A Brief Note On The American Association Of Orthopedic...
FIC AIMS
Background and problem to be addressed: According to the American Association of Orthopedic
Surgeon s (AAOS), chondrosarcomas are the second leading cause of bone cancers, as well as the
most difficult to treat (1). Currently, the only effective treatment includes chemotherapy and wide
surgical resection of the bone and cartilaginous tissue surrounding the tumor, which is incredibly
invasive and painful for the patient (2). Depending on the location of the tumor, however, surgical
resection might not always be possible. Also, if the margin is not wide, the tumor can recur.
Alternatives to resection include debulking and intralesional surgery, but these are associated with a
recurrence rate of up to 93% (3,4). Therefore, developing a less invasive alternative treatment would
be a significant advancement in quality of life for patients with chondrosarcomas.
Long term goal: The long term goal of this research program is to find effective treatment for
chondrosarcomas. Here, we propose to test whether iron depletion therapy can be used to improve
outcome for patients with chondrosarcoma tumors. A first step toward reaching this initial goal is
to test whether iron deprivation controls tumor cell growth in vitro and in a rat model.
Hypothesis: Our experimental model will utilize chondrosarcoma cell lines that will be studied in
tissue culture and in rats. We hypothesize that chondrosarcoma cancercell lines depleted of serum
iron will exhibit decreased growth and

Descriptive Essay About Beatles
The Band that Paved the Way
If I had to think of one word to describe the Beatles, it would have to be iconic. Their style and
innovation is something that has really stood the test of time and remains unsurpassed. They were
ahead of their time, they were experimental, and their music is timeless. The Fab four s music
speaks to all generations. The variety in which is displayed throughout their albums is what I
admire most about the Beatles. Each record has its own unique sound; there really is a song for
everyone. It is impossible to talk about the progression of music without mentioning the Beatles.
They sit atop The Rolling Stone s 100 Greatest Artist of All Time list, and for good reason. I am

In my opinion, the stars represent all the successes and happiness that love can bring a couple.
However, many relationships go through a lot of struggles that can be seen by the darkness of the
sky. The lyrics are also straightforward and easy to follow. They leave the listener to think about
what they believe is the true meaning of love. Hearing this song will forever remind me of my
parents love for each other and that is something that is special to me.
The way the Beatles wrote their music was interesting. The song itself is in F# minor until the
acoustic guitar solo in the middle of the song by Harrison, which is when it switches over to G
minor (The Beatles Bible). I believe that the solo portion of the song is the best part. This portion
of the song is more like a transitional period, as George Harrison does a good job of using relaxing
tones. Harrison also plays the claves in the background of the song that serve as something
similar to a metronome to keep the rhythm constant in the song. Due to the song s simplicity and
beauty, it is no surprise that the tempo is slower. If the song were any faster, the message would
be more difficult to portray.. It shows that love and happiness does not come very easy and you
must be patient until you are destined with true love. The Beatles did an excellent job of showing
the beauty of love in what I believe to be an effortless way.
The next song I chose is one that I couldn t resist

The And Implementation Of Rapid Response Teams
Much like the human body, healthcare is a complex system that must be assessed and reviewed
routinely to identify the dysfunctions or parts that are in need of intervention. It is the job of
nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals to recognize and communicate when there is a
need for change or improvement in order for patients to receive the highest standard of care and
optimal health outcomes. The creation and implementation of Rapid Response Teams were one of
the many strategies initiated in the 100,000 Lives Campaign (2004) instituted by the Institute of
Healthcare Improvement (IHI) in effort to reduce morbidity and mortality in the United States
health care system. Rapid Response Teams (RRT) are groups of specialized,... Show more content

According to Carlo Parker, the literature suggests that RRT s are underutilized either by delayed
activation or failure to activate entirely. This underutilization is shown to lead to failure to
rescue. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between nurses decision
making model during RRT activation and the frequency of the RRT activation (Parker, 2014).
Lauri and Salantera (2002) have identified three decision making models that are utilized by
nurses to make clinical judgments based off of information processing and intuitive humanistic
theories (Parker, 2014). The first model is the analytical decision making, which involves the
collection of data, forming a hypothesis and continuing to collect data until a decision has been
reached (Parker, 2014). Secondly, the intuitive decision making is understanding without
rationale (Parker, 2014). The third model is a combination of the analytical and intuitive
decision making. The registered nurses (RN) who participated in this study were from an acute
care unit who had activated the RRT at least once in the past 12 months. The RN s were between
the ages of 24 57, 91% were female, 63% of them held a baccalaureate or master s degree in nursing
and the average time working as an RN was 10 years (Parker, 2014). The results of the study

Why Use Bcaaas
Main Reasons to Use BCAA
Making rigid or severe workout is not just doing it alone especially if you want to make it part of
your routine regularly. You need to make sure that you get the right nutrition from the food or
supplements to get the best results from your planned workouts. When you need to do extensive
workouts which are going to wear out your muscles, then you need to take the BCAAs or the
Branched Chain Amino Acids. BCAAs are the essential amino acids that are going to help you out
getting the energy you need after you had your workout.
But what are the main reasons why you need to use BCAAs? First of all, since doing rigid
workouts can make you lose energy and bring stress in your body, using or taking BCAAs is truly
helpful. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is also called protein synthesis wherein new tissues will replace old tissues after the
extensive workout. With the help of the BCAA powder or capsules, your body can keep the
energy going since the old tissues will be replaced for you to get the force that your body always
need.
Prevention of Firm Muscle Loss
When you are already taking the BCAAs, the main thing that it will also do is the prevention of
losing firm muscle. This means that you will get the muscle mass due to the BCAAs nutrients.
The BCAAs are going to be helpful to keep and increase muscle mass to make your body lively.
So what else that the BCAAs are going to do to your body? There are so many uses for it and
many reasons to add BCAAs to your body. There are twenty two regular amino acids and
imagine that the body itself can not supply the three of them. These three are called the BCAAs,
which will be helpful in keeping your muscle lean and strong. When your exercise is so extensive
or severe, you will lose energy, and you may not get the results that you are waiting for. Making
sure that you have the right amount of protein and enough carbohydrates, is making sure as well of
your goal to stay fit and

going to the Dunes since I was a little kid. It s a fun experience and even a learning experience
because there s so much that makes up the dunes. Ever since I was a kid, I d always remember
running up and down the sand dunes along the beach and swimming in Lake Michigan. I m sure
some of you can even relate to this. One of the sand hills I remember running up is Mt. Baldy at

One of the most successful ways that the Ste. Genevieve faculty collaborates together concerns
their method of curriculum development, alignment, and revision. This reflection assignment will
examine the curriculum process of Ste. Genevieve R II. The following items will be addressed

Ste. Genevieve R II has all three forms of curriculum. The formal curriculum is composed of
various documents saved to Google Drive. Information used to achieve this formal curriculum
includes the following documents: the Missouri Learning Standards for the departments, the
Missouri Learning Standards Crosswalk showing standards and alignment, the Missouri Learning
Standards Terminology for various departments, curriculum checklists, information about backward
design, pacing guides, unit/lesson plan documents, and assessments. The informal curriculum is
present at Ste. Genevieve R II, but it is not in documented form. The values of the teachers creating
the curriculum play a role in its development and implementation. Each teacher brings their own
style into the classroom; as a result, the curriculum is followed, but it is followed in different ways
as teachers place their individual teaching style into their instruction. For example, when teaching
skills about literary theme, one teacher might include a specific piece of literature based on student
interest. Another teacher might not include the same piece of literature, but the concept of theme
will still be an aspect of their lessons. Another example might be in regards to teaching other kinds

Literature In Lord Of The Flies And To Kill A Mockingbird
Over the summer I was opened up to a new and adventurous side of literature. From a plane crash
and savagery, to racial issues, to child suffrage it really widened my view on life s hardships.
Reading Ellen Foster, Lord of the Flies, and To Kill a Mockingbird really stretched my
imagination. Each book had there own twists and turns, but I believe they all linked in amazing
ways. One way all three novels connected in my opinion, would be how tenacious kids are when
they have to overcome adversity.
In Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, there is a plane crash which abandones a large amount
of little boys with no adults on an island stranded with no food, water, or shelter easily accessible.
The boys struggle to survive through the whole book and end up turning on each other because of
a disagreement of what is more important, a signal fire or hunting. A quote from this book reads,
Kill the pig! Cut his throat! Kill the pig! Bash him in! (Golding page. 104). This quote displays
what Jack believes is the right path of the boys surviving on the island, hunting. Ralph on the
other hand, had a different approach of obtaining order. This quote explains just that, We ve got to
have rules and obey them. After all, we re not savages. We re English, and the English are best at
everything. (Golding page. 40). All being under sixteen of age they shouldn t have to deal with this
kind of situation. They are obviously not responsible enough to survive on their own being that

