come to exist, and the tasks that are part of this philosophy for the teacher. Then,
more specific information is examined from the Crowley Independent School District regarding how
the balanced literacy framework is implemented within that district. In addition, various curriculum
documents are discussed in order to better understand how the CISD implements its balanced
literacy program. Furthermore, the professional development and support for the reading initiative
that occurs at the district and campus levels is discussed, along with the leadership that is provided
within the schools to help teachers successfully carry out the balanced literacy program.

Traveling Is The World 's Piggy Bank
Traveling Effects
Going to a new place can be scary and exciting, while visiting relatives can be familiar and .
Traveling has many effects overall The point is the sky is the limit; traveling gives personal insight
into the world beyond the bedroom window; it gives us a license to become a citizen of the world.
First, traveling is the world's piggy bank. In the year 2015 a total of 650.8 billion dollars was spent
by domestic and international travelers on leisure ("U.S. Travel Answer Sheet"). For example, the
money spent on those amazing adventures available. Like scuba diving, parasailing, and even trying
new foods. A burger for example will cost more in a different location then it might at home. The
cost of living plays into how much should be saved, depending on the destination. Likewise, the
economy worldwide profits from all the traveling that goes on. The tax revenue for 2015 was 147.9
billion dollars ("U.S. Travel Answer Sheet"). Thus proving traveling is encouraged and a great way
to spend without feeling guilty. Furthermore, it helps build jobs! 15.1 million to be exact in the year
2015 ("U.S. Travel Answer Sheet"). How wonderful it is to be helping the world especially those
third world countries. Tourism is encouraged and it is providing profit for the world instead of just
one country. What a great way to add points to a world citizen license.
Equally, important traveling is life changing. By going outside, the usual area, city, state, country

miner seeps into every part of their life. The personification of the cough sets out to illustrate the
father's illness not as something evil or destructive, but simply as a nuisance. The symbolism of the
Orrery demonstrates how the author views their father's sickness as the core of his world,
responsible for making their lives function. Hume's is able to show an entire family's state and story
in a few paragraphs by using carefully selected words and literary devices to make the reader infer
the information rather than say it explicitly. The personification of the cough shows that it is such a
constant presence in the family's life that it almost acts as a family member. The description of the
cough behaving "like a child" both makes the reader view the cough as a member of the author's
family and implies that the author does not view the cough as necessarily malignant. However, the
cough is a nuisance much like a little kid is a nuisance because it is "always hungry" and
"demand[ed] attention." The cough being "always hungry" makes the reader think of a little kid
wanting food rather than a lung disease that forces the father to constantly cough and the cough
"demand[ing] attention" makes the reader think of a pesky child rather than the constant sounds of
the father coughing. These descriptions fit in with the personification of a child and make the reader
see the cough as more of a helpless thing that needs to be taken care of rather than insidious and
evil. The personification of the cough as a child also acts as if the author sees the cough as a part of
the family, both emphasizing its constant presence and the author's almost benign view of the cough.
The imagery used in "The Cough" illustrates the father's life as a miner. The father is first described
as walking down "Ash Alley," which both makes the reader visualize a gray and dingy alleyway
while also drawing from the same imagery of a

How Important Are Intentions?
Context, in general, is important. Without context, words are twisted, actions are misunderstood, and
insights are lost. However, as individual people, it is harder to determine what context matters. How
important are intentions? How important are motives? From the outside looking in, these internal
concepts may be critical information, but ultimately, intentions and motives will not change the
consequences. In judging yourself, it is the actions that matter. By redefining individuals as self–
contained creations, context narrows to only your own actions, to only the factors you have control
over. It is with this simplified worldview that we can learn to improve ourselves, love ourselves, and
ultimately, live well. In order to recontextualize ourselves, we must first be a completed whole. As
comforting a thought as it is that soulmates exist, that somewhere out there is your other half, this
ideology limits progress. If we are waiting for our missing piece, then we do not have full autonomy
over ourselves; we are dependent on the contributions of another. This wastes precious time and
makes it impossible for critical judgement. A painting is not assessed when it is incomplete; without
the full picture, a canvas is still just cotton, wood, and paint, days away from being declared art. In
the book On the Nature of the Universe, Lucretius describes men as fruitless seekers, traveling the
world for something greater, an imagined happiness, when all he needs is at home, in his

Langston Hughes is an African American poet, he lives in an area where racism is experienced, and

Essay On A Comparison Of The Signalman And The Darkness...

