The EpiPen contains a single dose of epinephrine that is automatically injected into the thigh muscle when the pen is pressed against the skin. Epinephrine acts immediately to stop anaphylaxis, which is a severe allergic reaction that can involve swelling of the mouth, throat, or airways and cause difficulty breathing or a drop in blood pressure. If symptoms of anaphylaxis occur, the EpiPen should be used immediately by injecting it into the thigh muscle according to instructions and calling 911, as additional doses may be needed to counteract the reaction.