The Legacy Of The Civil War
Times of war often debut new technology that shapes the future. Seeing as how the Civil War was
known as the first modern war, it is appropriate to say that much new technological advancement
was made. Behind every piece of new technology or idea, there is a person or team that dedicated
their time to the development. When it comes to the Civil Waraeronautics and much other future
advancement, Thaddeus S. C. Lowe is the man behind it. Lowe was an integral part in the success
of the aeronautics division of the war and paved the way for the world s future success in many
other fields.
Thaddeus Lowe s work was greatly under appreciated. He and other aeronauts proved time and
time again just how useful balloons could be, but, the work of Wise, Lowe, Steiner, and other
aeronauts as observers should have stirred up enthusiasm for balloons as military weapons, but
neither the Army nor the American public properly appreciated the potential of aeronautics
(Scamehorn 9). This never stopped Lowe from pursuing his dream. He fought to make ends meet
by taking odd jobs so he could finance his education in physics and other subjects that would
eventually set him up for his success in aeronautics. Through his persistent work, at thirty years of
age, Thaddeus Lowe had organized an aeronautics corps for the Union Army something that only
a handful of people wanted to see happen at the time (Military Intelligence Corps Hall of Fame).
Having gained the support of a few key figures, Lowe

Similarities Between The Truman Show And Animal Farm
The Truman Show and Animal Farm Essay
What makes a good life for individuals and what constitutes the perfect utopian society? These
are important questions for all humans living in the modern world and the answers to these
questions radically affect the way that we view how power should be used. In George Orwell s
novel Animal Farm, we see that once the animals gain power over the farm they have the good life
and live in a perfect society. In the Truman Show, directed by Peter Weir, we see that Truman doesn
t know that Christof is controlling his life and he is always working towards living what he
thinks is the good life. The good life is determined by having everything perfect. This then
affects what the perfect society would look like because if everyone didn t have very much and
wasn t treated equally the world would be a horrible place. People in power try to create perfect
societies so people can live the good life.
Power and control is the ability to direct or influence the behaviour of others or the course of
events. In The Truman Show, Peter Weir demonstrates that power is corrupt and is a recipe for
disaster. For example Christof stages a storm that supposedly kills Truman s father, making
Truman afraid of water to stop him from leaving Seahaven Island. Mostly brilliant! Truman s
been terrified of the water ever since. Likewise, in Animal Farm, George Orwell exemplifies that
anyone can have power and when they have power they will use it to hurt others. For instance
when Snowball suggests the windmill, Napoleon gets the dogs to chase Snowball away. In
Snowball s absence, Napoleon declares himself the leader. Napoleon is always right. (Page 48)
From then on the Pigs would run the farm. They took the ability to eat whatever and not have any
rules away from the other animals. Both Weir and Orwell suggest that with power and control
someone can overpower everyone else.
The ability for an individual to live a good life is dependent upon the degree of freedom that they
have to choose their own future. In The Truman Show, Peter Weir suggests that without freedom
one cannot be truly happy. Despite having everything, Truman s life in Seahaven is never truly
complete. When Truman sits on the beach in

Imagination And Reality In Ode To A Nightingale
Hi my name is Dheer Bhatia, today I will talk to you about how Keats explores both imagination
and reality in the poem Ode to a Nightingale. This poem is about how Keats escapes reality and
goes to an imaginative world with a nightingale where he hears her songs and lullabies before
inevitably returning to the real world. It s an expression of love, hence the word ode, to the
nightingale and her songs. The creative piece I have chosen is an illusion painting that is painted by
Robert Gonsalves, and it illustrates the separation between imaginationand reality, and its difficulty
in its distinction. Keats uses juxta positioning, imagery, structure and rhetorical questions to explore
the two concepts of imagination and reality.
Discrepancy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the art piece, there is a bed of water underneath the ships and the boat. The fluidity and
movement of the waves are symbolic of the transition between imagination and reality. Keats
desire to escape is shown through the rough brush strokes of the blue waves in the foreground.
This suggests the transition to be difficult and problematic. The colour of the sea, blue, has
connotations of serenity and peace suggesting the fate of Keats once the transition is complete.
Keats longs to escape reality as he describes reality as where men sit and hear each other groan .
This depicts reality to be tedious and dreary, which results in him loathing this concept. The
word groan is an expression that conveys dread and despair, therefore Keats feels this way
towards reality due to its monotonous and depressing characteristics. The action of groaning
portrays an unappealing view of the world that Keats is longing to escape when conversing with
the nightingale. Furthermore, the elongation of the word groan suggests the tedious and tiring
effort to stay within the normal world and emphasises Keats desire to escape from and seek
asylum in the nightingale s world. Keats expresses this through his actions when he goes Away!
Away! , this makes the reader question the society and world they live in, as Keats sole desire is to
escape the very world they stay in now. In

Heroes Are Not Born Heroes
Hero. According to Webster s New World Dictionary, a hero is defined as any person, male or
female, admired for courage, nobility, etc (Webster s New World Dictionary, hero 1 ). Webster s
Pocket Dictionary, comparably, defines a hero as a person of great courage, spirit, etc., especially
one who has undergone great danger or difficulty (Webster s Pocket Dictionary, hero3 ). Heroes are
not born heroes. Yes, everyone is born with the ability to become a hero, but in time, they may
or may not become one. In our society, heroes are greatly acclaimed in the media. Whenever
some person takes a bullet for a loved one or save a child from a burning building, there is a huge
deal made about it, and they become known as heroes. But a person does not have to physically
save someone s life to be a hero. A hero can also be someone who simply stands up for what he or
she believes. Much like Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird, a hero can be someone who
knows what is right and does the right thing, even if he is ridiculed for doing so. Also, whether
or not a person is a hero depends on the perspective of the person. For instance, a little girl may
think her father is the greatest man alive, but her first grade classmate does not think so instead,
she thinks her father is a hero. The daughters of the man who is known for deterring United
Airlines Flight 93 on September 11, 2001 definitely think him a hero, as does his wife and the
public ( Wives of Passengers on Flight 93 ).

The challenge to get out of the box remained the same, but the amount of time to get out of the

behavior. Operant conditioningis learning by consequence. To put it simply, an action which he

repeated. B.F. Skinner introduced a new term into the law of effect known as reinforcement.

Decision Support System
Decision Support Systems December 22, 2014 Decision Support Systems Many businesses are
faced with situations that need critical analysis, compilation of raw data, circulation of precise
documents and effective utilization of computer systems. Frito Lay is an example of a company
who implemented various decision support systems (DSS) into their business model. A DSS is a
highly flexible and interactive IT system that is designed to support decision making when the
problem is not structured. (Haag, Cummins p.162) Managers require information to guide their
organization in the right direction. DSS increases productivity, efficiency, and enhances
understanding of business processes. DSS helped carve their business success,... Show more content

A Graphical Information System is a decision support system designed specifically to analyze
spatial information. (Haag, Cummings. P.166) The graphical data demonstrated by the GIS is used
to analyze roads, sewer systems, paths of hurricanes, free ways, traffic, or any graphical data that
can be statistically represented. Document driven DSS is also dissimilar to the other 3 decision
support systems mentioned earlier. Document Driven DSS is focused on the retrieval and
management of documents. Document driven DSS is targeted at a broad base of user groups, and
the purpose of such a DSS is to explore web pages and locate documents. The user types in key
words and search the DSS for answers, and the DSS gives information that the user has requested.
DSS systems are beyond doubt helpful in assisting management and providing solutions while
confronting complex issues. However, artificial intelligence can be included to enhance DSS
capabilities. An Information Technology department can further expand business brainpower by
means of artificial intelligence (AI) the science of making machines imitate human thinking and
behavior. (Haag, Cummins p.167) The AI systems that are utilized in the business world include
expert systems, neutral networks, genetic algorithms, and intelligent agents. Expert systems are an
excellent source of elucidation. The expert system has the ability to diagnose problems and

The Gorilla Beringei Beringei And Mountain Gorilla
Introduction: The Gorilla beringei beringei or mountain gorilla, was first discovered on October
17th 1902, by a German officer named Captain Robert von Beringe (Berggorilla and Direkthilfe,
2002). Mountain gorillas play a large role in it s particular ecosystem through consumption the
gorillas control and maintain vegetation that is vital for a healthy environment not only for the
primatebut also other species that live in the environment as well. Since the discovery of the
mountain gorillamuch fascination has been drawn toward the species. However, the gentle creature
s population has had a sharp decline from Rwanda s belief in sumu, poaching, human disease, and
unregulated tourism. In efforts to revive the species population from extinction, persistent activism
through worldly foundations are helping protect the mountain gorillaspecies. Von Beringe
discovered the primate on the summits of the Virunga Volcanoes (Berggorilla and Direkthilfe,
2000). The officer described the mountain gorilla as to be a large manlike ape, that was tall in
stature (about 1 1/2 meters tall), and weighed over 200 pounds (Schaller, 2010). The mountain
gorilla physical characteristics from other subspecies of primate differs by: lengthy hair, jaw, and
teeth, as well as shorter arms (http://wwf congobasin.org/, 2010). The mountain gorilla is one of
the most wooly of primates, it has a long thick coat of fur that is necessary for the high cold
altitudes. (Hilyard, 2001). Also, when male