  • 1. Essay on A Comparison of The Signalman and The Darkness... A Comparison of The Signalman and The Darkness Out There 'The Signalman' was set in an era in which Victorian language was still used, meanwhile 'The Darkness Out There' is a more modern age story. 'The Signalman', set 100 years before 'The Darkness Out There' was the story of a troubled man. His troubles are the main reasons for his death. The reader is unaware as to whether or not the Signalman's death was a consequence of his paranoia or a matter of coincidence.' The Darkness Out There' is an example of the cruelty within people, though considered a horror story, the only horror in this story is from the shock of Mrs.Rutter's lack of compassion for the German pilot.'The Signalman' and 'The ... In the beginning of 'The Darkness Out There' the narrator immediately describes the beautiful day in which Sandra was walking through a field on a "bright day". Automatically the story has been set. The use of adjectives to describe the day also added to the height of standard of setting, by describing the bright day so intensely the writer adds suspense and climax. The setting in 'The Darkness Out there' changed from the warmth which was the bright day to the darkness which was 'Packer's End'. The setting in 'The Signalman' doesn't change as much. From the very beginning of the story the story's setting had a daunting sense of unease from the words the narrator uses to describe the cutting. 'The Signalman' was set in a rural lonely area; the narrator instantaneously describes the signalman's post. "His Post was in as solitary and dismal a place as I ever saw." By saying the post was "Dismal" the narrator sets the whole story. The lonesome post was also a very nasty dirty place. The narrator describes it as a "dungeon". The dirtier and haunting the signalman's post got the more the setting and the characters were revealed. The Signal box was the refuge from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Theoretical Perspectives on Reading Instruction Essays Introduction Since the reading movements of the 1980's and 1990's, many different theoretical perspectives on teaching reading have been proposed. This paper will examine and discuss major themes, issues, and influences derived from theoretical perspectives on reading instruction that have been proposed since the 1980's. This paper will also examine four articles related to themes and issues taken from the State University library about reading instruction. The author will relay these articles from the library; to current classroom and personal experiences. Research in Learning Style and Reading: Implications for Instruction The first article that we will examine is by Marie Carbo and entitled, "Research in Learning ... Carbo also brings out that included in the environmental preferences educators should take in account of the classroom's formal (hard chairs, desks, etc) or informal, (sofa, pillows, rugs, etc) design which can affect a students' learning either positively or negatively in the classroom. Perceptual strengths preferences are explained by Carbo as when, "Students learn new material through their strongest modality with reinforcement being provided through the students' second strongest modality" (1984). Carbo believes that reading should be taught to students using a large array of multi–sensory devices that include the use of games, books on tapes, filmstrips, word and letter cards made from sandpaper, beads, etc. Under the perceptual development heading; the article brings out that young children are more tactile/kinesthetic/visual learners and that students at this stage learns best with the use of "holistic" reading instructions. According to Carbo research on comparisons across grade levels students in lower grade levels should have ample opportunities for movement and intake during reading instructions, while older students may prefer to work more independently using newspapers, magazines, trade books, etc. Carbo research of comparisons across achievement levels, also found that students that were poor readers may require clearer directions, immediate feedback, more ... • 3. Descriptive Language In The Contender By Robert Lipsyte "Description begins in the writer's imagination, but should finish in the reader's." –Stephen King. Descriptive language helps to create a picture in the reader's mind. Authors can create descriptive language through narration or dialogue. In the novel The Contender, by Robert Lipsyte, the author uses descriptive language and dialogue to develop the characters and the setting. In The Contender, the author Robert Lipsyte uses descriptive language throughout the whole story. One example of descriptive language in the story is on page 47. It says, "The second sit up was harder than the first, and the third was harder still. But by the fourth sit up his muscles began to get warm, like a car engine heating up on a cold morning.." In the text it says that each sit up was harder than the last but by the last sit up he began to get used to it. This quote shows you what the character, Alfred, is doing and how it felt to do the activity he was doing physically. A second example of descriptive language in the story is