ESL 10 is an English course intended to help students succeed in academic courses at Claremont. Lessons are designed
to help you improve your understanding and production of spoken and written English; therefore English is to be spoken
at all times! The course will include a 30-60 minute language lesson each day. The remainder of the lesson will be spent
working on projects for this class and homework for other classes. DO NOT count on always being able to do your
homework in class; sometimes the English lessons will take the whole class.

Course Expectations: You are expected to come to class on time each day, to do all of the assigned work on time, and to
participate in all class activities. Tardiness and unexcused absences result in missed learning and therefore any missed
time will be made up outside of class. If you are absent from class, please bring a note from home.

Food, beverages (travel mugs and bottles are permitted), gum, iPods, and cell phones are not permitted in the class room.

English Department Late Work Policy: Homework is always due the next day. If it is not complete during a
homework check, students will not be able to hand it in later for credit. Students with excused absences will not be
penalized.

You will know in advance when assignments are due or tests are to be written. You are expected to complete
assignments and write tests on the assigned days. An “Incomplete” mark (I) will be assigned only when you have a
legitimate reason for missing a deadline or test. If you have a legitimate reason (illness, bereavement, personal/family
crisis), your teacher may choose to extend the assignment deadline or allow you to make up the test after school. Parents
will be asked to validate absences and other reasons for missing deadlines.

Assessment:
    - Attitude/behaviour/participation...30%
    - Weekly Journal...20%
    - Assignments and Course Work...40%
    - Tests and Quizzes...10%

Supplies:
   • 1 spiral, 250 page notebook (8.5x11) or small binder
   • 1 package of post-it notes (small)
   • Pencils, blue or black pen (for writing)
   • Coloured markers and/or pencil crayons, scissors, glue stick
   • Highlighters (different colours)

**IMPORTANT:
It is strongly suggested that students seek English instruction outside of the school day (a private tutor is HIGHLY
recommended).

The fastest way to improve your English is by joining in non-academic activities where you need to use English to
communicate. If you restrict your activities to those involving only your home language, your development will be
slow. There are many ways to get involved in the school; please see Mrs. Oberg to find an activity that suits you!

I am excited to work with you this semester. Please come and see me if you have any questions or are having
difficulty in the course (the sooner the better!)—I’m here to help!