Attachment Theory Essay
Chris Livoti3/5/13
IB Psychology Mrs. Urso John Bowlby is the pioneer of the attachment theory and worked with
children who had been separated from their parents during World War 2. He observed that many
of these children developed emotional problems, and he made the connection that the emotional
problems stemmed from the separation from the mother. Bowlby was born in London to an
upper class family, and would rarely see, and interact with his mother. At the young age of seven
he was sent off to boarding school, which was very common for boys of his social status. He would
later go on to say I wouldn t send a dog away to boarding school at age seven. These circumstances

Finally was mild deprivation which could result in minor problems for the child, but no serious
complications. Bowlby s main theory which he is most well known for is his Attachment Theory.
Bowlby believed that for a strong attachment to be formed there must be proximity maintenance
(the desire to be near the people we are attached to), a safe haven(returning to the attachment figure
for comfort and safety in the face of a fear or threat), a secure base(the attachment figure acts as a
base of security from which the child can explore the surrounding environment),and separation
distress (anxiety that occurs in the absence of the attachment figure). The main points of his
attachment theory were that a child has an innate need to attach to one main attachment
figure(monotropy). Another main point in his theory was that he believed a child should receive
the continuous care of the single most important attachment figure for the first two years of life.
Bowlby used the term maternal deprivation to refer to the failure to develop an attachment, and to
refer to the separation or loss of a mother. To support his hypothesis that the relationship between the
infant and mother in the first five years was crucial to socialization, and the disruption of this
relationship can lead to emotional difficulties, antisocial behavior, and delinquency, he studied forty
four juvenile delinquents in a child guidance clinic. The study was called the forty four thieves

For a linear system, the coherence function is given as
Cxy (пЃ· k ) пЂЅ
Sxy (пЃ· k )
Sxx (пЃ· k ) Syy (пЃ· k )

where Sxy (П‰k) is the input output cross spectrum (i.e., the power spectrum of the cross
correlation between the input and output functions), and Sxx (П‰k) and Syy (П‰k) are the

Malcolm X-The Power Of Language
The Power of Language
If I say that I am currently employed with a major petroleum distribution center, you may think that
I am a highly qualified person making limitless amounts of money. However, I am using the power
of language to merely say that I work at a gas station making minimum wage. Great historical
figures throughout history have used the power of language, the ability to use words to their
advantage, to inspire people to unite under one common cause and to change the world.
Some of the most influential writers are those who appear in Language Awareness. Helen Keller
was unable to hear and unable to see but came through her inabilities and inspired others to succeed.

As she was playing with it her teacher spelled doll in her hand. Helen was intrigued by these
hand movements and then started to repeat them. By doing this she learned her first word. She
became such an inspiration to so many people because she had such an impossible handicap to
overcome. Many people with disabilities still look up to her because she used language to tell her
story. She has changed millions of lives because of her power of language.
Malcolm X had the authority over the power of language. He writes, Many who hear me today
somewhere in person, or those who read something I said, will think I went to school far beyond
the eighth grade. The reason that Malcolm X was capable to get so many believers to follow his
convictions was because he knew how to command rhetoric. The impressions people got from
him were due entirely to his studies of the dictionary while he was in prison. As he wrote his
first letters to the Mayor of Boston, to the Governor of Massachusetts, and to Harry S. Truman,
he realized that he could not get his thoughts onto his letters. He didn t have the vocabulary he
needed to write the letter appropriately. He saw that the best thing he could do was to get a hold
of a dictionary, to study and learn a wider range of vocabulary. He began by copying a single page,
which eventually led to a replica of the complete dictionary. He now had a vocabulary that permitted
him to get his entire thoughts onto his

some of the participants when they started to feel bad after professor Jane Elliot was saying to
them. At one point in the film the participants actually believed that they were wordless and
stupid and that s where the thoughts shifted. The resistances of the adult participants happened
because they did not want to believe that were bad and racisms. Personally, I was expecting that
reaction from them since we tend to see ourselves most of the time as good people and not as
bad people. I believe that they struggle with complying with the rules/expectations because it is
something new for them. As society, when we experience something new we tend to have
difficulties adjusting to it and that s what I believed happened to the participants in this
experiment. The division between whites and blacks in the film was not enough since we are
living in this country where we have not only white and black people anymore. In the United
States we are blessed to be able to have a very diverse country, since we have people from different
nationality, religions and cultures. I would have rather see a more diverse group of people in this

Causes Of Animal Mummification
Mummies, labyrinthine like tombs of past kings, and a plethora of anthropomorphic animal gods
remain the most prominent and iconic images of ancient Egypt in many people s minds even in the
present day. Those common images have shaped the idea that ancient Egypt was obsessed with
death. A mindset like that is understandable due to the high amount of gods the ancient Egyptians
had dedicated to death and the afterlife#. However, the ancient Egyptians did not worship death.
They merely required more odd sounding traditions to be followed due to their religion. For
example, burying their personal belongings including food and pets, or more iconic, the
preservation of bodies by mummification if possible. Perhaps explaining the method and various
reasons for mummification and other topics surrounding it will show that the ancient Egyptians
were not a civilization that worshiped death, and that they simply followed these in some ways
strange religious traditions in an attempt to rest in peace. There is one type of mummification that
most people may not know about. That type is animal mummification#. There are multiple reasons
ancient Egyptians mummified animals. Some Egyptians wanted their pets to be buried with them,
that meant mummification if they could afford it. The other main reason for animal mummification
is for offerings to the different gods in the Egyptian pantheon. When an Egyptian offered a
mummified animal to a god, the idea was that the creature would go and

Anterior Cruciatetric Analysis Essay
Each year people suffer from one of the most common knee injuries, a torn anterior cruciate
ligament (ACL). The ACL is one of the four ligaments that aid in stabilization and function of the
entire knee. From a sports injury to a fall, an ACL may occur for numerous reasons. Receiving an
accurate diagnosis from the area s best orthopedic surgeon will help in determine if surgery for
ACL tear is necessary.
Symptoms
The most efficient indicator of a torn ACL is pain. The pain sets in almost immediately. During the
incident leading up to the ACL tear, a loud popping noise may occur. The noise may be so loud
bystanders can hear the sound. The noise is actually the ligament tearing which is the reason for the

The various procedures and tests will help determine if the ACL is torn. In some cases, the
orthopedic surgeon may begin with simple non surgical methods including applying ice packs,
taking pain medication or minimizing movement of the knee.
The non surgical approach can help reduce swelling and relieve pain. The non surgical methods
help in preparing for surgery for ACL tear. The wait period allows for reduced swelling and the
elimination of bleeding in the torn ACL. The surgery for ACL tear is used to provide an optimal
outcome returning the individual back to a normal, healthy lifestyle.
Rehabilitation Recovery
The rehabilitation and recovery process will vary with each individual. In some more severe
cases, full recovery from surgery for ACL tear may take over nine months. The best orthopedic
surgeon will work to achieve an optimal outcome for the patient on an individualized basis.
The rehabilitation and physical therapy will help increase the range of motion in the knee area to
help return the patient back to a normal lifestyle. Strengthening exercises are often used to achieve
this goal. During this time after the surgery for ACL tear, a protective knee brace may be
prescribed to help reduce the stress on the injured

Ethical Theory Of Utilitarianism
In this essay, I will attempt to explore the ethical theory of Utilitarianism and the impression it has
left on me. The Utilitarian theory suggests that it is morally right to seek the greatest good for the
greatest number of people. The morally right act is the act which results in the most happiness for
the people of this world. Nature has placed mankind under the governance of two sovereign
masters, pain and pleasure. It is for them alone to point out what we ought to do. (Bentham quoted
in DupreМЃ, 2013:49)Every person s individual actions must be done with the view that their
actions will in turn result in greater happiness, not just their own personal happiness but that of
every person affected. The ethical theory of utilitarianismwas developed by Jeremy Benthamand
John Stuart Mill, who both practiced philosophy and economics. Utilitarianism at first glance seems
to have many positives and upsides, but unfortunately no system is perfect, so it... Show more

I am left asking myself many questions. For example, does the end result always justify the
means by which it is achieved, even if harm is still put upon some people, they may not be the
majority but they are still human beings with feelings and emotion. And how can happiness be
measured accurately? The theory of utilitarianism is based on the idea that the action or choice
that results in the greater good should be carried out. But what is good? How can you measure
and compare the goodness of separate actions? Every individual will have a different perception
on what good is depending on how it will impact on their own personal lives. All our decisions are
subjective, made in our own minds influenced by our own personal feelings and emotions. This