on page 54. It says, "Alfred caught his breath. It was huge. It was almost a circle, and the seats rose right up the walls toward a ceiling of cables and beams. In the center of the floor, gleaming white under hundreds of spotlights, was the ring. The ropes were wrapped in velvet." In this quote the author is trying to paint a picture in the reader's mind by using descriptive words like "huge" and "wrapped in velvet" to describe items, objects and the setting that the ... This allows growth for children, youth and families to develop in the right setting and gain strength and resilience. Everyone has a different story and having programs that are specific to one group of people that share something in common gives those in the program the opportunity to develop. The Military Family Resource Centre is a prime example of a program that uses the strength–based approach to help clients where they are in life. This is done by using social location (which is groups people belong to based on their location in society), diversity and social justice within the programs offered. There is always ... My own social location plays into looking into what action could take place to make the centre's a better place for children. My suggestions include having programming for children and youth who are feeling anxious or depressed about their life situation. Military children, youth and families are uniquely different and programming for them need to be sensitive. The Military Family Resource Centre's across Canada create an open and safe place for children, youth, and families, advocates for their needs, in a diverse and unique way. • 5. The Pros And Cons Of Phonics And Whole Language Phonics is the theory of leaning established in the 19th century and states children need to break down the complex skill of reading into smaller components like letters before they move on to larger components like sounds, words, and sentences. The phonetic reading theory teaches children to dissect unfamiliar words into parts and then join the parts together to form words. When children learn the letter–sound relationship, they are provided with a decoding formula they can apply whenever they encounter an unfamiliar word (Curtis, 1997, p. 1). By using both styles, the teacher blends early phonics instructions into the teaching of reading stressing the importance of oral vocabulary, auditory discrimination, phonological awareness, syllable awareness, onset–time awareness and phoneme awareness. (Gordon & Browne, 2014, p. 392) I do not recall the phonics approach to leaning when I was in school; however, I do remember my children learning from this style when they were in school so I would say they were taught both phonics and whole language. My research and the text book supports both teaching styles and I would have to agree from what I have witnessed on my own children and grandchildren, incorporating both styles is the best way to teach language and literacy. So try to imagine having to raise your child in a foreign country where you don't speak the language or understand the culture. Slowly you get to see your child loose their cultural identity and replace it with a different one; one you don't understand. What do you do? Do you watch them go down a path you don't approve, or do you interfere force them to go in the right direction? This difficulty of adapting in a new country is on of the main themes in the short story "where the Gods Fly" written by the Chinese American author Jean Kwok in 2012, where a mother has a hard time watching her daughter adapt into a world, she doesn't understand herself. The mother tells the story as a first person narrator, which means that the whole story is ex– perienced through her eyes, which has a significant effect on the opinion of the reader. She had to grow up quite fast, because she was born into a warzone, which made her very independent and strong at a young age. In our culture, it's unusual to have a friendship with your parents because it should be more of a private relationship. Thankfully, my parents and I had an open relationship about everything and get to express my feelings without having to hide them. For my mother, she witnessed things kids her age should not, she gone through things many did not, and she also suffered a lot of pain and deaths of her loved ones. "I remember being so scared of my mother's corpse, and I had to ask myself why I was scared, the woman lying there is my mother," she said as she was reminiscing about her mother's death. I wondered to myself of how it must have been for her; but she continued on to tell me the story. "A few months later we lost your uncle and we didn't worry because we knew that mom was up there waiting for him, but then we had your oldest brother and he died from an overdose on malaria vaccination when he was only seven months." Hearing her going through that made me feel like I got stabbed in the chest. I just sat there and thought about how empty and lonely she must have felt during those years. • 8. Effects Of Reading Instruction On The Literacy Development... The Effects of Reading Instruction on Students of Low–Socioeconomic Status Amelia K.L. Reynolds Edmond, Oklahoma Abstract This paper explores related