Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley made a strong pitch for working on
irrigation projects to fuel economic growth of rural India and meet the
Centre's target to double income of farmers over the next few
years.Speaking during the inaugural session of fourth 'India Water Week',
Jaitley noted that irrigation projects, vis-a-vis infrastructure projects, bring
"immediate results" in terms of growth and promised that the the Centre
will help state governments in such efforts they "alone cannot fight the
challenges" posed by erratic weather conditions among others."And the
objective of the entire exercise is, even when you have adverse monsoon
conditions, the rain-fed areas don't starve, they still have and they do have
benefit of good agricultural crop. And that is going to be the essence."And

economy and therefore, one of our basic targets today is to make sure the

using to make sure resources are fed into the rural areas," Jaitley
said.Jaitley observed that the past two years were "most challenging" due
to "less than adequate" monsoon, which he noted, resulted in "very
marginal" growth of economy.The Minister stated that the trend had its
impact on services and manufacturing sector as it impacted the purchasing
power of India's 55 per cent population and underscored the need for
conserving water and creation of irrigation projects to tackle such
situation.While noting that irrigation is "strictly" a state subject, Jaitley said
the Centre will help states in completing such projects for ensuring
availability of water.During his speech, Jaitley also lauded BJP-ruled states
such Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh for their irrigation projects for dry areas
and agricultural growth attained thereby."Investment in irrigation almost
gets you immediate result.
Soyabean on NCDEX settled up on supply worries following slower
harvesting pace in United States and on improved demand from China
following robust imports data. Prices of the bean will be supported by
supply worries from United States, the world's biggest bean producer,
after US Department of Agriculture (USDA) said farmers planned to
seed 82.236 million acres of soybeans compared to 82.650 million a
year ago and an average analyst estimate of 83.057 million.According
to Argentinean Agri. Ministry Soybean crop there is estimated to be
around 60.9 million tons compared to 61.4 million tons last year. As
per Customs General Administration, China's soybean imports for
February month jumped 5.8% to 4.51 million tons on year. The United
States department of agriculture (USDA) trimmed 2015-16 United
States soybean production forecast for March and on improved demand
in global market.The USDA cut US, the world's biggest bean grower,
production estimates to 106.9 million tons in March compared to 107
million tons in the previous month and 106.9 million tons a year ago in
its World Agriculture Supply and Demand Estimates report.
Turmeric on NCDEX settled up on reports of a shortfall in
production in the key growing areas of Andhra Pradesh and
Maharashtra. Prices also seen supported due to due to anticipation of
fall in output by 15-20% due to adverse weather. The traders are keen
in buying the quality turmeric, which is held by farmers on expectation
on higher prices later in the season. Turmeric arrivals have been higher
in Feb and March compared to last year as per data.New season crop
has hit the markets and continue to peak in current month but majority
of arrivals are of medium quality. As per dept of commerce data,
turmeric exports until Dec 2015 pegged at 64,100 tonnes while the
export for the 2014-15 is 90,738 tonnes compared to 78,360 tonnes in
FY14. As on latest sowing data, turmeric sowing in AP, Telangana is
lower than the normal sowing. Turmeric arrivals during Jan-Mar are
reported to be higher compared to last year.

CHANA PRICES AT KEY SPOT MARKETNational Market Update
According to latest update, in order to keep prices in check and improve
domestic supply the centre has approved tenders for importing 7500 tonnes of
pulses specially Tur and Urad. The tenders will be issued through MMTC for
2500 tons of Tur and 5000 tonnes of Urad.
Odisha Traders Association has called off strike on VAT issue after getting
written assurance from state government. The traders were on strike on April 1
to protest against the 5 percent Value Addition Tax (VAT) levied by the Odisha
government on the purchase of pulses from other states. They have suspended
their strike till 26, May 2016.
Moong prices have shown some firmness due to demand from local millers.
At present, prices of Moong are around Rs 6900 per bag with arrival of 1500-
1600 bags per day in Merta City mandi of Rajasthan. Stockiest have stocked
Moong around Rs 8000 per quintal and still they are holding their stock in
expectation of higher prices in future.
In order to create buffer stock of pulses, HAFED will Procure Chana on
behalf of NAFED in Haryana. Haryana gram production estimate is around
1.05 Lakh tonnes and arrivals are expected from mid April. If prices decreases
or comes around MSP, government would buy Chana paying Rs 75 per quintal
over and above MSP.
The WPI has fallen from 370.1 in January 2016 to 356.4 in February 2016
for pulses. There has been a considerable fall in WPI of Lentil (347.1 for
January 2016 and 337.2 for February 2016) and Moong (413.6 for January
2016 and 397.4 for February 2016), whereas the fall in WPI of urad has been
marginal (507.8 for January 2016 and 507.1 for February 2016).