A Reflection On The Bereavement Period
Death may be seen as one s final journey in life. As defined by the Merriam Webster Dictionary
(n.d.), death is the permanent cessation of all vital organ systems, specifically the circulatory and
respiratory systems. Throughout the dying process, nurses play a vital role in caring for both the
patient as well as their family. In order to properly and effectively care for the dying patient and
their family, the nurse must first examine their beliefs and feelings regarding death and the dying
process. It is important to have a deep understanding that while all people may experience grief
with the loss of a loved one, how that grief is expressed may be influenced by many different
factors. This paper will define and explain the bereavement period, the nurse s role in
disenfranchised grief, as well as the four tasks of mourning.
Bereavement Period The bereavement period is the public or external display of mourning
following the death of a loved one. Bereavement is a vital, yet often overlooked, area of care.
Cooley (1992) proves that the earlier interventions are started, negative outcomes of grief are
minimized. The bereavement period is often an unpredictable and complex style of care that
requires continuous adjustment for the nurse (Johnson, 2015). When experiencing bereavement, it
can be seen as one trying to adjust to the loss of a loved one (Cooley, 1992). The length of the
bereavement period often depends on several factors such as the age at the time of loss, the

The Spiral Road Summary
The Spiral Road is a perceptive series bringing together the humanistic view of the rise of the
People Republic of China. Usually history is dictated, but Huang s ethnographic work is not just
another text of narration. Huang makes the readers know history should be concerned with the
people involved, as much as it looks at the overarching politics. The book can be considered a
series of stories that staunchly describes the continuing revolution innate to the countryside of the
PRC by this time in the late 1990 s. Huang s relationship with Ye, the local party leader, and both
of their spirit in storytelling, one for work and another for self gratification, provides the book
with an appropriate framework. Huang immerses himself in a culture that is isolated, but it is
slowly opening up to the rest of the world. As a scholar his work is remarkable in bringing light to
the peasantry, who feed the development of Chinafrom bottom up. However, Huang s adaptation

wanted by the nationalist government. However, in the midst of the book foreseeing the Cultural

Comparing Madonna And Child On The Crescent Moon
Throughout history, there has been consistent production of images of the Virgin Mary, often with
or holding the baby Jesus. Though the subject matter has remained the same, the methods and
techniques of these depictions have been subject to change. Sculptures of the Renaissance featured
similar structural and visual elements, even when created in different countries, several years apart.
When Virgin and Child, a French sculpture from the 1300 s, is compared to Madonna and Child on
the Crescent Moon, a German sculpture from the 1500 s, techniques and elements typical of the
Renaissanceare found in both. Virgin and Child, from the abbey church of Saint Denis, is a French

The majority of similarities are found in their visual and formal structure due to the sculptures
shared time period of the Renaissance. Virgin and Child and Madonna and Child on the Crescent
Moon are both representational and realistic, but neither of their realism goes far enough to
become naturalism. The use of the s curve and the great attention that was given to crafting the
small details in the folds of the fabric of both sculptures is greatly indicative of the influence of the
Renaissance. The content and pose of the sculptures also share similarities. The most obvious lies in
the subjects of the sculpture: Mary holding the baby Jesus. In both sculptures, Jesus caresses his
mother s face. This act humanizes Mary and her child, and creates an emotional expression that
was unusual for religious sculptures created before that time. Though the objects depicted are not
the same, the sculptures include an additional element that is full of symbolism: the fleur de lys
and a crescent moon. The cultural and historical contexts of these pieces are where the differences
between the two returns. Virgin and Child was a religious sculpture intended for a religious space,
and served an additional purpose as a reliquary. Madonna and the Child on the Crescent Moon

Columbian Exchange Research Paper
When the New World was discovered in 1492, European history would soon become shaped by
what is now known as the Columbian Exchange. The Columbian Exchange is defined as a period

played an important role in the economic continuities and changes that occurred in the Atlantic

Encomienda was a labor system created by the Spanish to gain access to resources, such as gold,
that was available in the Americas. Native people were forced to work for landowners in
exchange for food and shelter. Another economic change was the discovery of silver. The
discovery of silver in Mexico and Peru increased the wealth of Spain. Silver mining became more
profitable to the point where cities were prosperous because of them being the center of this
industry. This change ties in with the change in coercive labor because in order for this industry to
boom,
Spanish prospectors would need labor. In Peru, the Spanish changed the traditional labor system
into a coerced labor system where villages were forced to send a good amount of their men into
the mines to do dangerous work in exchange for a low wage. New labor systems and silver allowed
for the Spanish economy to strengthen.
The Americas produced many native crops such as potatoes, tomatoes, beans, etc. Europeans
brought these crops and others back to their countries where people began to grow them. Potatoes,

Marketing Theories Applied, And Calculations Essay
Marketing Theories Applied, and Calculations Return on Investment with Social Media
Marketing While these mobile opportunities were enticing, Ms. Bornstein still had to make a
business case to Suliteanu. It would be necessary to define key metrics to measure the success
of social media, video, and mobile for 2011 and beyond, as part of her long term strategy for
Sephora s online media spending. To measure its return on investment, Ms. Bornstein reviewed a
Third Party Social Media Evaluation Framework (Ofek Wagonfield, 2012, Exhibit 14). Using
this framework, Ms. Bornstein could measure the current investments Sephora was making in
its social media and make three key arguments in her proposal. First, Sephora successfully
generated a wide range of interactions with its social media (See Appendix, Exhibit 1).
According to the third party, consumers could be sorted into three categories based on their
levels of engagement: Advocates, Followers, and Searchers. Using a conversion rate, Sephora
can see clearly that its social media participants turned into buyers. Ms. Bornstein must direct her
attention to these metrics as they provide the most straight forward return on investment
numbers for Sephora s social media outlet. Second, Ms. Bornstein already knows the value of its
Facebook followers. Sephora entered the Facebook scene in 2008 by creating a Facebook Fan

Usefulness and Reliability of Information Provided By...
An ongoing concern in financial reporting is the usefulness and reliability of information provided
by corporations. The financial accounting standard board defines usefulness as the information that
is useful for the users in decision making (FASB, 2011). Reliability is inferred when the information
is verified, objective, and can be relied on. Therefore, Statement of Financial Accounting Standards
No. 157 standardizes the valuationand disclosure of fair valuefor assets and liabilities in order to
achieve both usefulness and reliability. The reasoning for the hierarchy was due to the
inconsistency in previous definitions and guidance (FASB, 1992).
Introduction to Fair Value Hierarchy
To begin, SFAS defines fair value as the value... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
SFAS Relating to the Conceptual Framework
The framework for measuring fair value is easy to understand and follow, and relates to the
conceptual framework. As stated earlier the preferred measure of fair value is the market
approach, because the prices are observable. For this reason the standard recognizes the need for
relevant, reliable, and comparable information in order for users to make better decisions about the
current financial position of a company. Financial readers are aware of the valuing measurement
used to calculate the fair value, whether the measurement were derived from an observable or
unobservable input. The measurement establishes the existence of reliable and relevance
qualitative factors that make accounting information useful for decision making (Barbera, 2007).
If it were observable then the value derived can be researched and verified. However, if it were
unobservable then the user must read the disclosures which will be discussed later in the research
paper, and determine the reliability of the internally generated measurement. In return it can be
understood that the level 1 inputs are more reliable and relevant than the other two levels.
In addition, the fair value hierarchy also enhances the comparability and consistency of information
among companies due to following practices: all companies must

Cuneiform Vs Hieroglyphics
Cuneiform and hieroglyphics were both writing systems that emerged at the dawn of humanity, but
their legacy and impact were vastly different. The two systems not only demonstrate the early
concept of writing but show contrasting elements of civilization in globalism vs nationalism,
internal vs external, connection vs isolation. The two systems certainly diverged from one another,
but to understand this, the origins of the two writingsystems must be examined. Around the dawn of
civilization, in the last half of the third millennium, abstract symbols (meaning letters, numbers, and
other things that represent abstract thought) started to form from proto writing that had been

But it is undeniable that hieroglyphics had more influence on history than cuneiform did, in spite of
the fact that cuneiform was more advanced for its time. This is the first way that these systems
contrast; sophistication. Cuneiform was a more advanced system than hieroglyphics simply
because cuneiform was more abstract and it was far quicker to write Sumerian with it.
Hieroglyphics was, for much of its existence, a logographic system, making it in some ways closer
to drawing than to abstract writing such as cuneiform. However, in the Neolithic times,
sophistication had an inverse relationship with influence, that is to say, that less advanced writing
systems had more influence and clout with other cultures. This may have been because it is hard to
teach an illiterate culture who may adopt a writing system, a complex, writing scheme, or a system
that doesn t work in their language. Or, it may because the more advanced a writing system is, the
fewer people in your culture understand how to use it. This can be seen with cuneiform and
hieroglyphics in a very stark way. Not many cultures used cuneiform, and when they did it worked
poorly with the language it was being used in, while hieroglyphs informed many other writing
systems, such as Hebrew, Greek, and Phoenician; it cannot be understated the