research in aspects of language acquisition, specifically, reading instruction and its effect on students who live in low socioeconomic environments. We will review the methods of explicit phonics and whole language to examine what, if any, is the more advantageous method of reading instruction for students who live in poverty. The purpose of this literature review is to investigate the impacts of specific reading instruction on the literacy development of children and how socioeconomics restricts these impacts. The research reviewed was collected from peer review journals using the Central Search feature on the UCO Chambers Library website. The majority of the researcher's findings came from EBSCOhost Education Research Complete and JSTOR: Journal Storage. Given the findings of this literature review, research suggests that explicit phonics instruction, when embedded in a whole language classroom, promotes growth in literacy skills among young children. Research suggests that multisensory phonics, based on Orton–Gillingham Approach, promotes literacy growth for students who are at– risk, however, its impact within a whole language classroom are undetermined. • 9. Essay on Phonics and Whole language methods Phonics and Whole language methods Phonics is a technique that teaches beginning readers to associate a particular sound with each letter of the alphabet or letter combination (Unger, 1996). Students receive explicit instruction in the mechanics of reading before they begin the actual process. Once students know what sounds correspond with each letter or letter combination, they move on to sounding out words. The English language has only about forty–four sounds, so when students begin to read, they move along in strict order so that he or she only sees words whose letter sounds they have already learned (Flesch, 1983). An example from Rudolf Flesch's book Why Johnny Still Can't Read is that students would have learned the sounds ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The other popular technique of reading instruction is whole language, also known as the "look–say" method. It has roots that reach back to the 1920s, when some teachers favored "experience charts" in place of text books (Chall, 1992). Two of whole language instruction's biggest advocates are Ken Goldman and Frank Smith. In the late 1960s, they observed that adults seemed to process written word without recoding it letter by letter, or sound by sound. Based on this, Goodman and Smith claimed that children should learn to read naturally, as they learn to speak, and that breaking words down into sounds was unnecessary (Moats, 2000). The basic focus of whole language learning is less on the rules and repetitions that are prevalent in phonics instruction, and more on the meaning of the text and how it flows. Whole language emphasizes reading for meaning, and uses language in ways that relate to the students lives directly (Curtis, 1997). Sounding out words, as used in phonics, is not used in this type of instruction. Whole language experts advise that "most students will learn to read and write with no explicit instruction in phonics and spelling" (Moats, 2000). Students are encouraged to decode words in context, and they are taught that the answers are not as important as the process (Haring, 1998). First, Moats presents the reader with the background of the phonics instruction versus whole language instruction "reading wars" debate which led many educators to try to synthesize the two different types of language instruction under what she refers to as "balanced literacy". Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Those who oppose phonics also feel that the drills and texts used to teach phonics bore students which just increases to their lack of comprehension. At a certain age, students need to focus more on reading for meaning and enjoyment, but the method of phonics does not focus on incorporating these two areas. However, the second method being discussed in this paper, the whole language approach, focuses much of its attention on making sure the student understands and enjoys what he or she is reading. Whole language instruction occurs when a student acquires language rather than learning it through direct instruction (Brooks 35–36). This method is more child centered than teacher dominated, because the objective is for the student to learn how to read through talking and doing rather than through passive listening. Unlike phonics, whole language uses a variety of ways to give students the opportunity to interact with the text they are reading. Questioning, discussing, problem–solving, listening, writing, drawing, and dramatizing are among the ways students interact with text. Students are also encouraged to implement simple strategies while reading such as: reading the sentence and guessing what word will come next, looking at the picture on the page to help figure out the sentence, and also rereading the sentence for clarification. This method also does a good job in allowing the students to engage in text at their own speed and often in their own ways (36). