Erikson's theory outlines eight psychosocial stages of development from infancy to late adulthood. Each stage presents a developmental "crisis" where successful completion leads to a healthy personality and unsuccessful resolution can result in negative consequences. The eight stages are: trust vs mistrust, autonomy vs shame/doubt, initiative vs guilt, industry vs inferiority, identity vs role confusion, intimacy vs isolation, generativity vs stagnation, and ego integrity vs despair.