What Are The Characteristics Of A Hero InThe Brothers...
The lesson that I choose to rewrite is lesson two when we discussed The Brothers Grimm and the
German Fairy Tale. In question two you asked what are the characteristics of a hero in these
stories and I feel like I didn t actually use the reading to support how I felt when answering the
question. I think that adventurous, strong and brave are characteristics of a hero in these
stories. In each story there is a fight for what an individual wants or needs and nothing stops
them. Rapunzel wants her prince and the enchantress sends her to a dessert with her twins alone
and while blind the prince finds his family and they live happily ever after. In Rumpelstilzchen
the young girl said she would promise this little man her first born if she became queen and
when the time came she had three day to think of his name and with many days help from
messenger she got his name and was able to keep her first born. These two stories alone show the
adventure, bravery and strength of never giving up and getting what they want no matter what.
These are characteristics in each story just told differently. 2. Why is one story s kind of violence
inappropriate while another s violence is accepted almost without notice? Is there ever a place for
violence in works of literature for children? Violence is seen in many different ways when reading
literature. You have to keep into consideration the way it happens, who it hurts, and the lessons you
learn from it. Children in the 21st century are

The History Of Rock And Roll Music
In the following decade of the 1960s Rock n Roll music became more accepted and began to
evolve from the Rockabilly sound audiences have grown to know before to a freer sound.
However, the 1960s was also the time of the infamous saying Sex, Drugs, and Rock n Roll
became the reality of the newly found style of music. Rock music found its self in its own
category and dominated in the popular music scene and with that many new styles of rock
emerged. Such as: surf, psychedelic, hard rock, and protest just to name a few. These categories of
rock came from experimenting and they have their own distinct sound. For example, Surf Rock
began in Southern California, it was mainly popular dance music that was mostly instrumental from

Compare And Contrast Jim Hawkins And Treasure Island
Finding money in an unexpected place always brings happiness to the finder; whether it is
money or treasure, everyone strives to get it. In the novel, Treasure Island by Robert L.
Stevenson, an old sea caption dies and Jim Hawkins discovers the captain s chest full of valuable
items, such as a treasure map. Upon finding the map, Jim Hawkins goes on an adventure to find
the treasure. In another novel, Kidnapped, also by Robert L. Stevenson, David Balfour has
returned to his hometown to obtain his father s inheritance, however, David s greedy uncle gets
him kidnapped. David goes on a journey to get back his inheritance from his evil uncle. In the
novels, the protagonists, Jim Hawkins and David Balfour, share similarities and differences. They
start their journey in different circumstances, but they are also similar because they share a theme
of coming of age. Lastly, both protagonists deal with men who try to kill them while on journey....

When David is taken as a prisoner, he meets a new friend, Alan Breck and together, they go
through a journey to help David get his inheritance back. Alan seems to be the young man who
does not care about the outcome, but focuses on what has to be defeated. David observed the
way Alan was after the battle, his sword was running blood to the hilt, and himself so swelled
with triumph and fallen into so fine an attitude (Stevenson 59). Because of Alan s company, David
seems to have obtained victory in his first battle. David changes because of his friend, although he
sometimes questions Alan because he is a Jacobite outlaw. Similarly in Jim s case, he meets an
elder friend, Long John Silver who is a pirate and helps Jim along his treasure hunt. Silver and Jim
share a special bond of friendship. As being a pirate, Silver helps Jim in finding the treasure and
keeping him safe from other greedy

Frankenstein Vaccinating Children Research Paper
In the novel, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, Victor Frankenstein takes science a step too far. By
learning the secrets of heaven and earth, Victor brings a monster of his own creation to life and
dooms himself and the human race (Shelley 23). The abhorred monster kills many of Victor s
friends and family and has the opposite effect of a vaccine (Shelley 81). Creating Victor s fiend
was superfluous, but the creation and use of vaccines are not, as they save many people from
dying of preventable diseases each year. Due to the unlikely risk that comes with a vaccine, many
parents have tried to excuse their child from getting them. There is nothing to decide about children
getting vaccinated, as all children should receive mandated vaccinations... Show more content on

As many are aware, the measles was a huge threat to children before people developed a
successful vaccine for this disease. Before vaccines, an average of 500,000 annual cases of the
measles got reported each year in the United States; since 2000, when vaccines became popular,
there have been about 62 cases per year (Omer). As one can see, the amount of cases of the
measles decreased since the measles vaccine. This data shows how vaccinating children
decreases the chances of contracting a dangerous disease like the measles. Many people in
countries like the United States take vaccines for granted and do not appreciate the benefits that
come with their country wide, mandated use. Similarly, each year about three million children
die each year from vaccine preventable diseases, therefore the vaccines that people would love
to have access to could be going to children in need (Greenwood). In less developed countries,
people are lucky to get vaccinated for common diseases, and jump at the opportunity to get a
vaccine. Due to the many who die because vaccines are not available, people need to accept the
vaccines are a luxury. Vaccines are safe to give to children and prevent children from becoming
part of the one in three million who die because they did not get

Courage In Finding Forrester
Having courage to accomplish a new task may not only be extremely difficult for most, but also
harder for one to apply that courage to go out of their way to an unfamiliar place. In the movie
Finding Forrester, both of the main characters, Forrester and Jamal, portray the idea of courage
throughout the entire movie. Finding Forrester is a classic movie about a forgotten author,
Forrester, and a teenager, Jamal, with a hidden dream. Jamal and Forrester create a special bond
between the two of them through their love of writing. This bond between the two allows for
each of them to gain courage. Through this courage, Jamal is able to share his dream with his
peers and Forrester is able to overcome his fear to help Jamal with a conflict with his... Show more

Since Forrester gained a new sense of courage from his friendship with Jamal, it enables him to
go to professor Crawfords classroom and to stand up for Jamal. Jamal is accused of plagiarizing
a paper that he wrote for Crawford s class, but the catch behind is that the beginning of the paper
is actually Forrester s work. This accusation on Jamal creates a new conflict not only for Jamal,
but also for Forrester. Jamals conflict is to either break his promise with Forrester or risk being
accused of cheating. For Forrester, his obstacle is to either overcome his fear or let Jamal suffer
from his mistake. Forrester builds up his courage and goes to read one of Jamal s writings to the
class, and prove that he did not actually plagiarize. Since Forrester secluded himself from all of
society because of his self guilt, it takes a tremendous amount of courage to go out into an
unfamiliar place, especially to a classroom with a professor who attempted to tear him down by
criticizing Forrester.Movielocity (2000) stated, It comes down to a moment of truth for both
men; for Jamal, a choice between following his dream or betraying a friend, and for Forrester, a
decision to remain closed off or to look at the world through new eyes (p.3). Here, movielocity is
saying that because this conflict occurred, it gave both of the men another conflict within
themselves. For Forrester, it was to either remain secluded or to see the world through new eyes
and to help his friend. Since Forrester gained confidence from Jamal, it helped him to make the
right decision with his inner conflict and go to Crawfords classroom and see the world through
fresh eyes. Jamal also portrays courage when he transfers to a new private school. Jamals
previous school is a normal public school while this new private school is prestigious. Since this
is a big change in atmosphere, courage plays a key role in helping Jamal make the transfer from
one school to

Clinical Decision Support System ( Cdss ) Essay
Background Information Clinical decision support system (CDSS) is gaining increased
recognition in healthcare organizations. This is due to an increasing recognition that a stronger
CDSS is crucial to achieve a high quality of patients care and safety1,2. CDSS is a class of
computerized information system that supports decision making activities2. It uses patient data to
provide tailored patient assessments and evidence based treatment recommendations for
healthcare providers to consider2,3 . Patient data can be input by digital entry, queried from other
clinical information systems or transmitted from medical devices. Patient data are compared
against a knowledge base and made sense of by an inference mechanism. The knowledge base can
be procured commercially or developed in house. The inference mechanism can be highly variable
in sophistication ranging from a simple yes no and if then statement to Bayesian prediction
techniques and/or fuzzy logic. The output can also take a number of forms and can be delivered to
a number of destinations at any time before, during or post interaction with the patient4. CDS is
most effective when provided at the time that the physician is formulating her assessment of the
patient s condition and is making ordering decisions2. CDS encompasses a variety of tools to
enhance decision making in the clinical workflow. These tools include computerized alerts and
reminders to care providers and patients; clinical guidelines;