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As 'The Monkey's Paw' was written in 1902, Jacobs makes the story scary in ways that are very different to modern horror films and books. We can tell that the story was written in the early twentieth century as it contains many details that would have been common in Victorian literature. One of the most obvious features from 'The Monkey's Paw' that tells us that the story was written over a century ago, is the old–fashioned language that Jacobs uses. The main way in which Jacobs uses setting to increase the tension in 'The Monkey's Paw', is the way that he creates contrast between the wild outside weather and the cosy atmosphere inside the Whites' home. At the beginning of the story, Jacobs describes the night as 'cold and wet', whereas Jacobs describes the Whites' home by writing 'the fire burned brightly'. This contrast makes the reader associate the outside with dark, cold and bad while associating the inside with light, warm and good. There is one thing that is keeping the White family safe from the badness of the outside, and that is the blinds. The blinds are drawn in part 1 of 'The Monkey's Paw' when the Whites are a cosy, normal family protected from grief and terror. However, in part 3 of the story when Mrs White is looking for Herbert to come back from the dead, Jacobs writes 'the old woman, with burning eyes, walked to the window and raised the blind'. I think that the blind is a symbol for a barrier that protects the Whites from the danger of the outside and when Mrs White raises the blind to look for her son she lets some of that danger into her home. Also, the visitors bring some of the danger and badness from the outside into the Whites' home when they visit. For example, when the Sergeant–Major visits, he brings the monkey's ... The strong supporters on this side of the debate want phonics taught in an intensive and systematic manner (Strickland, 1998). These phonics supporters criticize whole language, claiming that the approach is too disorganized and phonics taught in such an incidental manner that some children will never have the right tools to learn to read well (Cromwell, 1997). There are many advantages to using phonics. Children who learn to read by using phonics generally have better pronunciation, spelling, and word recognition. They have been given a tool that can be used over and over again while reading and writing, without having to memorize vocabulary and spelling of the words (Curtis, 1997). He developed a curriculum of 72 lessons, outlining over 200 letter–to–letter relationships that represented the fundamental sounds of the English language (DeMoulin et al., 1999, ¶4–5). By the 1960s, phonics had taken on a more positive reputation with the help of Jeanne Chall, author of Learning to Read: The Great Debate. Despite this ideology, phonics remains an easily understood method of instruction. As stated in the previous section, phonics relies upon phonemes or units of speech. Many of today's phonics curricula, like Flesch's approach, include the 200 letter–to–letter relationships that represent these phonemes. Reading has become a very important element in our society. With the rapid advancement of America, having good reading skills is essential to getting ahead in jobs and even in making dinner. Children are the future doctors, lawyers, and presidents of our country and I, as a future teacher, wouldn't want to send children out into the world with poor reading skills. I also think it is important to discuss reading methods because I see, after doing an interview with a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When I decided to use reading as my research topic, I thought I could take on the whole concept of reading, but I soon learned that reading is a complex subject that has many methods. According to the International Reading Association, "A reading method is a set of teaching and learning materials and / or activities often given a label, such as phonics method, literature based method, or language experience method" ("Using Multiple Methods"). This definition shows that many practices for reading can be called reading method. From the aforementioned reading methods definition and from doing a small amount of research, I decided I would narrow the focus of my research paper to the reading methods of whole language and phonics. I chose to focus on the concepts of whole language and phonics because for many years they have been among the most popular reading methods and because of the ongoing debate surrounding which method is better than the other –– a debate which has caused a constant push – pull trend in these methods. For a while it will pull towards whole language, but then the trend switches to focus on phonics (the current trend). After more research on the concepts of whole language and phonics, I came to believe that this debate between methods the debate between whole language and phonics is an artificial dilemma, and isn't really about one method or the other when both methods could be combined. ... Guy Vanderhaegh takes us back a few decades in the retelling of a court case in small town, Saskatchewan in the play, "I Had a Job I liked. Once." Using elements of style, staging and developing characters throughout the play Vanderhaegh portrays to the audience the theme of the