The literature studied in English 12 reflects a thematic continuity; that is to say there is a dominant focus of study:
the relationship between the individual and society. English 12 is a literature based approach to English with a
strong emphasis on analytical thought and writing. This is an academic course for keen, motivated students.
Your studies will focus on the development of writing skills, literary knowledge, vocabulary, and oral
expression. Much time will be devoted to analytical exploration of both the themes and writing styles in the
selections that are assigned. You can expect to read widely, write in a variety of formats, and become
actively involved in class and small group discussions. Be prepared to work hard. All assignments are
criterion-referenced so you will know exactly what is expected and when it is due.
READINGS:
  • Short Stories: Story and Structure
  • Poetry: Inside Poetry, The Claremont Review
  • Drama: Hamlet
  • Essays: The Act of Writing
  • Book Clubs (Novel Study): Choices may include: The Cure for Death by Lightening, The Stone Diaries,
Fall on Your Knees, The Sudden Weight of Snow, Oryx and Crake, A Thousand Splendid Suns, The
Shipping News, Deniro’s Game, The Cellist of Sarajevo, Ascension, The English Patient, Deafening,
The Poisonwood Bible, The Diviners, Pigs in Heaven, Jane Eyre, The Handmaid’s Tale, Nineteen-
Eighty-Four, Fat Woman, A Farewell to Arms, Wuthering Heights, Frankenstein, Vanity Fair , The
     Catcher in the Rye

EVALUATION: Students of English 12 must submit to a final exam designed by the Ministry of Education. This
exam is worth 40% of the student's final grade. The other 60% will reflect work done in class. Students can expect
to do some writing in every class.

Homework……25%
Essays/Major projects……30%
In-class writing……20%
Tests…20%
USSR……5%
In order to allow students to employ a variety of styles and forms of composition, one MAJOR assignment is
expected in each of the following categories: GRADE 12 QUALITY IS EXPECTED.
1.) Seminar. An oral presentation, to be cooperatively planned in groups of three, must be completed for our
novel study. Students who miss the presentation can replace this mark ONLY with two or more pages of
handwritten research on the topic. (A separate seminar guideline sheet will provide further explanation of
    this assignment.)
2.) Essay. You can expect to write three essays in this course, in preparation for January’s English 12 Provincial
Exam: one literary essay, one compare/contrast essay, and one personal narrative essay.

COURSE EXPECTATIONS: You are expected to come to class on time each day, to do all of the
assigned work on time, to participate in all class activities. Tardiness and unexcused absences result in
missed learning and therefore any missed time will be made up outside of class. If you are absent, you are
responsible for all missed learning, including notes, homework, assignments, and tests. Upon your return to
school, be prepared to show me a note signed by a parent or guardian.

*** Food, beverages (travel mugs and bottles are permitted), gum, iPods, and cell phones are not
permitted in the class room.
ENGLISH DEPARTMENT LATE WORK POLICY:
NO LATE WORK IS ACCEPTED IN ENGLISH 12. Arrange your personal and educational lives to
accommodate your deadlines. If you cannot meet a deadline, you must speak to me well before the due date.

You will know in advance when assignments are due or tests are to be written. You are expected to write
tests on the assigned days. An “Incomplete” mark (I) will be assigned only when you have a legitimate
reason for missing a deadline or test. If you have a legitimate reason (illness, bereavement, personal/family
crisis), your teacher may choose to extend the assignment deadline or allow you to make up the test after
school. You will be consulted on extensions. Parents will be asked to validate absences and other reasons
for missing deadlines. Students with special needs will be accommodated according to the information
included in the Individual Education Plan.

***IMPORTANT***
Please go through this course outline with your parents/guardians so that you are clear about the
expectations and policies in this course. Return the course outline (signed) no later than
___________________________________________.

I understand that in order to succeed in this course I must:

 Attend every class, on time and with appropriate materials
 Work productively in class
 Participate in class discussions (this will require doing the assigned readings)
 Contribute to a respectful, tolerant and clean classroom environment
 Hand in assignments on time, prepared with attention to neatness and quality
 Respect each other’s personal space, property and ideas
 Be responsible for missed work (the buddy system works well)