Tragedy Of Julius Caesar And Young Joey From The Old West
When a story ends, and the book is closed, most deem the book over and the characters satisfied.
But the characters in the book still have a story to tell. I myself, Caesar Augustus, from The
Tragedy of Julius Caesar and Young Joey from The Old West have come today to the Literary
Limbo Lounge to talk amongst ourselves and to get to know each other.
I pompously walk into the Lounge with a determination to meet someone new and to show them
how much power and respect the people from my story have given me, before I was murdered
anyway. I look across the room, but only to find one small boy sitting at a table with a small bb
gun in his arm, shooting at the wall with the most obnoxious noises that could come out of any
human being. As I get closer to him, he quickly turns around and shoots me straight in the face,

My Experience At The Big City Of Jacksonville
When I first moved to the big city of Jacksonville, I was cultured shocked. Being born and raised
in a small town where everyone knew everyone, elderly people made up the majority of the
population, and being a liberal could get a brawl going, the new diversity astounded me. Growing
up in my southern town, I was not forced to have specific ideals, but the culturecertainly affected
them. My town has made me who I am today and I question if being raised so conservative has
held me back and if the culturein my hometownneeds to be more modernized. Not being adjusted to
individuality, the culture of the town, and the towns traditional views, are all experiences that have
impacted me to understanding where I came from has affected my social identity.
From a young age, I have always acknowledged that when I went to a tourist area, there was so
much individuality, that I could not fully grasp. When I would go to Walt Disney World, I
would see for one moment a couple of teens with rainbow colored hair and then I would turn my
head to see an Amish family. I always found it astonishing, because where I came from everyone
was basically the same. Of course, there was always a few that did break away from the norm
that my county had, but they stuck out like a sore thumb. These were the type of people that were
either very rich or gothic in style. I don t recall them being bullied, but they were noticed and
sometimes gossiped about, because they were not the same. As it goes, no one