biases and prejudices that come with living in a small town. The story is set in small town Saskatchewan in a police station office, on the night of August of 1957. Corporal Heasman has brought in Les Grant on the account of accused rape Tracy Tolbertson, and the play follows the questioning of Sergeant Finestad to Les, who retells his involvement with Tracy, the daughter of Mr. Tolbertson, the local crown attorney. After they've used their teeth. I might have been up to the game–once, but all of a sudden it seems too complicated for rules–for me." This is where the main theme of small town prejudices is revealed, and how there's more to people that what meets the eye. Society judges people based on their first impressions of what they see and what they've heard about them. The question "Who made the tiger?" refers to the events and families in people's past that shape who that young person becomes. Tracy's dad was very strict and hard on her, which makes her rebel, leading her to writing the cruel things about Les on the wall. Les has had to deal with his rough family life growing up which automatically causes people to judge him. Heasman describes them as a "Bad bunch, the Grants." Les has also been bullied for such a long time that it causes him to act out. He is good kid, but all these outside influences came into making him make a bad decision. • 26. The Scarlet Ibis Figurative Language Analysis The way and words used to tell a story determine how the story will be perceived. If the story uses lots of details, diction, and figurative language then it will be most likely a well told story. Although if a story is not told with these things it can be hard to interpret what is trying to be said. In the short story, "The Scarlet Ibis",uses all these things to tell an amazing story with a plot that could go anywhere. The author, James Hurst, of "The Scarlet Ibis" illustrates diction and figurative language to prove that the tone is hope, discouragement, and pride. The author creates a tone of hope when he starts to talk about his memories of Doodle first signs of being normal. According to the text, "Finally one day, after many weeks of ... I did not know then that pride is a wonderful, terrible thing, a seed that bears two vines, life and death."(32). The tone here is shown by a metaphor which describes the different types of pride. This quote proves that he loves having Doodle to have someone to root for, but when he does not succeed there is no pride. This is when there is a quick mood shift for the reader but the figurative language used explains it. According to the author, "'What are you crying for?' asked Daddy, but I couldn't answer. They did not know that I did it for myself, that pride, whose slave I was, spoke to me louder than all their voices, and that Doodle walked only because I was ashamed of having a crippled brother." This quote uses diction like ashamed and slave to show that his brother's accomplishments were all from his own selfish wants. This creates a mood of being upset because while there is pride for Doodle, the brother is being selfish because he wanted a normal brother. Overall, pride can be a uplifting but can also be for someone's own selfish reasons. In the short story, "The Scarlet Ibis" showed that diction and figurative language was used for creating the tone of hope, disappointment, and pride. This story was one with a plot that could have gone anywhere or done anything. This kind of story is the one that needs to be told with good diction and figurative language. In conclusion, this kind of thing creates a great tone that will makes any story an amazing one. The tone is the way the whole story is perceived and what the mood would feel like for the ... • 27. Hansberry Make The Turning Point Of Karl Lindner Explore the ways in which Hansberry makes the first visit of Karl Lindner such an intense scene. Hansberry's play captures how Chicago (and America in general) was around the 1950's; although Chicago claimed to be anti–racist, Hansberry shows what life was like for black families in that day and age. It also has elements from her own life in it, making it a more realistic story. Hansberry used many techniques to create a build–up of tension until Karl Lindner came out with what he had to say, which was racially prejudiced and very discriminatory towards the family. This was the turning point in the play where everything they worked for was starting to go wrong. A way tension was built was by the way in which Lindner was treated in the beginning. ... By this he meant violence directed toward the Black families that moved into white neighbourhoods – this could also be a masked threat towards the family. Afterwards, he tells them that he and his neighbourhood not only 'deplore that kind of thing' but they are trying to do something about it. After he says this it seems as though he is going to say something more pleasant, he has also got the family encouraging him to do so. This increases the tension because it is right before the message is clear, you can see that by the way Lindner is talking, which is clearer and there is no constant manipulation of his word order. He is also gaining confidence to finish up his 'speech.' It is also stated