  • 2. A Brief Note On The American Association Of Orthopedic... FIC AIMS Background and problem to be addressed: According to the American Association of Orthopedic Surgeon s (AAOS), chondrosarcomas are the second leading cause of bone cancers, as well as the most difficult to treat (1). Currently, the only effective treatment includes chemotherapy and wide surgical resection of the bone and cartilaginous tissue surrounding the tumor, which is incredibly invasive and painful for the patient (2). Depending on the location of the tumor, however, surgical resection might not always be possible. Also, if the margin is not wide, the tumor can recur. Alternatives to resection include debulking and intralesional surgery, but these are associated with a recurrence rate of up to 93% (3,4). Therefore, developing a less invasive alternative treatment would be a significant advancement in quality of life for patients with chondrosarcomas. Long term goal: The long term goal of this research program is to find effective treatment for chondrosarcomas. Here, we propose to test whether iron depletion therapy can be used to improve outcome for patients with chondrosarcoma tumors. A first step toward reaching this initial goal is to test whether iron deprivation controls tumor cell growth in vitro and in a rat model. Hypothesis: Our experimental model will utilize chondrosarcoma cell lines that will be studied in tissue culture and in rats. We hypothesize that chondrosarcoma cancercell lines depleted of serum iron will exhibit decreased growth and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Descriptive Essay About Beatles The Band that Paved the Way If I had to think of one word to describe the Beatles, it would have to be iconic. Their style and innovation is something that has really stood the test of time and remains unsurpassed. They were ahead of their time, they were experimental, and their music is timeless. The Fab four s music speaks to all generations. The variety in which is displayed throughout their albums is what I admire most about the Beatles. Each record has its own unique sound; there really is a song for everyone. It is impossible to talk about the progression of music without mentioning the Beatles. In my opinion, the stars represent all the successes and happiness that love can bring a couple. However, many relationships go through a lot of struggles that can be seen by the darkness of the sky. The lyrics are also straightforward and easy to follow. They leave the listener to think about what they believe is the true meaning of love. Hearing this song will forever remind me of my parents love for each other and that is something that is special to me. The way the Beatles wrote their music was interesting. The song itself is in F# minor until the acoustic guitar solo in the middle of the song by Harrison, which is when it switches over to G minor (The Beatles Bible). I believe that the solo portion of the song is the best part. This portion of the song is more like a transitional period, as George Harrison does a good job of using relaxing tones. Harrison also plays the claves in the background of the song that serve as something similar to a metronome to keep the rhythm constant in the song. Due to the song s simplicity and beauty, it is no surprise that the tempo is slower. If the song were any faster, the message would be more difficult to portray.. It shows that love and happiness does not come very easy and you must be patient until you are destined with true love. The Beatles did an excellent job of showing the beauty of love in what I believe to be an effortless way. The next song I chose is one that I couldn t resist ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. The And Implementation Of Rapid Response Teams Much like the human body, healthcare is a complex system that must be assessed and reviewed routinely to identify the dysfunctions or parts that are in need of intervention. It is the job of nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals to recognize and communicate when there is a need for change or improvement in order for patients to receive the highest standard of care and optimal health outcomes. The creation and implementation of Rapid Response Teams were one of the many strategies initiated in the 100,000 Lives Campaign (2004) instituted by the Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI) in effort to reduce morbidity and mortality in the United States health care system. Rapid Response Teams (RRT) are groups of specialized,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Carlo Parker, the literature suggests that RRT s are underutilized either by delayed activation or failure to activate entirely. This underutilization is shown to lead to failure to rescue. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between nurses decision making model during RRT activation and the frequency of the RRT activation (Parker, 2014). Lauri and Salantera (2002) have identified three decision making models that are utilized by nurses to make clinical judgments based off of information processing and intuitive humanistic theories (Parker, 2014). The first model is the analytical decision making, which involves the collection of data, forming a hypothesis and continuing to collect data until a decision has been reached (Parker, 2014). Secondly, the intuitive decision making is understanding without rationale (Parker, 2014). The third model is a combination of the analytical and intuitive decision making. The registered nurses (RN) who participated in this study were from an acute care unit who had activated the RRT at least once in the past 12 months. The RN s were between the ages of 24 57, 91% were female, 63% of them held a baccalaureate or master s degree in nursing and the average time working as an RN was 10 years (Parker, 2014). • 11. Literature In Lord Of The Flies And To Kill A Mockingbird Over the summer I was opened up to a new and adventurous side of literature. From a plane crash and savagery, to racial issues, to child suffrage it really widened my view on life s hardships. Reading Ellen Foster, Lord of the Flies, and To Kill a Mockingbird really stretched my imagination. Each book had there own twists and turns, but I believe they all linked in amazing ways. One way all three novels connected in my opinion, would be how tenacious kids are when they have to overcome adversity. In Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, there is a plane crash which abandones a large amount of little boys with no adults on an island stranded with no food, water, or shelter easily accessible. The boys struggle to survive through the whole book and end up turning on each other because of a disagreement of what is more important, a signal fire or hunting. A quote from this book reads, Kill the pig! Cut his throat! Kill the pig! Bash him in! (Golding page. 104). This quote displays what Jack believes is the right path of the boys surviving on the island, hunting. Ralph on the other hand, had a different approach of obtaining order. This quote explains just that, We ve got to have rules and obey them. After all, we re not savages. We re English, and the English are best at everything. (Golding page. 40). All being under sixteen of age they shouldn t have to deal with this kind of situation. They are obviously not responsible enough to survive on their own being that ... Seeing as how the Civil War was known as the first modern war, it is appropriate to say that much new technological advancement was made. Behind every piece of new technology or idea, there is a person or team that dedicated their time to the development. When it comes to the Civil Waraeronautics and much other future advancement, Thaddeus S. C. Lowe is the man behind it. Lowe was an integral part in the success of the aeronautics division of the war and paved the way for the world s future success in many other fields. Thaddeus Lowe s work was greatly under appreciated. He and other aeronauts proved time and time again just how useful balloons could be, but, the work of Wise, Lowe, Steiner, and other aeronauts as observers should have stirred up enthusiasm for balloons as military weapons, but neither the Army nor the American public properly appreciated the potential of aeronautics (Scamehorn 9). This never stopped Lowe from pursuing his dream. He fought to make ends meet by taking odd jobs so he could finance his education in physics and other subjects that would eventually set him up for his success in aeronautics. Through his persistent work, at thirty years of age, Thaddeus Lowe had organized an aeronautics corps for the Union Army something that only a handful of people wanted to see happen at the time (Military Intelligence Corps Hall of Fame). • 13. Similarities Between The Truman Show And Animal Farm The Truman Show and Animal Farm Essay What makes a good life for individuals and what constitutes the perfect utopian society? These are important questions for all humans living in the modern world and the answers to these questions radically affect the way that we view how power should be used. In George Orwell s novel Animal Farm, we see that once the animals gain power over the farm they have the good life and live in a perfect society. In the Truman Show, directed by Peter Weir, we see that Truman doesn t know that Christof is controlling his life and he is always working towards living what he thinks is the good life. The good life is determined by having everything perfect. This then affects what the perfect society would look like because if everyone didn t have very much and wasn t treated equally the world would be a horrible place. People in power try to create perfect societies so people can live the good life. Power and control is the ability to direct or influence the behaviour of others or the course of events. In The Truman Show, Peter Weir demonstrates that power is corrupt and is a recipe for disaster. For example Christof stages a storm that supposedly kills Truman s father, making Truman afraid of water to stop him from leaving Seahaven Island. Mostly brilliant! Truman s been terrified of the water ever since. Likewise, in Animal Farm, George Orwell exemplifies that anyone can have power and when they have power they will use it to hurt others. For instance when Snowball suggests the windmill, Napoleon gets the dogs to chase Snowball away. In Snowball s absence, Napoleon declares himself the leader. Napoleon is always right. (Page 48) From then on the Pigs would run the farm. They took the ability to eat whatever and not have any rules away from the other animals. Both Weir and Orwell suggest that with power and control someone can overpower everyone else. The ability for an individual to live a good life is dependent upon the degree of freedom that they have to choose their own future. In The Truman Show, Peter Weir suggests that without freedom one cannot be truly happy. Despite having everything, Truman s life in Seahaven is never truly complete. When Truman sits on the beach in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 14. Imagination And Reality In Ode To A Nightingale Hi my name is Dheer Bhatia, today I will talk to you about how Keats explores both imagination and reality in the poem Ode to a Nightingale. This poem is about how Keats escapes reality and goes to an imaginative world with a nightingale where he hears her songs and lullabies before inevitably returning to the real world. It s an expression of love, hence the word ode, to the nightingale and her songs. The creative piece I have chosen is an illusion painting that is painted by Robert Gonsalves, and it illustrates the separation between imaginationand reality, and its difficulty in its distinction. Keats uses juxta positioning, imagery, structure and rhetorical questions to explore the two concepts of imagination and reality. Discrepancy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the art piece, there is a bed of water underneath the ships and the boat. The fluidity and movement of the waves are symbolic of the transition between imagination and reality. Keats desire to escape is shown through the rough brush strokes of the blue waves in the foreground. This suggests the transition to be difficult and problematic. The colour of the sea, blue, has connotations of serenity and peace suggesting the fate of Keats once the transition is complete. Keats longs to escape reality as he describes reality as where men sit and hear each other groan . This depicts reality to be tedious and dreary, which results in him loathing this concept. The word groan is an expression that conveys dread and despair, therefore Keats feels this way towards reality due to its monotonous and depressing characteristics. The action of groaning portrays an unappealing view of the world that Keats is longing to escape when conversing with the nightingale. Furthermore, the elongation of the word groan suggests the tedious and tiring effort to stay within the normal world and emphasises Keats desire to escape from and seek asylum in the nightingale s world. Keats expresses this through his actions when he goes Away! Away! , this makes the reader question the society and world they live in, as Keats sole desire is to escape the very world they stay in now. In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. Heroes Are Not Born Heroes Hero. According to Webster s New World Dictionary, a hero is defined as any person, male or female, admired for courage, nobility, etc (Webster s New World Dictionary, hero 1 ). Webster s Pocket Dictionary, comparably, defines a hero as a person of great courage, spirit, etc., especially one who has undergone great danger or difficulty (Webster s Pocket Dictionary, hero3 ). Heroes are not born heroes. Yes, everyone is born with the ability to become a hero, but in time, they may or may not become one. In our society, heroes are greatly acclaimed in the media. Whenever some person takes a bullet for a loved one or save a child from a burning building, there is a huge deal made about it, and they become known as heroes. But a person does not have to physically save someone s life to be a hero. A hero can also be someone who simply stands up for what he or she believes. Much like Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird, a hero can be someone who knows what is right and does the right thing, even if he is ridiculed for doing so. Also, whether or not a person is a hero depends on the perspective of the person. For instance, a little girl may think her father is the greatest man alive, but her first grade classmate does not think so instead, she thinks her father is a hero. The daughters of the man who is known for deterring United Airlines Flight 93 on September 11, 2001 definitely think him a hero, as does his wife and the public ( Wives of Passengers on Flight 93 ). ... Conditioning human behavior has been studied for many years, Psychologists Edward Thorndike and B.F. Skinner, have dedicated the majority of their lives to the study. Thorndike s theory Law of effect. Thorndike suggests that certain stimuli and response become connected or dissociated from each other. His experiment worked by placing a cat in a box, then observing its behavior as it tried to escape and obtain the food on the other side. He studied several cats and plotted the time it took for them to escape from the puzzle box. The challenge to get out of the box remained the same, but the amount of time to get out of the box decreased, and while the animal may have not realized what it was doing, but knew what he had to do to receive the food. He concluded that animals learn from reward and punishment or trial and error. The theory of B.F. Skinner is based upon the idea that learning is about change in behavior. Operant conditioningis learning by consequence. To put it simply, an action which he rewarded is likely to be repeated along with an action that is punished is less likely to be repeated. B.F. Skinner introduced a new term into the law of effect known as reinforcement. The Gorilla Beringei Beringei And Mountain Gorilla Introduction: The Gorilla beringei beringei or mountain gorilla, was first discovered on October 17th 1902, by a German officer named Captain Robert von Beringe (Berggorilla and Direkthilfe, 2002). Mountain gorillas play a large role in it s particular ecosystem through consumption the gorillas control and maintain vegetation that is vital for a healthy environment