clearly in the stage directions " (more encouraged by such affirmation)." The family at this point is expecting something positive from him, but after he says "Our people out there feel that people get along better, take more of a common interest in the life of the community, when they share a common background." To put it simply, he and his neighbourhood are telling them that they are unwanted just because they do not have a 'common background' by this meaning skin colour. To understand this debate, one must first understand the differences between whole language and phonics learning. The Definition of Phonics Many people are confused by the term phonics, because the term can literally have two meanings. The school systems have had educational backgrounds molded after whole language, and its time for a phonics approach. It is now more crucial than ever for a change in the system. It would be impossible to expect the educational system to completely change the way children are learning to read, but the system must make small, quick changes over a short period of time to encompass the use of the phonics approach. Not all children have the same learning capabilities, and that is one of the main arguments against phonics. Many people in opposition say that not all children can learn from the phonics approach. What people opposed to phonics do not understand is that phonics can be incorporated into the learning process along with whole language to ensure a balance and complete understanding of the English language (Unkown, 1994). With whole language as the basis to the learning process, I believe that the schools are giving out good grade cards to children who are good at guessing and memorizing words. With this in place, parents don't realize that their children are being taught to guess instead of learning to read properly. It seems as though the schools have placed more priority on self–esteem and appraisal than on literacy. It has come to a point where ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Students are expected to be emergent readers by the time he or she leaves kindergarten and enters first grade. If a child is not, he or she is labeled as being behind. According to Hughes (2007) emergent readers are using early reading strategies in consistently, read easy patterned text, retell text with simple storyline, and respond to text at a literal level. Hughes (2007) also says literacy develops in young children through play, daily conversation and interactions with text of all kinds. Many children come with emergent literacy skills; can recognize signs and labels, scribble letters, retell stories by pointing at pictures and talking about them, and some have varying degrees of phonemic and phonological awareness. This essay will define and explain implication for each theory in learning to read. Cueing Systems The cueing system is made up of four cueing systems: Grapho–phonemic, Syntactic, Semantic, and Pragmatic. Each is used in language development and are important for communication. Grapho–phonemic cues are related to the sounds we hear (both individual letters and letter combinations), the letters of the alphabet and the conventions of print (Hughes, The Four Cueing Systems, 2007). Syntactic cueing system is having knowledge about language. The syntactic system provides information about the form and the structure of the language, including whether or not ... Balance Literacy vs. Whole Language Whole language is considered a "top down" approach where the reader constructs a personal meaning for a text based on using their prior knowledge to interpret the meaning of what they are reading. Teachers are expected to provide a literacy rich environment for their students and to combine speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Whole language teachers emphasize the meaning of texts over the sounds of letters, and phonics instruction becomes just one component of the whole language classroom. Problems associated with whole language include a lack of structure that has been traditionally supplied by the scope and sequence, lessons and activities, and extensive graded literature found in basal readers. Children can learn to assemble phonemes into words as well as break words into their phonemes even before they are writing letters or words. Giving children experience with rhyming words in the preschool years is an effective first step toward building phonemic awareness. Hearing rhymes, and then producing rhymes for given words, requires children to focus on the sounds inside words. Children's phonemic awareness, their understanding that spoken words can be divided into separate sounds, is one of the best predictors of their success in learning to read. · Read alphabet books to and with children and make alphabet books together. · Discuss words and make lists, word banks, or books of words that share interesting spelling/sound patterns. · Discuss similar sounds and letter/sound patterns in children's names. · Emphasize selected letter/sound relationships while writing with, for, or in front of children. · Encourage children to play with magnetic letters and to explore letter/sound relations. · Help children write the sounds they hear in words, once they have begun to hear some separate sounds. This can be shown in the first paper I have written titled "Faster or Stronger" for the course "Eng&101 English Composition I" instructed by Martha J. Nagel. In this paper, there was a lot of repetition by using the same words multiple times throughout the essay to emphasize the thesis (Wangadi). This type of repetition can cause readers to become disinterested in the paper because even though it makes it easier for the reader to understand the argument, the lack of variety in the choice of words makes the paper seem dull and too predictable. Both seem to be exceptional ways to master the English Language. The purpose of this research paper is to compare phonics versus whole language and to determine how technology can support each approach. The history of the use of phonics dates back to the 1700's. In essence, it builds on what they expect them to already know. Part of the whole language doctrine states that the point of reading is not to read individual words, but to read them in context. The basis of whole language is the process of predicting the words through their meaning and context. It is not intended to teach word decoding but rather a "look–say" way to learn. There is no emphasis on grammar, spelling and punctuation with this form of teaching. What is Phonics? Phonics is the teaching of the association of sounds with letter identification. With that, there is an extreme amount of emphasis on word decoding skills to help a student sound out unfamiliar words. Phonics is actually a word–recognition strategy that becomes a teaching method only through heavy emphasis. Using phonetic principles, youngsters learn to associate the correct sound with each part of a word and to recognize and pronounce words. (Farr 2004) Phonics systematically teaches a child to break the code of written language. (Ghate 2003) Children are taught to identify letter–sound correspondence with phonics, which helps them put together a word by using sounds. • 37. Figurative Language In Harry Hume's The Cough By Harry Hume The Cough Harry Hume's short story "The Cough" uses figurative language to show that the father works as a miner and as a result is getting sick but cannot stop working as his job is the only thing keeping the family afloat. The diction used in this micro story illustrates how the father's job as a miner seeps into every part of their life. The personification of the cough sets out to illustrate the father's illness not as something evil or destructive, but simply as a nuisance. The symbolism of the Orrery demonstrates how the author views their father's sickness as the core of his world, responsible for making their lives function. Hume's is able to show an entire family's state and story in a few paragraphs by using carefully selected words and literary devices to make the reader infer the information rather than say it explicitly. The personification of the cough shows that it is such a constant presence in the family's life that it almost acts as a family member. The description of the cough behaving "like a child" both makes the reader view the cough as a member of the author's family and implies that the author does not view the cough as necessarily malignant. However, the cough is a nuisance much like a little kid is a nuisance because it is "always hungry" and "demand[ed] attention." The cough being "always hungry" makes the reader think of a little kid wanting food rather than a lung disease that forces the father to constantly cough and the cough "demand[ing] attention" makes the reader think of a pesky child rather than the constant sounds of the father coughing. These descriptions fit in with the personification of a child and make the reader see the cough as more of a helpless thing that needs to be taken care of rather than insidious and evil. The personification of the cough as a child also acts as if the author sees the cough as a part of the family, both emphasizing its constant presence and the author's almost benign view of the cough. The imagery used in "The Cough" illustrates the father's life as a miner. The father is first described as walking down "Ash Alley," which both makes the reader visualize a gray and dingy alleyway while also drawing from the same imagery of a ... However, as individual people, it is harder to determine what context matters. How important are intentions? How important are motives? From the outside looking in, these internal concepts may be critical information, but ultimately, intentions and motives will not change the consequences. In judging yourself, it is the actions that matter. By redefining individuals as self– contained creations, context narrows to only your own actions, to only the factors you have control over. It is with this simplified worldview that we can learn to improve ourselves, love ourselves, and ultimately, live well. In order to recontextualize ourselves, we must first be a completed whole. As comforting a thought as it is that soulmates exist, that somewhere out there is your other half, this ideology limits progress. If we are waiting for our missing piece, then we do not have full autonomy over ourselves; we are dependent on the contributions of another.