not only for the primatebut also other species that live in the environment as well. Since the discovery of the mountain gorillamuch fascination has been drawn toward the species. However, the gentle creature s population has had a sharp decline from Rwanda s belief in sumu, poaching, human disease, and unregulated tourism. In efforts to revive the species population from extinction, persistent activism through worldly foundations are helping protect the mountain gorillaspecies. Von Beringe discovered the primate on the summits of the Virunga Volcanoes (Berggorilla and Direkthilfe, 2000). The officer described the mountain gorilla as to be a large manlike ape, that was tall in stature (about 1 1/2 meters tall), and weighed over 200 pounds (Schaller, 2010). The mountain gorilla physical characteristics from other subspecies of primate differs by: lengthy hair, jaw, and teeth, as well as shorter arms (http://wwf congobasin.org/, 2010). Bowlby was born in London to an upper class family, and would rarely see, and interact with his mother. Bowlby believed that for a strong attachment to be formed there must be proximity maintenance (the desire to be near the people we are attached to), a safe haven(returning to the attachment figure for comfort and safety in the face of a fear or threat), a secure base(the attachment figure acts as a base of security from which the child can explore the surrounding environment),and separation distress (anxiety that occurs in the absence of the attachment figure). The main points of his attachment theory were that a child has an innate need to attach to one main attachment figure(monotropy). Another main point in his theory was that he believed a child should receive the continuous care of the single most important attachment figure for the first two years of life. Bowlby used the term maternal deprivation to refer to the failure to develop an attachment, and to refer to the separation or loss of a mother. To support his hypothesis that the relationship between the infant and mother in the first five years was crucial to socialization, and the disruption of this relationship can lead to emotional difficulties, antisocial behavior, and delinquency, he studied forty four juvenile delinquents in a child guidance clinic. Those common images have shaped the idea that ancient Egypt was obsessed with death. A mindset like that is understandable due to the high amount of gods the ancient Egyptians had dedicated to death and the afterlife#. However, the ancient Egyptians did not worship death. They merely required more odd sounding traditions to be followed due to their religion. For example, burying their personal belongings including food and pets, or more iconic, the preservation of bodies by mummification if possible. Perhaps explaining the method and various reasons for mummification and other topics surrounding it will show that the ancient Egyptians were not a civilization that worshiped death, and that they simply followed these in some ways strange religious traditions in an attempt to rest in peace. There is one type of mummification that most people may not know about. That type is animal mummification#. There are multiple reasons ancient Egyptians mummified animals. Some Egyptians wanted their pets to be buried with them, that meant mummification if they could afford it. The Utilitarian theory suggests that it is morally right to seek the greatest good for the greatest number of people. The morally right act is the act which results in the most happiness for the people of this world. Nature has placed mankind under the governance of two sovereign masters, pain and pleasure. It is for them alone to point out what we ought to do. As defined by the Merriam Webster Dictionary (n.d.), death is the permanent cessation of all vital organ systems, specifically the circulatory and respiratory systems. Throughout the dying process, nurses play a vital role in caring for both the patient as well as their family. In order to properly and effectively care for the dying patient and their family, the nurse must first examine their beliefs and feelings regarding death and the dying process. It is important to have a deep understanding that while all people may experience grief with the loss of a loved one, how that grief is expressed may be influenced by many different factors. This paper will define and explain the bereavement period, the nurse s role in disenfranchised grief, as well as the four tasks of mourning. Bereavement Period The bereavement period is the public or external display of mourning following the death of a loved one. Bereavement is a vital, yet often overlooked, area of care. Cooley (1992) proves that the earlier interventions are started, negative outcomes of grief are minimized. The bereavement period is often an unpredictable and complex style of care that requires continuous adjustment for the nurse (Johnson, 2015). It would be necessary to define key metrics to measure the success of social media, video, and mobile for 2011 and beyond, as part of her long term strategy for Sephora s online media spending. To measure its return on investment, Ms. Bornstein reviewed a Third Party Social Media Evaluation Framework (Ofek Wagonfield, 2012, Exhibit 14). Using this framework, Ms. Bornstein could measure the current investments Sephora was making in its social media and make three key arguments in her proposal. First, Sephora successfully generated a wide range of interactions with its social media (See Appendix, Exhibit 1). According to the third party, consumers could be sorted into three categories based on their levels of engagement: Advocates, Followers, and Searchers. Using a conversion rate, Sephora can see clearly that its social media participants turned into buyers. Ms. Bornstein must direct her attention to these metrics as they provide the most straight forward return on investment numbers for Sephora s social media outlet. Second, Ms. Bornstein already knows the value of its Facebook followers. Sephora entered the Facebook scene in 2008 by creating a Facebook Fan Page. By 2009, it had 300,000 followers and by September 2010, it had 812,000. Based on the analysis of an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Usefulness and Reliability of Information Provided By... An ongoing concern in financial reporting is the usefulness and reliability of information provided by corporations. The financial accounting standard board defines usefulness as the information that is useful for the users in decision making (FASB, 2011). Reliability is inferred when the information is verified, objective, and can be relied on. Therefore, Statement of Financial Accounting Standards No. 157 standardizes the valuationand disclosure of fair valuefor assets and liabilities in order to achieve both usefulness and reliability. The reasoning for the hierarchy was due to the inconsistency in previous definitions and guidance (FASB, 1992). Introduction to Fair Value Hierarchy To begin, SFAS defines fair value as the value... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... SFAS Relating to the Conceptual Framework The framework for measuring fair value is easy to understand and follow, and relates to the conceptual framework. As stated earlier the preferred measure of fair value is the market approach, because the prices are observable. For this reason the standard recognizes the need for relevant, reliable, and comparable information in order for users to make better decisions about the current financial position of a company. Financial readers are aware of the valuing measurement used to calculate the fair value, whether the measurement were derived from an observable or unobservable input. The measurement establishes the existence of reliable and relevance qualitative factors that make accounting information useful for decision making (Barbera, 2007). If it were observable then the value derived can be researched and verified. However, if it were unobservable then the user must read the disclosures which will be discussed later in the research paper, and determine the reliability of the internally generated measurement. In return it can be understood that the level 1 inputs are more reliable and relevant than the other two levels. In addition, the fair value hierarchy also enhances the comparability and consistency of information among companies due to following practices: all companies must ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Cuneiform Vs Hieroglyphics Cuneiform and hieroglyphics were both writing systems that emerged at the dawn of humanity, but their legacy and impact were vastly different. The two systems not only demonstrate the early concept of writing but show contrasting elements of civilization in globalism vs nationalism, internal vs external, connection vs isolation. The two systems certainly diverged from one another, but to understand this, the origins of the two writingsystems must be examined. Around the dawn of civilization, in the last half of the third millennium, abstract symbols (meaning letters, numbers, and other things that represent abstract thought) started to form from proto writing that had been present for millennia in the Nile valley before the first abstract... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But it is undeniable that hieroglyphics had more influence on history than cuneiform did, in spite of the fact that cuneiform was more advanced for its time. This is the first way that these systems contrast; sophistication. Cuneiform was a more advanced system than hieroglyphics simply because cuneiform was more abstract and it was far quicker to write Sumerian with it. Hieroglyphics was, for much of its existence, a logographic system, making it in some ways closer to drawing than to abstract writing such as cuneiform. However, in the Neolithic times, sophistication had an inverse relationship with influence, that is to say, that less advanced writing systems had more influence and clout with other cultures. This may have been because it is hard to teach an illiterate culture who may adopt a writing system, a complex, writing scheme, or a system that doesn t work in their language. Or, it may because the more advanced a writing system is, the fewer people in your culture understand how to use it. This can be seen with cuneiform and hieroglyphics in a very stark way. Not many cultures used cuneiform, and when they did it worked poorly with the language it was being used in, while hieroglyphs informed many other writing systems, such as Hebrew, Greek, and Phoenician; it cannot be understated the ... In question two you asked what are the characteristics of a hero in these stories and I feel like I didn t actually use the reading to support how I felt when answering the question. I think that adventurous, strong and brave are characteristics of a hero in these stories. In each story there is a fight for what an individual wants or needs and nothing stops them. Rapunzel wants her prince and the enchantress sends her to a dessert with her twins alone and while blind the prince finds his family and they live happily ever after. In Rumpelstilzchen the young girl said she would promise this little man her first born if she became queen and when the time came she had three day to think of his name and with many days help from messenger she got his name and was able to keep her first born. These two stories alone show the adventure, bravery and strength of never giving up and getting what they want no matter what. These are characteristics in each story just told differently. 2. By learning the secrets of heaven and earth, Victor brings a monster of his own creation to life and dooms himself and the human race (Shelley 23). The abhorred monster kills many of Victor s friends and family and has the opposite effect of a vaccine (Shelley 81). Creating Victor s fiend was superfluous, but the creation and use of vaccines are not, as they save many people from dying of preventable diseases each year. Due to the unlikely risk that comes with a vaccine, many parents have tried to excuse their child from getting them. There is nothing to decide about children getting vaccinated, as all children should receive mandated vaccinations... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As many are aware, the measles was a huge threat to children before people developed a successful vaccine for this disease. Before vaccines, an average of 500,000 annual cases of the measles got reported each year in the United States; since 2000, when vaccines became popular, there have been about 62 cases per year (Omer). As one can see, the amount of cases of the measles decreased since the measles vaccine. This data shows how vaccinating children decreases the chances of contracting a dangerous disease like the measles. Many people in countries like the United States take vaccines for granted and do not appreciate the benefits that come with their country wide, mandated use. Similarly, each year about three million children die each year from vaccine preventable diseases, therefore the vaccines that people would love to have access to could be going to children in need (Greenwood). In less developed countries, people are lucky to get vaccinated for common diseases, and jump at the opportunity to get a vaccine. Due to the many who die because vaccines are not available, people need to accept the vaccines are a luxury. In the movie Finding Forrester, both of the main characters, Forrester and Jamal, portray the idea of courage throughout the entire movie. Finding Forrester is a classic movie about a forgotten author, Forrester, and a teenager, Jamal, with a hidden dream. Jamal and Forrester create a special bond between the two of them through their love of writing. This bond between the two allows for each of them to gain courage. Since Forrester gained a new sense of courage from his friendship with Jamal, it enables him to go to professor Crawfords classroom and to stand up for Jamal. Jamal is accused of plagiarizing a paper that he wrote for Crawford s class, but the catch behind is that the beginning of the paper is actually Forrester s work. This accusation on Jamal creates a new conflict not only for Jamal, but also for Forrester. Jamals conflict is to either break his promise with Forrester or risk being accused of cheating. For Forrester, his obstacle is to either overcome his fear or let Jamal suffer from his mistake. Forrester builds up his courage and goes to read one of Jamal s writings to the class, and prove that he did not actually plagiarize. Since Forrester secluded himself from all of society because of his self guilt, it takes a tremendous amount of courage to go out into an unfamiliar place, especially to a classroom with a professor who attempted to tear him down by criticizing Forrester.Movielocity (2000) stated, It comes down to a moment of truth for both men; for Jamal, a choice between following his dream or betraying a friend, and for Forrester, a decision to remain closed off or to look at the world through new eyes (p.3). Here, movielocity is saying that because this conflict occurred, it gave both of the men another conflict within themselves. For Forrester, it was to either remain secluded or to see the world through new eyes and to help his friend. Since Forrester gained confidence from Jamal, it helped him to make the right decision with his inner conflict and go to Crawfords classroom and see the world through fresh eyes. This is due to an increasing recognition that a stronger CDSS is crucial to achieve a high quality of patients care and safety1,2. CDSS is a class of computerized information system that supports decision making activities2. It uses patient data to provide tailored patient assessments and evidence based treatment recommendations for healthcare providers to consider2,3 . Patient data can be input by digital entry, queried from other clinical information systems or transmitted from medical devices. Patient data are compared against a knowledge base and made sense of by an inference mechanism. The knowledge base can be procured commercially or developed in house. The inference mechanism can be highly variable in sophistication ranging from a simple yes no and if then statement to Bayesian prediction techniques and/or fuzzy logic. The output can also take a number of forms and can be delivered to a number of destinations at any time before, during or post interaction with the patient4.
